"An Indian Air Force vehicle convoy was attacked by militants in the Poonch district of J&amp;K, near Shahsitar. Cordon and search operations are underway presently in the area by local military units. The convoy has been secured, and further investigation is under progress," tweeted the <keyword id="19900590" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="iaf" source="keywords">IAF</keyword> Media Co-ordination Centre on X. The injured personnel were evacuated to Udhampur for treatment on IAF choppers, where one of them succumbed. Another soldier is reported to be in critical condition, as confirmed by security force officials. "In the ensuing gunfight with terrorists, the Air Warriors fought back by returning fire. In the process, five IAF personnel received bullet injuries, and were evacuated to the nearest military hospital for immediate medical attention. One Air Warrior succumbed to his injuries later. Further operations are on by the local security forces," said the IAF. The soldier who succumbed was undergoing treatment at the command hospital at Udhampur. The remaining three are stable as per the Security Force officials, reported ANI. Following the attack that occurred in the evening around Shah Sitar and Shashidhar areas in the Poonch sector. Security forces initiated a search and cordon operation, as stated by security forces' officials. In response to the attack, forces have increased patrolling and vehicle checks in the area. The convoy was en route to the Sanai Top in the Surankote area of the district. The terrorists are suspected to be belonging to the same group that ambushed Indian troops in the Bufliaz area nearby on December 21, as per the Times of India report. The December attack last year had killed four soldiers and injured three. Earlier, in November 2023, a prolonged gunfight between Indian Army and the terrorists responsible for frequent attack on civilians in the region has resulted in deaths of five army personnel, including two captains. The Poonch sector belongs to the Anantnag-Rajouri parliamentary constituency which will vote for the Lok Sabha elections on May 25. Congress leaders Malikarjun Kharge and <keyword id="19895780" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="rahul-gandhi" source="keywords">Rahul Gandhi</keyword> extended condolences over the death of IAF personnel. In 2023 — 24 years after the tragic war — a total of around 336 such unexploded bombs were reportedly neutralised by the Army. Residents live in constant fear of accidental detonations, especially during construction or excavation work. The Siachen glacier at the height of around 20,000 feet in the Karakoram mountain range is known as the highest militarised zone in the world where soldiers have to battle frostbite and high winds. Under its "<keyword id="21291144" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Operation-Meghdoot" source="keywords">Operation Meghdoot</keyword>", the Indian Army established its full control over the glacier on April 13, 1984. "The Indian Army's control over the Siachen glacier has not only been a story of unparalleled valour and determination but also an incredible journey of technological advancements and logistical improvements that transformed it from one of the most formidable terrains into a symbol of indomitable spirit and innovation," said an official. The initiatives, especially laid out in the last five years, have made significant strides in improving the living conditions and operational capabilities of the personnel deployed in Siachen, he said on the condition of anonymity. In January last year, Captain Shiva Chauhan from the Army's Corps of Engineers was posted at a frontline post in the Siachen glacier, in the first such operational deployment of a woman Army officer at a key battlefield. The official cited above said there has been a noteworthy improvement in the aspect of mobility in Siachen. "The development of an extensive network of tracks and the introduction of all-terrain vehicles (ATV) have significantly improved mobility across the glacier," he said. Another official said innovations like the DRDO-developed ATV bridges have enabled the Army to overcome natural obstacles, while high-quality "Dyneema" ropes in aerial cableways ensure seamless supply lines to even the most-remote outposts. "The induction of heavy-lift helicopters and logistic drones has vastly improved the supply of essentials to the personnel deployed in posts that are cut off, especially in winters," he said. "The availability of special clothing, mountaineering equipment and advanced rations has enhanced the ability of the soldiers to withstand the harsh conditions of the world's coldest battlefield," the official added. He said gadgets, such as pocket weather trackers, with each soldier provides timely weather updates and warn them about possible avalanches. "Recent initiatives concerning the improvement of connectivity have ensured that the personnel in forward posts in the northern and central glacier regions have access to fresh ration and vegetables instead of tinned ration, an aspect that could not have been imagined a few years ago," the official said. "Fresh ration and vegetables are now a reality for our forward posts, thanks to new logistic initiatives," he added. There has been a focus on improvement in mobile and data connectivity in the region as well. "The introduction of the VSAT technology has revolutionised communication on the glacier, providing the troops with data and internet connectivity," the second official said. "This leap in technology has enhanced real-time situational awareness, telemedicine capabilities and the well-being of our soldiers by keeping them connected with their families," he said. The VSAT or very small aperture terminal is a data-transmission technology. The Army has also been focusing on boosting the medical infrastructure in Siachen. The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has established telemedicine nodes that provide critical medical support not only to the troops but also to the local populace and tourists in the Nubra valley. "The medical facilities in Partapur and the base camp boast of some of the best medical and surgical specialists, state-of-the-art HAPO chambers and oxygen generation plants, besides life-support systems. This has ensured that all endeavours are made to save every life in this challenging terrain," said a third official. Indian Army marks 4 decades of presence in Siachen glacier

The events were conducted at Agartala from May 28 to June 1 this year. On May 28, a children's painting competition was organised with the theme "Painting a Green Future" in which a total of 33 children unleashed their creativity to showcase their messages of "Saving Mother Earth". Speaking in the Lok Sabha today, the Defence Minister said that Indian Army bravely stopped the Chinese People Liberation Army (PLA) PLA troops from encroaching on Indian territory, and forced them to withdraw to their posts. "On December 9, 2022 in the Yangtse area of Tawang sector PLA troops encroached upon and attempted to change status quo. This attempt was tackled by our troops in a determined manner. There was fist fight in during this face-off as well. Our troops bravely stopped PLA from encroaching upon our territory and forced them to go back to their post," Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said in the Lok Sabha. The minister said that the issue had been taken up with China through diplomatic channels. "After this incident, on December 11, the local commander of the area held a flag meeting with his Chinese counterpart under the established system and discussed this incident. The Chinese side was refused all such actions and told to maintain peace at the border," Singh told the Lok Sabha. The Defence Minister said that no <keyword id="1052484" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="indian-troops" source="Orion">Indian troops</keyword> were killed or seriously injured in the incident. Singh said, "In this face-off, a few soldiers on both sides suffered injuries. I'd like to tell this House that none of our soldiers died or suffered any serious injury. Due to the timely intervention of Indian military commanders, PLA soldiers have retreated to their own locations." "This matter has also been taken up with China through diplomatic channels. I want to assure the House that our forces are committed to guard our borders and ready to thwart any attempt that will be made to challenge it," Rajnath Singh said. Indian, Chinese troops clash at Naku La — many left injured on both sides

The People’s Liberation Army (PLA) soldier was apprehended in the Demchok region of eastern Ladakh on Monday. According to the Indian Army, the PLA soldier looked disoriented when he was found and was provided with the necessary medical assistance and oxygen. Meanwhile, China maintains that the only reason the soldier crossed the border was because he was “helping the local herdsman find lost yak.” Both countries have often disagreed about the demarcation of the Line of Actual Control (LAC) — especially since the war of 1962. And so, having a soldier stray from one side to the other along the 3,440-kilometer disputed border isn’t unheard of. Even the Indian Army, in its statement, said that the soldier would be handed back to the Chinese as per ‘established protocols.’ As recently as last month, China had five Indian nationals in its custody after they strayed across the border — albeit, they were not soldiers but ordinary citizens. Either way, they were released back to India within a couple of days. India-China border tensions continue to simmer Since June, tensions have been exceptionally high between the two Asian giants when a clash in <keyword id="9241086" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Galwan-Valley">Galwan Valley</keyword> killed 20 Indian soldiers and left an undisclosed number of casualties on the Chinese side. This was the first fatal confrontation between India and China since 1975 and took place amid the COVID-19 pandemic. It’s also the first time in nearly half a century — 45 years — that either side has accused the other of firing shots along the border. Ordinarily, the 1996 agreement of cooperation between Indian and China dictates that the use of guns and explosives near the border is prohibited in the interest of maintaining peace. Since the Galwan incident, both sides have had at least 16 rounds of talks. The most recent was between the military leaders of both countries. While both sides agree that disengagement is imperative, neither is prepared to back away from their current positions where friction points are located. Analysts believe that while both sides do have <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/defense/news/india-military-options-against-china-explained-by-experts/articleshow/77743778.cms">military options on the table</a>, the best way forward remains bilateral dialogue. <ul class="summary-list"><li>In October, US and Indian soldiers trained in <keyword id="12020240" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="alaska" source="Orion">Alaska</keyword> during the latest version of the <keyword id="12658337" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="yudh-abhyas" source="Orion">Yudh Abhyas</keyword> exercise.</li><li>This year's iteration was the 17th of the exercise but only the second time it has been in Alaska.</li></ul>US and Indian soldiers have conducted the Yudh Abhyas exercise for 17 years, but the version held in late October was only the second time they've ventured to Alaska for it.This year's exercise was conducted as both countries face rising tensions with <keyword id="11892748" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="china" source="Orion">China</keyword>, but that was far from mind as soldiers scrambled through deep snow and over mountainous terrain.Relations with China "did not enter anybody's mind in the course of this exercise," Col. Jody Shouse, the senior US Army officer at the exercise, told Insider in an interview in October. "This exercise was completely about coming together with the <keyword id="11893656" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="indian-army" source="Orion">Indian Army</keyword> and becoming one, and China was not factored into this in any way."<div type="image" title="Indian soldiers with rifles in Alaska" height="1428" width="2000" msid="88059617" hostid="261"></div>While strategic-level issues, mainly disputes with China, have brought the countries closer in recent years, exercises like Yudh Abhyas are a part of decades-long efforts by their militaries to work together.Those "bottom-up" efforts are not always linked to higher-level strategic rationales, said Arzan Tarapore, a research scholar at Stanford University focused on South Asian security.The US and Indian militaries are "training to share knowledge about certain mission sets, to share knowledge about certain competencies, and to learn about each other," Tarapore told Insider. "That's just what they do."<h2>What Alaska offers</h2><div type="image" title="Indian soldiers and US Army paratroopers during Yudh Abhyas in Alaska" height="1335" width="2000" msid="88059619" hostid="261"></div>Yudh Abhyas alternates between <keyword id="11892747" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="india" source="Orion">India</keyword> and the US, and this iteration was a year in the making, according to Shouse, commander of the US Army's 4th Infantry Brigade Combat Team (Airborne) — the Army's newest airborne brigade combat team and the only one in the Pacific.The US and Indian units involved and other higher-level US commanders met several times over the past year to arrange the exercise's two components: a command-post exercise simulating a UN peacekeeping mission and a field-training exercise in different locations in Alaska, held simultaneously."We had to select officers from various areas and fields of expertise for the CP exercise. Some of them had some experience with the UN before," Brig. Parag Nangare, 136th (I) Infantry Group commander and senior Indian Army officer at the exercise, told Insider during the interview."They brought their experiences and their standard operating procedures with them. We brought ours with us, and then we were able to put them together and create one standard operating procedure at the command-post exercise level," Shouse said.<div type="image" title="US and Indian soldiers during Yudh Abhyas in Alaska" height="1333" width="2000" msid="88059621" hostid="261"></div>The field-training exercise was in two parts. The first week consisted of "a kind of a round-robin circuit drill" during which US and Indian soldiers formed four teams that each spent a day at different stations, Shouse said.Those stations included training to evacuate casualties and sling-loading artillery with helicopters, load and unload aircraft, counter-drone and counter-improvised-explosive-device training, rappel towers and obstacle courses, and weapons familiarization. They also had sports days and <a href="https://newsable.asianetnews.com/video/india-defence/yudh-abhas-2021-sidelines-from-bollywood-dance-numbers-to-roasting-marshmallows-r1kp0z" target="_blank" rel="noopener">cultural exchanges</a>.The first week was "the building block of the cohesiveness" that was seen during the final exercise, held in Alaska's mountains during the last week of October, Nangare said.US and Indian soldiers also went to the <a href="https://www.jber.jb.mil/Portals/144/units/JPARC/PDF/JPARC-Black-Rapids-Training-Area.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Black Rapids training area</a> near Denali Mountain for training in "very extreme altitudes and a very extreme, mountainous environment," Shouse said.That training, done at altitudes of 14,000 feet, allowed both sides to hone their craft.<div type="image" title="US and Indian soldiers rappel down wall" height="1335" width="2000" msid="88059623" hostid="261"></div>"The lesson learned, really, in all this is the Indian army are probably better climbers than the US Army," Shouse said. "We have learned a tremendous amount from what these gentlemen have learned in their country, because they operate at 16,000 feet every single day."Nangare singled out the training in the mountains and with "the technological availabilities that the US Army has" as especially valuable.The only other Yudh Abhyas to take place in Alaska was a decade ago, and this year both sides wanted to take advantage of Alaska's mountainous terrain and adverse conditions to "hone their skills and their craft in a different geographical location," Shouse said.The "shared hardships" of training in that area promoted bonding, the US commander said.The day Shouse and Nangare spoke to Insider, both had been snowshoeing in the mountains when the weather "turned really bad on us," Shouse added. "That is just what Alaska offers you."<h2>Partners competing together</h2><div type="image" title="US and Indians soldiers conduct sling-load training with CH-47 Chinook helicopter" height="1294" width="2000" msid="88059625" hostid="261"></div>About 100 troops participated in the first Yudh Abhyas in Alaska, "and this time we have a strength of approximately about 650," Nangare said. "That shows the importance of the training and the exercise."Nangare said there are procedures in place for returning personnel to share their experiences with troops doing similar tasks in India.Those troops may get more first-hand experience next year, when Yudh Abhyas returns to India. US and Indian officials are already planning for that exercise, in which many of the same US soldiers, including Shouse, will participate."I am absolutely going to put our forces on the ground in the Himalayas," Shouse said. "With the new <keyword id="11905238" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="arctic" source="Orion">Arctic</keyword> strategy out and <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/army-looks-to-allies-partners-to-regain-arctic-military-dominance-2021-4" target="_blank" rel="noopener">the Army want[ing] us to be dominant in the Arctic</a>, that takes every bit of time that we have to train in very mountainous and extreme conditions, and the Himalayas is just going to give us another way of doing that."<div type="image" title="US and Indian soldiers use metal detector in Alaska" height="1333" width="2000" msid="88059627" hostid="261"></div>The Himalayas stretch across India's northern frontier, and in recent years Indian forces have had <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/us-intelligence-sharing-with-india-helps-monitor-chinese-military-2020-12" target="_blank" rel="noopener">two major standoffs</a> with Chinese troops <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/china-india-recalibrating-after-doklam-but-future-conflict-possible-2018-10" target="_blank" rel="noopener">in disputed areas</a> on the eastern and western ends of that frontier.Mountain training is a longstanding focus for the Indian army, and previous iterations of Yudh Abhyas in India took place elsewhere in the Himalayas. If next year's exercise is "near disputed territory, that would be a bit of a political signal," Tarapore said.US military officials say the two countries have "<a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/us-intelligence-sharing-with-india-helps-monitor-chinese-military-2020-12" target="_blank" rel="noopener">gotten closer</a>" because of those standoffs, with the US providing intelligence and material support at India's request, including 10,000 sets of cold-weather gear and sleeping bags, the US Army's top civilian official said this week."We would continue to do that and look favorably upon those kinds of requests," Army Secretary Christine Wormuth said at <a href="https://www.csis.org/events/chinas-power-debate-2021-keynote-remarks-secretary-christine-wormuth-us-armys-view-china" target="_blank" rel="noopener">a think-tank</a> event. "We're actually going to be giving them some more next spring."India has been competing and clashing with China for decades — they fought a major border war in 1962 — and it <a href="https://www.ajaishukla.com/2021/01/armys-pivot-to-north.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">has moved</a> independently to bolster its <a href="https://www.defensenews.com/global/asia-pacific/2021/11/08/india-readies-troops-for-another-harsh-winter-on-border-with-china/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">military posture</a>, including <a href="https://www.scmp.com/news/asia/south-asia/article/3154103/china-india-border-dispute-india-deploys-us-made-weaponry" target="_blank" rel="noopener">with US weaponry</a>, along that frontier (<a href="https://www.scmp.com/news/china/military/article/3157794/china-india-border-building-boom-himalayas-beijing-shores" target="_blank" rel="noopener">as has China</a>), so New Delhi isn't "buying into a US program" to counter Beijing, Tarapore said.<div type="image" title="Indian soldiers capture opposition forces in Alaska" height="1333" width="2000" msid="88059629" hostid="261"></div>India has long eschewed formal alliances, seeking "strategic autonomy," nor is the US offering such an alliance to India, "but the partnership is doing everything it can up to that point," Tarapore said."This is an India that is competing with China and a US that is competing with China coming together and realizing that they have a lot of mutual interests in how they can compete with China together," Tarapore added.At the soldier-to-soldier level, the value of Yudh Abhyas and the reward of working together during it was clear, Shouse and Nangare said."I've been in command for about four months now. This has been the single most rewarding exercise that I have been able to be a part of," Shouse said, "We cannot do anything in this world without our partners, and it is exercises like this that strengthens that."In the field and during the command-post exercise, US and Indian soldiers worked "like a homogeneous single entity," Nangare said. "The bonding that has taken place between the troops of both countries is amazing to see."
