<ul><li>SpotDraft recently raised $1.5 million in a pre-series A from Binny Bansal’s 021 Capital, Freshworks CEO Girish Mathrubootham, among others. </li><li>The legal tech startup offers contract creation, management and analysis. </li><li>Indian unicorn entrepreneurs are turning into investors with a purpose – to help startups scale. </li></ul>A small Indian legal tech startup has been able to do what many early-stage entrepreneurs only dream of. SpotDraft has recently raised $1.5 million in a pre-series A round from Binny Bansal’s 021 Capital and several marquee investors like Girish Mathrubootham (Freshworks), Peeyush Ranjan (VP Engineering, Google Inc – former CTO Flipkart) and Indus Khaitan (Chief of Growth, Chargebee) among others. SpotDraft, which started off as an online platform to help people create contracts and automate their invoices, has evolved to offer contract creation, contract management and contract analysis. For example, it claims it helps businesses create a solid legally-binding contract, which they can negotiate and explore online. Its Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence-enabled services allow them to share with entrepreneurs the good, bad and ugly aspects about the contract. It can quickly help identify compliant and non-compliant clauses of a contract. Shashank Bijapur, CEO and co-founder, SpotDraft spoke to Business Insider to spill the secrets on how they convinced the marquee investors to place their bets on a startup which is just about two years old. According to Bijapur, what worked for them was the value proposition of the business. “At a high level, the problem statement and solution were very clear. Legal as a problem is ripe for disruption making way for complete automation of legal processes that a business has to undergo,” he said. Legal paperwork is one of the many hurdles that businesses and entrepreneurs face, especially in a market like India where these tend to be time-consuming. Compliance is also increasingly becoming an important exercise, as regulations become more complex. It also helped that Bijapur, a Harvard law grad and Wall Street lawyer and his co-founder Madhav Bhagat, a Carnegie Mellon graduate and Google, New York employee, had their background to vouch for them as well. With the funds raised from this round, it is looking to focus on growth in terms of team, sales and development. In the near future, it plans to expand geographies to Europe, US and Middle East, while also looking to grow revenue 10X over the next 12-14 months. The investment is also the latest example of Indian unicorn founders turning into evangelists for startups in the country, through mentoring and investments. Many aren’t just looking at being moneybags but also contribute to the success of other startups. “As founders, the access to capital may not have been as difficult as finding the right people for your business – people who can take us from 0 to 1. The value that these investors brought on board is immense and even before we were given the term sheet, we were introduced to half a dozen clients,” said Bijapur. Currently, the startup has over a dozen multi-national corporations as well as 1,000 SMEs as customers. Why India’s Unicorn founders backed this barely two-year-old legal tech startup

This could mean that space projects could potentially get cheaper for Indian startups, according to India’s Finance Minister <keyword id="129243" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Nirmala-Sitharaman">Nirmala Sitharaman</keyword>. “A lot of startups and individuals have spent time developing space-related technologies. Unfortunately because of Indian regulations, they have been unable to use ISRO’s available facilities for even testing their products,” she said. The big boost for startups According to DataLabs by <a href="https://inc42.com/datalab/to-infinity-and-beyond-indias-space-technology-startups-are-starting-to-blow-their-thrusters/">Inc42</a>, there are about 120 active startups working in the space sector right now. And, most of them emerged in or after 2014. As of 2019, their cumulative funding stood at $6.2 million. This includes some big names like Bellatrix, Dhruva Space, and Team Indus. Other’s like Kawa Space is even providing space-as-a-service — a change in real estate models from asset ownership to monetisation of access and services that include physical space. Reforms announced include levelling the playing field for private companies in satellites, launches and space-based services by introducing predictable policy and regulator environment to private players. “We want them to co-travellers with us, which is why the private sector is being encouraged,” Sitharaman explained. Private sector players will now be allowed to use ISRO facilities and other relevant assets to improve their capacities. In addition, future projects for planetary exploration, outer space travel will be open to the private sector. ISRO treasure trove of data Startups will also now have access to the treasure trove of data with ISRO as geospatial data policies become liberalised to provide remote-sensing data to tech-entrepreneurs. “There’s a lot of geospatial data in India for Indians, particularly for startups looking to do irrigation work, drought-prone area development work, groundwater work — they don’t most often get the data within India. They get from abroad, paying through their nose for the good work that they do for India itself,” she said. However, the government will only be doing so with a lot of caution balancing the sensitivity of the sector against the advantage that’s at stake for Indian startups who are also doing pioneering work. ISRO treasure trove of testing facilities and data will now be open to startups and private players

As of today, about a million employees are at the brink of job loss in the auto sector, and many more are already unemployed. But it’s not just the lack of avenues to seek jobs that’s causing the crisis. There is also lack of awareness, preparedness, skills, training and, of course, opportunity. As many as 92% of Indian youth are unaware of online placement services, according to a new survey launched at the 6th Annual edition of India Education Entrepreneurship Day (IEED) 2019 hosted by TiE Delhi-NCR in New Delhi. The Indus Entrepreneurs (TiE) is a non-profit organisation devoted to entrepreneurs in all industries, at all stages, from incubation, throughout the entrepreneurial lifecycle. "TiE's mission has always been to gather major ecosystem stakeholders under one roof with the overarching aim of driving the country towards a progressive future," said Geetika Dayal, Executive Director, TiE Delhi-NCR, who hosted the event. The problem begins right from the point of getting the facts right. According to Sabina Dewan, President &amp; Executive Director, Just Jobs Network, over 12 million people enter the labour force in India every year while the data <a href="http://www.newindianexpress.com/nation/2018/may/22/only-475-million-join-workforce-annually-in-india-not-12-million-as-claimed-1817846.html">shows actual numbers to be less than 5 million</a>. The youth unemployment rate in India is three times that of the overall unemployment, according to the survey. “Our objective is to bring some of the pressing challenges in the Indian education and employment ecosystem to the notice of policy-makers, market participants, and other key stakeholders,” said Rahil Rangwala, Program Director, Michael &amp; Susan Dell Foundation, a non-profit organisation that works on training poor children in underdeveloped countries for future employment. The organisation was set by the founder of Dell in 1999. Further, about 56% of the respondents asserted that their education and/or vocational training was inadequate to improve their prospects of landing a better, high-value job. “Most people believe that obtaining a three-month-long training or skilling session will compensate for years of education and experience. This is preposterous. Education and skill development need to be considered in a continuum.”said Dewan. It also revealed that 38% of young professionals surveyed want to pursue entrepreneurship. On the other hand, 88% of respondents think they lack a technical diploma or certificate.

Guwahati, May 6 () Multinational companies lookingto move out of China should consider Assam, with its abundantnatural resources, strategic location and robust industrialinfrastructure, as their destination for setting up productionfacilities in India, state Industries Minister Chandra MohanPatowary said on Wednesday."Many American, Japanese and Korean companies arecontemplating to shift their production facilities from Chinato India and we hope to woo these firms to set up productionfacilities in Assam," Patowary told reporters here.The state government has urged the Department forPromotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), InvestIndia, the Japan External Trade Organisation (JETRO), the US-India Business Council and the US Chamber of Commerce toadvise the firms in this regard, he said.The Industries and Commerce Department has engaged arenowned firm to assess the impact of the lockdown on theindustrial sector in Assam and suggest a policy framework toattract industries that are planning to move out of China,Patowary said.The department is also in touch with the DPIIT and theJETRO for setting up a Japanese industrial township in Assamto attract investment of industries based in the East Asiancountry, he said.A special cell has been set up at the stategovernment's 'Assam Startup -- The Nest' incubator to guideand mentor enterprising youths returning to Assam fromdifferent states, the minister said."Interested youths registering with the digitalplatform will be mentored at IIM, Calcutta. The Union Ministry ofChemicals and Fertilizers has been requested to support theAssam government in setting up a pharma park in the state," hesaid.The state government had on Tuesday issued revisedguidelines allowing all industries with supply chain torestart operation without the need for special permission.It also allowed warehouses and godowns to operate,vehicles to ferry goods and construction activities torecommence.However, safety norms such as wearing masks,maintaining social distancing and sanitising vehicles andfactory premises have to be ensured.A total of 820 industrial units with 28,027 workersoperated in the state on Wednesday, the minister said.Patowary also asked the environment and forest, labourand urban development departments to extend the validity oftrade licences, permissions and clearances issued toindustries and business establishments from March 31 to June30. It turned unicorn (startup with a valuation of over $1 billion) in November 2019 </li><li>Its popularity skyrocketed after IPL and ICC signed them as the official partner.</li></ul>In 2009, Harsh Jain and Bhavit Sheth were living a fantasy. Those were times when iPhones were just becoming popular and smartphones are not all-pervading like they are –right now. Even for those who owned such phones, 2G powered data did not come cheap. Yet, the Founders of Dream11 were trying to raise money for a fantasy cricket game shaped after EPL, after IPL was launched a year back. “We had 150 people say ‘No’ before we got to our first funding. <ul><li>India's new labour codes, which include a revised definition of wages, are supposed to kick in starting April 1.</li><li>The new definition is expected to shrink your cash-in-hand salary at the end of the month but boost long term benefits like gratuity and leave encashment.</li><li>Indian companies are hoping that the implementation of these rules will get delayed as businesses are still reeling from the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.</li></ul>Indian companies are hoping that the government will delay the rollout of the country’s new labour codes or at least provide some clarity ahead of the April 1 deadline. If that doesn’t happen, it could mean a sharp cut in the cash-in-hand salary that you get to take home once the new financial year kicks off. “Ideal would be if the rules get notified and everybody gets a little bit of a breather. The new legislation applies and only kicks in let us say after x,y, z days. That would be ideal but that's wishful thinking at this point,” said Shambhavi Solanki, vice president of corporate human resources (HR) at Policy Bazaar during The Indus Entrepreneurs (TiE) webinar on March 18. Timing is a concern for most companies. Businesses are still reeling from the impact of COVID-19 and the pandemic is not yet over. “It’s going to be a crazy implementation and I have huge questions. And, I am worried, I am anxious, to be honest,” said Sagar Daryani, the co-founder and chief executive of Wow! Momos. The National Association of Software and Service Companies’ (NASSCOM) Ashish Aggarwal believes that the rules are most likely to kick in May or June, as per his discussions with the government and the industry. “Overall, the labour codes are quite welcome. But, as with any new law, there are these initial stages where there is a lot of uncertainty,” he said. India’s new definition of wages The issue at the heart of the matter is the Indian government’s new definition of wages. It includes all remuneration, whether by way of salaries, allowance or otherwise. Exclusions — like house rent allowance (HRA), provident fund (PF) contribution and others — still exist but can’t be more than 50% of your basic salary. This means that even though companies have not been explicitly asked to redefine their compensation structure for employees, they may not have a choice but to take a second look. According to Vishal Grover, a senior consultant at professional services firm Aon Hewitt, companies in India are currently considering three options: <ul><li>A large part of the salary gets technically defined as basic pay, and the balance moves to exclusions.</li><li>They don’t change anything. They keep the structure as it is. But use the new definition of wages for all social security programmes.</li><li>A sort of a middle ground, where the basic is close to 50% and the balance of 50% is made up of exclusions.</li></ul> of salary that goes towards your PF. And, it will be at the expense of other allowances leading to lower take-home salary. Depending on the ratio between basic pay and gross pay, the reduction in cash-in-hand salary to take home would range from 3% to 8% if PF contributions are increased, according to Grover. This means that even if you get a wage hike in 2021, it's unlikely that there will be any major increase in the amount of money that actually gets deposited into your bank account. Digital payments leader <keyword id="6357940" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Paypal">PayPal</keyword>’s fifth edition of the Incubator Challenge is back and the company is inviting application for early-stage financial technology companies, including <keyword id="6362513" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Startups">startups</keyword> across the country specializing in loyalty, machine learning, big data and logistics, among others to compete for a spot in the PayPal Incubator. 
 
The challenge was launched in 2013 in partnership with The Indus Entrepreneurs (TiE). 
 
“Enabling and co-creating with our ecosystem has been core to PayPal’s presence in India. The PayPal Incubator, with its state-of-the-art facilities backed by our 17 years of global experience and expertise in the sector, will help budding start-ups compete in a very competitive business environment,” said Guru Bhat – GM Technology &amp; Head of Engineering– PayPal. 
 
Interested startups can apply for the PayPal Incubator at https://www.paypal-incubator.com/india/apply/. Applications will close on January 31, 2017. Successful applicants will be contacted to undergo two rounds of pitching before the final companies are selected by a jury panel. The panel will include senior leaders from PayPal as well as prominent venture capitalists and entrepreneurs in India. 
 
To date, the PayPal incubator has hosted ten startups and provides access to global mentors, angel investors and venture capitalists.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘<keyword id="3003094" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Startup-India">Startup India</keyword>’ initiative kick-started at Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi, and <keyword id="6357722" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="silicon-valley">Silicon Valley</keyword> bigwigs hope on big tickets announcements by the prime minister. 
 
With the Startup India plan, Modi wants to have a Silicon Valley-type environment in India, giving wings to entrepreneurial dreams of Indians and boosting innovation and employment. 
 Bigwigs like <keyword id="357983" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Masayoshi-Son">Masayoshi Son</keyword>, founder and CEO SoftBank; Travis Kalanick, founder of Uber; and Adam Neumann, founder of WeWork are in Delhi and interacting with startup owners and entrepreneurs on future actions and growth of startups in India. 
 
Modi is expected to announce a roadmap and policies for startups in India. 
 
“We feel a lot of startups fail and so ease of starting and shutting down a company is very important and then the ease of raising money is crucial to success of startups," Venkatesh Shukla, president of The Indus Entrepreneurs (TiE), told ET.

Together, they will develop Indo-US Life Science Sister Innovation Hub so as to enhance science-based entrepreneurship, research, academia and businesses by leveraging each other's ecosystems. 
 
Department of Biotechnology and Prakash Lab, Stanford University signed another MoU on Foldscope -- a frugal science innovation that has emerged from a lab of an Indian with majority of Indians working in this laboratory.This lab will work with DBT to further develop and deploy the products from this lab. 
 
National Association of Software and Service Companies (NASSCOM) and the Indus Entrepreneurs signed a MoU to collaborate in a mutually satisfactory form and manner in order to support the creation of a vibrant ecosystem to foster technology entrepreneurship in India and Silicon Valley. 
 
IIM Ahmedabad's Centre for Innovation and Entrepreneurship (CIIE) and Lester Centre for Entrepreneurship of the Haas Business School of the University of California, signed a MoU to collaborate on mutual incubation, and support each other's activities of mutual interest. 
 
CIIE also signed a MoU with Los Angeles Cleantech Incubator to extend NGIN Membership benefits to CIIE. 
 
The CIIE /LACI NGIN Landing Pad Programme is a reciprocal initiative that enables entrepreneurs and innovators in the cleantech space to gain access to the California and Indian markets. 
 
The programme will assist early and growth stage cleantech companies with markexpansion through partnerships and funding opportunities in California and India. 
 
IIM Ahmedabad's CIIE signed a MoU with Tata Trust for founding partner for the Bharat Fund, which will provide seed funding to Indian entrepreneurs. 
 
CIIE also signed a MoU with Google to support technology and impact entrepreneurs through strategic support.
