Searches for "moving to Canada" had already started to <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://trends.google.com/trends/explore?date=today%201-m&amp;geo=US&amp;q=move%20to%20canada&amp;hl=en-US">increase during the month</a> leading up to Election Day 2024, per Google Trends."Usually when there's an election cycle, or when people don't like who is elected, Americans in particular want to move to Canada," <a target="_blank" href="https://www.visaplace.com/">VisaPlace</a> CEO Michael Niren, an immigration lawyer with more than 25 years of experience in Canadian migration, told BI.A smaller number of Americans actually follow through on their internet dreams and make the move. According to <a target="_blank" href="https://open.canada.ca/data/en/dataset/f7e5498e-0ad8-4417-85c9-9b8aff9b9eda">immigration data from the Canadian government</a>, 93,095 Americans were granted permanent residency between 2015 and the end of the third quarter of 2024. The number of Americans granted permanent residence has increased almost every year. In 2015, 7,655 people got it; in 2023, 10,640 people did. 2021 saw the largest number: 11,955.Two Americans who recently moved to Canada told BI they did so to escape polarized and divisive politics, escape inadequate healthcare, and feel safer in their communities.While they said their overall quality of life had improved, they found the grass wasn't greener in every arena: There can be long waitlists for medical care, and it's very expensive to buy a home.<h2 id="8b3f63f9-a520-43d6-a1bc-b0b4a1463883">One mover said Canada's schools were better, but its free healthcare was still flawed</h2>Johnson, who primarily wanted to escape American politics, said she discovered some advantages of Canada's schooling system once her children enrolled.In LA, she said, "many of the schools are in trailers instead of actual buildings," but in Canada, "children can go to school and not worry about having a place that is safe or not being in an actual building."Johnson said she and her family had also enjoyed Canada's universal, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.commonwealthfund.org/international-health-policy-center/countries/canada">publicly funded healthcare system</a>, under which citizens and permanent residents get most medically necessary care and medications for free or at a very low cost.She added that there were some frustrations, including <a target="_blank" href="https://www.fraserinstitute.org/studies/waiting-your-turn-wait-times-for-health-care-in-canada-2022">lengthy waiting periods</a> for medical care. "During the pandemic, doctors couldn't see patients as regularly and non-emergency procedures were postponed, so there's a backlog," she said.Niren, who has lived in both the US and Canada, voiced similar concerns. He said his own mother, who needs a hip replacement, was on a waitlist for 18 months."There are people who have to fly to other countries — including the United States — to get cancer treatment because it takes too long," he said. "In the US, you can get a specialist appointment in two days."Niren also said Canadians paid elevated taxes to support such a comprehensive healthcare system."People call it free healthcare — it's not free," he said. "It's very expensive because you're paying through the taxes."<h2 id="8af511bd-4cef-4447-96f8-e2383dcbf3f4">An American found relief from the US's violence and opioid crises in Canada</h2>Chris Ouellet, 40, left Portland, Oregon, for Victoria, British Columbia, in 2020. It wasn't his first-choice destination, he said, but he ended up finding the peace and safety he was looking for.He and his partner had planned to move to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/americans-moving-to-new-zealand-california-nature-quality-of-life-2023-8">Wellington, New Zealand</a>, but were unable to because of pandemic border lockdowns. A lot of the characteristics Ouellet was looking for in New Zealand, he said, he found in British Columbia."We love the Pacific Northwest, and Canada is not far up the road," Ouellet told BI. "It's very similar weather, and they have a lot of the things that we wanted and what we were looking for in New Zealand, which was a lower cost of education, socialized healthcare, and politics that weren't so incredibly polarizing."Ouellet, who works for the provincial government at the Ministry of Health in British Columbia, spoke glowingly of Portland but did point out the "pretty bad" violence and opioid crises he witnessed in the US overall. Before Portland, he and his partner lived in Chicago. The violence they would read about or see on their daily commutes prompted them to move west and eventually out of the country altogether, he said.He hasn't had the same worries in Canada."In British Columbia, the regulations for being able to own a gun are extremely tight," he said. "When you're out in public, and you hear a noise, no one runs, no one checks over their shoulder, no one thinks that it could possibly be gun violence."He added that there was still an opioid crisis in British Columbia, but it wasn't as striking as it is in Portland. Ouellet said that in the three years he'd lived in British Columbia, he'd seen one syringe on the ground, compared with Portland, where he saw dozens a day.Ouellet said he had no regrets about moving to British Columbia, but <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/canada-housing-crisis-bubble-imploding-real-estate-prices-rent-decline-2023-11">Canada's housing crisis</a> have so far sidelined his dreams of homeownership."The house that we had in Portland was three bedrooms, 2 ½ baths. It was about 1,800 square feet, and we bought it for $265,000. You can't find a place for that price here," he said. "Most condos are around $500,000 to $900,000. Some Americans think moving to Canada will solve all their problems. But Canada has its own issues.

Sixty-six percent of <keyword id="23012810" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="road-traffic-deaths" source="keywords">road traffic deaths</keyword> in <keyword id="19952305" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Southeast-Asia" source="keywords">Southeast Asia</keyword> are of <keyword id="20239488" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="pedestrians" source="keywords">pedestrians</keyword>, motorized <keyword id="20937113" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="two-wheeler-riders" source="keywords">two-wheeler riders</keyword>, and <keyword id="20007750" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="cyclists" source="keywords">cyclists</keyword>, while the highest traffic fatalities in India are among two- and three-wheeler riders, according to the latest <keyword id="20738786" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="WHO-report" source="keywords">WHO report</keyword>. The "WHO South-East Asia Regional Status Report on <keyword id="20187029" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="road-safety" source="keywords">Road Safety</keyword>" was launched during "Safety 2024", the 15th World Conference on Injury Prevention and Safety Promotion, 2024. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), globally, 30% of reported road traffic deaths involved users of powered two- and three-wheelers. Occupants of four-wheeled vehicles make up 25% of the deaths and pedestrians account for 21 %. Cyclists represent 5% of the deaths. The remaining 20% include occupants of large vehicles, heavy goods vehicles, and other or unknown user types. "In the WHO Southeast Asia Region, the share of reported road traffic deaths is 46% for users of powered two- and three-wheelers, 12 for occupants of four-wheeled vehicles, 17% for pedestrians, 3% for cyclists and 22% for others. In all these countries, vulnerable road users (pedestrians, motorised two-wheeler users and bicyclists) constitute 66% of the total reported road traffic deaths," the report said. "Drivers or riders of two and three-wheelers constitute the highest proportion among all road user categories in India (45.1%), Maldives (100 %), Myanmar (47%) and Thailand (51.4%)," it added. The WHO noted that no country in the South Asian region had achieved the target of reducing its estimated road traffic deaths by 50 %. However, considerable reduction in the WHO's estimated road traffic deaths occurred in the Maldives and Thailand, where estimated road traffic deaths decreased by 46.2% and 41.7 %, respectively. On the contrary, reported road traffic deaths in the region increased by 15 % in the 2010-2021 period. At the country level, no member state of the Southeast Asia Region with more than 10 million population has reported a decrease in road traffic deaths during this period. "However, it should be noted that the reported number of road traffic deaths in Thailand reduced by 22.9% between 2016 and 2021. The estimated road traffic deaths too increased in Bangladesh, India and Nepal during the period 2010-2021 by 23 %, 2% and 25%, respectively," the report said. Etienne Krug, director of the WHO's Department for Social Determinants of Health, said road traffic crashes were a major crisis of the 21st century. "...a large proportion of people who die in road crashes are those who cannot afford to buy a car. This is urgent time to take action. The report reveals that the crisis is huge but we need to understand and act with determination that prevention is possible and needs strict enforcement," he said. The three-day conference is being hosted by the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Delhi; George Institute for Global Health in collaboration with the All India Institute for Medical Sciences (AIIMS), National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences (NIMHANS) and co-sponsored by WHO. "To reduce inequities, we must acknowledge that injuries disproportionately impact vulnerable communities -- because we are far behind in addressing real problems with real solutions. Lived experience shows how policy shapes differential exposure, risk, and outcomes, underscoring the urgent need for change," said Jagnoor Jagnoor, head of injury division at George Institute for Global Health. During the conference, the international experts are uniting with a shared goal of "building a safer future for all: Equitable and sustainable strategies for injury and violence prevention". The conference will focus on five key themes -- improving coordination and collaboration among stakeholders, strengthening capacity for research and practice, integrating injury prevention with global health agendas such as sustainability and equity, empowering communities, and promoting informed policymaking.

Pedestrians, cyclists, two-wheeler riders constitute 66% of road fatalities in Southeast Asia, says a WHO report

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Canada's First Nations are breaking ground on historic housing and community development projects.</li><li>The country's most significant developments are happening in Vancouver, its most expensive city. </li></ul>Much like in the US, Canada is experiencing a severe housing affordability crisis, and the country's indigenous communities, known as First Nations, have long suffered disproportionately from inadequate housing.But Canada's indigenous communities are fighting to address the issue. In Vancouver alone, several First Nations are leading a major push to build housing on indigenous-owned land, in some cases partnering with the federal government to build entirely new communities that will house tens of thousands of people, while generating wealth for generations of First Nations members to come.Ground has already been broken on <a target="_blank" href="https://senakw.com/">one of these projects</a>, 11 towers with 6,000 homes being built by the Squamish Nation on a 12-acre piece of land near downtown Vancouver, Canada's most expensive real-estate market. The Squamish people were <a target="_blank" href="https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/british-columbia/little-known-history-of-squamish-nation-land-in-vancouver-1.5104584">forced off of this land</a> in the early 20th century and finally won back their ancestral territory about 20 years ago.Because the development, named Sen̓áḵw, is on Squamish Nation reserve land, it's not subject to the same governmental land-use regulations as land elsewhere in the city, allowing for a speedier approval and construction process. The first three towers are set to be completed in November 2025, and the rest of the development is scheduled to be done in about eight years.Mindy Wight, CEO of the Squamish development group building Sen̓áḵw, called it "the creation of a modern Squamish village" in an interview with Business Insider.Wight sees Sen̓áḵw and other indigenous developments as particularly innovative ways to solve the region's housing crisis."While the Nation benefits from generating wealth and prosperity for its members, it's actually solving some of those challenges that are facing Vancouver," Wight said.She noted that about 20% of the units will be designated as affordable housing, and 250 units will be reserved for Nation members.The new housing is much needed for Vancouverites, especially First Nation members. Canada's federal auditor general recently <a target="_blank" href="https://nationalpost.com/news/canada/auditor-general-slams-governments-failure-first-nations-housing?taid=65f9e43d90ad1e000175d3a5&amp;utm_campaign=trueanthem&amp;utm_medium=social&amp;utm_source=twitter">condemned</a> a "distressing and persistent pattern of failure" by federal programs designed to support First Nations housing and infrastructure, among other services. She said she was "completely discouraged" by the number of First Nations families forced to live in unsafe or inadequate housing.<div type="image" title="The site of the Sen̓áḵw development under construction in late February 2024 in Vancouver, Canada." height="727" width="971" msid="108820264" hostid="261" sizebytes="85718"></div>In a separate effort, three First Nations — the Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh peoples — came together to create a partnership to develop six different pieces of land in Vancouver and the surrounding area. The value of the land alone, which has been acquired by the Nations over the last decade, now exceeds $4 billion, according to Brennan Cook, vice president of the MST Development Corporation, the real estate company representing the three First Nations."What they're doing here is groundbreaking, it really hasn't been done elsewhere," Cook said.In two major projects in Vancouver, the MST Development Corporation joined with the Canadian federal government to buy two large pieces of land in the city that will be developed into entirely new communities, with schools, libraries, daycares, public space, and thousands of units of housing.One 90-acre planned development, called Jericho Lands, will house up to 18,000 people — more than doubling the area's current population. The project is moving along — the Vancouver City Council <a target="_blank" href="https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/british-columbia/jericho-lands-policy-statement-1.7094161">unanimously approved</a> its policy statement in January, greenlighting the creation of more finalized plans. The other development, Heather Street Lands, a 21-acre site in central Vancouver, will have about 2,600 homes.The Nations want the developments to be an investment that reaps returns over time, so it will offer 99-year leases to homeowners, rather than selling off any of its property."The idea is to create a legacy economic engine for the Nations to provide for their community members, whether that be the preservation and retention of culture, art, language, healthcare, any other kind of employment training procurement opportunities," Cook said.Elisa Campbell, a vice president at the Canada Lands Company, the arm of the federal government partnering with the three First Nations, called the Jericho and Heather Street Lands projects "transformational" and "globally exceptional.""These are not just properties, these are communities that are in the broader context of a city," Campbell told Business Insider. "These are city-building moments."But the pre-construction approval process has been slow because the land isn't First Nations reserve land, and is subject to all of the government's land-use regulations. Heather Lands has been underway for a decade already and the project still isn't done with the municipal approvals process. Jericho Lands is expected to take between 20 and 30 years to complete.The housing projects aren't the only major developments underway on indigenous land in Canada. Just off the coast of Vancouver, the Malahat First Nation is <a target="_blank" href="https://dailyhive.com/vancouver/malahat-first-nation-vancouver-island-battery-manufacturing-facility">building a 100,000-square-foot battery plant</a> in partnership with the company Energy Plug Technologies on the Nation's land. The factory will create in-demand lithium-iron-phosphate battery storage and create about 100 new jobs.<h2>NIMBY pushback</h2>Of course, the housing developments have <a target="_blank" href="https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/british-columbia/kits-point-judicial-review-vancouver-squamish-nation-senakw-1.6608352">faced pushback</a> from some community members. Sen̓áḵw <a target="_blank" href="https://vancouversun.com/news/local-news/b-c-court-rejects-challenge-to-huge-squamish-nation-housing-project-in-vancouver">survived a legal challenge</a> last fall when a British Columbia Supreme Court judge rejected a claim that the local community wasn't sufficiently engaged in the planning process.Some of the development's critics have attempted to weaponize Native American philosophy against it. In one case, former Vancouver city councilor Gordon Price argued that the First Nations cannot call themselves "land defenders" when they're building concrete high rises. "There's a big gap between that and an indigenous way of building," Price, who is not a member of the First Nations, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-8mf-t2tqSw">told CBC Vancouver</a> last year.Supporters reject Price's argument, noting that building housing and sustainable communities are both in the best interests of the First Nations and the broader city. Bates College environmental studies professor Tyler Harper has called this tendency for non-indigenous Canadians and Americans to stereotype indigenous communities as conservationists "sentimental racism.""Indigenous people are reduced to vehicles for timeless, pre-historical knowledge – wish fulfillment for white progressives dreaming of a prelapsarian age before capital and industry," he <a target="_blank" href="https://twitter.com/Tyler_A_Harper/status/1759636229052625197">wrote</a> recently on X."Canadians aren't used to seeing Indigenous people occupy places that are socially, economically or geographically valuable, like Sen̓áḵw," indigenous writer Michelle Cyca <a target="_blank" href="https://macleans.ca/society/sen%cc%93a%e1%b8%b5w-vancouver/">wrote recently</a> in MacLean's. While some Native American tribes have spearheaded significant <a target="_blank" href="https://tucson.com/news/local/business/pascua-yaqui-tribe-opens-first-master-planned-community-in-tucson/article_fd4f5ade-e83d-11ed-a4b2-e301f69dc840.html#:~:text=The%20Pascua%20Yaqui%20Tribe%20has%20finished%20its%20first%20master%20planned,The%20Homes%20at%20Yaqui%20Square">housing projects</a>, most indigenous-owned land in the US isn't in the most valuable housing markets. Other economic development efforts in the US have been largely focused on the gaming industry, including <a target="_blank" href="https://www.nber.org/digest/feb03/social-and-economic-impact-native-american-casinos">casinos</a>."The big picture problem is that the legacy of Indian removal is that it forced so many tribes onto marginal land that they are excluded from some of the highest value areas of the country," Alex Armlovich, a senior housing-policy analyst at the Niskanen Center, told Business Insider.Pro-housing and development advocates like Armlovich are "open-mouthed in awe of just what an incredible thing they're working on in Vancouver," Armlovich added.Pro-housing advocates say economic development projects on Indian land are possible if local and state governments take action to restore ancestral land in cities to tribes that are interested in development, or otherwise work with Native American tribes to invest in industrial development."At a time when NIMBYism and permitting hangups are threatening America's push for green industrial policy, a win-win alliance with Native American tribes could be exactly what this nation needs," economist Noah Smith, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.noahpinion.blog/p/at-least-five-interesting-things-8dd">wrote recently</a>. "Instead of demanding Native Americans be guardians of a pastoral past, we could enlist their aid in leading us into a green technological future."Housing developments are particularly attractive at a time when so many parts of the country are facing a shortage of homes and, as a result, skyrocketing housing costs."If a city wanted to get serious about land acknowledgments, and facilitate development, and house a tribe on its historic lands, that would be pretty incredible to do it in a way that's positive for everybody," Armlovich said.

Recognising the significance of this mission, the Indian government allocated an additional Rs 111 billion to Gaganyaan, bringing the program closer to launch. ISRO’s cautious approach includes a series of uncrewed test flights to evaluate critical systems. An uncrewed test flight, G1, is scheduled for December and will carry a humanoid robot named Vyomitra to test reentry, parachute deployment, and splashdown capabilities. Following G1, three more uncrewed missions will complete this rigorous testing phase. The mission’s crew, including Indian Air Force test pilot Shubhanshu Shukla, has been undergoing intensive training both in India and abroad, including a stint with Axiom Space at the International Space Station (ISS), where Shukla is training under former NASA astronaut Peggy Whitson. Meanwhile, ISRO’s ambitious roadmap also includes future goals to land astronauts on the moon by 2040 and potentially establish a moon base before 2050. Following Friday's operation, specialist teams from the Navy undertook a thorough sanitisation and seaworthiness check of the fishing vessel in order to escort it to a safe area for resuming normal fishing activities, according to an official statement shared by a Navy spokesperson. The Navy said late on Friday evening that it was engaged in an operation to free the fishing vessel from pirates. Nine armed pirates had reportedly boarded the vessel. The hijacked vessel was intercepted on Thursday, the Navy said. "INS Sumedha intercepted FV 'Al Kambar' during early hours of Friday and was joined subsequently by the guided missile frigate INS Trishul," it said. "After more than 12 hours of intense coercive tactical measures as per the SOPs, the pirates on board the hijacked fishing vessel were forced to surrender. The crew, comprising 23 Pakistani nationals, have been safely rescued," the Navy added. The fishing vessel was approximately 90 nm (nautical miles) southwest of Socotra when the pirates reportedly boarded it, it said. The Indian Navy said it remains committed to ensuring maritime security in the region and the safety of seafarers, "irrespective of the nationalities".
