The highest number of doctors laid off in the UK over the past five years came from India, a report by Great Britain's <keyword id="245077" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="General-Medical-Council">General Medical Council</keyword> (GMC) revealed. 
 
Over the past five years, one out of every 250 doctors of Indian origin was sacked. The report also says that doctors trained in India but working in the UK are four times more likely to be sacked. 
 Since 2009, 117 doctors trained in India and <keyword id="3001" type="COUNTRY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Pakistan">Pakistan</keyword> had been debarred from practising in Britain. India tops the sacking list, followed by Pakistan, Egypt and <keyword id="6354767" type="COUNTRY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Nigeria">Nigeria</keyword>. More than 95,000 foreign-trained doctors work in the UK, making up nearly 25% of the total, and a majority of them are Indians. 
 
The report follows the British researchers’ call for making the tests more difficult for foreign doctors. According to them, nearly 50% of all foreign doctors in Britain do not possess the requisite skills. 
 The <keyword id="174869" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="University-College-London">University College London</keyword> said it had found a performance gap between international and UK medical graduates, and recommended increasing the pass mark from 63% to 76%.

Senior Indian-origin Twitter executive <keyword id="80387" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="sandeep-pandey" source="Orion">Sandeep Pandey</keyword>, vice president of engineering, is leaving the Parag Agrawal-led platform after more than a decade to join <keyword id="399907" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="meta" source="Orion">Meta</keyword> (formerly Facebook). According to an Insider report, Pandey, who joined Twitter in 2012, will work on Meta's artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning teams. Pandey led the central machine learning, data science and data platform at Twitter. Studied at Carnegie Mellon University, he started his career at IBM India Research Lab and Google. Later, Pandey worked as research scientist at Yahoo, before joining Twitter as staff engineer. At Twitter, he worked in various capacities, like senior director of engineering, head of revenue science and led the brand and video team, according to his LinkedIn profile. Twitter has been seeing several high-profile exits after Tesla CEO <keyword id="6355315" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="elon-musk" source="Orion">Elon Musk</keyword> announced a $44 billion takeover, and then terminated it over the actual number of bots on the platform. <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Facebook-AcquiresAn-Indian-Start-Up-For-The-First-Time/articleshow/28549060.cms">acquired</a> Bangalore-based tech start-up <keyword id="1959708" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Little-Eye-Labs">Little Eye Labs</keyword> and now <keyword id="354776" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="search-giant">search giant</keyword> <keyword id="6355629" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Google">Google</keyword> has picked up a three-year-old web security start-up with India connections. <keyword id="1573524" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Impermium">Impermium</keyword>, Google’s latest <keyword id="30334" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="acquisition">acquisition</keyword>, develops security products for websites and has offices in Bangalore and California. However, the financials of the deal has not been disclosed yet. 
 Besides <keyword id="1573526" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Mark-Risher">Mark Risher</keyword>, the <keyword id="5645" type="POSITION" weightage="80" keywordseo="CEO">CEO</keyword> of Impermium, the company has two Indian co-founders – <keyword id="2025990" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Vish-Ramarao">Vish Ramarao</keyword> (CTO) and <keyword id="2025999" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Naveen-Jamal">Naveen Jamal</keyword>. All three of them were colleagues in <keyword id="6363100" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Yahoo">Yahoo</keyword> but decided to leave the company and started the new venture back in 2011. While Risher and Ramarao are based in California, Jamal is in charge of the Bangalore office. 
 Jamal originally hails from Thanjavur in Tamil Nadu. He had been to the US to pursue higher studies and also worked as a <keyword id="49316" type="POSITION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Software-engineer">software engineer</keyword> in Sift before joining Yahoo in 1998 as a <keyword id="2025975" type="POSITION" weightage="80" keywordseo="principal-engineer">principal engineer</keyword>. Ramarao is from Bangalore but went to the US for higher studies. Before joining Impermium, he led engineering for Yahoo! Mail anti-spam, security and data mining, and was involved in protecting every major component of the Yahoo network from spam, fraud, misuse. 
 Risher helped co-found the business in 2011, quickly picking up $1 million in <keyword id="948731" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="seed-funding">seed funding</keyword> from <keyword id="144381" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Accel-Partners">Accel Partners</keyword>, <keyword id="2026002" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="AOL-Ventures">AOL Ventures</keyword>, <keyword id="2026005" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="Archimedes-Capital">Archimedes Capital</keyword>, <keyword id="307981" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Charles-River-Ventures">Charles River Ventures</keyword>, <keyword id="2026006" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="Embarcadero-Ventures">Embarcadero Ventures</keyword>, <keyword id="2025977" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="Freestyle-Capital">Freestyle Capital</keyword>, <keyword id="2026009" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Greylock-Discovery-Fund">Greylock Discovery Fund</keyword> and <keyword id="2025974" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="Morado-Ventures">Morado Ventures</keyword>, according to a TechCrunch report. In the same year, it raised $8 million in a <keyword id="2026013" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="Series-A-round">Series A round</keyword> led by <keyword id="220416" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Highland-Capital-Partners">Highland Capital Partners</keyword> and supported by Freestyle Capital (which also contributed to the seed round) and Social+Capital Partnership. The start-up claims to have a 300,000 strong client base including key companies such as <keyword id="279713" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Tumblr">Tumblr</keyword>, Pinterest, CNN, ESPN, Typepad and <keyword id="79961" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Washington-Post">Washington Post</keyword>. 
 
Impermium has not detailed its future plans post the acquisition and its site now features just a note from Risher that says:

In an earlier interview with TOI, Risher said that the start-up had built a number of services that worked as a risk-determination system. Impermium calculates the severity of the risk based on parameters like where you accessed the account from, the device software and historical usage pattern of the links you are posting. 
 Prior to buying Impermium, Google acquired <keyword id="813970" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Nest-Labs">Nest Labs</keyword>, the maker of the Nest Learning Thermostat and Protect smoke detector, for $3.2 billion in cash. The latest acquisition is bound to boost the <keyword id="851525" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Internet-giant">Internet giant</keyword> as Impermium specialises in controlling spam, fraud and all kinds of web abuse.

Indian-origin paediatrician <keyword id="15532658" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="angraj-khillan" source="Orion">Angraj Khillan</keyword> from Victoria state has been honoured with the 2023 Australian of the Year award for delivering key healthcare and health education to several Australian communities. <keyword id="2832378" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="khillan" source="Orion">Khillan</keyword>, 56, is the co-founder of the Health Awareness Society of <keyword id="6355478" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="australia" source="Orion">Australia</keyword> (HASA), which dispels myths, taboos and misinformation about health through forums in a range of languages. HASA delivers forums and virtual sessions in English, Hindi, Punjabi, Urdu and Arabic on topics from mental health to Covid-19 vaccinations. "It is an honour, and privilege at the same time it brings a lot of responsibility to me to work harder to cater for the needs of Australian multicultural communities," Khillan told The Australia Today. As a student in <keyword id="3658" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="india" source="Orion">India</keyword>, he sold offerings outside a temple to fund his medical education. After moving to Melbourne in 2010, Khillan worked to raise awareness of domestic violence and dowry abuse. He has played a pivotal role in delivering key healthcare and health education to culturally diverse communities in Victoria, a government release note stated. Indian-origin paediatrician Angraj Khillan wins Australian of the Year award

An Indian-origin <keyword id="6377147" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Zara">Zara</keyword> executive has been named in the $40 million lawsuit filed against the leading Spanish clothing major. 
 
The case filed in the Supreme Court in the state of New York this week is against the company’s alleged salary discrimination, and firing an employee for being "Jewish, American and gay". 
 The case names Zara, and executives <keyword id="102995" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Dilip-Patel">Dilip Patel</keyword> and <keyword id="2885502" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Moises-Costas-Rodriguez">Moises Costas Rodriguez</keyword>. 
 
Patel is the Country Manager for Zara in the US. He works at the brand’s Manhattan office. Rodriguez is the former CEO for Zara USA. He is currently the Director of Expansion for North and South America. 
 
 
The lawsuit mentions that the employee has suffered "hostile work environment, pay discrimination, and unlawful discharge based on his religion, national origin, and sexual orientation". It claims damages in excess of $40 million.

Indian-origin man figures in the $40 million
lawsuit against Zara

India-origin <keyword id="135342" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Pankaj-Patel">Pankaj Patel</keyword> is soon going to join the executive leadership team of global IT giant <keyword id="6390344" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Cisco">Cisco</keyword>, which has restructured its top management recently under the guidance of CEO <keyword id="2168427" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Chuck-Robbins">Chuck Robbins</keyword>. Patel has studied engineering at the Birla Institute of Technology and Science (<keyword id="51724" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="BITS">BITS</keyword>) in India, according to an Economic Times report. 

	Patel, 60, will continue to lead Cisco's development engineers and the company's $36-billion technology portfolio. The Indian-origin engineer, who joined the company in 1996, leads a global team of about 28,000 people. 
 

	He already served the American company as a senior vice-president and general manager for its service provider business. He was responsible for the Cisco IGX product line and software development for all Cisco ATM switches, the company said on its website. 
 Patel joined Cisco through its acquisition of <keyword id="2892807" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="Stratacom">Stratacom</keyword>. Patel also holds a master's degree in electrical engineering from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. 

	He was a founding leader of Cisco’s first multi-service access business unit, developing strategy for access routers and voice-over-packet technology and delivery.

Kumar, known only by his last name, ran the Freshgo store at Gipsy Hill in the British capital for many years. The shopkeeper, in his 40s, was admitted to hospital last week where he died of coronavirus. "Kumar worked tirelessly for years at Freshgo and was liked by all the customers," writes Siobhann Carolan, who set up the fundraising drive on Just Giving two days ago. "He was always helpful, cheerful and considerate at any time of the day or night. The funds raised will go directly to his family to help them through this truly difficult time," she said. Her initial target was hit within three hours and the donations kept mounting over the last few days to hit a total of GBP 5,001 on Tuesday. "This is truly saddening. Kumar was very kind, helpful and with a big smile. He spoke fluent Italian, lived there for a while and I will miss him and we laughed about his time in Italy," wrote Alberto, one of the over 250 donors. "You have worked so hard for so long... Time to rest now you amazing gentleman always with a smile," said Shirley Pollak. Kumar's death has drawn focus on workers across different frontlines in the coronavirus pandemic, as they work on ensuring essential supply chains are maintained. Raj Aggarwal, an Indian-origin store owner from Leicester, died of COVID-19 earlier this month after making a final delivery to Glenfield Hospital in the city. "Next stop Glenfield Hospital, Leicester, dropping off Tea, Coffee and Biscuits for our frontline NHS staff who are doing an amazing job," reads his last social media post from March 27. Aggarwal, an independent retailer, was also a board member of the Association of Convenience Stores, a lobbying group for the sector. "Like many retailers, Raj has been out in his community while coronavirus has been spreading through the country. He's been in stores, dealing with colleagues and the public, out with suppliers to get product in, and supporting local causes," reads the association's tribute. "This is a terrible loss that will be felt personally by many people in our industry, and it should also remind us: there are people putting themselves in harm's way to help the country through these difficult times, and to lose one of them in Raj is a hard thing to comprehend and accept," it adds. Thousands raised for Indian-origin coronavirus victim in UK

The new office aims to carry out <keyword id="16996779" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="NASAs-human-exploration-activities" source="Orion">NASA's human exploration activities</keyword> at the Moon and Mars for the benefit of humanity. "The Moon to Mars Programme Office will help prepare NASA to carry out our bold missions to the Moon and land the first humans on Mars," said NASA Administrator Bill Nelson, in a statement. "The golden age of exploration is happening right now, and this new office will help ensure that NASA successfully establishes a long-term lunar presence needed to prepare for humanity's next giant leap to the Red Planet." As directed by the 2022 NASA Authorization Act, the Moon to Mars Programme Office focuses on hardware development, mission integration, and risk management functions for programmes critical to the agency's exploration approach that uses Artemis missions at the Moon to open a new era of scientific discovery and prepare for human missions to Mars. This includes the Space Launch System rocket, Orion spacecraft, supporting ground systems, human landing systems, spacesuits, Gateway, and more related to deep space exploration. The new office will also lead planning and analysis for long-lead developments to support human Mars missions. The office resides within the Exploration Systems Development Mission Directorate (ESDMD), and Kshatriya, appointed as deputy associate administrator, will report to its Associate Administrator Jim Free. Kshatriya previously served as acting deputy associate administrator for Common Exploration Systems Development, providing leadership and integration across several of the programmes that now fall within the new office. In the new role, Kshatriya is responsible for programme planning and implementation for human missions to the Moon and Mars.A He will direct and lead the programmes to ensure Artemis and Mars planning, development, and operations are consistent with ESDMD requirements, and will serve as the single point of focus for risk management. Kshatriya began his career in the space programme in 2003, working as a software engineer, robotics engineer, and spacecraft operator primarily focused on the robotic assembly of the International Space Station. From 2014 to 2017, he served as a space station flight director, where he led global teams in the operations and execution of the space station during all phases of flight. From 2017 to 2021, he became deputy, and then acting manager, of the ISS Vehicle Office, where he was responsible for sustaining engineering, logistics, and hardware programme management. In 2021, he was assigned to NASA Headquarters in the Exploration Systems Development Mission Directorate as an assistant deputy associate administrator, where he was an integral part of the team that returned a spacecraft designed to carry humans to the Moon during the Artemis I mission. Son of first-generation Indian immigrants to the US, Kshatriya holds a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics from the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, California, and a Master of Arts in Mathematics from The University of Texas at Austin. He has also been decorated with the NASA Outstanding Leadership Medal for actions as the lead flight director for the 50th expedition to the space station, as well as the Silver Snoopy -- an award that astronauts bestow for outstanding performance contributing to flight safety -- for his actions as lead robotics officer for the Commercial Orbital Transportation Services Dragon demonstration mission to the orbiting laboratory. Two Indian-origin researchers at <keyword id="1063768" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Cornell-University-in-New-York">Cornell University in New York</keyword> have created a large <keyword id="2488572" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="computational-system">computational system</keyword> known as '<keyword id="2488571" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="Robo-Brain">Robo Brain</keyword>'. With the help of this giant robot brain, millions of machines across the globe can gain knowledge on human behaviour, language and mannerism. 
‘Robo Brain’ extracts information available on the Internet with the help of computational system extracts. It can interpret natural language text, images and videos. This is how robots gain knowledge. 
 According to lead researcher <keyword id="435030" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ashutosh-Saxena">Ashutosh Saxena</keyword>, an assistant <keyword id="2059841" type="POSITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Professor-of-Computer-Science">professor of computer science</keyword> at <keyword id="31781" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Cornell-University">Cornell University</keyword> in New York, "Our laptops and cell phones have access to all the information we want. If a robot encounters a situation it has not seen before, it can query Robo Brain in the cloud." 
 
With the help of 'Robo Brain', a robot can connect images with videos and texts in order to identify objects that it is dealing with. This helps the wonder machine perform different action through out the day. For instance, if a robot sees a coffee mug then his 'Robo Brain' will run the image, connect it with the object in front of its eyes, inform it of what it is and how it is used. 
 
Aditya Jami, a visiting researcher at Cornell, who designed the large-scale database for the brain, said that 'Robo Brain' will look like a gigantic, branching graph with abilities for multi-dimensional queries.

Indian-origin Scientists Invent 'Robo Brain' To Help Robots Gain Knowledge

A 28-year-old Indian-origin <keyword id="38935" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="fraud" source="Orion">fraud</keyword>ster who targeted elderly and vulnerable victims in a scam impersonating a police officer or a bank official has been sentenced by a <keyword id="6354968" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="London" source="Orion">London</keyword> court to eight years of imprisonment on nine counts of fraud by false representation. <keyword id="18177369" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="kishan-bhatt" source="Orion">Kishan Bhatt</keyword> was sentenced at <keyword id="347034" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="snaresbrook-crown-court" source="Orion">Snaresbrook Crown Court</keyword> on Tuesday, after pleading guilty in November last year at the same court, the <keyword id="157066" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Metropolitan-Police" source="Orion">Metropolitan Police</keyword> said. An investigation by the force's Specialist Economic Crime team found Bhatt had defrauded nine victims out of more than GBP 260,000 in total, besides numerous further attempts that were blocked by financial institutions or jewellers. "Fraud is far from a victimless offence, and the repercussions for the numerous victims involved in this situation extend beyond mere financial loss," said Detective Constable Sarah Cook, from the Met's Economic Crime division. "The emotional toll has been immense, leading to severe distress and devastation for those affected. Without the bank's goodwill gesture, these victims would have been deprived of their life savings," she said. "The outcome demonstrates the unwavering commitment of the Met in relentlessly pursuing individuals like Bhatt who engage in fraudulent activities. Our determination remains resolute in ensuring that such offenders are held accountable and brought to justice," she added. The Met Police were able to identify victims in London and Norfolk, eastern England after a jeweller in London's Hatton Garden area contacted police about an elderly, vulnerable woman attending their shop to buy gold. Bhatt's accomplice Artiom Kiseliov, 35, was sentenced to four-and-a-half-years' imprisonment last year in April on one count of fraud by false representation at Kingston Crown Court, outside London in Kingston Upon Thames. Kiseliov's arrest followed a suspicious jeweller contacting police in relation to a 90-year-old victim who had been contacted by a man claiming to be a police officer who had arrested a male with her bank card. The caller told the old lady she needed to protect her money and to do this she needed to invest in gold and jewellery as fraudsters would not be able to access it this way. She was instructed to buy expensive watches in excess of GBP 90,000 over a two-week period and then Kiseliov attended her home address to collect these on a number of occasions. She was advised that the men would keep them safe for her. In January 2022, Bhatt and Kiseliov drove her to Hatton Garden in London in an attempt to get her to buy gold as she believed she was helping the police with their investigation. The men had told her that the jewellers were corrupt and they would value the gold she bought, which would confirm the corruption. The jewellers asked for identification and told the woman to return another day whilst they completed ID checks and ordered the gold to store. She was driven to further jewellery stores by the fraudsters and made purchases, however, these were still pending when police were alerted and were cancelled by the jewellers. Met Police detectives launched an investigation and identified the vehicle Bhatt and Kiseliov used to transport the victim to these jewellers. Further enquiries obtained a phone number for Bhatt under an alias he was using. The police were able to establish that between September 2020 and May 2022, Bhatt targeted nine victims - aged between 29 and 90 - who were approached whilst he posed as a bank employee, a landlord and a police officer. Once he had gained their trust, he transferred money out of their accounts. The majority of the money has been refunded to the victims by banks, the Met Police said.
