We are very clear that we want to remain flexible with our employees, and that will continue,” said Salil Parekh, the CEO of Infosys said at the company’s Q2 earning press conference. Parekh, however, also said that employees are also willingly coming back to campuses. As many as 70% of its employees are on campuses at any given point of the week. Also, every week, the number of employees that are coming back to offices are going up. “There are instances where specific types of clients or engagements where everyone has to work together. For that, employees are back anyway,” Parekh said. On Wednesday, another Indian tech major, TCS, had said that it wants to bring back its employees back to offices in order to integrate its new hires with older employees. “There are things that cannot be taught and observed and better done in a collective manner while co-existing in a workplace,” said N <keyword id="1564843" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="ganapathy-subramaniam" source="Orion">Ganapathy Subramaniam</keyword>, COO of TCS. In 2021, it had come with a 25/25 policy where they wanted only 25% of their employees at offices. Hikes announced, no campus hiring this year Like TCS, Infosys’ employee count has also gone down sequentially. The IT major’s employee count went down by 7,500 to 3,28,764 as of September end. It intends to honour all the offers made by the company to new employees, and promises to onboard them as necessary. However, it’s probably going to give campus hiring a miss this year. “It’s not very likely that we are going to campuses to hire this year,” said <keyword id="2984280" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="nilanjan-roy" source="Orion">Nilanjan Roy</keyword>, chief financial officer of Infosys. The company said that, earlier, it hired ahead of demand which is now hazy. Infosys is also working to improve its utilisation levels, as a part of its margin improvement programme. The Bengaluru-based tech major said that it has already announced wage hikes, and will be rolling them out from November 1, onwards. It however did not disclose its variable pay payout details. “Our salary changes will follow regular patterns,” said Salil Parekh, CEO of Infosys. Its attrition is also down to 14.6% as compared to 17.3% in the quarter before.

Coimbatore – from a textile hub to tech hub

Using Comfy, a third-party app, <keyword id="6354512" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Infosys">Infosys</keyword> employees are now able to monitor and personalize their workspace temperature at the company’s Mysuru office. The app is compatible not only with smartphones, but also with laptops and desktops. 
 
The app, based on the building management system, provides instant streams of cool air while also recording the occupants' feedback so that it can make necessary changes in the temperature. 
 The last one year has seen <keyword id="3450295" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="infosys-mysuru-campus">Infosys Mysuru campus</keyword> implementing several measures for sustainability initiatives, including smart water meters, which are linked to the central command center for continuous monitoring. 
 
Not only this, the Bengaluru plant has also been given a biogas plant, which with its optimized design and detailed engineering, can treat two tonnes of food waste per day. 
 
To build energy efficiency, the IT giant has partnered with several institutions like Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, University of California, Berkeley; Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore; and Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Bombay.

Infosys employees can control AC temperatures using a mobile app

In what could be a first from a tech giant, <keyword id="6354512" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Infosys">Infosys</keyword> is geared to build the world's tallest <keyword id="3228912" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="freestanding-clock-tower">freestanding clock tower</keyword>. The tower would be built at its 345-acre global education centre located in Mysuru, a site that is proudly claimed to be the world's biggest corporate university. The height of the tower would be 135 metres, making it taller than <keyword id="64491" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Big-Ben">Big Ben</keyword> (96 m) in London, Hoover Tower (87 m) in California and McGraw Tower (53 m) in Cornell.

	The tower woukd be built in Gothic style so that it matches the classical look of the other buildings located in the campus. It will have 19 floors, a boardroom at the seventh level and will be erected from a 22x22 metre base.

	As per the company estimates, it would cost about Rs 60 crore and 20 months.

	Confirming the plans to ET, Murthy said the Mysuru training centre was "incomplete without a clock tower".

	"A clock tower brings a sense of academic breathing to the campus, and I felt we too will need one. And Vishal (Sikka) felt it is a good idea," he said.

	The design of the tower has been designed by Hafeez Contractor, who is a Mumbai-based architect responsible for the design of Infosys' Mysuru campus. The structural consultancy services are being provided by LERA, which is a New York-based firm of structural engineers, and the structure would be built by Bengaluru-based KEF Infra.

	"We are trying to marry tradition with modern technology at this tower. The tower will have a large digital screen on all the four sides. We will also use it to run text messages on important occasions," K P Nagaraj, Infosys' resident architect, told ET.

 This man has an interesting history. It wasn’t in haste. He was prepared for what lay ahead of him. “I made sure that I was busy when I left the company board. The same year, Pratiksha <keyword id="22629" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="trust">Trust</keyword> - the fund Kris set up with his wife - announced a grant of Rs 225 crore for a <keyword id="2038777" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Centre-for-Brain-Research">Centre for Brain Research</keyword>, so it could be set up inside the <keyword id="75850" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Indian-Institute-of-Science">Indian Institute of Science</keyword> campus in <keyword id="6354321" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Bengaluru">Bengaluru</keyword> without any delay. 
 He also initiated a <keyword id="63068" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="partnership">partnership</keyword> with the Centre for <keyword id="3720863" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="brain-research-and-carnegie-melon-university">Brain Research and Carnegie Melon University</keyword>. 
Going strong in what he aims to achieve, Kris says he wants to “create a world-class institution in India for Brain Research” by first facilitating research and then commercializing it “to create products that have the potential to create real difference”. 
 
He signs off by saying - “There are two ways achieve what I have set out for; either you can collaborate with the best minds in the world in this field or you can make sure that the Indian capabilities get the best international exposure which they can implement back home.”

The Indian government recently allowed the tech companies to work with 33% staff in offices. Given that, several IT majors like Infosys, SAP Labs, TCS and Wipro are stepping up their efforts to resume operations, sending a few employees to work from office locations. On May 7, Infosys re-opened its offices in Mangalore, Bengaluru, Mysore, Thiruvananthapuram, Pune, and Hyderabad with nearly 5% of the total workforce. That accounts for nearly 12,000 employees in India. With necessary precautions in place, the company plans to raise it to 40% in the coming weeks. “As lockdowns begin to ease across India, our CEO Salil Parekh, along with a few Infoscions, get back to our campuses that are equipped and prepared for the ‘new normal’,” Infosys said in a tweet. While TCS, which has 95% of the employees working from home globally, has less than 1% of its employees currently working out of offices. The company says it is in no hurry to work from offices. “We are resuming operations in a phased manner in select offices with minimal capacity after careful consideration and taking into account civic authority and state government orders. We have rolled out guidelines in our campuses which includes awareness sessions for employees and vendors, self-declaration forms, alteration of workspace layout and virtual collaboration tools for meetings. Other measures include temperature screening at all entry gates, use of hand sanitizers, periodic deep cleaning and disinfecting of office premises as also sanitising all Vehicles entering TCS premises,” TCS said in a statement. Capgemini, on the other hand, is planning to go operational with 10% staff. “We plan less than 10-15% of our employees to be in office currently depending on the criticality of the projects they are working on. We are working on a plan so that employees can come back to office in a phased manner. We will increase this number gradually depending on the guidelines to 25-30% over the next couple of weeks,” Pallavi Tyagi, CHRO at Capgemini India told Business Insider. At first, the company plans to send those employees to work from offices that are currently on ‘extremely critical projects’ or those who are unable to work from home due to client security guidelines. “We will slowly increase this number basis the guidelines and if there is a need for employees to be at the office. Else we will continue to permit work from home keeping in mind our employee’s health and safety. We have nearly 95% of our billable employees working from home and delivering to our clients,” Tyagi added. Meanwhile, companies like HCL Technologies and SAP Labs are introducing necessary precautionary measures to help their employees. There is a common perception that life could be better only in metro cities, but India’s tier-II cities are developing fast and offering opportunities for growth. One such example is Bhubaneswar, which is slowly becoming a hub for research and technology startups in the eastern region. 
 

	Let’s read about a person who moved from Kolkata to Bhubaneswar, looking for more opportunities to grow. Young geneticist <keyword id="2872592" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="Birendranath-Banerjee">Birendranath Banerjee</keyword> studies the effect of lifestyle stresses on one's genes at <keyword id="543180" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="KIIT-University">KIIT University</keyword> in Bhubaneswar. He was not happy teaching in his hometown Kolkata when KIIT offered him a job with a promise of complete intellectual freedom. KIIT was then in the initial stages of setting up a business incubator, and Banerjee in the early stages of setting up a company. It was a perfect match. The company, <keyword id="2872593" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="InDNA">InDNA</keyword>, was set up in 2012. In just three years, it is expanding to Kolkata, Hyderabad, <keyword id="6354321" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Bengaluru">Bengaluru</keyword> and other cities. Banerjee got Rs 1 crore from the department of biotechnology, and Rs 2 crore subsequently from rich doctors in the region. 
	 

	He is talking to large companies to provide testing services for their employees, and to figure out how much stress has influenced the functioning of their genes. "We are looking at the effect of lifestyle on the entire genome," says Banerjee.
 

	InDNA is the most high-tech among the KIIT incubator companies. In the past four years, KIIT has invested Rs 15 crore in its building and Rs 10 crore in equipment, for which the DBT provided Rs 9 crore. It has incubated 34 companies, nine of which have moved out to their own offices and are in business. Bhubaneswar has other startups too, as the large IT companies have come to the city. With several institutes of higher education, including an <keyword id="6354859" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="IIT">IIT</keyword>, the city is slowly setting the foundation for becoming a hub for research and technology startups in the eastern region. Says Mrutyanjay Suar, director of biotechnology at KIIT: "Bhubaneswar is at the same stage where Bengaluru was in the early 1990s." 
	 

	With its sketchy business history and laidback culture, Bhubaneswar at first seems an unlikely birthplace for 21st century startups. None of its educational institutions has set the country on fire through its research. The city is well laid out but retains its rural charm, being on the edge of a large forest and an elephant trail. 
	 

	And yet there are signs of the city developing as a major eastern hub, as people of eastern origin started preferring the city to Kolkata. Consider IIT Bhubaneswar, one of the youngest among the country's elite institutions. It will eventually have a 1,000-acre campus, but it currently operates from a partially-abandoned government building, an environment that does not bother some of its young and distinguished faculty. 
	 

	Let’s talk about another person who fulfilled his dream in the city. 
	 

	Saroj Nayak returned from Rensselaer Polytechnic in the US a year ago to be a professor at IIT, despite several attempts by this famous institution to keep him back. Power cuts greeted him when he sat in his makeshift office, a situation he had never faced in his life. 
	 

	His answer was to make solar back-up system, which he now sells through his startup Karma. This unit, replete with a solar panel, a battery, a fan, phone charger and a light, sells for around Rs 4,500. Nayak also had a fair bit of intelligence built into the system for energy management. "We are trying to reduce the environmental impact of energy generation with minimal investment,” he says. The city is now sprouting luxurious new buildings, some of them built by large IT companies. <keyword id="6354512" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Infosys">Infosys</keyword> was the first, as it built its first campus outside Bengaluru. TCS has one of its swankiest offices in the city. MindTree has built a learning centre in Bhubaneswar right next to TCS, and sends all its new recruits for intensive training there. Chip design firm <keyword id="25700" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Sankalp">Sankalp</keyword> too has a development centre here. Bhubaneswar has some native IT startups too. Software services firm <keyword id="2873029" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="ESSPL">ESSPL</keyword>, started in the city in 1998, has offices around the world. AABSys, a geospatial and design software services company founded in 1996, is now a medium-sized company. But the current generation of startups, particularly from KIIT, are venturing beyond IT and solving problems of people in the region.

As growth rates have fallen over the past decade, the number of jobs has shrunk and there are fewer options available for graduates. Gone are the days when they could pick between three-four different job offers," said the Wipro executive cited above.” 
 Applications are surging - trebling at <keyword id="6354512" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Infosys">Infosys</keyword> to 1.16 million in FY16 from FY13's 379,000. 
 
As per a report by Kotak Institutional Equities, 1.5 million engineering graduates pass out in India every year while the jobs are pegged at 200,000-250,000. 
 
"The number of engineers graduating currently is far too high. And absolutely, there is a demand-supply imbalance because of that. When you have a large number of youngsters coming into the job market, you need the economy to be growing at an extremely high rate to match that supply, which is not happening right now," Vivek Kulkarni, former IT secretary in the Karnataka government, told ET. 
 
Adding to the woes of engineering students will be <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=automation&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">automation</a>, which is going to hit the recruitment rate very hard. 
 As per HfS Research, India's IT services industry will lose 6.4 lakh low-skilled jobs to <keyword id="24019" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="automation">automation</keyword> by 2021. 
 According to latest All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) estimate, only 1 million <keyword id="955042" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="engineering-jobs">engineering jobs</keyword> are likely to be created over the next five years, implying that millions of graduates may find themselves unemployed. 
 
"We are currently seeing acceptance rates of well over 90%. Earlier, the range used to be around 80%. What we are seeing is increasing maturity amongst students when it comes to accepting job offers. Part of the reason is also due to the lower number of offers from the services industry," KS Sridhar, dean of placements at People's Education Society Institute of Technology in Bengaluru, told ET.

Number of fresh engineering graduates accepting job offers from TCS, Wipro has gone up

It has been tricky for <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=technology+companies">technology companies</a> in Chennai to do a balancing act - ensure the safety of their employees and clients' requirements - as heavy rains in the past few days left the city marooned. 
 

	In the past week, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Infosys">IBM</a>, <keyword id="28721" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Cognizant">Cognizant</keyword>, <keyword id="6354512" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Infosys">Infosys</keyword> and other <keyword id="512000" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="technology-companies">technology companies</keyword> with significant presence in Chennai have been forced to relocate key personnel and functions to neighbouring Bengaluru and other cities to avoid disruption to business — all part of routine contingency plans. Several others have employees staying in the office for uninterrupted service to their clients and the companies have ensured proper facilities for their stay. 

	More unusually, especially in an otherwise parched Chennai, companies had to set up makeshift camps in their offices with mattresses and temporary shower stalls and deploy boats for rescue and in-campus transportation. 
 

	About 15 per cent of India's 3 million-strong technology workforce is in Chennai, handling projects for clients such as Walmart, Citigroup, AstraZeneca and JPMorgan Chase. Chennai is also one of the country's largest automotive hubs, with Hyundai, Ford and Renault-Nissan based in and around the city. 
 

	Chennai is being pounded by rains for the past few weeks, which has severely damaged the city's infrastructure, including roads and electricity lines. The Tamil Nadu government has estimated losses at nearly Rs 8,481 crore. Several have died. 
 Technology companies invoke business continuity plans during natural calamities and disasters, which involves moving critical employees and business functions to safer locations so they can continue to support clients. India's top IT firms — Infosys, Tata Consultancy Services, <keyword id="10862" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Wipro">Wipro</keyword> and HCL Technologies — said they swiftly engaged their contingency measures as the weather in Chennai deteriorated. New York-headquartered <keyword id="10875" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="IBM">IBM</keyword>, which has at least 100,000 employees in India, one-fifth of them in Chennai according to analysts, moved key personnel from the city to Bengaluru, company employees aware of the developments said, requesting anonymity. 

	"Our clients remain a priority," an IBM spokeswoman said, "and we are continuing to provide 24x7 services to ensure business continuity and, where necessary, recovery solutions for impacted businesses."
 

	US-based Cognizant, which has a significant number of its 219,000 employees in Chennai, said it moved several employees to other centres within the city as well as to other cities and asked some to work from home to provide support to clients. 
 

	Also, "many of our employees working on critical projects volunteered to stay in offices to ensure uninterrupted 24x7 operations for our clients", a Cognizant spokesman said. The company stocked its offices with food and mattresses and built a small shower area for employees staying over. It accommodated employees' families as well after staff insisted they were worried about their folks at home. On Monday night (November 23), after traffic came to a standstill following another downpour, Cognizant arranged to accommodate a few employees at nearby hotels and lodgings inside campuses. "Employee safety and security is our top priority," the Cognizant spokesman said. 
 

	SIMILAR PROCEDURES IN INFOSYS
 

	Infosys followed similar business continuity procedures, moving several of its 25,000 employees to offices in Bengaluru and Hyderabad and asking others to work from home, according to the company's employees. "Infosys has taken several measures to ensure safety of employees and continuity of business at its centres in Chennai," a company spokesperson told ET. 
 

	The offices of India's fourthlargest software exporter, HCL Tech, on the IT corridor of Chennai along Old Mahabalipuram Road, were flooded last week, forcing the company to temporarily shut operations and seek the help of boatmen to rescue staff, according to company employees. HCL Tech flew some key employees to its offices in Noida and asked several others to log in from home. HCL and its subsidiaries employ 24,000 employees in Chennai. 
 

	TCS, the country's largest software exporter that has more than 65,000 employees in Chennai, managed operations and client interactions without having to move people but gave employees the option to work from home or from offices near them, a company spokeswoman said. 
 

	India's third-largest IT firm, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=wipro">Wipro</a>, gave its 18,000 employees in Chennai the option of working from home for most of last week.
 

	"We had moved out our employees to safer locations only after assessing the on-ground situation," a company spokeswoman said.
 

	"Electrical systems were strategically monitored to avoid any untoward incidents. Adequate fuel and food items were stocked... (And) Boats and large vehicles were arranged to allow in-campus commute."

Last week, a gentleman named Balwant Singh from Guwahati blamed Ola Electric’s faulty technology for son’s serious road accident. Singh noted that his son met with an accident due to fault in regenerative braking, which increased the spread of the scooter instead of slowing it down on a speed breaker. Ola alleged that the accident was a result of overspeeding and<a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/business/auto/news/ola-s1-pro-guwahati-accident-ola-alleges-the-victim-was-overspeeding-and-braked-in-panic-leading-to-the-accident/articleshow/91001402.cms"> backed their claims</a> with the user’s telemetry data on social media. Whatever the situation may be here, there have been several other customers who have raised red flags over Ola Electric scooter’s technology. While the move does seem premature, some believe that the move is rather timely. “Ola Electric’s move towards entering the autonomous driving vehicle segment through their electric car is a major step and will help India make its mark on the EV roadmap globally, provided Ola is able to achieve their global ambitions. Given Tesla took approximately 8 years to perfect the design of its electric car, I feel Bhavish Aggarwal’s move towards getting kick-started on Ola’s electric car is rather timely and will play a major role in “Built in India. I think it is important to understand incidents like these happen with all manufacturers, all fuel types. EV, petrol, diesel and CNG sab mein hota hai [happens with everyone],” he added. He also emphasised that an OEM declaring a call-back is a sign of maturity and acceptance of an issue that they would want to fix.
