Here’s why Info Edge stocks rallied over 5% despite 60% fall in quarterly profit

<ul><li>InfoEdge’s net revenue grew to ₹316.6 crore from ₹265 crore in the same quarter previous year. </li><li>The revenue push came in from its <keyword id="6354553" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="real-estate">real estate</keyword> aggregator platform <keyword id="1336736" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="99acres">99acres</keyword>.com.</li></ul>One of India’s first internet companies InfoEdge reported a 19.5% jump in net revenues in the second quarter to ₹316.6 crore from ₹265 crore in the same quarter previous year, thanks to its real estate aggregator platform 99acres.com. “We continue to witness strong quarterly operational performance in terms of billing, revenue, total income and operating EBITDA growth, which are in high teens on year-on-year basis, supported by 99acres which grew over 20% in terms of billing and revenue during the quarter on a year-on-year basis,” said Chintan Thakkar, chief financial officer of InfoEdge. Thakkar spoke to Business Insider to share how the revenues on 99acres, in spite of an economic slowdown. “99acres has been consistently growing in the last six quarters. The last quarter we grew by 19%,” he said. The real estate aggregator business is divided into two parts – the first being the developers and businesses about new projects and the second one being resale retail. The second aspect has been the one to turn the story around for 99acres. “The growth could be because of the velocity of transactions – if there are more and more transactions in the market the business goes up. There are more green shoots around resale rental business and that is helping brokers with a good return on investment, which in turn helps our business,” said Thakkar. The company’s net profits also fell by 88% due to an exceptional item – impairment in a company called Meritnations due to gap in valuation. However, Thakkar informs us that there actually has been a 31.4% jump in profit margin. In a regulatory filing, Info Edge shared that Naukri’s business was growing at a steady 13% until the lockdown happened. But ever since then, things have gone downhill. Naukri’s India business saw a year-on-year decline of collection by ₹14 crore in the fourth quarter of FY20 and it worsened in April with a decline of ₹26 crore as compared to the same month the previous year. “For Q4’20, pre-covid19 the growth was 13%, the lockdown slowed down the growth to zero, leading to a shortfall of collection of ₹40-44 crore (had the business grown at pre-covid growth rate),” said the company’s filing. But Info Edge’s hit didn’t just come from its jobs section but also the real estate platform – 99acres. The real estate portal saw a year-on-year decline of collection by ₹18 Cr in Q4FY20 and ₹9 crore in April. The lockdown created a shortfall of ₹25-30 crore said the company. While Naukri.com has always been the blockbuster property for Info Edge, the company had also been betting on real estate growth. “Most of the properties listed today are residential real estate. Today, we don’t do too much of rental, we don’t do anything in commercial – but these are very large opportunities. Inside the categories we are in, the opportunities are huge. Real estate is 10% of the GDP of any country, that’s how big real estate is,” Info Edge CEO Hitesh Oberoi had told Business Insider in February. Info Edge’s revenue stood at ₹320.5 crore for Q3FY20, up by 14% from the same quarter in the previous year. However, its matrimony listings portal Jeevan Sathi’s collections saw marginal growth – by ₹4 crore in Q4FY20 and ₹1 crore in April. Info Edge share price falls after company reveals dismal performance of Naukri.com and 99acres due to Covid19

<keyword id="80004" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Info-Edge">Info Edge</keyword>, the parent company of job portal <keyword id="218117" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Naukri-com">Naukri.com</keyword>, will be investing nearly Rs 1.85 billion in food guide portal <keyword id="830092" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Zomato">Zomato</keyword> Media Private Limited. 
 
“Info Edge has committed to make an additional investment of an amount of about Rs.1.85 billion in the shares of Zomato Media Private Limited (which owns and operates an online food guide portal www.zomato.com),” Chintan Thakur, chief financial officer and whole time director of Info Edge informed National Stock Exchange on November 19, 2014. 
 
Zomato will be raising an overall funding of about Rs.3.70 billion which also includes stake sell from existing shareholders. Info Edge will be investing along with two other investors. 
 
“Info Edge would be subscribing and purchasing equity shares and convertible preference shares of Zomato Media Private Limited. Upon disbursement of this amount, the total amount invested by Info Edge in Zomato Media Private Limited will be about Rs. 3.27 billion and the shareholding of Info Edge in Zomato Media Private Limited, post aforesaid aggregate fund raise of Rs.3.70 billion, will be maintained at 50.1% on a fully converted and diluted basis,” added Thakur. 
 
Early last year, the company had invested less than Rs1 billion and had become a majority shareholder with nearly 58% shares in the company.

Rs 1.85 billion in Food Guide Zomato

In yet another sensational story of another Indian founder taking his startup for a joyride, Broker Network (operated by 4B <keyword id="50752" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="networks" source="Orion">Networks</keyword>) founder <keyword id="536283" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="rahul-yadav" source="Orion">Rahul Yadav</keyword> reportedly maintained a luxurious lifestyle such as owning a Mercedes-Maybach and hired a boardroom at the Taj Land's End for Rs 80,000 per day, as employees were left unpaid for months. According to a report in leading startup news portal Inc42, Broker Network burnt over Rs 280 crore in less than 18 months, while over 150 employees have not been paid since November last year. "Yadav turned to his long-time employees to borrow personal loans to pay employee salaries. One such top-level employee lent close to Rs 50 lakh to Yadav. He has filed a criminal complaint against Yadav," the report noted, citing sources. Other employees were also asked to take "advance salary" loans and transfer the amount to Yadav. Employees alleged that all through this, Yadav maintained a luxurious lifestyle. "Yadav told us luxuries such as his Maybach came from his earnings at Anarock," and he was "also looking to buy a Bentley," one employee was quoted as saying. Yadav, who foundedAHousing.com has denied all allegations related to any wrongdoing at the company, according to the report. Allcheckdeals India Private Limited (AIPL), a wholly-owned subsidiary of <keyword id="80004" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="info-edge" source="Orion">Info Edge</keyword>, invested Rs 276 crore in Yadav's 4B Networks and provided debt financing of Rs 12 crore. Now, Info Edge has initiated a forensic audit into the prop-tech startup in which it holds a stake, as Yadav "repeatedly failed to provide the information". Founded in 2020 by Yadav, 4B Networks last raised Rs 90 crore in September 2022 at a valuation of $185 million. AIPL sought information, including details and particulars of financial transactions, transactions with related parties and such other aspects, from 4B Networks and its current management. "However, 4B Networks has repeatedly failed to provide AIPL with such information and has also not responded to the information requests by the company on several occasions," according to an exchange filing by <keyword id="3378431" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="indo-edge" source="Orion">Indo Edge</keyword>. "AIPL has exercised its contractual rights under the shareholders' agreement and articles of association of 4B Networks and pursuant to the same, is initiating a forensic audit into the affairs of the investee company," the filing further read. Online food portal <keyword id="830092" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Zomato">Zomato</keyword>, which recently received an investment from <keyword id="80004" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Info-Edge">Info Edge</keyword> last year, has acquired US based food portal Urban Spoon for $52 million. Info Edge made the disclosure to the National Stock Exchange (<keyword id="6354646" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="NSE">NSE</keyword>) in a letter dated January 12, 2015. 
	 
	Apart from the US, Urban Spoon has operations in Canada, UK, Ireland, Australia, Canada and New Zealand. “The transaction is an all cash transaction amounting to $52 million,” the company said in a letter. 
	 
	It should be noted that Info Edge has invested nearly Rs 1.85 billion in food guide portal Zomato Media Private Limited. “…Upon completion of the allotment/transfer of shares against the said investment aggregate amount of investment in Zomato will be about Rs 3.27 billion. Info Edge will hold 55.13% of the equity share capital of Zomato. The overall holding on a fully converted and diluted basis will remain at 50.1%,” said the company in the letter.

We continue to look for good opportunities outside to invest for our internal businesses to grow,” Hitesh Oberoi, Co-Promoter, MD and CEO, InfoEdge had told Business Insider. InfoEdge will be acquiring 100% of Highorbit Careers Pvt. Ltd in a deal worth ₹808.1 million. Naukri has more than 475,000 jobs on its platform, along with more than 60 million registered jobseekers. With products such as Resume Database Access, Job Postings and Response Management Tool for over 76,000 corporate clients, the portal has a traffic share of over 70%. iimjobs, which was founded in 2010, has 23,000 job postings with 1.8 million job seekers every month. In 2016, iimjobs had raised funding worth $2 million from India Quotient, an early stage investment firm. According to <a href="https://inc42.com/features/the-128-startups-that-raised-funding-from-the-dipps-fund-of-funds/">reports,</a> iimjobs had also raised funding from Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade. “iimjobs has managed to carve a niche for itself and has built a great brand in the premium jobseeker community. Its value proposition strongly complements Naukri’s proposition to its customers,” said Oberoi. InfoEdge, which runs Naukri.com, jeevansathi.com, 99acres.com and shiksha.com, was one of India’s early startups to head for an IPO.
