You cannot start blaming life for what it does," he added. "I cry a lot in my bathroom": Shah Rukh on dealing with failures

<ul><li><keyword id="600792" type="General" weightage="40" keywordseo="bookmyshow" source="Orion">BookMyShow</keyword>’s survey shows that India’s favourite entertainment choice is watching movies on the ‘Big Screen’.</li><li> The CineFiles survey says that 90% respondents pick the latest movie release in the theatre, as their go-to option for out-of-home leisure experiences while 63% have movies on their mind at least once every fortnight.</li><li>Not only is the movie and its storyline important, cinephiles are also very picky about seats.</li></ul> The charm of Shah Rukh Khan can only come alive on the silver screen. Movie studios and multiplex chains, who were a worried lot only last year with multiple flops on the big screen, can now take heart because Indians are not done with the cinema experience. The love for cinema is still as strong as it used to be in India pre-pandemic and the success of big budget larger-than-life movies like <keyword id="1519" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="pathan" source="Orion">Pathan</keyword> and <keyword id="6363925" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="jawan" source="Orion">Jawan</keyword> are proof of that. Moreover, movies like <keyword id="7741791" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="tiger-3" source="Orion">Tiger 3</keyword>, Dunki and Project K, all with big budgets, are in the release pipeline. In other words, the onslaught of OTT and web series on theatres, especially after the pandemic broke out, seems to be over and hasn’t dulled the romance of the silver screen is the key takeaway from entertainment platform BookMyShow’s consumer survey. The report, titled ‘The CineFiles,’ has found that 98% Indians believe cinematic magic can only be brought alive on the big screen with a third of them attributing it to certain directors, themes, visual effects (VFX) amongst others. In fact, the preferred entertainment out-of-home option for 90% respondents is catching the latest movie release in the theatre amongst other leisure activities such as shopping, live gigs, adventure outings and more. With 63% having movies on their mind at least once every fortnight, the cinematic experience is not yet on the wane. And this is true for cinephiles across the length and breadth of the country, with the younger GenZ and Millennial cohorts thinking of the big screen experience for their movie watching outing every week. The survey was conducted across 5,000 respondents, of which 41% were GenZ and 59% were Millennials and GenX. The respondents were spread across 650 towns and cities. According to Ashish Saksena, COO - Cinemas - at BookMyShow, “The enduring love for movies over the years remains unshaken. First day, first shows continue as a sacred tradition for many fans, inspiring cheers, whistles and endless applause at the sight of beloved stars on the big screen. The film industry's tenacity and adaptability shine through its continual evolution. As an enabler to this world of movies on the big screen, it brings us immense joy to engage with and cater to both a burgeoning younger audience and devoted fans across generations, united in their love for this timeless form of entertainment.” Indian cinephiles also happen to be quite the planners with 74% keeping an eye out for movies that resonate with them and plan ahead, at least three days in advance, while 26% still prefer a spontaneous dash to the latest flick. It is not just watching the movie that matters, as 74% cinephiles said they were particular about getting a seat of their choice when watching a movie in the theatre and therefore plan ahead while booking tickets. The key determinants for choosing to step out for a movie experience on the big screen for these consumers remain the storyline, the cast and director, reviews and ratings and the trailer’s impact on them. The survey shows that 43% Mumbaikars choose storyline as the most critical trigger for them to catch a movie in a theatre, significantly higher than other cities., while 38% Delhi-ites rank reviews and ratings highest to determine and decide the film to watch on the big screen. For 32% Bengaluru-eans, the director helming the movie is the most important factor in their decision to watch a movie on the silver screen rather than the movie being a blockbuster release or its trailer previews which are of significantly lower importance. The decision made by the public continues to determine that ‘Content is King’. The first day, first show mania makes a comeback just like the good ol’ times across the board with 35% GenZs, in particular, preferring the early bird experience. Call it the pandemic effect if you will but 36% of GenZ and Millennial audiences opt to watch a movie on the big screen to find an escape from stress and responsibilities, disconnect from reality and fully engage in the immersive experience! Seasoned GenX cinephiles on the other hand, give a high importance to the cast of the movie and recommendations from family and friends before going ahead for the cinematic ride!

Indians shed their Silver Screen hesitation as big budget movies bring audiences back

However, things were challenging for a large part of the year. With many of us stuck within the four walls of our house for the most part of the year, OTT platforms sometimes became the only source of entertainment in our lives. A recent joint report by industry body CII and Boston Consulting Group (BCG) stated that the Indian OTT sector is currently in the scaling stage with strong subscription growth and high investment in premium as well as original content. The Indian OTT sector is one of the most competitive amongst emerging markets with over 40 players. While there have been debates about more and more people moving away from TV, Mandeep Kohli, Managing Director and Partner, Boston Consulting Group India states that we are still some time away from that happening at a large scale in India. “The share of traditional media is slowly declining with increased digital adoption but there is still high headroom for penetration with only 54% of Indian households having a pay TV connection compared to more than 70% in China. For many households, TV continues to be the center of the home and a significant part of family time,” said Kohli, Managing Director and Partner, Boston Consulting Group India. The report further stated that the industry is at a scaling stage currently and has the potential to become a $13-15 billion industry by 2030. The category has grown at an estimated 30-35% in its user base and more than 50% in paid subscriptions over the last two years. But these growth rates are not sustainable in the long run. Platforms will have to look for offerings that are both compelling and distinctive, to get new subscribers in a category that will continue to grow, but at more modest levels of 15-20% per annum. Crossover content, be it Indian (such as Jai Bhim) or foreign (such as Squid Game or Money Heist), will play an important role in this regard. The language barrier has been broken considerably by the OTT medium, and with dubbing and subtitles available in many languages for all major shows and films now, platforms cannot stick to single-language, homogenous offerings anymore. We can expect more language-led experimentation, both in content acquisition and presentation."

successes in the recent past extends beyond Hollywood, Bollywood and Telugu cinema. The recent months have seen a lot of traction from regional movies — extending beyond the South movies. Punjabi movie Carry on Jetta 3, starring Gippy Grewal and Jaswinder Bhalla, became the first movie to cross the ₹100 crore mark in worldwide collections even as it grossed over half of that in India. A Marathi movie — which also boasts of an all-female lead starring Rohini Hattangadi and Baipan Bhari Deva — has also grossed ₹89.6 crore Added to that, many other recent Hindi releases like Satyaprem Ki Katha also came close to becoming superhits – signalling good times for movie makers, theatre owners and investors of PVR. The stock of PVR ran up by 22% in the last three months, and analysts expect better times ahead. “We continue to reiterate our positive stance on multiplexes over the medium/long-term. PVR INOX continues its focus on expanding F&amp;B offerings (especially for INOX chain) and recently introduced F&amp;B items starting at ₹99, gaining good traction. Ticket synergy benefits shall likely kick in from upcoming quarters while the F&amp;B synergy benefits are already as per plans,” said Nuvama. More movies, fewer OTTs The pipeline of big movies in the coming months is also full — with Ayushmann Khurrana’s Dream Girl 2, Hollywood movie, Grand Turismo, and Malayalam movie, King of Kotha, in August. In September, Shah Rukh Khan who is riding high on the success of Pathaan will release yet another movie Jawan. Conjuring universe movie ‘The Nun 2’ will also release next month along with yet another Prabhas starrer, Salaar Part 1. Added to that, the biggest competitor of theatres, the OTT, is slashing budgets, forcing couch surfers to step out. “Recent Hindi films are hinting towards a revival, and we expect international OTTs to cut India budget by 20–30% in FY24, both of which bode well for PVR INOX,” says Nuvama.

The actor who completes 20 years in the industry this year, reminisced about times when movies were heavily aspirational, shot abroad etc. Actor <keyword id="6359106" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="nawazuddin-siddiqui" source="Orion">Nawazuddin Siddiqui</keyword> had also addressed this issue in the past, refusing to accept that he had ‘unconventional looks’, claiming that 80% of India looks like him. “That’s true. Most of the country looks like Nawaz and me. I was once offered a movie character who lived in New York, I refused saying, I look nothing like them. Those were aspirational times, now it’s time for realism,” Bajpayee said. ‘Son of the soil’ heroes are finding a place in the hearts of audiences of today, as seen with the rip-roaring success of Gadar 2. “Its success is not because of Gadar 1 which came decades back. Many people in their 20s are watching it. It’s just that heroes should come from the masses and the audience. And, stories where common-man is the setting should be told,” Bajpayee said. ‘Mood of audience is changing’ Indian cinema has been transforming with movies like Kantara and more which are more rooted and local — and are gaining success too. “The more local a movie is, the more universal it is. But mainstream cinema tends to paint in broad strokes,” commented Anupama Chopra, a popular film critic. Most Indian movies, experts noted, are either potboilers or indulgent films which attract a niche audience which make distributors and producers develop cold feet, noted Bajpayee. He urged film makers to be less indulgent and choose middle-of-the-road cinema. Whether it’s the impact of OTT or the complexity of GenZ preferences, the mood of the audience has changed, experts noted at the panel discussion. The audience’s mood is scattered, with strong story backed-movies and potboilers with drama and emotion finding equal amounts of success. “If you see RRR, amidst all the larger-than-life stunts, the core of it is human emotion. Stories should empathize with the audience, create excitement with thrill and drama,” explained Bajpayee. Yet another fear that most filmmakers face is that the youth is getting disconnected from the large screens and there is a lot of fatigue in the world of entertainment. The younger audiences love their ‘shorts’ and more, and it takes a lot to bring them back to the big screens. Pratik Gandhi who is best known for portraying Harshad Mehta in the web series Scam 1992 said that movies that are rooted in soil always find their audience.
