New Delhi, Jan 15 () Pizza Hut International, a division of US-based Yum! Brands Inc on Wednesday said it has appointed Merrill Pereyra as managing director of the Indian Subcontinent.
 In his new role, Pereyra will be responsible for leading Pizza Hut into the next phase of long-term profitable growth across Indian Subcontinent, the company said in a statement.
 He will oversee the growth and expansion of the brand's footprint across the subcontinent countries based out of the headquarters in Gurgaon, it added.
 "Pereyra brings with him over three decades of rich experience and leadership in the (Quick service restaurants) QSR sector. With his unique brand of leadership and compelling experience, we are confident he will strengthen our brand further in the region," Pizza Hut Asia Pacific Managing Director Unnat Varma said.
 With Merrill at the helm, Pizza Hut Indian Subcontinent plans to open over 100 new stores across the market in 2020.
 Pizza Hut has been in India for more than two decades. Currently, the brand has 547 stores in the Indian subcontinent of which 460 are located in India.
 The company also runs 81 fast casual dining (FCD) stores in the the country and aims to increase the share of such stores to 40 per cent of its real estate by 2022.
 Prior to his current role Pereyra led QSR Brands (M) Holdings, part of CVC Capital Partners, EPF and Johor Corporation which dominates Malaysia's rapidly expanding retail food industry as the executive director and CEO.
 He has also provided exciting, energetic and innovative leadership to large QSR brands including McDonald's Corporation, KFC and Pizza Hut Singapore, among others. MSS SHW

Hence the Emirates' decision this June to shift one of its four daily flights operating out of JFK International Airport in New York across the Hudson River to Newark, New Jersey. Fortunately, New Jersey doesn't have a shortage of people that need to fly into and out of India and its neighboring countries. According to the <a href="https://www.nj.gov/labor/lpa/pub/lmv/lmv_18.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">2010 census</a>, New Jersey's Indian population grew 72.7% between 2000 and 2010. As a result, 40% of all New Jersey's entire Asian population come from India. The state also boasts large populations from Pakistan and Bangladesh. Emirates is well aware of this. "The region around Edison, New Jersey has the highest concentration of individuals originating from the Indian subcontinent in the US," Schmid said. Emirates also believes its rivals have grossly underserved the market."You have two carriers that operate directly into India, but that's really pretty much it," Schmid said. As a result, Emirates expects to be able to cultivate new business from its New Jersey flights without cannibalizing the company's existing JFK traffic. However, it should be noted that the other two airlines, United and Air India, fly non-stop from Newark to cities in India while Emirates requires a stopover in Dubai. Trouble for India The shrinking of the world’s ‘<a href="https://www.thethirdpole.net/en/about/">Third Pole</a>’ has immediate consequences of India. Temperatures in the region have increased by 1.5 degrees Celsius, as compared to pre-industrialisation levels, causing the glaciers to not only shrink by 250 meters but also lose 60% of their mass. More than 500 small glaciers in the area have also disappeared altogether. The glaciers are also the source of 10 of Asia’s largest rivers – including the Ganges, Brahmaputra and the Indus. Their melting has huge implications for these rivers, and could affect the livelihood of over 1.3 billion people. The most immediate effect will be on farmers, who depend on the melting waters of the glacier for the irrigation of water-intensive crops. In fact, rice, wheat and sugarcane account for 90% of India’s crop production are the <a href="https://www.oav.de/fileadmin/user_upload/5_Publikationen/5_Studien/170118_Study_Water_Agriculture_India.pdf">most water consuming</a> crops in India’s agricultural scene. The problem isn’t that excessive water will flood the fields and destroy crops. These rivers are already picketted with dams and irrigation canals that can handle the excess water. The issue is that <a href="https://www.orfonline.org/expert-speak/if-80-water-consumption-in-india-is-for-agriculture-why-is-it-unregulated-and-inefficient/">India’s agricultural water requirements</a> are barely being met, despite the immoderate water supply. So once this water runs out, the river basins will exclusively depend on <a href="https://arxiv.org/ftp/arxiv/papers/1306/1306.2709.pdf">monsoon rains</a> to replenish themselves. The underwater aquifers that are in place within agricultural regions are already struggling with their water tables. The use of water is so extensive in these regions that water is being used faster than it can be replaced. The fall in food production will, in turn, hurt India’s food security. The Ganges river basin, the largest in India, provides water to West Bengal and Uttar Pradesh, the largest rice-producing states in the country. This isn’t good for a country whose population largely depends on rice as their staple diet. Even the production of wheat, sugarcane, jute and basic vegetables is threatened, as the primary regions where they are produced overlap with the affected river basins. Tea plantations in the northeast Indian state of Assam will also be affected, as the <keyword id="179908" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Brahmaputra-river">Brahmaputra river</keyword> irrigates them. The effects transcend India. The Third Pole expands over the Himalaya-Hindu Kush mountain range and the <keyword id="74610" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Tibetan-plateau">Tibetan Plateau</keyword>, spelling bad news of India’s neighbours as well. Even, Pakistan needs to be on its toes, since 60% of the country depends on the <keyword id="162118" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indus-River">Indus river</keyword> for its irrigation requirements.

A glacier in China is melting at an unprecedented rate — but it is India that may end up paying the price

New Delhi, Dec 5 () Global trade enabler DP World on Thursday said it has acquired marine logistics provider Feedertech Group.
 The transaction is expected to close in the first quarter of 2020.
 "Unifeeder, a 100 per cent owned subsidiary of DP World PLC, announces the acquisition of a 77 per cent stake in Feedertech Group," the company said in a statement.
 Feedertech founder Ali Maghami will retain the remaining 23 per cent shareholding and remain involved in the business.
 The statement said that established in 2003 and based in Singapore, Feedertech operates two businesses, Feedertech, which is an independent feedering service, and Perma, a regional short-sea network. Both operate in the same market and connect the fast-growing trade route of Asia-Middle-East via the Indian Subcontinent.
 "Similar to Unifeeder, Feedertech operates as an asset-light, independent common-user platform that focuses on flexibility and reliability. The group generates annual revenues of over USD 100 million from a diversified customer mix, calls at 50 ports and transports over 600,000 TEU (twenty-foot equivalent unit) annually," the statement said.
 DP World Group Chairman and CEO Sultan Ahmed Bin Sulayem said, This transaction is another strategic step in our vision to build end-to-end logistics capability...it offers us exposure to the faster-growing coastal short-sea trade in the Indian subcontinent, which is highly complementary to our existing India logistics strategy."
 He said the next and imminent stage of this development will be to launch a dedicated efficient India-Gulf region service.

Farooqi, who hails from Pakistan's Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, is the mastermind behind the deadly terror attack on a prominent gurudwara in Kabul in March that killed 25 Sikhs. He is not blacklisted by the UN Security Council's 1267 al-Qaeda Sanctions Committee. Similarly, Haq is also a Pakistani national and has not been blacklisted yet. Al-Qaida in the Indian Subcontinent (AQIS) operates under the Taliban umbrella from Afghanistan's Nimruz, Helmand and Kandahar provinces and its current leader is Pakistan-born Osama Mahmood, who is also "not listed" under the UNSC sanctions. Mahmood succeeded <keyword id="2502994" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Asim-Umar">Asim Umar</keyword>. The report said that the group reportedly has between 150 and 200 members from Bangladesh, India, <keyword id="6356970" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="myanmar">Myanmar</keyword> and Pakistan and "is reportedly planning retaliation operations in the region to avenge the death of its former leader." The Sanctions Monitoring Team report said that the "large terrorist group present in Afghanistan" Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) is led by Amir Noor Wali Mehsud. Pakistan-born Mehsud was designated a global terrorist by the UNSC sanctions committee only this month, more than two years after he was named the TTP leader, following the death of former TTP head Maulana Fazlullah. Mehsud is supported by his deputy Qari Amjad and TTP spokesperson Mohammad Khorasani, both not listed under the UNSC sanctions. This demonstrates that the Pakistani nationals operate at leadership levels in the terror organisations and point to the terror groups' Pakistani links. Pizza Hut plans to considerably increase its footprint in India in the next five years with a focus on Tier II & III cities

New Delhi, Domestic stalwart <keyword id="89370" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Amol-Muzumdar" source="Orion">Amol Muzumdar</keyword> is set to become the Indian women's <keyword id="5410761" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="cricket-head-coach" source="Orion">cricket head coach</keyword> after impressing the Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) the most during the interviews of the short-listed candidates in Mumbai on Monday. The CAC comprising Ashok Malhotra, Jatin Paranjpe and Sulakshana Naik found Muzumdar's 90-minute presentation most impressive. The others who were interviewed were former Durham coach Jon Lewis and Tushar Arothe, who had already served as India head coach before resigning in 2018. The development comes days before the commencement of India's tour of Bangladesh. India were without a head coach since December last year when Ramesh Powar was sacked. "The CAC was most impressed with Amol's presentation who was very clear in his plans for the women's team. The other presentations were good too but his was by far the best. He will most likely be recommended for the job," a BCCI official told PTI. Muzumdar, who was most recently the head coach of Mumbai Ranji side and has had stints with IPL franchise Rajasthan Royals and South African national team, was the only one who appeared for the interview in person. Muzumdar's first assignment will be the tour of Bangladesh, beginning July 9. India will play three T20s and as many ODIs in Mirpur. The Indian women's team, which has often lost high-stake games from winning position in the last five years, is yet to win a world title. Muzumdar, who is likely to get a two-year contract, will be expected to guide the team to an elusive ICC title in Bangladesh next year when the T20 World Cup will be played in September-October. Considering India's inability to close out knock-out games, most recently in the T20 World Cup semifinal against Australia earlier this year, the new head coach's area of focus will be to improve the physical fitness of the players besides working on their mental toughness. "Fitness is a major area of improvement for the women's cricket team. Some of the players in the national side really need to work on their fitness. Muzumdar also highlighted the need to have a full fledged support staff, including a mental trainer. "He is fully aware of what this team needs to get to the next level," the Board official added. The next two women's ICC events are in the sub-continent -- Bangladesh and India, and that also has gone in Muzumdar's favour. India will host women's ODI World Cup in September 2025. "Communication is not a problem with an Indian coach and he also has a rich experience of playing in the sub-continent conditions." This great mountain range has also been taking blame for the notoriously unpredictable Indian monsoons. Not anymore. Scientists at the <a href="http://news.mit.edu/2019/ocean-activity-control-summer-monsoons-0507">Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)</a> seem to have found that oceans have a role to play in deciding the fate of its unpredictable rains. The <keyword id="12350" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-Ocean">Indian ocean</keyword> and the mountains working in tandem might be the reason why the Indian monsoon is one of the most intense annual climate events in the world, according to the co-authors of the study, John Marshall and Nicholas Lutsko.

 Hotter with the wind The very same summer heat that warms up the Indian subcontinent also sends warm winds to sweep across the Indian ocean — up and over South Asia. As the winds head North, the water beneath pushes south. These waters, which flow south, transport heat, thereby cooling the ocean. This process creates a bigger difference between the temperature of land and the temperature of the ocean.

 The team of researchers was able to create a model of the Indian monsoon leaving the Himalayas out of the picture altogether — that too on a hunch. John Marshall and Nicholas Lutsko, co-authors of the study, initially suspected that adding oceans to a monsoon model would decrease its intensity but found the opposite to be true.

 Looking forward Lutsko and Marshall plan on using their research to explain why the monsoon system didn’t work when the northern hemisphere of the world used to be much colder. Their research could also be the key the making more accurate predictions about the monsoon rains as the influence of one more variable has been accounted for.
