But when they factor in the cost and the fact that you can still get a job in the US with an international diploma, it becomes "extremely attractive," he continued.Here are some tips from college advisors and students who have made the move.<h2 id="b7a5d8f8-2111-4abe-9070-ae42f98c5a27">1. Choose the right college for you</h2>To want to go abroad for school is one thing — to decide <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-choose-college-campus-tour-data-2023-12">which college to go to</a> is a whole other story."It's really important to home in on the type of environment you want," Kaplan said. For example, students can ask themselves if they would prefer living in a college town or a city college.Additionally, students should think about what industry they want exposure to, Kaplan said. The school's location can be a gateway to certain industries. London, for example, is great for students interested in finance, while Stockholm is ideal for students interested in the tech industry, he added."There are <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/american-couple-sent-both-kids-college-europe-france-spain-cost-2024-7">thousands of universities in Europe</a>, but when we start focusing on what we want out of that education, that really does allow us to narrow that list to make something more manageable," he said.<h2 id="a1d70dfa-2df0-4117-acc3-fc073ff8a2f3">2. Recognize that other parts of the world operate differently</h2>When <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/college-applications-advice-admissions-expert-apply-2023-10">applying for college</a> abroad, it's key to take note of the different requirements for your application."In some countries, the education system is much more centralized. They tend to go by some pretty hard metrics. So testing is a lot more important," said Robert Harry, an associate director of college counseling at Kent School, a boarding school in Connecticut.Additionally, Harry advised students to make sure that the degrees are <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/american-student-thailand-countryside-graduate-school-study-abroad-bangkok-masters-2024-8">American-accredited</a>, especially if they are interested in pursuing careers in law or medicine."If your goal is to then come back to America, you have to be very careful with the degrees and the qualifications some of them might not transfer when you come back," he said.<h2 id="026afd53-d18e-4f3e-b1a1-1ce0edac3f66">3. It's never too early to start planning</h2>After securing test scores, the next priority would be determining and <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/successful-ivy-league-college-application-look-insider-2024-5">developing an academic passion</a>, Kaplan said."The more experiences a person has within their field of interest, the stronger their application will be. That can be achieved through forward planning," he said.Harry agreed. Unlike in the US, where you might be applying for a college or university generally, you're often applying to study a specific subject at a college overseas. "So you need to prove to them that <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-write-best-college-application-cornell-admissions-director-2024-9">you have the foundational knowledge</a> to be successful," he said.For example, a student interested in pursuing economics can read books about different economies around the world or follow columnists that write about the subject, he said.Additionally, while looking for opportunities abroad, Harry advised that one should apply to at least four to six American institutions as a fallback option.<h2 id="5b2ace94-f182-4061-ae7b-1f678888bde2">4. Consider your finances</h2>Sharon Butler, the executive vice president of global education at <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/flywire-ceo-says-1-pitch-deck-slide-is-key-to-vc-fundraising-success-2019-8">Flywire</a>, a global payment platform used largely for international student fees, said that although universities abroad can offer cheaper tuition, students should also consider peripheral costs like visas, insurance, and medical tests. While these costs may not immediately come to mind, they can add up."Beyond the rent, look at everyday costs like food, transportation, healthcare, and living costs," said Butler, who works with students looking to move abroad for school.<a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/parents-didnt-support-financially-after-college-2024-7">Creating a budget</a> is crucial, she said. Parents should work with prospective students to determine the expected out-of-pocket cost for the family and devise a strategy to cover that."This advice is relevant for anyone attending university, but it's especially important when moving out of the US, where payment processes may be more complicated," she added.<h2 id="1d396b45-f6ce-4fe4-983b-6195e17c9874">5. Get yourself in the right headspace</h2>Once a decision to study abroad has been made, it's important to get into the right mindset.Amanda Mrozek, who transferred from a college in Michigan to Cologne in 2021, said she <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/american-moving-germany-college-university-things-to-know-2024-7">wasn't prepared for the stark difference</a> between schools in the US and Germany. "I knew it would be different, but it was kind of a shock when you're alone there," she told BI.Harry agreed that it is important to mentally prepare yourself. "It's not gonna be the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/a-day-in-the-life-of-notre-dame-football-captain-2024-9">typical American college experience</a> that all of your friends are going to be talking about. You are most likely going to be in the minority of kids that go abroad," he said."Recognize that your experience is going to be a bit different, but it doesn't mean it's any less rich or rewarding," he added.<h2 id="9392f39d-a7b7-4f63-bb9d-07a2b6889b20">6. Remember that you won't be away forever</h2>Kaplan said that although many students worry about being homesick, they should remember that studying abroad is <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/american-gen-z-college-europe-university-abroad-prague-brussels-affordable-2024-8">not the same as permanent immigration</a>. "If you want to return back to the US, you can," he said.Homesickness was one of the hardest aspects of moving abroad for Scarlett Kiaras-Atti, who graduated from high school in Kentucky and <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/american-student-romanticized-uk-edinburgh-scotland-oxford-college-university-london-2024-8">moved to Scotland for college</a> in 2018. In a major step toward protecting students and their families, the Indian government has issued new guidelines aimed at curbing misleading advertisements by coaching centres. The Centre's crackdown addresses exaggerated claims like “100% selection” or “guaranteed job security” — promises that often lead to disappointment among students who invest time and money expecting a near-certain outcome. <h2>Protecting consumers, not shutting down coaching</h2>On Wednesday, the Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) rolled out these guidelines in response to numerous complaints from the National Consumer Helpline. According to <keyword id="20003684" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="consumer-affairs" source="keywords">Consumer Affairs</keyword> Secretary Nidhi Khare, the government’s goal is not to shut down coaching centres but to ensure their ads don’t “undermine consumer rights.” “We have seen coaching centres deliberately concealing information from prospective students,” Khare said. “Therefore, we have come out with the guidelines to provide guidance to people involved in the coaching industry.” So far, the CCPA has issued 54 notices to violators and imposed penalties of around Rs 54.60 lakh. <h2>What’s prohibited?</h2>The guidelines lay out strict boundaries on what coaching centres can — and cannot — say in their ads. Here’s what the guidelines address: <ul><li>False Claims: Ads should not make unsubstantiated promises about “100% selection” or “100% job security.”</li><li>Course Details: No exaggerating or omitting information about courses, their duration, or outcomes.</li><li>Faculty Credentials: Qualifications of teachers must be presented accurately, with no fake credentials.</li><li>Fees and Refunds: All fees and refund policies must be transparent.</li><li>Selection Rates and Ranks: Coaching centres cannot claim high selection rates or exam rankings without proof.</li></ul>Additionally, they are not allowed to use successful candidates’ names, photos, or testimonials in ads without written consent from these individuals. Khare advised students to double-check the information provided by coaching centres. “Many UPSC students clear prelims and mains on their own and take only interview guidance from coaching centres,” she explained, encouraging students to verify the course details actually taken by successful candidates. The guidelines go beyond the broad term “coaching.” They define coaching as academic support, education, guidance, study programs, and tuition — but they exclude counselling, sports, and creative activities. The purpose of this definition is to keep the focus on academic and career-oriented programs, which are most prone to misleading ads. <h2>Full disclosure and consequences for violators</h2>Transparency is now mandatory, as coaching centres must display disclaimers and reveal essential course details. Facilities, infrastructure, and resources must be represented accurately, along with any required approvals or recognitions from authorities like AICTE or UGC. Khare, who also serves as the CCPA chief, stressed that coaching centres should accurately present the service, resources, and infrastructure provided. For instance, if they advertise “fully-equipped classrooms,” the guidelines require this to be an honest description. These guidelines come as a supplement to existing laws and are enforceable under the Consumer Protection Act. This means violators will face penalties, potentially similar to the Rs 54.60 lakh already imposed by the CCPA. It sounded like a dream to her: a chance to live abroad and earn an affordable college degree.Miezejeski, then a sophomore at a Connecticut high school, started to look into it seriously. She ended up <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/american-gen-z-college-europe-university-abroad-prague-brussels-affordable-2024-8">attending a university in Prague</a> and then moved to Brussels for graduate school. She graduated from both schools with no debt.Miezejeski is not alone. Like her, more American students are looking abroad to complete their college education.While<a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/nyu-student-hated-study-abroad-semester-florence-italy-2023-3"> study abroad</a> programs — which allow students to spend a semester or a year overseas — are nothing new, completing a full degree outside the US has been gaining popularity.A representative for the Institute of International Education, a nonprofit exchange organization based in New York, told BI the number of US-based students who went to college abroad has increased in the last year. "Most US colleges and universities anticipate increased or stable student participation in study abroad in the forthcoming 2024/25 academic year," the representative said. They said this includes students in non-exchange programs and those pursuing degrees overseas.James Edge, the owner of Beyond the States, a platform that helps students apply to bachelor's and master's programs abroad, said he's seen a 5 to 10% increase in students pursuing degrees abroad each year since he joined the company three years ago.Greg Kaplan, a private college admissions counselor and the author of "Earning Admission: Real Strategies for Getting Into Highly Selective Colleges," said interest has increased tenfold over the past six years. "Six years ago, if we had one student applying abroad, it was interesting," he said. Now, out of the 350 high school students his company works with yearly, 10 to 20% apply to college abroad, he said.There are several reasons for this, from an interest in specific programs to a desire to explore the world. But above all, experts and students alike have echoed the same sentiment: <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/college-tuition-costs-too-much-make-degrees-matter-less-jobs-2023-9">college in America is too expensive</a>.<h2 id="8e99aa2f-2e09-4281-86df-d39f0ee659f3">The skyrocketing prices of college in the US</h2>According to the<a target="_blank" href="https://nces.ed.gov/ipeds/Search?query=college%20tuition&amp;query2=college%20tuition&amp;resultType=all&amp;page=1&amp;sortBy=relevance&amp;overlayDigestTableId=202707"> National Center for Education Statistics</a>, students in the US spent an average of $28,297 a year — or around $113,188 for a four-year program — on tuition and required fees at public out-of-state schools in the academic year of 2022 to 2023.These fees have risen over the years. The <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.usnews.com/education/best-colleges/paying-for-college/articles/see-20-years-of-tuition-growth-at-national-universities">U.S. News &amp; World Report</a> found that among the 436 colleges in its annual rankings, out-of-state tuition fees at public universities have risen by around 32% over two decades after adjustments for inflation. The same report showed that in-state tuition fees at public universities have grown by 45%.And <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/cost-us-universities-wildly-expensive-education-tuition-fees-america-2024-3">private colleges</a> in the US can cost more than twice that much. Tuition this year at <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://seaver.pepperdine.edu/admission/financial-aid/undergraduate/costs/budget-costs.htm">Pepperdine University</a> in Malibu, which is ranked as one of the most expensive schools in the country, is $65,990."That sticker shock is very potent for families," said Robert Harry, an associate director of college counseling at Kent School, a boarding school in Connecticut.Harry estimates that in his 15 years of experience, the number of kids who went abroad for college increased from around 1% of any given high school class to as much as 5 or 10% of a class.<h2 id="da752867-c83d-49cb-9f93-4e420a8dea12">Many have their eyes set on Europe</h2>College in Europe has become an attractive alternative. For one, tuition is generally cheaper. <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://beyondthestates.com/">Beyond the States</a> lists the average tuition fee for European bachelor's programs as $7,390 a year for international students. The average is based on calculations from its database of 12,600 English-taught bachelor's programs in Europe. In some countries, like <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/moved-to-germany-from-us-school-almost-deported-dont-regret-2023-11">Germany, public college education is free</a>, even for international students.Many European university degrees often take three years to complete, so it's also one less year of college tuition to pay for. "You get an extra year of your life back," Edge said.American students often turn to English-speaking destinations like the UK and Ireland for their education abroad. He was waitlisted or rejected from all of them.A <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.commonapp.org/files/FY_application_trends_end_season_report_23-24.pdf">2024 report from Common App,</a> a college application platform, showed that application volume has grown by 171% since the 2014-15 academic year. The number of applications per applicant has risen by 46% in the same timeframe, now totaling 6.65 applications per person."When the Common App became ubiquitous, it started to get <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/more-competitive-than-ever-get-into-college-admissions-2024-1">really hard to get into American institutions</a> just because it's so much easier to apply to so many more of them," Harry said.It's pushed some parents and students to look elsewhere.For many, Europe is the answer. "Even if you haven't done all the extracurriculars, or if you haven't taken the SATs, it is much easier to get accepted to school in Europe because the way they do admissions is slightly different," Edge, owner of Beyond the States, said.For example, he said they may focus more on the student's academic strengths than on standardized tests.Zeidberg eventually applied to Toulouse Business School in France. He said the application process was smooth and efficient, and he was accepted two weeks later."It was like night and day," his mom, Jennifer Zeidberg, told BI.<h2 id="ea928511-b08c-486a-a718-951d6f05e28a">The benefits of college abroad go beyond cost</h2>In many US colleges, students declare a major after their freshman year. Many colleges outside the US are more specialized.That system appeals to many people who are sure of their interests. "If you are definitely a math person, knowing that you can do three or four years of math and never have to write another English essay — it's intriguing for people," Harry said.Scarlett Kiaras-Attari, who grew up in Kentucky and <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/american-student-romanticized-uk-edinburgh-scotland-oxford-college-university-london-2024-8">moved to Scotland in 2018</a> for undergrad, was one of them. "I was so interested in medieval history and Classics," she told BI. He ended up studying motorsports engineering at Oxford.For many, being able to travel easily is also a huge plus."You can just pop on a train and go right next door to Portugal or France, for example. Most students also lived off-campus and went straight home after class instead of hanging out on campus."It's just not fun," she previously told BI. "I understand people will say, 'You're supposed to be learning.' But most of them stayed in Connecticut or studied in nearby cities like Boston and New York. Where she's from, it's not common to go abroad, but it's a slow trend, she said.Since completing her degree in 2021, she hasn't looked back.She decided to stay in Europe and pursue a master's degree in Brussels. Her master's program was one year long and cost around $4,700 — almost a fifth of what she would have paid if she had pursued a master's at the University of Connecticut, a college in her state, based on the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://bursar.uconn.edu/tuition-fees/graduate/2024-2025/">university's website</a>.More importantly, Miezejeski gained experiences money can't buy."I have friends now all over the world," she said. "I've learned about all their cultures, how they do things and their languages. I've met incredible people and learned so much. The learning does not stop."

The course costs around ₹30 lakh for the five-year course and unlike many others, her father is bankrolling it, without her having to take a loan. Yet, in the last few months a lot has changed. Europe is in the throes of a possible recession, the value of Indian rupee is depreciating and more importantly, inflation in the continent is also impacting budgeted expenses. “Looks like I might have to take a loan after all because my living expenses will change drastically. I have spoken to students who live there and they all tell the same story,” Shewale sighs. Her story is similar to a number of Indian <keyword id="15304331" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="students-wanting-to-study-abroad" source="Orion">students wanting to study abroad</keyword> but those who have already taken admission this year have it worse – on rupee depreciation alone. Since the beginning of 2022, the rupee has fallen more than 7% against the dollar. <div type="image" title="rupee" height="900" width="1200" msid="94974075" hostid="261" sizebytes="49035"></div> ‘Loans could balloon by ₹3.5-5 lakh’ If a student had taken a loan in March this year, when rupee was at 75 against the dollar, it would add a few lakh into the loan, as per Ashwini Kumar, VP at MPower Financing, a public benefit corporation that helps students to study abroad. For every dollar of the loan, an extra ₹7 is added and it would inflate the loan and the interest as well. “On an average, a loan could get extended by around ₹3.5-5 lakh depending on the rupee exchange value at the time of the loan,” Kumar told Business Insider India. The problems don’t end there. Apart from tuition costs, Indian students also have to support themselves there and living expenses are going up as well. The Eurozone inflation is being <a href="https://www.euronews.com/next/2022/09/30/record-inflation-which-country-in-europe-has-been-worst-hit-and-how-do-they-compare">pegged at 10%, as per estimates</a>. Inflation in the US too has recently <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/international/us/us-inflation-soars-to-8-2-per-cent-highest-in-40-years/articleshow/94842348.cms">hit a 40-year high</a>, messing with economics of students abroad. Most Indian students head to these destinations. The third part of the triple whammy is from rising interest rates. This financial year, the Indian central bank raised repo rates four times and the base rates now stand at 5.9%. More interest rate hikes are expected in the near term and most experts see base rates stabilising once it’s around 6-6.5%. “Loans linked to MCLR and BPLR will see a gradual increase in the interest rate in the near future. The EMIs of current and future borrowers will rise due to this,” said Ankit Mehra, CEO and co-founder of GyanDhan, an education loan market place. Moreover, the psychological impact of a possible depreciation in rupee will also largely play on the minds of US and Europe-bound students and their parents, said Kumar. Students still eye foreign degrees Studying abroad is going to become much more expensive. However, experts say that this is not discouraging students from pursuing their higher education dreams. Shewale too intends to absorb the extra costs but does not intend to change her plans. “The return on investment in terms of quality of education, career growth, international exposure, skills developed, and networking has more intrinsic worth,” said Mehra. Kumar too says that students who are planning to go abroad this year and the next, have been planning it two years before, and it’s unlikely that the road bumps will change their plans, though some may choose to delay it. “There are a few sections of society wherein parents are managing the EMIs on the border, which is due to get affected. A student who had to arrange ₹25 lakh for their overseas education prior to the rate hike will find it difficult to arrange for additional funds given the parental income has not increased proportionally to the hike in the interest rates,” said Mehra. The two admission cycles will be July-August and January-February from the 2024-25 academic session. "If <keyword id="21269142" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-universities" source="keywords">Indian universities</keyword> can offer admission twice a year, it will benefit many students. Such as those who missed admission to a university in the July/August session due to a delay in the announcement of board results, health issues, or personal reasons. Biannual university admissions will help students maintain motivation since they do not have to wait one full year to be admitted if they miss admission in the current cycle," UGC Chairman Kumar said on Tuesday. Currently, UGC Regulations allow the Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) to admit students in one academic session in a year starting in July/August. An 'Academic session' is twelve months, beginning in July/August. Indian HEIs, therefore, follow the academic session that begins in July-August and ends in May-June. Considering the tremendous response and interest from the students in ODL and online programs in biannual admissions, in its meeting held on May 15 this year the UGC took a policy decision to allow Higher Education Institutions who offer programs in regular mode to admit students twice in a year, either in January/February or July/August from the coming academic year, the UGC chairman said. Those institutions that have the required infrastructure and teaching faculty can utilize the opportunity to admit students biannually. Offering biannual admissions is not mandatory for the HEIs; it is the flexibility that UGC provides to the HEIs who want to increase their student intake and offer new programmes in emerging areas. To be able to admit students twice a year, HEIs must make suitable amendments to their institutional regulations. UGC Chairman Kumar said, "With biannual admissions in place, Industries can also do their <keyword id="22014800" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="campus-recruitment" source="keywords">campus recruitment</keyword> twice a year, improving employment opportunities for the graduates." Biannual admissions will also enable the HEIs to plan their resource distribution, such as faculty, labs, classrooms and support services, more efficiently, resulting in a better functional flow within the university, he said. Noting that Universities worldwide already follow a biannual admission system, he said that if Indian institutions adopt the biannual admission cycle, they can enhance their international collaborations and student exchanges. "As a result, our global competitiveness will improve, and we will align with the global educational standards," the UGC Chairman said. Biannual admissions can substantially increase the Gross Enrolment Ratio and make India a 'Global Study Destination' as envisioned in National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, he said. Further, Kumar said that if HEIs adopt biannual admissions, they need to work on administrative intricacies, good planning for increased use of available resources, and providing seamless support systems for the smooth transition of students admitted at dissimilar times of the year. For better or for worse, this need to hustle is stitched into the fabric of our culture. Since I'd barely traveled abroad before <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/buenos-aires-is-a-great-city-for-expat-families-2023-11">I moved to Argentina</a>, this American hegemony was all I knew.In Argentina, though, this "busy culture" is pretty much nonexistent.This was one of the first things I noticed when I enrolled in classes at two local universities in Buenos Aires.Back in the US, my conversations with peers were typically focused on how busy we were. We'd dedicate walks to class and dinner conversations discussing all the homework we had to finish before the end of the evening, and that was normal to us.However, in Argentina, nobody seemed to wear busyness like a badge of honor. In fact, if I talked too much about what I had to do, my new friends started to worry."But what are you doing for fun?" they'd ask, and a lot of times, I genuinely had no answer.In the moments when there was a lull in the conversation, I started to reflect on why I always felt the need to be busy and the effect it was having on <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/gen-zers-talking-about-money-troubles-tiktok-finance-high-cost-2024-2">my mental health</a>. I began to loosen my grip on some of those thoughts while studying in Argentina.<h2>Time and punctuality are relative</h2>While studying in Argentina, another area where I became less anxious and stressed had to do with time and how I managed it.As a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/what-type-a-b-c-or-d-personalities-mean-2018-8">type-A student</a> with a bursting schedule, my college days were dictated by my paper planner and Google calendar. I cultivated one obligation after another as if I were conducting some bizarre overachiever's symphony.I'd easily become annoyed if something happened to throw off my schedule, and I had little tolerance for life to be unpredictable.In Argentina, however, I learned that time and punctuality are relative. During my months in <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/buenos-aires-surprising-things-first-trip-american-argentina-2023-6">Buenos Aires</a>, almost nothing happened when it was scheduled to occur. Buses ran late, business hours felt like suggestions, and friends never arrived for coffee dates when they said they would.At first, this lack of punctuality and reliability was irritating. There was no way for me to plan when everything around me was so unpredictable. I was often frustrated because I felt like I had no control over my circumstances.In life, we often feel as if we're in control of our circumstances. However, we're really quite powerless when it comes to situations beyond ourselves.No matter how much I wanted my professor to arrive on time or for the bus to come when it said it would, there was literally nothing I could do about it.While studying in Buenos Aires, I learned there was no use in stressing about these things. I started to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/the-right-way-to-set-boundaries-with-people-2023-10">understand boundaries</a> and what it truly means to accept the things I cannot change.<h2>Argentina showed me a different way of living</h2>No matter where you call home, life is full of stressors. However, one of the most rewarding aspects of traveling is it shows us how different communities deal with everyday inconveniences and troubles.As a student in Buenos Aires, I learned I didn't have to tackle my problems with an <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/death-casual-fringe-friendships-gen-z-sad-jobs-alone-2024-2">American perspective</a>. Instead of running myself to the point of exhaustion and dying on every hill, I had the power to let things go.Not everything was my battle, and I stopped fighting them like they were. I'm still giving myself grace to step into the rhythms of this new mindset, but I began to lean into it during my time in Argentina.

I'm a student of Yale's Saybrook College, which occupies the Memorial Quadrangle. This is the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/successful-ivy-league-college-application-look-insider-2024-5">Ivy League school's</a> best example of collegiate gothic architecture.Every day, I wake up to Sterling Memorial Library right outside my window. I can see the awe-inspiring Harkness Tower rising in the background behind my <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/college-food-best-dining-halls-2017-8">dining hall</a> and feel transported into a different time.When I first <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/yale-university-freshman-dorm-room-college-student-2023-12">toured Yale</a>, it felt like I encountered the sublime for the first time. I figured I would experience that feeling again.However, over the summer, while <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/more-american-students-avoid-debt-studying-abroad-college-europe-2024-10">studying abroad</a> in London, I had the opportunity to spend a day wandering around the streets of Oxford and Oxford University. I got to have that same magical experience all over again — magnified.<h2 id="2b1f426f-e1b8-4bcb-9d8c-ccb5edfe5839">I took a tour of the schools at Oxford</h2><a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/yale-student-study-abroad-grad-school-masters-2024-10">Oxford University</a> consists of over 30 individual schools or colleges. I was most familiar with All-Souls College at Oxford, but that school was closed to tourists for the month of August. However, I was able to walk around the famous Magdalen College.At Yale, a tour of a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/single-mother-professor-raised-daughters-college-campus-community-family-2024-3">residential college</a> might last around 10 minutes if you keep a good pace, so I didn't expect to spend the better part of an hour at Magdalen. But that's precisely what happened. Magdalen College was massive. It had two large green spaces and overlooked a segment of the River Cherwell where tourists were punting (riding in small boats called punts).I also toured the Radcliffe Camera, arguably the most famous building and my favorite. It's a massive, baroque temple-like building that is a bit imposing.<h2 id="22b2b9d4-a83d-41bc-b806-6d7220577ad2">It's clear that Oxford inspired Yale</h2>When I took the trip out to Oxford, I expected the campus to feel a bit like home. Once there, I felt like I was walking around the ideal of Yale itself — what my school strived to be and emulate.Oxford University is much, much older than Yale. While we are very proud of our 1701 charter date, Oxford was started at least 500 years before that. As a result, the university dominates the town surrounding it in a way that Yale — even as the biggest employer and contributor to the wealth of <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/visited-madison-connecticut-things-to-do-great-beach-town-2024-11">New Haven</a> — doesn't.Yale attempts to recreate Oxford in many ways — albeit in a somewhat confined space. Architecturally, of course, Yale's collegiate gothic architecture is a revival of the original <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/gothic-inspired-interior-halloween-decor-dark-macabre-design-meet-owners-2023-2">Gothic style</a>, in which many buildings in Oxford were constructed.<h2 id="66622b96-c6c4-4503-9629-17840fecd6c6">Oxford's surrounding town is drastically different than New Haven</h2>A big difference between <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/exercise-makes-you-happier-than-money-says-yale-and-oxford-study-2019-4">Oxford and Yale</a> was the nature of the towns surrounding the schools.Yale's New Haven is a proper <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/top-cities-with-cheaper-than-average-rent-south-midwest-inflation-2024-11">American city</a> and feels like it. Everything is on a nice grid layout, and we are surrounded by American convenience. It feels like home.While Oxford is a city, it feels like one that has been around for centuries. Even before I got to the school, cobblestone pedestrian paths, and winding alleyways made me feel like I was in a different era. The city leans toward this impression; many shops play into the medieval university feel, which I loved.<h2 id="cc3dc4a5-e7ea-4ecb-89b1-80d0cdc62d73">I can see myself at Oxford in the future</h2>As I left Oxford for London, I was left in awe of the city and the university. Of course, it's still an active university in a 21st-century town, but it was incredibly well preserved. If you looked at the Radcliffe Camera against the backstop of the university church at just the right angle, you could feel teleported back centuries.Although I have a long way to go and a lot can change, I can definitely see myself going to Oxford for <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/daughter-graduated-high-school-didnt-enroll-college-2024-10">graduate school</a>. Even if that doesn't happen, I know I will return to Oxford for another tour. I can't wait to go back.

The remarks by Miller came on Sunday as the federal government of Prime Minister <keyword id="1740494" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="justin-trudeau" source="Orion">Justin Trudeau</keyword> faced criticism for welcoming an increasing number of immigrants - both permanent and temporary residents - while the country faces an acute housing shortage. In an interview with CTV News, Miller said the federal government will need to have talks with provincial governments "to make sure that the provinces that have not been doing their jobs actually rein in those numbers on a pure volume basis." "That volume is disconcerting," Miller said, in reference to the number of international students in Canada. "It's really a system that has gotten out of control." A cap on international students would not be a "one-size-fits-all solution" to housing shortages across Canada, Miller noted. But he did not reveal the size of the reduction the government is planning on making. India was the first among the top ten origin countries of study permit holders in 2022 in Canada, with a total of 319,000 students. Meanwhile, new reporting by The Canadian Press news agency - citing internal documents obtained through an access to information request - shows the federal government was warned by public servants two years ago that its ambitious immigration targets could jeopardise housing affordability. The Liberals have set targets aiming to bring in 485,000 immigrants this year, and 500,000 in both 2025 and 2026. Temporary residents, largely international students and migrant workers, are another part of the equation, with more than 300,000 of them arriving in Canada in just the third quarter of last year. Miller said he will be looking in both the first and second quarter of this year at possibly setting a cap on international students to help reduce the demand for housing. When asked why the government is only considering a cap now, when the idea of one has been floated for months, Miller said there's a need to sort out numbers on a federal level before looking with "a little more granularity" at what individual academic institutions are doing in different provinces, possibly profiting off bringing in more international students. "We need to be doing our jobs and making sure that we have a system that actually makes sure people have a financial capability to come to Canada, that we're actually verifying offer letters," Miller said. "And now it's time for us to have a conversation about volumes and the impact that that is having in certain areas." When pressed further on the number of international students coming to Canada far outpacing the number of homes the federal government has announced it's planning to help build, Miller also said housing is only part of the calculation when it comes to immigration targets. The pressing need to bring down the average age of the workforce also needs to be taken into consideration, he said. And while he wouldn't give specifics, Miller said a cap on international students is something the federal government is considering, "and will continue to consider." "We have a sense of what those numbers would look like, what the reduction of those numbers looks like, out of courtesy to my colleagues in the provinces, those are discussions that we're first going to have around the negotiating table," he said, adding the financial needs of academic institutions is also a factor.

Additionally, NYU's affiliations worldwide allow my financial aid and scholarship to travel with me — along with additional funds and study-away grants that have made the costs to zero.Because of this, I studied at NYU Florence in the fall and NYU Paris in the spring of my sophomore year. I'm getting ready for NYU London in spring.<h2>In Florence, I learned to find comfort in the mundane</h2>When I got to Florence in my sophomore year, I felt like a freshman again; I had to adjust to a different city by myself. Sometimes I was completely alone and had to find ways to be OK with that.Luckily, I found biking. I biked through the streets of Florence daily and fell in love with the city.Through biking, I found comfort in being alone. I used my time biking to explore new towns, while zooming to the beat of a chill song. I didn't need to go on extravagant and expensive trips each weekend to feel fulfilled: The intimate trips I took on my bike became the most memorable.<h2>Unfortunately, anti-Blackness followed me to Italy</h2>Before I went to Florence, I watched multiple TikTok videos of Black women who went to Italy sharing how horrible their experience was. It scared me enough that I almost reconsidered studying there, but I went anyway.Unfortunately, my fears were validated. I did have to worry about being out alone too late as a woman, especially as a Black woman. I often was nervous about being kidnapped, robbed, fetishized, or treated poorly just because of my race — just like the other Black women were on TikTok.I noticed that I was catcalled more aggressively than my non-Black, female classmates when we were out late in Italy. It seemed that sexual verbal violence was more accepted when it was against Black women. It's sad but true.I've learned each city has issues, but I'm glad I was prepared for it. Despite this, I loved my semester in Florence.<h2>During the spring semester of my sophomore year, I studied abroad again; this time, I went to Paris</h2>Before arriving in Paris, I had high expectations — based on my experiences in Florence. I thought living and studying in Paris would be easier than in Florence because it's a larger city where I could interact with more people from different ethnic backgrounds. My sentiment quickly shifted.While there were many nice people that I interacted with, there were a lot of negative views of me as an American. I had to step back and understand that these views were not personal to me but reactions to the actions of other Americans in general.I leaned into my other identities: I'm Black, Caribbean, Haitian, and St. Lucian, as well as a New Yorker. I found ways to use my different identities to connect with different Parisians. Once I started doing this, I began to come to peace with the major cultural differences and enjoyed the city.<h2>Once I learned to adjust to each city, I enjoyed my study-abroad experience</h2>Traveling isn't easy, especially as a Black woman. Studying abroad with a romantic, hyperunrealistic, and stereotypical view of a new country will not help at all, I learned. I had to accept that as a Black person, the racism I experienced in America would not be less severe in Europe — just different. I had to adapt to living in another part of the world where racism is alive and well.None of that will stop me from doing what I believe is best for me: traveling the world. I'm still looking forward to my third study-abroad semester in spring, this time in London.
