Amid cross-border tensions, the fate of an Indo-Pak couple about to tie the knot now hangs in balance. 
 
Preparations for the wedding scheduled for November 7 have been completed. 
 Even as the date of the wedding is now approaching fast, the Indian embassy in <keyword id="3001" type="COUNTRY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Pakistan">Pakistan</keyword> has not granted visas to the bride's family and relatives, leaving both the families tensed. 
 Groom <keyword id="3728784" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Naresh-Tewani">Naresh Tewani</keyword> informed the media that despite having applied for visas in the prescribed time and format, no one from the bride's side had been issued the same so far. 
 
While the bride's family is running from pillar to post for visas by the Indian embassy, the groom has now taken to Twitter to send pleas to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and external affairs minister Sushma Swaraj for help. 
 
Naresh who hails from Jodhpur got engaged to Priya Bachchani of Karachi over two years back after their families met through a matrimony service. The service was being run by none other than Naresh's father Kanhaiya Lal Tewani himself. 
 
When both the sides agreed, Priya came with her family to Jodhpur for the engagement back in 2014 and it was decided that the wedding will take place after the bride’s father, who is a doctor in a government hospital in Pakistan, will retire. 
 
As he retired in August this year, the date of the marriage was fixed for November 7. 
 
Reportedly, the bride's family and relatives in Pakistan too have met local political leaders and public representatives from the community for help. But none of them have proved to be of any help so far. 
 
Meanwhile, Sushma Swaraj has responded to Naresh’s tweet reassuring help.

He believed that the prospect for Indo-Pak bilateral trade was of USD 10 billion. "With Pakistan treating China as its best friend and putting all eggs in one baskwhich is unfortunate, I don't see trade is going up" Zaidi said. He indicated that as US cutting aids since the last few years and China's aggressive investment plans in Pakistan, his country was moving close toward the dragon country. He said though official trade with India was about USD 2.1 billion, unofficial and via third country it was about USD four billion, Zaidi said. He said, now more Pakistani students were studying in China than in the US. He said Pakistan was expected to gain from the investments from China of worth USD 56 billion in infrastructure, but warned that prostrating before China under the guise of <keyword id="2904916" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="China-Pakistan-Economic-Corridor">China Pakistan Economic Corridor</keyword> (<keyword id="6363059" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="CPEC">CPEC</keyword>) might lead to potential debt problems. Indo-Pak trade ties affected by Chinese investments

The government on Wednesday said there has been no infiltration along the Sino-Indian border in the last six months, while 47 infiltration bids have been reported along the <keyword id="143023" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indo-Pak-border">Indo-Pak border</keyword> during the period. The Union Home Ministry also informed the Rajya Sabha that 594 attempts of infiltration into Jammu and Kashmir by Pakistani militants have been reported in the last three years, of which 312 were successful. "No infiltration has been reported along Indo-China border during last six months," Union Minister of State for Home Nityanad Rai said in a written response to a question. Replying a separate question, Union Minister of State for Home G Kishan Reddy said 582 terrorists were killed in Jammu and Kashmir by security forces in last three years, while 46 terrorists were arrested during the period. As many as 76 army personnel were also killed in Jammu and Kashmir from 2018 till September 8 this year, he said. The drones are on the agenda for a meeting between Indian and the US that is scheduled to take place soon. Though the meeting was formerly set for July, it has now been postponed to September. This is a result of the long-awaited policy, that Trump rolled out in April, aimed at expanding the exports of US-made arms to their allies. A major part of the policy allows lethal missile drones, and surveillance drones of all sizes, to be more widely available. This, Trump believes, might strengthen the American defense industry and create jobs in the country. The US drone manufacturers have lobbied hard for these changes since they have been facing growing competition, especially from Chinese and Israeli rivals, who often have lighter restrictions in their market. Some, however, believe that the “cost” of this deal might be too high as the US has been insisting that India sign a ‘prying’ communications framework - the Communications Compatibility and Security Agreement (<keyword id="4156075" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="COMCASA">COMCASA</keyword>) - as a condition for operating advanced defense systems. And the doubt comes up because many see this deal as a threat to the large amount of Russian equipment being used by the Indian military already and, in an extension, to Indo-Russian ties. This agreement with the US might also deter India’s Non-Alignment policy. However, after the US assured that the agreement would apply largely to US-procured weapons systems such as fighter planes and drones, India has agreed to move forward. Till last June, India has been in talks to buy 22 unarmed naval-variant surveillance aircrafts, <keyword id="4694855" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="MQ-9B-Guardian">MQ-9B Guardian</keyword>, worth more than ₹138.13 billion ($2 billion) to keep a watch over the Indian Ocean. However, India not only wants to keep an eye over a particular area but also wants to be able to hunt down targets over land and sea. The Indian military argued that even though the costs of acquisition were low, an unarmed drone would not serve the purpose and the cost and integration of a weapons system in the drone would still have been an issue. However, after the US’ amendment in April, India was offered armed drones which could fit its requirements. The deal has now been revised to not only include the armed version of the drone but also to change the number of aircrafts to be exported. If the deal is successful, it will be the first time that the US is selling an armed drone to a country not signed under NATO. It will also be the first high-tech unmanned aircraft in the Southeast Asian region surveying areas where Indo-Pak tensions are really high.

Markets turn nervous watching India and Pakistan ramp up military action

On August 16th, a day after India’s 71st Independence Day, Atal Bihari <keyword id="40921" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Vajpayee">Vajpayee</keyword>, the former Prime Minister, passed away in New Delhi at the age of 93. Vajpayee led the central government from 1998 to 2004, and till date is the only Indian Prime Minister from a party other than the Congress to complete a full term. The former <keyword id="14666" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="BJP">BJP</keyword> leader is set to be joined in this regard by current PM Narendra Modi, when the latter completes his term in May next year. Vajpayee has long been credited with moderating the BJP’s political position with his centrist <keyword id="35497" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="policies">policies</keyword> and socioeconomic reforms, thereby offering voters a viable national alternative to the Congress. A nine-time member of the Lok Sabha and two-time Rajya Sabha MP, he leaves a lasting legacy, and will be remembered for a slew of progressive and bold policies. Here are five of them:- Privatisation Vajpayee made privatisation a key component of his economic agenda when he set up the disinvestment ministry in 1999. Over the course of his tenure as PM, he oversaw the divestment of government holdings in more than 30 non-strategic public-sector companies such as VSNL, Maruti, Hindustan Zinc and Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd. What makes this policy all the more impressive is that Vajpayee had to overcome a considerable amount of opposition, not only from rival parties but from within his own Cabinet to implement it. Nuclearisation In May 1998, a month after his government came to power, Vajpayee ordered the commencement of five nuclear tests in Rajasthan’s Pokhran district. The move, which signalled India’s nuclear ambitions, drew the ire of Western powers, but it also highlighted India’s ability to defend itself from its neighbour Pakistan, which was building its own nuclear capability at the time. He always maintained that India would not use nuclear weapons first, stating that they would never be “weapons of aggression”. <keyword id="6354776" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Telecom">Telecom</keyword> Upon his death, Vajpayee was hailed as “the father of modern telecom in India” by leaders in the industry. Under his National Telecom policy, which was introduced in 1999, Vajpayee opened up the sector and implemented a number of structural reforms such as making mobile service providers offer services on a revenue share basis as opposed to a fixed-fee arrangement. This led to a reduction in call rates, a dramatic surge in mobile subscribers and encouraged competition among telecom operators. Roads and infrastructure While Vajpayee was prime minister, he launched a number of massive infrastructure projects to develop India’s roads and railway network. His government approved and funded the operations of the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation, which completed the first phase of the Delhi Metro in 2006. He also championed the Golden Quadrilateral scheme, a project to link all four of India’s major urban centers - Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai and Kolkata - by highways. Most importantly, though, was his Pradhanmantri Gramin Sadak Yojna scheme to improve road connectivity in India’s rural regions. <keyword id="45865" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indo-Pak">Indo-Pak</keyword> relations and Kargil Vajpayee made a number of steps to cement ties with Pakistan, such as the establishment of the Delhi-Lahore bus service in February 1999. Their meeting culminated in the signing of the Lahore Treaty, which outlined the country’s plans to steer clear of nuclear warfare. The goodwill was shortlived, however. A full-scale war took place in Kargil the following June. In July 2001, Vajpayee pushed for a peace summit with his new Pakistani counterpart, Pervez Musharraf in Agra. An agreement never materialised over the course of the summit, but not for his lack of trying.

Yousafzai, 17, has now become the youngest Nobel Prize winner. Earlier, this record was held by Australia-born British scientist Lawrence Bragg, who was 25 when he won the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1915. 
 
While making the announcement, Jagland said, “Children must go to school, not be financially exploited. In the poor countries of the world, 60% of the present population is under 25 years of age. It is a prerequisite for peaceful global development that the rights of children and young people be respected. In conflict-ridden areas in particular, the violation of children leads to the continuation of violence from generation to generation." 
 
Satyarthi has led several peaceful protests against exploitation of children for financial gains. He has also played an important role in developing important international conventions on children’s rights. After winning the award, Satyarthi said, "I am thankful to those who supported me." 
 
"The Nobel Committee regards it as an important point for a Hindu and a Muslim, an Indian and a Pakistani, to join in a common struggle for education and against extremism. Many other individuals and institutions in the international community have also contributed. It has been calculated that there are 168 million child labourers around the world today. In 2000, the figure was 78 million higher. The world has come closer to the goal of eliminating child labour," the committee said.

Indo-Pak Nationals Share Nobel Peace Prize Amid Tensions At Border

By Shakoor Rather New Delhi, Feb 6 () The recent locust outbreak along the India-Pakistan border may have been driven by the longer-than-usual monsoon rains across the region, and frequent cyclones in the Indian Ocean, scientists say. In India, the outbreak -- the biggest in 26 years -- began late last year in Gujarat and Rajasthan states, and recently Punjab was also affected. In Pakistan, the government declared national emergency last week to eliminate the attacking swarms of desert locusts, which were destroying crops on a large scale in the country's Punjab province. "The current locust outbreak is the biggest in 25 years in Ethiopia and Somalia, 26 years in India, 70 years in Kenya," Keith Cressman, locust forecasting officer at the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) told . "The outbreak started after heavy amounts of rains over east Africa and the Arabian Peninsula," Roxy Mathew Koll, a climate scientist at the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM) in Pune added. According to the FAO, locusts are the oldest migratory pests in the world. These insects differ from ordinary grasshoppers in their ability to change behaviour, and form swarms that can migrate over large distances. The most devastating of all locust species is the Desert Locust (Schistocerca gregaria), according to FAO. The locusts, which are considered to be among the most dangerous pests known to humanity, reproduce fast -- 20-fold within three months, the FAO experts noted. An adult locust can eat quantity equal to its weight daily, and just a single square kilometer of swarm can contain up to 80 million adults, they said. Koll noted the heavy rains which drove the locust outbreak occurred due to intense storm activity sourced from the Arabian Sea during the last two seasons. "Heavy rain triggers growth of vegetation in arid areas where desert locusts can then grow and breed," he said. Koll explained that recently climate change accentuated the phenomenon called the "Indian Ocean Dipole", with warmer than usual waters to its west, and cooler waters to its east. "On top of that, the rising temperatures due to global warming made the Western Indian Ocean particularly warm," he said. Cressman added that the current locust invasion in India by an unprecedented number of swarms originated in southern Iran from their breeding in spring last year. "Summer breeding along both sides of the Indo-Pakistan border was much higher than normal due to the swarm invasion and the monsoon rains lasting one month longer than normal, allowing up to three generations of breeding," Cressman said. The outbreak originated from two cyclones (May and Oct 2018) that allowed three generations of breeding - from June 2018 to March 2019 -- in the Arabian Peninsula, and caused an 8,000-fold increase in locust numbers, he added. According to Cressman, this was followed by further breeding after unusually heavy rains in Iran and Yemen, and finally another cyclone in the Horn of Africa in early December 2019. "Generally enhanced convection (cloud formation and rains) and cyclone activity follows the warm waters as they derive the energy and moisture from the ocean," Koll explained. As a result, he said, regions surrounding the warm western Indian Ocean -- such as East Africa, Arabian Peninsula and Indian subcontinent received a lot of rains during the last two seasons. "Along with that, the cyclone activity over the west Indian Ocean was also exceptional -- we saw the largest number, and the strongest cyclones this year -- releasing more rains. This might have triggered the locust outbreak," he said. India has not witnessed any full-blown locust cycles after 1962, however, they experts said, large-scale upsurges were observed during 1978 and 1993. Globally, Cressman said, the current generation of swarms formed shortly after last season's crops were harvested, but there has been considerable damage to pastures -- a primary livelihood in the Horn of Africa. "It is not only warm temperatures that favour locusts but also rainfall. The latter is not expected to occur is sufficient quantities until the start of the summer monsoon in Rajasthan which is usually in July, therefore, breeding now is not very likely in India," he said. "Climate models do show that the number and intensity of Indian Ocean Dipole events -- like the one we saw in 2019 -- are going to increase further in the future," Koll added. SAR VIS AKJ SARSAR
