Their parents' <a href="https://www.elle.com/culture/movies-tv/a27378298/indya-moore-transgender-pose-interview/">inability to accept their queerness</a> at the time landed Moore in foster care, <a href="https://www.insider.com/happiest-season-features-a-character-coming-out-in-her-30s-2020-12">a reality for many trans and queer youth.</a>Moore told Insider that, despite the hardships, it was the supportive people along the way that were crucial for them to become the person they are today. One of the people they thank is their sister, who was the first person to recognize their queerness when they were around six years old."She told me that no matter what, no matter if I come to be gay or straight or whatever, that I will always have love in her. My sister was creating a foundation of understanding for me that I will have love no matter what I feel challenged by in this world," Moore told Insider. "That messaging was very important." Studies have shown <a href="https://www.npr.org/sections/health-shots/2016/04/11/473292576/parent-support-may-help-transgender-childrens-mental-health">trans youth thrive</a> when they have the support of their families, making acceptance and love essential to their journeys and development. According to a 2016 <a href="https://pediatrics.aappublications.org/content/137/3/e20153223">study published in the medical journal Pediatrics</a>, trans youth are less likely to experience depression, anxiety, and suicidal ideations when they have the support of their parents. In an interview with Insider, Moore shared their top tips for adults looking to support trans youth as part of "The Journey" campaign - which asks other <keyword id="729067" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="LGBTQ">LGBTQ</keyword> people to thank someone in their life who has helped them in their journey to self-discovery. Orbitz will match every "thank you" it receives from other LGBTQ people by donating $20 to the <a href="https://www.iglta.org/">International LGBTQ+ Travel Association</a> up to $50,000. <h2>Don't just offer advice </h2>While giving advice might be the first instinct many adults have when trying to support trans young people, Moore encourages adults to go deeper. "A lot of times those weren't the things that made me feel held and supported and loved or cared for or seen as a three-dimensional human," Moore said. "The things that make me feel like a three-dimensional person, a multi-dimensional person was being trusted." Moore said the adults that were vulnerable with them when they were young were ultimately the ones who taught them they could share their emotions and be vulnerable. "When you trust us, you affirm that we are capable of love. When you are vulnerable with us, you teach us how to be vulnerable," Moore said. "I feel like these are the building blocks of what creates a grounded adult out of trans kids."<h2>Be supportive without focusing on gender and sexuality</h2>There is increasing acceptance for trans youth in society, though that progress is slow. But, among parents who do support their trans child's truth, it's possible to be supportive in the wrong ways.According to Moore, supportive adults can often focus too much on a child's transness.It's more important to remember, this is a child like any other.Moore wants adults to show trans youth they are complex, multi-dimensional beings that go far beyond their gender. "Don't make supporting them about their sexuality, who they like, or what they don't like or what their gender feels like, because none of these are who we are," Moore said. <h2>Nurture their curiosity for everything, and help them imagine any future they want</h2>All children need their curiosity and creativity nurtured.For trans children, there are often more barriers to doing that, whether it's because they live in an unsupportive household, or simply don't see themselves represented in media. It can be difficult to imagine a future, Moore said.Introducing them to any possible life path early, and letting their imagination roam, is so important. "I want to encourage adults to make those pathways for curiosity," Moore said. "Introduce us to different experiences in this world, with art, with sports. Let us have access to these things so we can figure out and realize some of the possibilities that are there already for our futures."Adults exposing children to travel, educational opportunities, clothing, makeup, and other ways to express themselves can help trans kids discover themselves holistically.<h2>Tell them you will love them no matter who they are </h2>Moore's sister was the first person to offer unconditional love along their journey through their queerness, but she was not the last.They told Insider when they entered foster care due to their parent's inability to accept them when they came out at 14 years old, they found a few mentors along the way. "I think the love and the care feels so pulled back in foster care, even more so than in school sometimes. Finding love and support in foster care was very difficult," Moore said. "But I did meet these two incredible people. One was a therapist of mine. Her name is Lily and another was a social worker. Her name is Angie.""I'm so grateful that I was able to receive love because that was also transformative for me growing up," Moore said. Ramirez's complex portrayal was applauded again by fans of the show after the actor came out as nonbinary Friday. It means identifying as a gender other than male and female, and sometimes identifying as neither or a mixture of both genders at the same time, according to the <a href="https://transequality.org/issues/resources/understanding-non-binary-people-how-to-be-respectful-and-supportive">National Center for Transgender Equality.</a>People who are nonbinary may go by the pronouns "they/them" rather than "he/she." The nonbinary identity is increasingly visible, with a January 2019 <a href="https://www.pewsocialtrends.org/2019/01/17/generation-z-looks-a-lot-like-millennials-on-key-social-and-political-issues/psdt_1-17-19_generations-02/">Pew Research survey</a> finding that a third of teens and people in their early 20s know someone who uses such gender-neutral pronouns.Janelle Monae came out as nonbinary in January and other <keyword id="6412373" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="celebrities">celebrities</keyword>, including Indya Moore and Sam Smith, are nonbinary. 'Grey's Anatomy' actor Sara Ramirez came out as nonbinary: 'In me is the capacity to be Girlish boy, Boyish girl'

<ul class="summary-list"><li>If your child is questioning their <keyword id="6358360" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="gender">gender</keyword> and you haven't had the same experience, it can be difficult to know how to help.</li><li>Online research and support group can help, but you should also ask your child what they need to feel supported since everyone is different, therapists told Insider.</li><li>Don't crack jokes or set limits on how your child outwardly expresses themself. Don't assume what your child needs or how they feel.</li></ul>If your child is questioning their <a href="https://www.insider.com/explained-difference-between-gender-gender-expression-and-sexuality-2020-11">gender</a>, you might feel confused or worried, especially if you haven't had the same experience.But offering a judgment-free environment to your child as they discover who they are will help them feel supported and more confident, according to Kristie Overstreet, a psychotherapist and creator of <a href="https://www.dignitymodel.com/">The Dignity Model</a>."I think for parents, a lot of times they feel like they've got to have the answer," Overstreet told Insider.But when it comes to a child questioning their gender, it's best to put the problem solving aside and focus on listening."I want parents to know you don't have to figure it out. You just got to listen and see what they need. And if they say they don't know what they need, then you can say, 'All right, let's talk about it more. What's coming up for you? What does it mean to you?'" said Overstreet.<h2>Don't make assumptions</h2>It might be your instinct to make assumptions when your son wants to wear dresses or your daughter prefers to forgo them altogether.But putting your child in a category will impede any productive and helpful conversations, according to Overstreet.That's because <a href="https://www.insider.com/explained-difference-between-gender-gender-expression-and-sexuality-2020-11">gender expression and gender identity are different</a>, and a person's outward appearance might not "match" the gender with which they identify.A person questioning their gender might decide to change how they dress so their appearance is more aligned with societal expectations of gender, but that <a href="https://www.insider.com/explained-difference-between-gender-gender-expression-and-sexuality-2020-11">isn't always the case</a>."It doesn't mean that this kid is transgender or non-binary because they're questioning. It's an exploration for them to kind of figure out their sense of self as it relates to their own gender," Overstreet said.<h2>Trust your child, and ask them what they need to feel supported</h2>If you're unsure how to help, simply ask your child what they need from you to feel supported and safe.Maybe they want help finding a therapist that affirms their gender, or they need some encouraging words, or some help navigating online resources.Ask <a href="https://www.chop.edu/news/health-tip/talking-to-kids-about-gender-and-sexual-orientation">open-ended questions</a> like, "Which pronouns should I use when I refer to you?" or "How can I help you explore this side of yourself?" to keep the conversation non-judgmental, Overstreet said. Above all, trust your child's feelings and instincts as they continue to explore their gender, sex therapist and psychotherapist Veronica Chin Hing told Insider."We trust a child when they say what foods they like or don't like, and we trust them when they say they're attracted to a person in their kindergarten class or wherever. Parents employ a lot of trust, and it falls short when it comes to gender variance and sexuality and sex," but that shouldn't be the case, Chin Hing said.<h2>Conduct your own research</h2>Take time to reflect on your own biases on gender norms to make the process easier for you and your child, Chin Hing said."If you think it's gender related, I would encourage you to take a minute and sit down and sort of flush that out. Why is it gender related? Why has that been the conclusion that you're drawing?" Chin Hing told Insider.Overstreet recommended <a href="https://www.glaad.org/">GLAAD</a>, a queer anti-discrimination advocacy organization, which has FAQs and other resources on its website. For a more visual learning experience for both parents and children, Chin Hing suggested the <a href="https://transstudent.org/gender/">"Gender Unicorn."</a>It's a model created by the national organization Trans Student Educational Resources to show the many ways a person can view their gender.It helps to communicate that we don't all fit into two genders. It also illustrates that a person's gender, sex, gender expression, and attractions don't have to match up to be valid.<h2>Join a support group</h2>It's important to get help yourself, Overstreet said."If parents don't take care of themselves, don't find someone to talk to, don't have the resources to figure out how they feel about it and not be judged for how they feel about, it's going to make it harder for them to support [their children]," she said, adding that Facebook and <a href="https://pflag.org/">PFLAG</a> are two places to find other parents in similar situations.<h2>Avoid using humor</h2>In uncomfortable situations, you might try to lighten the mood with a joke. But when it comes to conversations about your child's gender, leave humor at the door."I have not heard it received well in any case I've worked with, or with any client I've worked with," Chin Hing said.Joking can make an important and serious conversation about gender feel trivial when it's not.<h2>Speak in an honest, straightforward manner</h2>Do your best to listen to your child's experience and ask questions without judgment.Chin Hing encourages parents to view the experience as a team effort with their child."Off the bat I would encourage you to look for very transparent, very honest intentional words to convey what you need and how you feel, and collaborate on this conversation around gender identity," she said.<h2>Don't limit your child's self-expression</h2>It's natural as a parent to want to shield your child from negative experiences, bullying, and abuse.But limiting how your child expresses themself can do more harm than good, according to Overstreet."It's important that parents give the right to a kid to be able to express themselves without judgment," she said.<a href="https://www.insider.com/indya-moore-tips-for-parents-to-support-trans-kids-pose-2020-12">"Pose" actor Indya Moore</a> previously told Insider's Canela Lopez they felt most supported in their childhood gender exploration when adults in their life trusted them to make decisions for themselves."When you trust us, you affirm that we are capable of love. <ul class="summary-list"><li>The 2020 Emmy nominations were a historic milestone for Black actors who scored 35 of the 102 nomination spots, setting a new record. </li><li>FX's "<keyword id="3724" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="pose">Pose</keyword>," a story about Black and brown gay and transgender New Yorkers, scored a total of five nominations, including outstanding lead actor in a drama series and outstanding period and/or character makeup (nonprosthetic). </li><li>For the second year in a row, "Pose" lead Billy Porter was recognized in an individual acting category, while all four of his Black trans and nonbinary costars were snubbed. </li><li>Through the 2020 Emmys nominations, Hollywood illustrated how differently — and unequally — it still views the work of trans and cis actors. </li></ul>In the final moments of the season one finale of "Pose," House of Evangelista's mother, Blanca (MJ Rodriguez), is hoisted into the air after being named "Mother of the Year." Under the glittering lights of a disco ball and soft cascade of petals, her glossy, pink-lipped smile is infectious. After facing compounding and violent discrimination and inequality, at times from her fellow trans and gay community members, Blanca built a haven for herself and other Black and brown <keyword id="729067" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="LGBTQ">LGBTQ</keyword> people.Mother Evangelista proved that she and her community could do more than merely survive in a society that rarely cared if they did or not. The scene unfolds like a whimsical, fairytale. But for the Black trans and queer viewers of "Pose," a Black HIV-positive trans woman in the '80s being celebrated on-screen was also gutwrenchingly revolutionary.And it happens to be one among many moments of awing dramatic brilliance from the likes of Rodriguez and her Black trans costars Angelica Ross, Indya Moore, and Dominique Jackson throughout seasons one and two.Before debuting in 2018, <keyword id="6355065" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="TV">TV</keyword> had never really shown Black and brown trans Americans how "Pose" had; centered in and leading their own story where their identities are respected, and their characterizations carefully crafted to illustrate their vulnerability, grace, and depth. Never had the crushing conditions of racism, colorism, transphobia, and classism been illustrated quite so equally alongside the joy and resilience of Black LGBTQ identity, history, and culture.So when Television Academy CEO Frank Scherma acknowledged 2020 as "a year, unlike any other in recent memory" during the <a href="https://www.insider.com/2020-emmy-nominees-winners-list-2020-7">Emmy nominations</a> ceremony, it felt like it was finally time for the trans talent of "Pose." Amid a global health crisis and a historical fight for social justice, Scherma swore that "It is our duty to use this medium [for] change," and "the responsibility of television to… amplify the voices that must be heard and tell the stories that must be told." Shortly after, a record number of Black actors were nominated for the most prestigious TV awards of the year.Among them was talent from "Pose," which chronicles the lives of Black and brown gay and trans New Yorkers, the ball scene, and the AIDS epidemic over several decades. Frustratingly, it didn't include Rodriguez or her Black and brown costars Jackson, Moore, Ross, and Hailie Sahar. <div type="image" title="Pose Emmy snubs 4" height="1997" width="3000" msid="78209972" hostid="261"></div><h2>The <a href="https://www.emmys.com/shows/pose">FX show received five nominations</a>, with the series' only individual acting honor going to star Billy Porter for lead actor in a drama series</h2>It's a category he made history in last year as its <a href="https://www.insider.com/billy-porter-makes-emmys-history-and-the-category-is-love-2019-9">first openly gay winner</a>. Yet, for all the full-bodied dramatic prowess the Tony and Grammy honoree brings to the story of Pray Tell, his gay cis male character is one sliver of the predominantly Black "Pose" ensemble.It's a large cast that hasn't just bucked industry precedent by featuring a single trans actor in a one-off or even recurring role. It's earned its groundbreaking label because of the five Black and brown trans actresses and nonbinary actors occupying leading and supporting roles. Some may argue that their lack of recognition stems from commendable but ultimately not award-worthy performances. Yet the worth of their work and an acknowledgment of its caliber is built into the show's present and past nominations.Porter may have been the only single on-screen talent nominated by the Emmys, but the show itself received a best drama nomination in 2019. Other mainstream awarding bodies, such as the Golden Globes, AFI Awards, Critics Choice Awards, Peabody Awards, and more have bestowed similar series honors on the FX show.Like the award-nominated and winning work that has come before it, the cable program does not stand independently from its actors' efforts. And by ignoring their individual accomplishments, Hollywood reinforces that it's only interested in celebrating the fruits of trans and nonbinary labor, not the people who bear it. Their leading and supporting performances as Blanca, Elektra, Angel, Candy, and Lulu mark the largest number of transgender actors on a scripted show in series regular roles in the history of television. In short, the show's trans and nonbinary talent don't just appear on the show. They are the show.<h2>The cast members are honor-worthy, not because they are trans people playing trans women, but because they are <keyword id="9967574" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="trans-actors">trans actors</keyword> who have dedicated themselves to delivering humanized and nuanced depictions</h2>From these cast members comes an intimate knowledge of and participation in the trans community and ball scene on which the show is based. They also come with acting credits on award-winning film, TV, and web series productions like "Queen &amp; Slim," "American Gods," "Transparent," "Mr. Robot," "Nurse Jackie," "Luke Cage," and "Her Story." They deliver performances not just from a place of inherent cultural understanding, but of skill and intentionality.Any shared experience with their characters doesn't explain their talent. It elevates it, allowing them to showcase the diversity, complexity, and relatability many Black and brown cis, trans and queer people are rarely afforded on screen. <div type="image" title="Pose Emmy snubs 2" height="2000" width="3000" msid="78209976" hostid="261"></div>But the issues with the series' Emmy snubs don't end there. The show was also nominated for outstanding period costumes, outstanding period and/or character hairstyling, and outstanding prosthetic makeup for a limited series, movie or special. Every member of the "Pose" production team does incredible work breathing life into the show's visual storytelling.But to celebrate its creative production elements, and not the actresses and nonbinary actors who pull that into a compelling performance, feels like more than "a snub." <h2>Coupled with Porter being the only actor nominated, and Hollywood's history of awarding cis actors who play trans characters, the lack of nominations reinforces a dangerous and dehumanizing cultural perception</h2>That is that trans people and their creative and cultural labor is only palatable as performance. It is not yet accepted and respected, though it should be, as a legitimate lived experience from which "Pose" has dramatically drawn. In such a historic year for Black artists at the Emmys, we must acknowledge Hollywood has long shirked any shows and actors centering Black people and their experiences. Yet, that meager number is still a mountain next to the molehill of Black trans talent and narratives.It was only in 2017 that Laverne Cox made history with her outstanding guest actress in a drama series nomination for her role on "Orange Is the New Black." In addition to being honored in the same category again, 2020 marked the second time a trans performer has ever been nominated for a Primetime Emmy in an acting category. That historical honor went to Rain Valdez, creator and star of the web series "Razor Tongue," who was nominated for outstanding actress in a short-form comedy or drama series.These are absolutely the kinds of milestones that make shows like "Pose" possible. But to acknowledge the work of those trans actresses does not shield the Emmys and other awarding bodies from their failure to recognize the performances of other trans women.Despite a historically tokenistic award culture, there is no cap or quota on the number of nominations that can be handed to trans actors. <div type="image" title="Pose Emmy snubs 5" height="840" width="1239" msid="78209979" hostid="261"></div>The trans and nonbinary talent of "Pose" powerfully brings to life some of the most vulnerable people in a community that, as our current moment illustrates, is dangerously under attack.So in a year where the Emmys — and America — finally seem ready to acknowledge Black people's work and humanity, why are those who "amplify the voices that must be heard," not being equally recognized for their work?

How the 2020 Emmy nominations left the Black trans women of 'Pose' behind

<ul class="summary-list"><li>With new Latinx-centered shows airing, many people think we've reached a turning point in <keyword id="11994261" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="representation" source="Orion">representation</keyword>.</li><li>While shows like "Gentefied" and "Selena" celebrate <keyword id="12102948" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="latinx" source="Orion">Latinx</keyword> stories, their creators say there's still a lot of work to do.</li><li>For "Selena" creator Moisés Zamora, it's a priority to create opportunities for "Latinxs of all races."</li></ul>The fiery Latin wife. The sultry, sneaky housekeeper. The earnest, hardworking migrant worker. Tropes involving Latinx or Latino people are so deeply ingrained into our collective cultural lexicon that by now it seems almost impossible to imagine a world without them.Recently, numerous shows have sought to do away with these stereotypes in favor of more nuanced characters firmly grounded in the reality of Latinx people. These shows - which center Latinx actors and focus on the authentic experiences of their characters - have led some to <a href="https://www.latimes.com/entertainment-arts/tv/story/2020-10-26/netflix-selena-the-series-jaime-davila-campanario-entertainment">say there's a Latinx "wave"</a> moving through <keyword id="2370" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="hollywood" source="Orion">Hollywood</keyword>.Latinx culture and identity are complex. But because of racism, colorism, and xenophobia, the most well-represented part of the community in Hollywood right now is probably light-skinned Spanish-speaking Latinx people, which leads to the exclusion of Afro-Latinx and Indigenous Latinx people.And while Hollywood has started to reckon with the racism and discrimination that are so insidious in the industry, there's still a long way to go before all Latinx creatives - in addition to Black people, Asians, and other people of color - achieve the same access, opportunities, and investment as their white peers.<div type="image" title="los espookys hbo" height="4000" width="5333" msid="80652984" hostid="261"></div><h2><keyword id="11897475" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="movie" source="Orion">Movie</keyword> and <keyword id="11898468" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="TV" source="Orion">TV</keyword> show leads are still disproportionately non-Latinx Caucasians</h2>A 2019 <a href="http://assets.uscannenberg.org/docs/aii-study-latinos-in-film-2019.pdf">study from the University of Southern California's Annenberg Inclusion Initiative</a> found that in 100 of the top grossing movies from 2007 to 2018, only three films featured Latinx leads or coleads. And in the same 100 movies, only 4.5% of all speaking characters were Latinx.With TV shows, Latinx actors didn't fare much better. UCLA's <a href="https://socialsciences.ucla.edu/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/UCLA-Hollywood-Diversity-Report-2020-Television-10-22-2020.pdf">annual Hollywood diversity report</a> found that on broadcast scripted shows (those that air on NBC, ABC, and CBS) from 2018 to 2019, Latinx actors made up only 6.6% of the leads. But I feel like that wave, we're barely coming up on that wave."The filmmaker Moisés Zamora, the creator of the "Selena," which centers late Tejano singer Selena Quintanilla's rise to fame, also said there's a lot of work to do.Read more: <a href="https://www.insider.com/selena-yolanda-salidvar-moises-zamora-interview-2020-12">'Selena' creator Moisés Zamora says he 'did not reach out to' the singer's murderer Yolanda Saldívar before filming new Netflix series</a>"For me, it's highly, highly, highly a priority to be able to create opportunities for other Latinx individuals in the <keyword id="4578" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="entertainment" source="Orion">entertainment</keyword> business - Latinxs of all races, you know," the self-identified Mexican American gay immigrant, who recently started a Latinx-centered production company called Zone One, said."That includes Indigenous people and Afro Latinos, because we all come in different shapes and sizes." <div type="image" title="gentefied julissa calderon" height="2338" width="3117" msid="80652987" hostid="261"></div><h2>It's difficult for some people to understand that the Latinx community encompasses more than just light-skinned immigrants</h2>That those who identify as Latinx defy categorization and don't fit neatly into a single conception of race, ethnicity, or political identity has been a revelation for some people, especially after the <a href="https://time.com/5907525/latino-vote-2020-election/">2020 election</a>.Many were shocked that white Cuban Americans in Florida's Miami-Dade county voted for Trump, despite that people who identify as Latinx hail from a variety of countries and are not solely white-passing immigrants from Mexico.Following coverage of the election, the Los Angeles Times writer Esmeralda Bermudez gave a sharp rebuke on Twitter to those who couldn't conceptualize Latinxs as a diverse and multiracial group."This misconception comes from how little u bother knowing us, how superficially u cover us &amp; how absent we are in newsrooms," she said.Even the term "Latinx" - a <a href="https://www.npr.org/sections/codeswitch/2020/08/11/901398248/hispanic-latino-or-latinx-survey-says">gender-inclusive alternative to "Latino"</a> that <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2020/08/12/us/latinx-term-usage-hispanics-trnd/index.html">has divided some Spanish-speakers</a> - is a reminder that Latin identity is rich, complex, and ever-evolving.Unfortunately for many Latinx people, representation of Spanish speakers in Hollywood tends to skew white-passing, focusing on lighter-skinned actors from well-known South and Central American countries, notably Mexico.And despite that indigenous and Afro-Latinx people make up an important part of the community, they're rarely, if ever, portrayed in major TV shows or movies.Colorism and racism seem to have prevented the creation of more nuanced and well-rounded Latinx storytelling in Hollywood. Shows like Netflix's "Gentefied" and the <a href="https://www.elle.com/culture/movies-tv/a30226403/in-the-heights-trailer-lin-manuel-miranda-interview/">coming adaptation of "In the Heights,"</a> both of which feature Afro-Latinx characters and cast, are exceptions.<div type="image" title="gentefied karrie martin julissa calderon" height="2338" width="3117" msid="80652991" hostid="261"></div><h2>'Gentefied' is an example of how diverse Latinx stories can be told well</h2>Focusing on the struggles of a Mexican American family trying to keep their taco shop afloat, "Gentefied" features queer and Afro-Latinx characters.The show's cocreator, Linda Yvette Chavez, told Insider that since the beginning of her career, she's been trying to increase representation in the Latinx community."I have always known that the representation of our community is predicated on white supremacy," she said. "Like, very early on, I wanted to cast people in lead roles who were more dark-skinned or were indigenous."Chavez said that the racism and colorism in the Latinx community caused her to reject certain labels."I didn't really associate with the term 'Latina' because of the way that it kind of drowns out Black and indigenous faces and voices by ... grouping us all into one big group," she said."In recent years I've readopted it just to build solidarity and community with other folks who associate culturally with each other."Read more: <a href="https://www.insider.com/selena-moises-zamora-jennifer-lopez-christian-serratos-2020-12">'Selena' creator Moisés Zamora defends Jennifer Lopez portraying the late Tejano singer in the 1997 biopic</a>Chavez's "Gentefied" cocreator, Marvin Lemus, agreed, telling Insider that he thought Hollywood continually watered down or whitewashed Latinx stories up until recently."The thing that we were trying to remedy with 'Gentefied' was the fact that anytime Hollywood came out with something that was targeted to Latinos, I would watch it and I would be, like, 'I don't know who this is for, but it ain't for me,'" Lemus said.Lemus - the child of Mexican and Guatemalan immigrants who couldn't leave the US until he was in his 20s because of his mother's immigration status - said he didn't identify with the shows targeted at Latin American communities.But it was this feeling of not quite belonging to either culture that helped Lemus bond with Chavez and led them to create "Gentefied," where immigrants and identity make up the center of the story. "We were, like, 'We are going to make a show that is incredibly Chicano, that is unapologetically Mexican American,' because that's who we are," Lemus said.<div type="image" title="gentefied bts marvin lemus america ferrera" height="2338" width="3117" msid="80652994" hostid="261"></div><h2>Latinx creators said it's up to those in positions of power to change the industry</h2>Hollywood appears to be making small steps toward a more diverse representation of the Latinx community. The coming musical adaptations "In the Heights" and "West Side Story" <a href="https://www.indiewire.com/2020/03/spielberg-west-side-story-whitewashing-rita-moreno-1202218023/">feature Afro-Latinxs in their casts and story lines</a>.In FX's "Pose," MJ Rodriguez, an Afro-Latina, plays house mother Blanca Evangelista-Rodriguez, while her costar, Indya Moore, also of Afro-Latinx descent, plays a young model named Angel. The show doesn't really explore the issues Afro-Latinx people face within the community, but instead focuses on the characters' sexuality and experiences in the ballroom scene.Of course there are other Afro-Latinxs making waves in Hollywood, including Lala Anthony, Zoe Saldana, Tessa Thompson, and Lupita Nyong'o.While the industry has begun to feature Afro-Latinx actors, the portrayals of Latinx people on-screen still tend to focus on lighter-skinned Spanish-speaking immigrants, something Chavez said is up to those in positions of power to change.Read more: <a href="https://www.insider.com/justina-adorno-abc-grand-hotel-interview-2019-7">Justina Adorno, the breakout star of ABC's 'Grand Hotel,' wants the Latinx community to be more welcoming</a>"White and mestizo and light-skinned Latinx are always the ones who are rising to the top tier, and we have to be the ones who move the needle and have to help support the movement," Chavez said. To succeed as a Latinx creator in Hollywood, it helps to be white-passing

<ul class="summary-list"><li>"<keyword id="9289051" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="cancel-culture">Cancel culture</keyword>," or the idea that people too often pile onto others for bad behavior, emerged only in the past few years but has become a ubiquitous phrase among English speakers.</li><li>President Barack Obama and President Donald Trump have both criticized a <keyword id="24504" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="culture">culture</keyword> of relentlessly calling people out for alleged wrongdoing. In an address at Mount Rushmore last month, Trump said it was "the very definition of totalitarianism."</li><li>As social-media users decry cancel culture and poke fun at the criticism itself, the phrase has come to describe a wide variety of behaviors and their consequences.</li></ul>In a congressional antitrust hearing on July 29, Republican Rep. Jim Jordan of Ohio had <a href="https://mashable.com/article/congressional-hearing-antitrust-jim-jordan-cancel-culture/">a specific question for Apple CEO Tim Cook</a>."Mr. Cook," Jordan said, "is the 'cancel culture' mob dangerous?""Cancel culture," which President Donald Trump last month called "the very definition of totalitarianism," describes the phenomenon of frequent public pile-ons criticizing a person, business, movement, or idea.The phrase — a surprisingly recent creation — has become ubiquitous in pop culture and reached the highest halls of power, used to describe "cancellations" large and small.On one end of the spectrum are people like <a href="https://www.insider.com/bill-cosby-first-prison-interview-no-remorse-for-early-release-2019-11">Bill Cosby</a>, <a href="https://www.insider.com/celebrities-knew-harvey-weinstein-sexual-abuse-ronan-farrow-catch-kill-2019-10">Harvey Weinstein</a>, and <a href="https://www.insider.com/gayle-king-r-kelly-girlfriend-regret-relationship-2019-3">R. Kelly</a> who were canceled by the public before their sex-crimes trials. On the other end are everyday people like David Shor, <a href="https://www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/2020/06/stop-firing-innocent/613615/">who faced criticism on Twitter</a> after he tweeted a study from an academic journal questioning the political consequences of violent and peaceful protests. Shor, who tweeted the link during the George Floyd protests, was fired, though the company has said it wasn't over the tweet.<a href="https://www.merriam-webster.com/words-at-play/cancel-culture-words-were-watching"></a>Despite the seemingly positive intentions of many cancellations — to "demand greater accountability from public figures," as <a href="https://www.merriam-webster.com/words-at-play/cancel-culture-words-were-watching">Merriam-Webster's evaluation of the phrase</a> notes — people tend to call out cancel culture itself as a negative movement, suggesting that the consequences of cancellation are too harsh in minor instances or represent rushed judgment in complicated situations.Others have criticized that criticism, saying cancel culture <a href="https://www.newstatesman.com/science-tech/2020/07/cancel-culture-does-not-exist">doesn't exist</a>.With the varied usage and wide debate around the term, it's reasonable to ask where it came from and how it became a part of everyday speech.<h2>The phrase was popularized only in the past few years. Now it's everywhere.</h2>"Cancel culture" came into the collective consciousness around 2017, after the idea of "canceling" celebrities for problematic actions or statements became popular.Lisa Nakamura, a professor at the University of Michigan who studies digital media's connections to race, gender, and sexuality, <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2018/06/28/style/is-it-canceled.html">told The New York Times in 2018</a> that cancellation was a "cultural boycott" of a certain <keyword id="6355064" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Celebrity">celebrity</keyword>, brand, company, or concept.Merriam-Webster, the American publisher of dictionaries and thesauruses, connected cancel culture with the #MeToo movement, which coincided with the rise of the term's popularity online. New allegations seemed to come out daily, and attitudes quickly shifted against the accused.The trend of calling someone out laid the groundwork for full-on cancellations. It has roots in early-2010s Tumblr blogs, notably Your Fave Is Problematic, where fandoms would discuss why their favorite stars were imperfect, <a href="https://www.vox.com/culture/2019/12/30/20879720/what-is-cancel-culture-explained-history-debate">Aja Romano reported for Vox in 2019</a>.<div type="image" title="One Direction Your fave is problematic tumblr" height="1070" width="1028" msid="77394063" hostid="261"></div>While "canceling" has been used colloquially for the better part of a decade, "cancel culture" is much more recent.For example, one of the earliest uses of the phrase on <keyword id="6354616" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Twitter">Twitter</keyword> came from Myles McNutt, a TV critic and assistant professor at Old Dominion University, who used it in a tweet in February 2014 to refer to the cancellations of TV series."It's unfortunate how renew/cancel culture has made 'not renewed early' read as canceled — 'wait and see until pilots come in' is normal," McNutt tweeted.McNutt's tweet got only four retweets and four likes. McNutt told Insider in an email that he was referring to "renew/cancel" culture and that he didn't consider "cancel culture" a "legible phrase" at the time.Before then, the term had been used a handful of times on Twitter, and nearly all had different meanings.The phrase "cancel culture" experienced notable growth in 2016 and 2017, particularly on Black Twitter, according to research by Insider and reporting by <a href="https://www.merriam-webster.com/words-at-play/cancel-culture-words-were-watching">Merriam-Webster</a> and <a href="https://www.vox.com/culture/2019/12/30/20879720/what-is-cancel-culture-explained-history-debate">Vox</a>. Insider identified fewer than 100 tweets or threads with the phrase "cancel culture" before 2018.The writer <a href="http://shanitahubbard.com/">Shanita Hubbard</a> used the phrase in a tweet about the controversy surrounding Gabby Douglas in November 2017. The Olympic gymnast was ostensibly canceled after she appeared to blame survivors of sexual assault; in response to her teammate Aly Raisman's tweet about sexual assault, <a href="https://twitter.com/Simone_Biles/status/931655875227475968">Douglas said</a> that "it is our responsibility as women to dress modestly and be classy."Responding to the backlash against Douglas, Hubbard tweeted: "Let's talk 'cancel culture.' Personally, I am willing to give a lot of grace to young Black girls simply because the world doesn't." The tweet got more than 6,000 likes.The phrase continued to gain popularity on Twitter in late 2017, with several people writing "cancel culture" in quotation marks to describe the trend. Insider found that most of those tweets referred to cancel culture negatively.In addition to Hubbard, other Twitter users made similar arguments that year. "Cancel culture is SO toxic, you can't even learn from your mistakes anymore because you're not even allowed to make any," <a href="https://twitter.com/brownskinangeI/status/934438567119597569">another tweet in November 2017 said</a>.<h2>The concept gained steam among celebrities and influencers in 2018</h2>Google <keyword id="15467" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="trends">Trends</keyword> data indicates that there was almost no search interest in the phrase "cancel culture" until the second half of 2018 and early 2019. The most search interest came in July of this year.<div type="image" title="google trends cancel culture" height="617" width="1257" msid="77394067" hostid="261"></div>The top definition of "cancelled" (the British spelling) <a href="https://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=Cancelled">on Urban Dictionary</a> was posted in March 2018. The top definition of "<a href="https://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=Canceled">canceled</a>" on the website was posted the next year and has less engagement.A series of fleeting cancellations of celebrities including Taylor Swift and Kanye West brought about more discourse. "Almost everyone worth knowing has been canceled by someone," <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2018/06/28/style/is-it-canceled.html">Jonah Engel Bromwich wrote for The Times in June 2018</a> in one of the first news stories to analyze the trend. In a <a href="https://www.vice.com/en_ca/article/8xb9x5/logan-paul-and-the-myth-of-cancel-culture">Vice Canada story</a> the next month about the resurgence of the YouTuber and mega-influencer Logan Paul after inappropriate behavior, Connor Garel called cancel culture a "myth."The comedian Kevin Hart faced intense online backlash in the fall of 2018 when his homophobic tweets resurfaced after he was chosen to host the 2019 Oscars. Ellen DeGeneres and others defended Hart, who said he shouldn't be judged based on a statement he made years ago. In the end, Hart <a href="https://www.vanityfair.com/hollywood/2018/12/oscars-host-kevin-hart-responds-to-criticism">stepped down from the hosting gig</a> and refused to issue another apology. He later <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/entertainment/kevin-hart-speaks-out-cancel-culture">blamed cancel culture</a>. Though much of the media attention was critical of Hart, he has since found wide-ranging career success.Still, anti-cancel-culture rhetoric continued on social media. Zolita, a German American singer, said in a <a href="https://twitter.com/zolitaofficial/status/1075672661341089793">December 2018 tweet</a> that "cancel culture needs to be canceled."Indya Moore, who stars on FX's TV show "Pose," <a href="https://twitter.com/IndyaMoore/status/1076279388168163328">wrote that month</a> that "nobody deserves to be defined by the worse mistakes they ever made.""Especially when they aren't consistently stubborn in complicity," Moore continued. "We really need to cut down on this cancel culture, it's drowing everyone and it is unnecessary."By 2019, more news articles had analyzed the trend, and "cancel culture" became a piece of mainstream vernacular. A <a href="https://time.com/5735403/cancel-culture-is-not-real/">November op-ed article in Time</a> was titled "Cancel Culture Is Not Real—At Least Not in the Way People Think." Chi Luu, JSTOR Daily's resident linguist, <a href="https://daily.jstor.org/cancel-culture-is-chaotic-good/">wrote about the trend</a> in December. <a href="https://www.vox.com/culture/2019/12/30/20879720/what-is-cancel-culture-explained-history-debate">Vox's Romano</a> wrote about it the same month.<h2>Eventually, the term became politicized</h2><div type="image" title="Trump rushmore" height="933" width="1867" msid="77394068" hostid="261"></div>The idea of cancel culture eventually found its way into mainstream <keyword id="6358883" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="politics">politics</keyword>.Former President Barack Obama <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2019/10/31/us/politics/obama-woke-cancel-culture.html">criticized the trend</a> in an interview about youth activism at an Obama Foundation summit in October, though he didn't use the phrase. "That's not activism. That's not bringing about change," he said. "If all you're doing is casting stones, you're probably not going to get that far. That's easy to do."Many of the politicians and pundits who have recently come out against cancel culture are conservative. Sen. Tom Cotton of Arkansas, whose <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2020/06/03/opinion/tom-cotton-protests-military.html">controversial June op-ed article in The Times</a> led to the resignation of the paper's opinion editor, said that the critical response to his column showed that cancel culture had gone too far."Cancel culture, whether in its Maoist or its Jacobin forms, ultimately is animated by a single idea—that America at its core is fundamentally irredeemable and wicked," <a href="https://www.cotton.senate.gov/?p=speech&amp;id=13791379">Cotton wrote on his website</a>.The White House adviser Stephen Miller <a href="https://www.breitbart.com/politics/2020/07/26/steve-miller-cancel-culture-seeks-silence-majority/?utm_source=facebook&amp;utm_medium=socialcial">recently made a similar claim</a>. "Cancel culture is a very grave threat to American freedom," he said on Larry O'Connor's radio show.Trump condemned cancel culture in his <a href="https://www.whitehouse.gov/briefings-statements/remarks-president-trump-south-dakotas-2020-mount-rushmore-fireworks-celebration-keystone-south-dakota/">Independence Day address</a> at Mount Rushmore, saying it was being used as a "political weapon" by protesters fighting for the destruction of statues of American slaveholders. "It is completely alien to our culture and our values, and it has absolutely no place in the United States of America," he said.Common conservative depictions of cancel culture compare the idea to mob rule and authoritarianism. In a <a href="https://www.wsj.com/articles/get-ready-for-the-struggle-session-11552003346">column last year</a>, The Wall Street Journal's Peggy Noonan compared it to China's Cultural Revolution."Social media is full of swarming political and ideological mobs," she wrote. "In an interesting departure from democratic tradition, they don't try to win the other side over. They only condemn and attempt to silence."Last month, the columnist Bari Weiss wrote in a resignation letter announcing her departure from The Times that "Twitter has become its ultimate editor." She later <a href="https://thehill.com/homenews/administration/510115-bari-weiss-rip-cancel-culture-as-social-murder-on-bill-maher-show">described</a> cancel culture as "social murder."In her 2019 JSTOR Daily article, Luu said the anti-cancel-culture sentiment was rooted in the negative discourse about groups or movements — and it's the same notion that has led to criticism of Black Lives Matter, Occupy Wall Street, and other social-justice movements."The kind of language that's used to talk about groups of people assembled together—or their collective actions seeking to change the status quo—often maligns communities as irrational, 'mobs' or 'rioters' with uncontrolled, invalid emotions, a kind of faceless contagion that presents a threat to civilized, law-abiding society and the ruling establishment," Luu wrote.<h2>Amid the COVID-19 pandemic and heightened activism, cancellations have increased — but they've been less controversial</h2>As the COVID-19 pandemic has forced many people into social isolation, and as activism has spiked around the Black Lives Matter movement, <a href="https://www.insider.com/celebrity-fight-canceled-quarantine-why-were-seeing-feuds-doja-lana-2020-5">cancellations appear to have reached a high point</a>.The YouTubers <a href="https://www.insider.com/shane-dawson-tati-westbrook-video-jeffree-star-drama-timeline-cancelled-2020-6">Shane Dawson and Jeffree Star</a>, celebrities like <a href="https://www.insider.com/doja-cat-racist-tinychat-song-lyrics-canceled-twitter-dojacatisoverparty-wearesorrydoja-2020-5">Doja Cat</a> and <a href="https://www.insider.com/lana-del-rey-fka-twigs-video-backlash-women-of-color-2020-5">Lana Del Rey</a>, and <a href="https://www.insider.com/bon-apptit-timeline-allegations-drama-culture-race-andy-alex-sohla-2020-6">figures in traditional media</a> have recently faced waves of criticism of controversial content or bad behavior. Many of these cancellations have had intense consequences, such as firing or brand separation.But many people online have framed the criticism around accountability rather than cancellation, saying that people in power are finally being asked to address problematic pasts.Private people have experienced an uptick in public criticism too. Videos of white women — <a href="https://www.insider.com/karen-meme-origin-the-history-of-calling-women-karen-white-2020-5">sometimes referred to as "Karens"</a> — going on racist or generally inappropriate public tirades <a href="https://www.insider.com/karen-compilation-timeline-white-women-racism-2020-6">have been massively popular</a>. Many of these women, including <a href="https://www.insider.com/christian-cooper-speaks-out-about-central-park-amy-cooper-2020-5">Amy Cooper</a>, who called the police on a Black birdwatcher in Central Park in May, faced real-life consequences: She lost her job and temporarily lost her dog after the video went viral. Their defenders have blamed cancel culture, with one op-ed article proclaiming that <a href="https://pittnews.com/article/158258/opinions/opinion-cancel-cancel-culture/">"Karens" were the victims in these situations</a>.Hubbard, the chair of a National Association of Black Journalists task force, said cancel culture was the wrong phrase to use for these instances where sleuths on social media identify a person caught on camera acting racist or being offensive."I think it's unfair for anybody to say what happened to Amy was cancel culture," she said.
