<ul><li>Content and services in India are being localised but terms and conditions for <keyword id="6391249" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="consent">consent</keyword> aren’t always in a local language.</li><li>Rakesh Deshmukh, co-founder and CEO of Indus OS, points out that non-English language internet users aren’t always tech-savvy.</li><li>This puts them at risk of giving away data without realising it.</li></ul>Localising content in India is a big trend. For most first-time internet users in India, English is not their first language — it’s not even their second. Global brands like <keyword id="6355629" type="DEFINITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="google">Google</keyword>, Netflix, and Amazon are already on the path to diversification by offering Indian users multiple local language options. While there the quantity of local content is growing, the same can’t be said about consent. English-speaking users don’t necessarily read all the terms and conditions when giving permissions to apps. When the fine print is in a foreign language and filled with technical details, the problem gets compounded when it extends to local languages. Local users aren’t always the most tech-savvy individuals according to Rakesh Deshmukh, co-founder and CEO of Indus OS and the Indus App Bazaar— the largest indigenous app store in India. It currently has over 50 million users with plans to hit 100 million by the end of the year. "They might not be able to understand the permission that applications are asking for and giving those permissions away could harm them," he told Business Insider in an interview. The power to change things lies with regulators and developers The <keyword id="7729349" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indus-App-Bazaar">Indus App Bazaar</keyword> has two layers of security checks in play. One is its own internal review, and second is the security layer provided by Google. "For our own internal security, we conduct audits to check that all the data is secure. Then there’s the Android Security Framework which prevents malware applications from being installed," explains Deshmukh. Even internally, there are three sub-levels — an anti-virus check, an internal review team and proprietary tools to identify malicious apps or fake applications. Despite these safeguards, it is possible for data breaches to occur, which is why prevention is generally considered to be the best cure. "Larger stakeholders here are the regulatory body and the developers. From the app store point of view, if the app is malicious — we can blackball it. But we don’t have control over what applications are doing with the data once users have given their consent — that is beyond our purview," said Deshmukh. Which is why it’s so important to learn about cyber threats and the cybersecurity basics before accessing the internet, like ensuring you have your own anti-virus in place and only giving access permissions to applications that you’re sure that you can trust. New Delhi, Jul 2 () Mobile advertising company Affle on Thursday said it will acquire 8 per cent stake in smartphone operating system firm Indus OS. "Affle (India) Ltd through its subsidiaries announced the signing of a definitive agreement to acquire 8 per cent ownership in OSLabs Pte Ltd, Singapore, (Indus OS). Indus OS operates India's largest independent indigenous app store, with key investment from Samsung Venture Investment Corporation," Affle said in a statement. According to a regulatory filing, Affle will pay USD 2.86 million or about Rs 21 crore to Indus OS for the stake. "We derive significant synergies with the Indus App Bazaar which, through its multi-lingual capabilities, deeply enhances our vernacular scale and the verticalisation strategy. "It strengthens Affle's position as the enabling platform for the indigenous apps ecosystem in India, ensuring a digitally inclusive growth for our customers," Affle Chairman, MD and CEO Anuj Khanna Sohum said. Indus OS has 'Indus App Bazaar', which comprises over four lakh apps accessible in English and 12 Indian languages -- Hindi, Gujarati, Marathi, Tamil, Telugu, Urdu, Odia, Punjabi, Malayalam, Bengali, Assamese and Kannada. "Indus OS platform with its indigenous app store capabilities, thousands of apps and powered by a robust app recommendation engine is deployed by Samsung and many Indian OEMs (original equipment makers). <ul><li>A non-profit organisation has filed an antitrust case against <keyword id="6354427" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Apple" source="Orion">Apple</keyword> over in-app payment concerns.</li><li>The petitioner says that the 30% commission rate harms customers and app developers, creating barriers to entry and increasing costs.</li><li>The iPhone-maker has been the subject of similar lawsuits in other markets like the European Union, while regulators in South Korea and Japan have used the law to force the company to concede.</li></ul>Apple has been hit with an antitrust case over concerns that the iPhone-maker abused its dominant position over in-app payments. This comes after the company was hit with similar antitrust lawsuits in other markets, notably in the European Union and Japan. According to a <a href="https://www.reuters.com/technology/exclusive-apple-hit-with-antitrust-case-india-over-in-app-payments-issues-2021-09-02/">Reuters</a> report, the antitrust case against Apple was filed by a relatively less known non-profit group, “Together We Fight Society”, based in Rajasthan. "The existence of the 30% commission means that some app developers will never make it to the market. This could also result in consumer harm,” the group was quoted as saying by Reuters. It is worth noting that the case has been filed with the Competition Commission of India, a statutory body of the Indian government set up to promote competition and prevent activities that have an adverse effect on competition. The group that filed the case suggests that Apple’s 30% commission acts as a barrier for app developers while also hurting customers. "These payments and policies act as a hindrance for many developers due to which they never make it to the market," said Rakesh Deshmukh, co-founder of Indus App Bazaar, an Indian alternative app store. Apple has already buckled under pressure and conceded to some extent when it comes to in-app payments in Japan, allowing apps and services like Netflix, Spotify and Kindle link to their web pages to accept payments from their respective subscribers. This means that Apple will not be able to take a cut of the payments that these services receive from their subscribers in Japan. This, the company said, will benefit 99% of the developers by slashing their commission costs in half. Apple, on its part, reduced the commission rate to 15% from 30% for developers who have not crossed $1 million in revenue yet – beyond this, the rate is changed back to 30%. Apple hit with antitrust case in India alleging its 30% commission is unfair for customers and app developers

Mumbai-based <keyword id="3212715" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Indus-OS">Indus OS</keyword>, creator of the world's first regional operating system, has left behind <keyword id="6354427" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Apple">Apple</keyword> and <keyword id="10387" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Microsoft">Microsoft</keyword> to take the second spot in the Indian smartphone operating system market — a first for a local software maker. 
 According to data from Counterpoint Research with ET, Indus OS had a 5.6% share in the total smartphone market during January-March, ahead of Apple's <keyword id="75489" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="IOS">iOS</keyword> which was at no. 5 with 2.5% share and Microsoft's Windows which had a share of 0.3% — same as Samsung's Tizen OS izen OS - at no. 7. 
 "We're adding close to half a million activations every month and we expect to double this within the next six months," said Indus OS chief executive officer Rakesh Deshmukh. "We have targeted 100 million customers by 2018," he added. The company which started putting its OS in <keyword id="71696" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Micromax">Micromax</keyword> smartphones about nine months ago, aims to put its OS in one in every six phones sold in the country by 2017. 
 Indus OS is available on 25 models <keyword id="6355645" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="android">Android</keyword> still leads the Indian smartphone market with 83.8% share for the first quarter of the year, during which 24.8 million devices were sold. Xiaomi's has taken the No 3 position with a 4.1% share held by its MIUI operating system, while Cynaogen OS - used by Micromax's subsidiary YU Televentures on five models - is at No 4 with a 2.8% share of the market. 
 India has about 300 million internet users, which can potentially rise to 500 million within this year as per telecom minister Ravi Shankar Prasad, but not all are comfortable using English for all transactions. As internet companies ike <keyword id="6355629" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Google">Google</keyword> and Facebook look to add more users which will come from tier III and IV cities and from rural India, most companies recognise the need to have local language support to attract these users. 
 
Indus OS, which raised $5 million in a series A funding from investors led by Omidyar Network in January, has larger reach than Google's own stock Android OS used on Android One phones, which is only available on about 1.2 million phones, data added. 
 
Quick growth in the regional operating system can be attributed to the target segment it addresses, that includes millions of people that do not know English and prefer using their local language not only to converse but also as in their smartphones. 
 
The OS has patented regional keyboards that support 12 languages and are capable of translating messages written in a local language to English with a left swipe and transliterating it by swiping right. It also has a local app called App Bazaar, allowing users to download apps in native languages, without requiring them to use email IDs or paying by credit cards. 
 
"Over 90% of the users have activated App Bazaar and 75% use it on a monthly basis," Deshmukh said, and added that the company was in advance stages of talks with two other handset brands to extend partnership for the local language based OS.

Apple’s woes in India: A timeline of the iPhone maker’s turbulent journey in the country

According to Dr Aloknath De, Chief Technology Officer of Samsung R&amp;D Institute, the Indian startup ecosystem has matured over the last few years - with many early stage companies working on Artificial Intelligence, IoT and cloud. “This will be a win-win for both as it will help startups scale their solutions through this deep engagement while we get an opportunity to enrich our offerings to our consumers,” said De. The global phone manufacturer had already been working with OS Labs to launch their new Galaxy Store. It runs Indus App Bazaar which helps in app discovery and improve download experience to consumers in 12 local Indian languages, apart from English. Bixby, which is Samsung’s voice assistant, competes with Amazon’s Alexa and Google Assistant. With its investment in Gnani, Samsung hopes to offer vernacular service through Bixby. Globally, Samsung has made investments totalling up to<a href="https://yourstory.com/2019/07/samsung-investment-85-million-indian-startups"> $2.2 billion</a> since 1999. The VC fund focuses on investing in future-oriented businesses that can work as growth engines. The fund looks at investing in areas like semiconductors, telecommunication, software, internet, bio engineering and medical industry. Samsung had also announced that it will invest $22 billion in the next three years in artificial intelligence (AI), 5G, automotive electronics components and biopharmaceuticals.
