The S&amp;P 500 is up 0.5%, trading at 1835, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average is 0.6% higher at 16,530.
Treasuries are mostly flat from yesterday's close, and gold is down 0.8%, trading below $1230 an ounce.
Data released earlier this morning revealed that the U.S. trade deficit narrowed to $34.3 billion in November from October's $39.3 billion figure, way more than analysts expected. The release had no immediate impact on <keyword id="31671" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="markets">markets</keyword>, however.

The Stock Market Is Rallying

Mumbai: Indian stock markets rallied on Monday after the <keyword id="20032950" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="BJP-led-government" source="keywords">BJP-led government</keyword> secured a majority in the latest state elections in Maharashtra. The <keyword id="20641216" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="Nifty-50" source="keywords">Nifty 50</keyword> index gained more than 1.45 per cent or 346.30 points to open at 24,253.55 points, while the BSE <keyword id="19896382" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sensex" source="keywords">Sensex</keyword> index surged 1,076 points or 1.36 percent to open at 80,193.47 points. Experts noted that the election results have an impact on the markets today, and if past trends are followed, the markets may witness some rally amid the return of the BJP in the Maharashtra state elections. <keyword id="20161891" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ajay-Bagga" source="keywords">Ajay Bagga</keyword> Banking and Market Expert stated that "The just concluded elections in Maharashtra, the results of which were declared on November 23rd, will have a positive immediate impact on the stock markets. The landslide win for the BJP lead coalition in the Maharashtra state elections could lead to a short-term boost to the Indian stock markets which have been in a declining mode" He further added "Investors will interpret this mandate as favourable for the capex and infrastructure push that is ongoing in Maharashtra. The beneficiary sectors of this election are industrials, infrastructure, manufacturing, real estate and financials". In the sectoral indices on the National Stock Exchange, <keyword id="20065014" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Nifty-Realty" source="keywords">Nifty Realty</keyword> and <keyword id="19941314" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Nifty-PSU-Bank" source="keywords">Nifty PSU Bank</keyword> rallied with a surge of more than 2 percent, while other major indices also gained more than 1.5 per cent, including Nifty Metal, Nifty Media, and Nifty Oil &amp; Gas. In the Nifty 50 list, 49 stocks gained during the opening session, while only one stock declined. Shri Finance opened as the top gainer in the Nifty 50. The shares of the AdGroup also surged around 2 percent at the time of filing this report. <keyword id="19967296" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Adani-Green" source="keywords">Adani Green</keyword> also climbed around 4 percent. "We are most likely to break the falling 20-day average that lies at 24,030, which will be the first time that'd happen since the record high of 27th September. Seasonality trends between now and the end of the year have been historically positive, with the Nifty rising 80% of the time during this period with an average return of over 4 per cent" Akshay Chinchalkar, Head of Research, Axis Securities. In other Asian markets, Japan and South Korea indices rallied. The Nikkei 225 index surged more than 1.5 percent, South Korea's Kospi also rose by 1.5 percent, Taiwan's Weighted Index was up by 0.48 percent, while Hong Kong's Hang Seng index was down marginally by 0.14 percent at the time of filing this report.

After hitting a high of 30,847.10 at 9:55 am, the 30-share BSE barometer was trading 925.67 points or 3.10% higher at 30,819.63. Similarly, the NSE Nifty was quoting 270.05 points, or 3.09%, up at 9,018.80. HDFC was the top gainer in the Sensex pack, surging up to 5%, followed by Maruti, Bharti Airtel, Bajaj Finance, Tata Steel, Hero MotoCorp and ICICI Bank. On the other hand, HUL was the sole laggard. In the previous session, the BSE barometer closed 173.25 points or 0.58% lower at 29,893.96, and the Nifty settled 43.45 points, or 0.49%, down at 8,748.75. Foreign institutional investors (FIIs) were net buyers in the capital market, as they bought equity shares worth Rs 1,943.41 crore on Wednesday, according to provisional exchange data. According to experts, hopes of another financial stimulus hope before the end of the lockdown period buoyed investor sentiment in early session. Global Cues Further, slowing pace of fresh COVID-19 cases has also lent some momentum to global markets, the analyst said. On Wednesday (April 9), the Dow Jones Industrial Average jumped 779.71 points, or 3.44%, to 23,433.57. The S&amp;P 500 rose 90.57 points, or 3.41%, to 2,749.98. The Nasdaq Composite Index increased 203.64 points, or 2.58%, to 8,090.90. All the 11 primary S&amp;P 500 sectors ended higher, with real estate and energy up 7.41% and 6.74%, respectively, outperforming the rest. The market also found some support after US Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders dropped out of the race Wednesday, paving the way for the party's only remaining candidate Joe Biden to become the Democratic nominee. The news boosted the market mood as Biden is viewed by Wall Street as a more market-friendly candidate than Sanders, according to analysts. Bourses in Shanghai, Hong Kong, and Seoul were trading on a positive note, while those in Tokyo were in the red. Benchmark exchanges on Wall Street ended significantly higher in overnight trade. Brent crude futures, the global oil benchmark, rose 1.55% to USD 33.34 per barrel. The death toll due to the novel <keyword id="1754604" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="coronavirus">coronavirus</keyword> in India rose to 166 and the number of cases to 5,734, according to the Union Health Ministry. Global tally of the infections has crossed 14.8 lakh, with over 88,000 deaths. Indian stock market indices rally over 3% amidst positive cues from global markets

The <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/closing-bell-april-15-2014-2014-4">stock market rally</a>, which started at around 1:00 p.m. ET is continuing in the after-hours session in the futures markets.
In the wake of better-than-expected earnings announcements from <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/intel-q1-2014-earnings-2014-4">Intel</a> and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/yahoo-q1-earnings-2014-4">Yahoo</a>, S&amp;P 500 futures are squeaking higher on the CME.

Stocks Continue To Rally In The Futures Market

The S&P 500 briefly erased its 2020 losses in a wild rally. Here's how much each sector jumped after the coronavirus sell-off.

January was a rough month as turmoil in the emerging economies appeared to cause world markets to come down.
Stocks, bonds, currencies... it seemed like everything but U.S. Treasuries tumbled.
But that's not exactly true.
Italy of all places saw its stock market tick higher. And it might surprise everyone to hear that Indonesia, home to one of the so-called <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/heres-how-the-fragile-five-are-doing-2014-1">"Fragile Five" currencies</a>, jumped over 3% for the month.
In local currency terms, there were even more markets that closed the month at closer to breakeven.

Some Stock Markets Actually Rallied In January

The Dow is up almost 90 points and the S&amp;P 500 is about 12 points higher.
According to the BEA's third and final estimate, third quarter U.S. <keyword id="35050" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="gdp">GDP</keyword> <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/us-gdp-q3-2013-12">grew 4.1%</a> at an annualized rate. Economists were looking for a 3.6% print. Personal consumption growth also grew to 2.0% from the previous 1.4% estimate.
Even real final sales growth, often heralded as a more important figure, was <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/real-final-sales-revised-to-25-2013-12">revised up to 2.5%</a> from last month's tepid estimate of 1.9%.

This Is Turning Into Another Nice Stock Market Rally

U.S. stocks are rallying following the release of better-than-expected new home sales data.
Treasuries are getting a boost too, however, and equity indices across Europe are in the red as traders eye quickly unfolding developments in the Ukrainian political drama.
Right now, the S&amp;P 500 is trading at 1851, up 0.4%.
The release of monthly new home sales data at 10 AM ET <a href="http://t.co/eekk86JnEs">revealed a 9.6% rise</a> in new home sales in February. This was well above Wall Street's consensus estimate of a 3.4% decline and runs counter to the story that weather has been the cause of weakness in key economic indicators in recent months.
In Ukraine, there are reports of violence in the pro-Russian region of Crimea. This morning, Russian president Vladimir Putin <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/ukraines-currency-tanks-2014-2">put Russian combat troops on high alert</a> for a drill, expressing concern for the safety of ethnic Russians in Ukraine.
The Ukrainian hryvnia is in freefall and weakness has spilled over into the Russian ruble as well.
But markets around the world are on edge.
"The current run up in all fixed income is being attributed to Russian President Putin's orders for immediate combat readiness of troops in central and western Russia," says Tom Tucci, head of Treasury trading at CIBC.

This comes as U.S. economic data continues to signal a spring slowdown. <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/us-q1-2013-gdp-first-estimate-2013-4">Q1 GDP</a> grew at a slower pace than expected, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/durable-goods-orders-march-2013-4">durable goods orders</a> disappointed in April, and the housing market is showing <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/existing-home-sales-march-2013-4">signs of slowing</a>.
Meanwhile, the <a href="http://www.bespokeinvest.com/thinkbig/2013/4/26/earnings-and-revenue-beat-rates-by-quarter.html">current earnings season</a> continues to be less than stellar.
Experts have offered two interesting theories for the persistent stock market rally, which we will get to a little later.
This <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/economic-data-april-29-may-3-2013-4">week will be loaded with economic data</a> and earnings announcements from around the world.

<li>Here Comes The Fed - The members of the Federal Open Market Committee meet this week to set monetary policy. They already have their foot on the gas pedal with quantitative easing and all of their other efforts to keep interest rates very low. But with the economy showing signs of slowing, will they get even more aggressive? "While the Fed will acknowledge the recent pause in the data since the March meeting, the slowdown is not large enough to warrant any major changes to the FOMC communique," said Deutsche Bank's Joe LaVorgna. "The June FOMC meeting would be the more appropriate time to reexamine the QE program given that the Fed will have two more payroll reports as well as updated economic forecasts."</li>
<li>Can A Tweet Break The Market? - Last week, a <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/ap-tweet-on-white-house-2013-4">false AP headline</a> hit Twitter that read "Breaking: Two Explosions in the White House and Barack Obama is Injured." Within a matter of seconds, the stock market collapsed almost faster than a trader could say sell. A few seconds later, the AP and others confirmed that the headline was indeed false, and the markets came all of the way back. Thanks to the recovery, people don't seem to be too concerned about the wild volatility. Nevertheless, some experts still worry about the presence of computerized trading systems that react to headlines in ways humans don't.</li>

Economic Calendar
<ul>
<li>Personal Income And Spending (Monday): Economists estimate that income grew by 0.4% in March, while spending climbed by just 0.1%. "We already know from last week’s GDP data that real consumption rose at an impressive annualised rate of 3.2% in the first quarter, so the interest in March’s personal spending and income data will be to see just how sharp the slowdown in spending was at the end of the quarter," said Capital Economics' Paul Dales.</li>
<li>ISM Manufacturing (Wednesday): Economists expect the headline number to come down to 51.0 from 51.3 in March. "We expect little change, with manufacturing down slightly and non-manufacturing up slightly," said High Frequency Economics' Jim O'Sullivan who's looking for a 51.0 reading.</li>
<li>The Jobs Report (Friday): Economists estimate that the economy added 145k nonfarm payrolls in April, up from 88k in March. "Last month, notable losses were recorded in manufacturing, retail trade, trade, transportation and warehousing and government," said Wells Fargo's John Silvia who has a 150k estimate. "Despite initial jobless claims slightly higher in April than in March, we do expect employment to bounce back a bit this month, but not up to the 200,000-plus job gains we saw earlier this year."</li>

Market Update
So, with the recent economic data disappointing and earnings announcements lagging, what's driving the markets?
Analysts have advanced at least two interesting theories.
1) Cash Return: "[D]uring the current earnings season, US corporations continue to announce dividend increases and more share buybacks," said <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/market-rally-buybacks-and-dividends-2013-4">stock market guru Ed Yardeni</a> as he rationalized the rally. "Previously, I’ve shown that this corporate cash flow into the stock market--which totaled $2.1 trillion for the S&amp;P 500 since stock prices bottomed during Q1-2009 through Q4-2012--has been driving the bull market since it began."
2) The End Of Austeriy: "Some traders ... think that the new rally really kicked in when news that a graduate student had found flaws in the Reinhart/Rogoff paper on the limiting power of public debt on the economy – thus casting doubt on that thesis," said <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/cashin-the-reinhart-rogoff-rally-2013-4">UBS's Art Cashin</a>. Cashin is talking about UMass grad student Thomas Herndon, who has basically turned the global <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/stephen-colbert-on-thomas-herndon-and-reinhart-and-rogoff-2013-4">austerity movement into a joke</a>. Austerity has been a major drag for economic growth, especially in many of the developed European countries.

Why The Stock Market Will Rally Without The Economy

<ul><li>Indian benchmark stock indices have nearly doubled since crashing in March 2020.</li><li>However, the economic situation might leave you confused if you compare it with the <keyword id="6357440" type="DEFINITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Stock-Market">stock market</keyword> performance.</li><li>But there is a reason why the stock markets are on a bull run while the economy hasn’t picked up pace yet.</li><li>Nilesh Shah, the managing director of <keyword id="831683" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Kotak-Mahindra-Asset-Management">Kotak Mahindra Asset Management</keyword> company explains this phenomenon using a simple analogy.</li></ul>The Indian stock markets have seen a bull rally like we’ve never seen before. In his retort, Shah explained that while markets are forward-looking, economic data is backward-looking. He cited the spike in GST collections ⁠—<a href="https://pib.gov.in/PressReleaseIframePage.aspx?PRID=1685332"> a record high in December</a> ⁠— aside from<a href="https://www.gstatic.com/covid19/mobility/2021-01-12_IN_Mobility_Report_en-GB.pdf"> data from the Google mobility index</a> and the Reserve Bank of India’s<a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/markets/forex/forex-reserves-up-by-758-mn-to-lifetime-high-of-586-082-bn/articleshow/80289432.cms"> foreign exchange reserves</a> to back his argument. “Put all of this data together, we are seeing a month-on-month improvement in the economy,” Shah explained. <div type="image" title="GST Collections 2020" msid="80339488" hostid="261"></div> <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="Unemployment numbers show a decline, too" comment="subhead" text="Unemployment numbers show a decline, too">Unemployment numbers show a decline, too</cmsannotation> Shah notes that the unemployment number for the beginning of January is 7.4%, down from 9.06% in December. “The economy is slowly and steadily improving, and that is reflecting in our PMI number which is in the expansionary zone,” Shah said.
