The anticipated interest rate cuts in the US will further stimulate demand. Indian textile exports to remain strong amid global shifts; FTA negotiations with EU to offer growth opportunities

Despite unfavourable economic conditions in major markets such as the European Union (EU), the US, and West Asian nations, Indian <keyword id="21353395" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="textile-exports" source="keywords">textile exports</keyword> grew by 9.59 per cent compared to the previous year in May 2024, the Confederation of <keyword id="22064995" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-textile" source="keywords">Indian Textile</keyword> Industry (CITI) said in a report. Simultaneously, <keyword id="22064997" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-apparel-exports" source="keywords">Indian apparel exports</keyword> saw a growth of 9.84 per cent during the same period. The CITI in its report highlighted that the cumulative exports of textiles and apparel during May 2024 registered a growth of 9.70 per cent over May last year. The country's overall exports for May 2024 surged to USD 68.29 billion. This was a substantial year-on-year increase of 10.2 per cent, according to data released by the Commerce Ministry on June 14. The analysis noted that during Apr -May' 24, Indian textile exports registered a growth of 6.04 per cent over the previous year, while apparel exports registered a growth of 4.46 per cent during the same time period. The cumulative exports of textiles and apparel during April-May 2024 saw a surge of 5.34 per cent as compared to the same period last year. The recently released export data revealed that sectors such as electronic goods, drugs and pharmaceuticals, organic and inorganic chemicals, engineering goods, petroleum products, plastics &amp; linoleum, cotton yarn/fabs made-ups ( textiles manufactured), handloom products, etc., man-made yarn/fabs./made-ups, handloom products etc. performed well in the exports from the country. Other merchandise products, such as meat, dairy and poultry products, mica, coal and other ores, minerals including processed minerals, RMG of all textiles, tea, coffee, rice, tobacco, carpet and handicrafts, oil seeds; and fruits and vegetables, did well too. On Friday, AshwKumar, President of the Federation of Indian Export Organisations (FIEO), highlighted that a positive trajectory was seen in May 2024, driven by robust order bookings. Among the top ten export markets for India were the US, UAE, Netherlands, UK, China, Singapore, Saudi Arabia, Bangladesh, Germany and France. Considerably, in these markets, the exports registered a double-digit growth rate. Breaking down export data released yesterday, the merchandise exports witnessed a 9.1 per cent rise to USD 38.13 billion, while service exports climbed by 11.7 per cent, reaching USD 30.16 billion. Indian textile exports surge by 9.59% in May despite global economic challenges

A sixth-grade social science textbook that I read described India as a piece of fabric, with countless threads coloured in a myriad of majestic shades, woven together. This metaphor holds exceptionally well when put into the context of our <keyword id="22706215" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="handloom-industry" source="keywords">handloom industry</keyword>. India has a rich history of handlooms and weaving cultures. The culture of handlooms is so intricately woven into Indian culture, that there are whole towns dedicated to the same: <keyword id="248532" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Chanderi" source="Orion">Chanderi</keyword> in Madhya Pradesh to Pochampally in Telangana and a dozen more! Unfortunately, the handloom industry in India is dying. The struggle is multi-faceted, ranging from a declining workforce to fierce competition from <keyword id="20496028" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="power-looms" source="keywords">power looms</keyword>. Hence, five years ago, August 7 was proclaimed <keyword id="22677698" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="National-Handloom-Day" source="keywords">National Handloom Day</keyword> in response to this crisis and to heighten public awareness. This date holds special historical significance, commemorating the initiation of the Swadeshi Movement in 1905—a pivotal act of defiance against British colonial rule. <h2>When did this industry come into existence?</h2>According to archaeological findings, the origins of handloom in the Indian subcontinent may be traced back to the Indus Valley Civilization. The Mughal Empire was known to support and patronise <keyword id="20258864" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="weavers" source="keywords">weavers</keyword>. The support from the royal patrons resulted in the invention of new textiles such as ‘Mulmul’ and ‘Banarasi Brocade’ among others. This era witnessed a heightened worldwide demand for Indian textiles. In the 17th century, India produced 25% of the world’s textiles, with Bengal accounting for more than 50% of textiles and 80% of silks imported by the Dutch from Asia. <h2>What led to the decline of the <keyword id="19934660" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="Indian-handloom" source="keywords">Indian handloom</keyword>?</h2>The East India Company's entry fuelled the industry's initial decline, which started in the 1830s. The weavers were obliged to sell only to the British, and that too at exceedingly cheap prices, virtually putting them out of business. On the other hand, Indian cloth was taxed excessively to promote machine-made British clothing. The Industrial Revolution in Britain strengthened their indigenous textile industry, giving rise to new markets for cheaper textiles. In India, the collapse of the Mughal aristocracies meant no access to royal patronage. As a result, textiles like Khadi and muslin had little demand in the market. Circling back to the present, the industry is facing both similar and new challenges. Fabrics made on power looms are cheaper and faster to produce, in comparison to handloom fabrics. The industry is largely unorganised, and the wages are shockingly low. 67% of <keyword id="22706216" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="handloom-workers" source="keywords">handloom workers</keyword> are earning less than the minimum wage every month. Faced with economic challenges, the older artisans are thus forced to encourage the newer generation to choose an alternative career path. This migration of the workforce from a traditional sector is evident from the fall in the number of weavers less than 35 years of age- from 26.13 lakh in 2009-10 to 16.07 lakh in 2019-20. The majority of weavers do not have access to banking facilities, let alone institutional credit. Furthermore, if one manages to accumulate credit, there is a mismatch between the supply and demand forces due to the lack of awareness about handwoven textiles in the current generation. <h2>Initiatives for revival</h2>The cultural significance of the Indian handloom isn’t just limited to its beauty and extravagance, but it extends to our independence struggle as well. The Swadeshi movement immortalised the charkha and advocated for the use of indigenous goods. Following independence, the Indian government took many measures to revive the handloom industry. In 1953, India’s Parliament approved the Khadi and Other Handloom Industries Development Act. In 1955, the All India Handloom Fabrics Marketing Cooperative Society was formed to promote the sale of fabrics produced by handloom cooperatives across India. The National Handloom Development Programme (NHDP) aimed to provide financial assistance for marketing and production. The Handloom Weavers’ Comprehensive Welfare Scheme offers health and life insurance to weavers, to ensure social security. The organisation commenced a fortnight-long exhibition, “VIRAASAT” dedicated to celebrating the 10th National Handloom Day began at Handloom Haat in Janpath, New Delhi on Saturday, 3rd August 2024, and will conclude on 16th August 2024. The Handloom Mark scheme was introduced to authenticate handloom products, thus enabling weavers to gain better market access and ensuring that consumers get genuine products. Moreover, the India Trade Portal also mentions that the GOI plans to provide financial assistance of Rs. 30 crore to at least 10,000 handlooms. Various state governments also regularly conduct handloom expos and fairs, providing platforms for weavers to showcase and sell their products directly to consumers. <h2>Contemporary Brands and their love for Indian handloom</h2>Modern, popular designers such as <keyword id="8264" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sabyasachi" source="Orion">Sabyasachi</keyword> and <keyword id="21493890" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ritu-kumar" source="keywords">Ritu Kumar</keyword> are known to work closely with weavers and have been doing their part by bringing worldwide attention to the handloom industries. Recently, <keyword id="1472101" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ajrakh" source="Orion">Ajrakh</keyword> was brought into the limelight when Alia Bhatt wore a custom Abu Jani Sandeep Khosla Ajrakh saree to Joy Awards in Riyadh. However, it’s not just the fashion moguls who are working towards the revival of this industry. Contemporary indie brands are partnering with local weavers, and creating awareness about their work. The emergence of such indie brands and their association with local artisans is beneficial for both entities. For instance, Joskai Studio derives its name from ‘Joskai’, a woven piece of cloth worn as a part of the traditional costume of the Tiwa community of Assam. They work with artisans in northeast India, specifically from the weaving village of Saualkuchi in Assam. Rouka by Sreejith Jeevan is a Kerala-based brand that works strictly with weavers from Kerala, specifically Chendamangalam and Kuthampally. <h2>Employment and Exports</h2>According to the Indian Trade Portal, the Indian handloom sector is the country’s second-largest employer after agriculture in rural areas. The Handloom Census 2019-20 mentions that the industry employs about 35,22,512 workers across the country, with women forming 77.29% of the workforce. India is the second largest exporter of handloom products in the world, with exports valued at $ 353.9 million in 2017- 18, as per EXIM bank's working papers. The major handloom export centres are Karur, Panipat, Varanasi and Kannur where handloom products like bed linen, table linen, toilet linen, floor coverings, and embroidered textile materials and curtains etc. are produced for export markets. During April 2021-February 2022, India exported handloom products worth 1693 crore, as per Indian Trade Portal. Indian silk scarves also form a sizable chunk of total handloom exports, in addition to home textiles like carpets, rugs and mats, which constitute over 13.6% of India’s total handloom exports. <h2>The Path Forward</h2>The mere existence of organisations and allocation of funds isn’t enough to sustain the legacy of India’s rich handloom industry. Big corporations working with local weavers ensure employment but don't protect them from exploitation and meagre wages, leaving them vulnerable. The people in power ought to come up with strategies that ensure the trickle-down effect of the schemes and funds. The new generation of buyers has a greater purchasing power than the one before them. Marketing focused on bringing Indian handloom practices into the limelight can do wonders in this case.

Fabric of a nation: Sustaining India's handloom legacy in modern times

<ul><li>Most clothing <keyword id="44446" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="retailers" source="Orion">retailers</keyword> say that this wedding season saw no growth in sales, while many reported a drop. </li><li>Most of them blame the economic slowdown, while others attribute it to high prices, and fewer auspicious dates. </li><li><keyword id="222658" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="retailers-association" source="Orion">Retailers Association</keyword> of India too says that sales across categories has moderated, due to the high base effect in the previous year that saw extraordinary growth. </li></ul>The economic slowdown seems to be taking a toll on one of India’s most vibrant spending seasons — that of the big fat Indian weddings. This year, 83% of respondents of a survey by Clothing Manufacturers Association of India (CMAI) said there has been absolutely ‘no growth’ as compared to the wedding season of 2022. Also, 40% of them said that there has been a drop in sales to the tune of 10-25% over the previous year. The wedding season generally runs from April to June. Indian brides seem to be going austere as a large majority of clothing retailers said that the economically priced products fared better than the more expensive varieties. “Lighter embroideries and pastel colours were more in demand as per the survey results,” says CMAI. “Currently the market is seeing a fairly significant slowdown, which has been caused by the overall inflationary conditions in the market. The first quarter of the current financial year is likely to be disappointing for the industry, and the impact is being felt by both the value as well as the upper segments of consumers,” said Rajesh Masand, president of CMAI. More than 60% of the respondents attributed the weak performance to the general economic slowdown. While 14% of them attributed it to high prices, 13% believe that the fewer number of auspicious dates as compared to the previous season contributed to the drop. The high base effect A survey by Retailers Association of India (RAI) said that retailers across categories saw a modest growth of 7% in the month of May compared with last year. Jewellery and apparel showed moderate growth at 9%. “As consumers are now getting into their normal business routines, we are witnessing moderate growth over previous year. However, we are also aware that April and May months in 2022 witnessed extraordinary growth at 23% and 24%, respectively, compared to pre-pandemic periods (April 2019 and May 2019),” said Kumar Rajagopalan, chief executive officer, RAI. The apparel industry has been growing at a fairly consistent rate of 8-10% per annum, said CMAI. The industry saw a revival in 2022 as consumers went back to the physical stores and markets – and 2022-23 is estimated to have seen growth of 15-20%. “However, with the costs of raw materials as well as overall cost of production having gone up substantially, this growth has been entirely price-led, and the volumes would still be below the previous year by 3-5%,” said CMAI. Women go West, men go Indian The apparel sector is also seeing a shift in trends due to higher urbanisation of India. “Exposure to western culture with accessibility to content over social media platforms is influencing the dressing patterns and fashion sense amongst the youth, which is causing a gradual shift from traditional clothing to western clothing, especially in the women’s wear segment,” Rahul Mehta, chief mentor at CMAI. Mehta, however, added that the men’s wear segment is seeing some sort of a ‘return to tradition’ — as more men are seeking to go traditional during festivals and weddings. The share price of companies in the sector — Go Fashion, Raymond and Vedant Fashions, which owns the Manyavar brand – have come off their monthly highs. Vedant fell 6% as compared to last week. Shares of Go Fashion – which is into premium leggings and such apparel — remained flat this week, as did the shares of premium clothing brand Raymond. Indian brides go austere with lower priced, light-embroidery trousseaus this season

Dhaka: <keyword id="19919639" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="bangladesh" source="keywords">Bangladesh</keyword>'s garment industry, a vital economic pillar, is facing a severe crisis due to a volatile mix of <keyword id="20444027" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="political-unrest" source="keywords">political unrest</keyword>, including violent protests, and catastrophic flooding, threatening to unravel years of rapid growth and global prominence. The textile and garment industry, which accounts for over 80 per cent of Bangladesh's total export earnings and contributes approximately 11 per cent to the nation's GDP, has been hit hard. This industry contributes significantly to export earnings and employs millions. Following the unprecedented anti-government protests, which reached a crescendo on August 5, Sheikh Hasina resigned as prime minister and fled the country. She landed in India on August 5 and is currently staying there. The two-month-long anti-quota protests have led to widespread demonstrations, curfews, and violence. This unrest has not only disrupted factory operations but has also caused significant economic losses. Factories were forced to close, and with the peak season for Christmas shipments and the booking of next season's orders upon us, the timing of the unrest has exacerbated the crisis. The Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (<keyword id="22930680" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="BGMEA" source="keywords">BGMEA</keyword>) recently has reported substantial financial losses, estimating a shortfall of Tk 6,400 crore (approx Rs 4,500 crore) due to the shutdowns and communication breakdowns. Khandoker Rafiqul Islam, the newly elected president of the BGMEA, mentioned that the goal of reaching nearly USD 45 billion in exports this year may not be achieved. He attributed this to disruptions in both export activities and production. "I think this is a temporary crisis and we will tide over it. The exact magnitude of the losses will be known later, but yes, there has been an impact," he told PTI. Echoing similar sentiments, former cabinet minister and president of BGMEA, Gholam Sarwar Milon, said the garment industry has been badly hit by both the political unrest and the floods, as both production and the supply chain of raw materials have been severely affected. "The crisis in the garment industry is unprecedented. Production is nearly 15-20 per cent less than the corresponding period last year. Several orders have dried up as investors and order suppliers are wary about investing. Several small factories have either closed down or are working on sub-contracts for big factories," he told PTI. According to BGMEA sources, out of 3,000 major and small garment factories in Bangladesh, nearly 800-900 have closed since last year. "The big factories have survived, but the small and medium factories have borne the brunt. If the situation persists, it will worsen further," he said. Milon suggested that the garment industry needs to diversify into making jute bags and other high-end clothing and also look for new markets. The Bangladesh Textile Mills Association has projected losses of around USD 58 million. The impact on the industry is compounded by the recent flooding, which has further disrupted logistics and exacerbated the economic fallout. Bangladesh's main port, Chattogram, through which more than 90 per cent of the country's international trade transits, has become a focal point of the chaos. The port's operations were paralysed during the political unrest, leading to significant delays in shipments. Factories have struggled to maintain production schedules, and backlogs at ports and airports have stretched to a month in some cases. To mitigate the damage, factories have turned to air freight and extended working hours, but these measures have not fully alleviated the delays. The president of the Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BKMEA), Mohammad Hatem, said orders are down by 15-20 per cent. "The industry has incurred huge losses in the last few months. In 2014, during political unrest, we suffered a similar situation. It then took us three years to return to the previous state. We hope to tide over the situation soon as Chief Advisor <keyword id="20024384" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="muhammad-yunus" source="keywords">Muhammad Yunus</keyword> is taking several steps to restore normalcy," he told PTI. Hatem feels that if the situation is not overcome soon, there is a growing perception that foreign investors might look at new markets in other South Asian nations. "However, other South Asian markets don't have the infrastructure like Bangladesh, which has such huge production capacity," he said. The garment industry's workforce, which employs over 4 million people directly and nearly 15 million indirectly, with a significant proportion of women, faces mounting uncertainty. The sector's remarkable growth over the past two decades-from USD 5 billion in exports in 2001 to nearly USD 40 billion in 2023-now stands at risk. The floods have compounded the challenges, causing damage to infrastructure and further complicating logistics. Monsoon rainfall-triggered floods in deltaic Bangladesh and upstream Indian regions have killed several people and marooned or affected nearly 3 million others in Bangladesh, posing a huge administrative challenge to the newly installed interim government amid a political transition. "Due to the floods, the supply chain has been badly affected. We reached a high in 2023-24 where our garment exports touched around USD 46 billion. This time it is likely to be much less," said former army major and owner of a woollen garment factory, Mahfuzur Rehman. The sector's growth from a small-scale operation in the early 1980s to becoming the world's second-largest apparel exporter, after China, underscores its strength. In the financial year 2009, Bangladesh's apparel exports were valued at USD 12 billion. By the financial year 2023-24, this figure had surged to over USD 46 billion, reflecting the industry's capacity for recovery and growth even amid adversity. In response to the crisis, the interim government, now led by Nobel Peace Prize-winning economist Muhammad Yunus, has prioritised restoring order and stability. According to garment industry insiders, the path to recovery is fraught with challenges as the political instability has undermined investor confidence, and the recent flooding has further strained the already fragile infrastructure. "The sector's resilience will be tested as it attempts to regain its footing and restore its reputation as a reliable global supplier," a garment industry owner, who did not wish to be named, said. He added that despite the current crisis, Bangladesh's textile and garment industry has shown great strength and the ability to recover in the past.

The manufacturing and construction sector nearly doubled, while other sectors also reported growth. The manufacturing sector has achieved an average annual growth rate of 5.2% in the last decade. Chemicals, wood products and furniture, transport equipment, pharmaceuticals, machinery, and equipment have emerged as the key drivers of the sector. From an importer, India has emerged as a net exporter of finished steel products in the last decade and the industry has achieved its best-ever numbers in FY24. Another area where imports have been reigned is coal. Coal production in India has rapidly grown over the last five years, reducing import dependence. In FY24, India produced 997.2 million tonnes of coal, imported 261 million tonnes, and consumed 1233.86 million tonnes. The export of textiles and apparel increased by 1% in FY24, reaching ₹2.97 lakh crore. The electronics industry, a key sector has reported good growth in the last decade. While the domestic production of electronic items increased to ₹8.22 lakh crore, the exports increased to ₹1.9 lakh crore. Patents are a key part of an industry’s growth as they show an investment in research and development. The number of granted patents increased seventeen-fold from 5,978 in 2014-15 to 1,03,057 in 2023-24. Economic Survey 2024 – industries grow by 9.5%, fueling economic growth to 8.2%

Billionaire <keyword id="19916798" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Mukesh-Ambani" source="keywords">Mukesh Ambani</keyword>'s Reliance Industries and <keyword id="19924335" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Tata-Group" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Tata Group" meta.hostid="153" meta.entityid="Tata Group">Tata Group</keyword> have made it to the prestigious TIME's list of 100 World's Most Influential Companies of 2024. TIME called Reliance 'India's Juggernaut'. This is the second time that Reliance has found its way into the TIME list. Jio Platforms, the firm that holds digital properties of the conglomerate, was included in the inaugural TIME 100 Most Influential Companies List of 2021. Serum Institute is the other Indian company on the list. TIME listed Reliance in the 'Titans' category (one of the five categories under which the companies were divided, other being Leaders, Disrupters, Innovators, and Pioneers). Tata was listed in 'Titan's' category while Serum under 'Pioneers'. "Reliance Industries was founded as a textile and polyester company 58 years ago by Dhirubhai Ambani. Today the sprawling conglomerate -- which has aligned its growth with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision for a 'self-reliant' India -- is the country's most valuable company, with a market capitalisation of more than USD 200 billion," TIME said. Now led by Dhirubhai's son Mukesh, the Mumbai-based company has ventures in energy, retail, and telecommunications, among others, and has made its chairman Asia's richest man, it said. The publication went on to stated that in February, Reliance came out on top in a fiercely competitive race to dominate India's burgeoning streaming market by striking a USD 8.5 billion merger deal with Disney's India business. "The deal will bring together more than 100 television channels and give the combined group around a 31 per cent share of India's streaming market compared to rivals Netflix and Amazon Prime with 8 per cent each," according to analytics firm Comscore. Reliance has revolutionised several economic sectors in the world's most populous country by making world-class products and services available at affordable prices with multiple innovations. Under Mukesh Ambani, the firm's telecom arm Jio revolutionised India's digital landscape and drove digital inclusion on an unprecedented scale with the most affordable mobile data tariffs in the world. It set up the world's largest single location refining complex. Reliance Retail is ranked among the top 100 retailers globally and in FY24 it registered 1.06 billion footfalls across its 18,800+ stores (67 per cent of which are in small towns and villages). Reliance is investing USD 10 billion in building the most comprehensive ecosystem for new energy and new materials in India and has set an ambitious goal to reach net-zero carbon by 2035. TIME described Serum as the world's biggest vaccine maker, churning out billions of vaccines. The company makes 3.5 billion doses every year, including for measles, polio, and most recently, HPV. "Serum's CEO Adar Poonawalla says the company's success can largely be chalked up to its private ownership. Not being beholden to shareholders allows it to keep vaccine prices low (the R21 will cost USD 4 a shot)," the publication said. Tata Group, it said, was founded in 1868 and has a vast portfolio extending from steel, software, watches, subsea cables, and chemicals, to salt, grains, air-conditioners, fashion, and hotels. "But as rivals have aggressively courted new businesses, it struggled to keep up with stiff competition. In 2017, after over a century of family management, N Chandrasekaran took over as chairman despite having no personal ties to the family -- highly unusual when India's business landscape is ruled by family succession plans," TIME said. As chair, he has transformed the group by investing in tech manufacturing, AI, and semiconductor chips. In 2023, it became the first Indian company to assemble iPhones, and is building another plant, it said, adding that in September, Tata announced a partnership with Nvidia to develop an AI cloud in India. "And this year, it announced plans for the country's first major semiconductor manufacturing facility. The moves seem to be paying off: in February, Tata's combined market capitalisation reached a whopping USD 365 billion, more than the entire economy of India's neighbour and rival, Pakistan," it added. Reliance, Tata on TIME's list of world's most influential companies

These are the highlights of the PM Mitra Yojana, as revealed in the cabinet briefing on Oct 6: According to Goyal, the scheme is divided into two parts – development capital support and competitive incentive support. Under the development capital support option, the government will offer to pour in 30% of the total project cost, which is estimated to be around ₹1,700 crore per park. This brings the government’s contribution to ₹500 crore per park. Goyal further clarified that greenfield parks will get ₹500 crore support, while brownfield parks will get ₹200 crore only. Greenfield parks refer to those which will be built up from scratch. The term brownfield refers to the expansion or improvement of existing projects. The second option is competitive incentive support, which aims to provide support to those firms which are the first-movers in these textile parks. This scheme is first-come first-serve for the firms which want to reap the benefits will have to approach the government or the textile park. Each unit will have to employ a minimum of 100 people to be eligible. Eligible units will get an incentive of ₹10 crore per annum for the first three years. India’s plan for new textile parks includes a ₹10 crore incentive each year for units with 100 employees

New Delhi [India], November 13 (ANI): <keyword id="178886" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="indian-manufacturing" source="Orion">Indian manufacturing</keyword> has accelerated through the second quarter of 2023-24 and is likely to continue for the subsequent quarters of the financial year 2023-24, notwithstanding the slowdown in developed nations, industry body <keyword id="19481819" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ficcis-latest-quarterly" source="Orion">FICCI's latest quarterly</keyword> survey revealed. The industry body's latest quarterly survey assessed the performance and sentiments of manufacturers for the July-September 2023-24 quarter for ten major sectors -- automotive and auto components, capital goods and construction equipment, cement, chemicals fertilizers and pharmaceuticals, electronics and white goods, machine tools, metal and metal products, textiles, apparels and technical textiles, paper, and miscellaneous. It sought responses from over 380 manufacturing units from both the large and SME segments with a combined annual turnover of over Rs 4.88 lakh crores. The existing average capacity utilization in the Indian manufacturing sector is around 74 per cent, slightly higher than the 73 per cent recorded during the previous quarters. The future <keyword id="628648" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="investment-outlook" source="Orion">investment outlook</keyword> has also improved as compared to the previous quarter as over 57 per cent of respondents reported plans for investments and expansions in the coming six months. This is also a slight improvement over the previous survey. In terms of major constraints, demand is a limiting factor to realise the true potential of the manufacturing sector in India, with over 40 per cent of respondents highlighting this as a significant constraint. "Whether it is domestic demand or exports, this remains a major limiting factor. Some other constraints, though not major ones are high raw material prices, increased cost of finance, logistics, and other supply chain disruptions are some of the major constraints which are affecting expansion plans of the respondents," finds the FICCI survey. The table below gives the average capacity utilization for various sub-sectors of manufacturing: On the export front, performance seems to be better than in previous quarters as over 48 per cent of the respondents reported higher exports in July-September 2023-24 as compared to 33 per cent in Q1 2023-24. "However, further improvement in export demand is required in the light of the country's growth aspiration," FICCI said. Further, the hiring outlook, according to the survey, looks stable with around 38 per cent of the respondents looking at hiring additional workforce in the next three months. "Most sectors have sufficient labour force engaged in their operations and are not facing a shortage of labour at factories. While 82 per cent of our respondents mentioned that they do not have any issues with workforce availability, the remaining 18 per cent feel that there is still a lack of skilled workforce available in their sector," FICCI noted. Indian manufacturing sector growth expected to continue: FICCI survey

Mumbai, Feb 1 () The textile industry on Saturday said the Budget proposal to offer a scheme for remission of duties and taxes on exports will improve their competitiveness in global markets.
"The budget proposal to launch a scheme for remission of duties and taxes on exported goods to refund the duties and taxes levied at the Central, state and local levels, like electricity duties and VAT on fuel used for transportation that are currently not getting exempted or refunded," Texprocil chairman KV Srinivasan said.
The budget has abolished the anti-dumping duty on PTA (purified terephthalic acid) is an important decision as it is a critical input for the textile fibres and yarns, and removal of anti dumping duty will make its availability to the industry at competitive prices and give a boost to downstream value added product, he noted.
On technical textiles, Srinivasan said, "the proposed National Technical Textiles Mission with a four-year implementation period from FY21 to FY24 at an estimated outlay of Rs 1,480 crore, will give the much needed encouragement to this sector and provide breakthrough in product development".
Garware Technical Fibres' Shujaul Rehman said the National Technical Textile Mission can boost the industry by way increased exports.
Confederation of Indian Textile Industry Chairman T Rajkumar welcomed the abolition of anti-dumping duty on PTA, which is a basic raw material of the MMF (man-made fibre) segment.
He pointed out that if the domestic textile industry has to become USD 350 billion by 2025, it couldn't have been done by without making our raw material available at an internationally competitive price.
"The above decision is a very welcome step in the right direction as it will help the downstream textile value chain to strengthen its position in the textile world map," he added.
On the fund allocations for the textile sector for 2020-21, Rajkumar said this year, the government has given special emphasis on infrastructure, research, capacity building and A-TUFS by enhancing allocations by 98.1 per cent, 79.8 per cent and 54.1 per cent, respectively over last year. The textile hub of Tamil Nadu is affected as well as nearly 300 spinning mills have shut down. Across the country, as many as 605 have shut operations, according to M Jayabal, president of TN Open-end Spinning Mills Association (OSMA). Expectedly,120,000 turned jobless in the last one year. Taxes and interest rates According to the NITMA, there has been a decline in cotton yarn exports as well. The export fell by 34.6% at $696 million in the quarter ending in June, as per Directorate General of Commercial Intelligence and Statistics (DGCI&amp;S). This slowdown could reach the farms as well. In fact, the cotton association doubts if the 40 million bales of cotton may not even find buyers in India or overseas. And they blame taxes for that.
