Even in this age of jet travel and space tourism, highways hold an irresistible charm for travellers out to have an up, close and personal experience of the wide roads stretching ahead for miles, uninterrupted views of a breathtaking landscape, the occasional flyways and the not-so-familiar villages and towns rushing by. It’s even better than chugging along the countryside in a train. You can stop any time you want – to sample some chatpati chaat and a steaming cuppa of chai at a roadside dhaba; to talk to people; to take a dekko at local interests or simply laze an hour or two in shine or rain with the greens around you and the fresh smell of soil floating in the air. 
 
Now that our <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Chugging-Up-7-Mesmerising-Mountain-Train-RidesIn-India/articleshow/24288850.cms">train series</a> is over (but we promise to bring you more as soon as new and exotic routes come up), we are back with a more exciting roadmap of <keyword id="168020" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="expressways">expressways</keyword> that criss-cross the entire country, connecting the four metros and many of the Tier I cities, and going much beyond the urban landscape. Infrastructure development in India has undergone a sea change over the past few years and the country currently boasts the <keyword id="2034191" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Second-largest-road-network">second largest road network</keyword> in the world, with a road length of over 4,689,842 km, as per 2013 data from the <keyword id="6404450" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Ministry-of-Road-Transport-and-Highways">Ministry of Road Transport and Highways</keyword>. 
 Starting from FY2012-13, the <keyword id="44734" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Indian-Government">Indian government</keyword> will be also putting $17 billion over the next five years, being sourced through public-private partnership (<keyword id="6361580" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="PPP">PPP</keyword>) road projects. This will be used by the <keyword id="87432" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="National-Highways-Authority-of-India">National Highways Authority of India</keyword> (<keyword id="49448" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="nhai">NHAI</keyword>) for the planned series of <keyword id="174913" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="BOT">BOT</keyword> (build, operate and transfer) highways. In spite of several bottlenecks, the NHAI has set up impressive targets and aims to develop 20 km/day, in a bid to fast-track the country’s <keyword id="2034194" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Road-network-expansion">road network expansion</keyword>. 
 As of July 2013, <keyword id="6373156" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="National-Highways">national highways</keyword> account for 79,116 km, connecting all major cities and state capitals. Expressways, however, differ a bit in the sense they are controlled-access highways like the <keyword id="610047" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="freeways">freeways</keyword> or <keyword id="1333990" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="motorways">motorways</keyword> or autobahnen in the US and Europe, essentially designed for high-speed traffic. As of now, most of the expressways in India are 6-8 lane <keyword id="120837" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="toll-roads">toll roads</keyword> and cover a total distance of nearly 1,208.19 km. India expects to add another 3,530 km of expressways by 2014 as projects under construction get completed. <ul class="summary-list"><li>I've lived in <keyword id="11922506" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="manchester" source="Orion">Manchester</keyword>, <keyword id="11903129" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="england" source="Orion">England</keyword>, for 14 years — <a href="https://www.timeout.com/news/revealed-the-cheapest-cities-to-live-in-the-world-in-2022-010422">Time Out</a> named it the cheapest <keyword id="11899688" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="city" source="Orion">city</keyword>.</li><li>The location of the city is perfect for <keyword id="11896628" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="travel" source="Orion">travel</keyword>, and there are plenty of transportation options.</li></ul>Time Out Index named Manchester <a href="https://www.timeout.com/news/revealed-the-cheapest-cities-to-live-in-the-world-in-2022-010422">the cheapest city in the world</a> in 2022, and I've lived in the bustling <a href="https://www.insider.com/surprising-things-about-moving-from-us-to-uk">English spot</a> since I was 6 or 7 years old. The Index surveyed 27,000 city-dwellers in 2021 — one question was, "Would you describe your city as expensive?" Most Manchester locals didn't think it cost a lot to live here, and I can certainly see why. Here's what it's really like in the city, and why I think it's the perfect place to live and visit:<h2>Housing costs much less than London, even if it's slowly becoming more expensive</h2><div type="image" title="the back of a house with a colorful mural in manchester" height="360" width="480" msid="90185859" hostid="261"></div>If you wanted to buy a house in Manchester, it'd <a href="https://www.rightmove.co.uk/house-prices/manchester.html">cost you roughly</a> 275,000 pounds, or about $360,000, for a semi-detached place.If you're looking to rent, then the price depends on where you want to live.<a href="https://www.simplybusiness.co.uk/knowledge/articles/2020/01/average-rent-in-manchester/">On average</a>, a one-bedroom flat in the city center costs 750 pounds, or just under $1,000, a month, but outside the city center, it's closer to £540 a month. <h2>The location is ideal for travel around England and abroad</h2>Manchester's location is superb.It's well-served by motorways and trains that easily connect you to the <a href="https://www.insider.com/american-living-in-england-heres-what-i-dont-miss-about-the-us">rest of the country</a>.Liverpool (where my University is) is only 40 minutes away by car and under an hour by train. And if you want to get to London, the two-hour train on the West Coast Line is your best bet.You can also <a href="https://www.insider.com/things-you-should-never-do-on-planes-flight-attendant-2022-2">catch a flight</a> to pretty much anywhere in the world from Manchester International Airport. One of the reasons my family moved here is because we can easily take our yearly summer holidays to Pakistan.<h2>Public transport is excellent, especially the Metrolink</h2><div type="image" title="an outside public transportation station in manchester" height="1190" width="784" msid="90185862" hostid="261"></div>Within Manchester, <a href="https://www.insider.com/underground-subway-london-american-subway-comparison-2018-5">public transport</a> is exceptional.Personally, I'm a huge fan of the Metrolink — a tram network that can take you most places in and slightly outside the city. It's simple to use, clean and efficient, and a lot faster than taking the bus or walking.The price of your journey varies as the Metrolink is divided into zones.To get from my tram-stop into town costs me £3.80, about $5, which is a little bit expensive, especially since prices went up in 2019. But the city is well-served by the service.Buses are good, too, but can be very busy — especially my usual bus route, 43, which is known as the busiest bus route in Manchester. During term time, it's sometimes impossible to find a seat with the university students getting the bus to and from the University of Manchester. A single bus ticket costs between £1.25 and £2.00, but multi-ride passes can come to be cheaper.Taxis are a popular mode of transport. You can grab an Uber, but we've always used the local Kingsway Taxi as a cheaper and more reliable option.Cycling is also big in the city — made safer by added bike lanes over the years.<h2>When it comes to food, you're spoiled for choice in Manchester</h2><h2><div type="image" title="plate of highly garnished french toast on a plate from a restaurant in manchester" height="433" width="576" msid="90185865" hostid="261"></div></h2>As a Muslim, it's very easy to go out and have dinner because there are so many halal options.If you want authentic curry, the two areas to visit are Rusholme's Curry Mile and Longsight.In Longsight, you can get the best Pakistani traditional breakfast from Nafees Sweet Centre. On the Curry Mile, I'd suggest starting off with food from Jilani's or MyLahore Manchester, followed by South Asian snacks and tea from Chit 'n' Chaat.Prices are pretty decent — most meals are under £10 — and portion sizes are good, too.If you're looking for a lighter lunch with friends, Didsbury and Chorlton are two great suburban areas to dine in. They're easily accessible from town via bus or tram, and they cater to a lot of tastes. For example, a very famous breakfast place, Caramello of Didsbury, serves everything from <a href="https://www.insider.com/trying-the-trick-to-make-french-toast-better-review-photos">French toast</a> to full English breakfasts.In Chorlton, I also recommend going to Beech Road, which has great food and a wide range of independent shops where you can do everything from buy clothes to make your own pottery. Central Manchester offers an eclectic mix of high-street restaurants (I love a good Wagamamas), but the local Scene Indian Kitchen is a firm family favorite and Evelyn's Cafe &amp; Bar in the Northern Quarter does a really good shakshuka.<h2>There's plenty to do, from exploring history to catching a show</h2><div type="image" title="the downtown skyline in manchester" height="562" width="749" msid="90185867" hostid="261"></div>Manchester Central Library, a must-see, is a stone's throw away from Beetham Tower, the tallest tower in Manchester.The library is free to enter and has an impressive reading room if you want to work. Beetham Tower houses a mix of high-end restaurants, residential apartments, and a Hilton hotel. <div type="image" title="theater showing book of morman musical in manchester" height="561" width="748" msid="90185870" hostid="261"></div>The city is also home to museums and galleries, such as the Manchester Art Gallery (free entry), the Science and Industry Museum (also free), the Football Museum (paid), and the People's History Museum (free). Booking time slots beforehand is recommended for all. If you want to spend the afternoon in nature, the historic Fletcher Moss Park and Botanical Gardens are free and stunning.And if you want to visit the theater in the evening or attend an orchestra, head to Lowry Theatre in Salford Quays, the Palace Theatre, the Royal Exchange Theatre, or HOME.<h2>Last but definitely not least, football is a huge draw (even though I'm not a fan)</h2>I can't really talk about Manchester without mentioning football (soccer, for Americans). The city is home to two Premier League clubs: Manchester City and Manchester United. You can visit the Etihad and Old Trafford stadiums quite easily by public transport, and the latter even has a very impressive museum to check out.

 Sri Lanka has leased a Chinese-built port located near the world’s busiest east-west shipping route to a Chinese firm in 2017 for 99 years in a bid to recover from the heavy burden of repaying a Chinese loan to build the facility. Hambantota port is part of Beijing’s Belt and Road Initiative that stretches from Chinese waters to the Persian Gulf. In March this year, China also agreed to provide a <a href="https://www.scmp.com/news/asia/south-asia/article/3002960/china-give-us989-million-loan-sri-lanka-major-new-motorway" class="link-text">US$989 million loan</a> to Sri Lanka to build a motorway that will connect the island nation’s tea-growing central region to the southern port. As per IMD’s met centre in Dehradun, Thursday will see heavy rainfall occur at isolated places in Dehradun, Pauri and Nainital districts, the conditions will intensify on Friday, with heavy to very heavy showers likely over isolated places in Dehradun, Haridwar, Pauri, Nainital and Udham Singh Nagar districts. Tehri, Uttarkashi, Almora and Champawat will also witness heavy precipitation. Over the weekend, heavy to very heavy rains will lash isolated places in Nainital, Champwat and Udham Singh Nagar districts, while heavy showers are expected to occur at isolated places in Dehradun, Tehri, Pauri, Haridwar, Uttarkashi and Almora. IMD Dehradun adds that over the past week or so, Uttarakhand has collectively received above-normal rainfall worth 115 mm. Heavy rains have triggered landslides in the region; debris from the mountains blocked the Badrinath and Yamunotri highways for a few hours on Wednesday. In Uttarkashi district, one person died in a car accident on the Mando-Tekla motorway late on Tuesday night after losing control of his car and falling into a 100-meter-deep gorge. In Dwarahat area of Almora district, a mother and her two minor daughters also lost their lives after their two-storey house collapsed due to incessant rains on Tuesday night. Further, wet weather has caused rivers like Gaula, Sher Nala, Surya Nala in the Kumaon region to swell up. However, public sound systems are in place in sensitive areas, so as to inform people on a mass scale in case of emergencies. Since the beginning of June, Uttarakhand has collectively recorded normal precipitation at 262.8 mm. The district of Bageshwar has particularly received ‘large excess’ rainfall at 554 mm, while Pithoragarh (464.5 mm), Udham Singh Nagar (360.4 mm) and Chamoli (191.6 mm) have all registered ‘excess’ showers as compared to their respective long-term average figures. The precipitation in a majority of the remaining districts has been more or less normal. Wang’s comments come amid fresh tensions between Islamabad and New Delhi over Kashmir. India <a href="https://www.scmp.com/news/asia/south-asia/article/3021443/india-seeks-abolishes-kashmirs-special-status-constitution" class="link-text">for the United Nations Security Council to hold “closed consultations” on the revoking of the state’s autonomy. India is also involved in the Indo-Pacific strategy led by the United States, which Beijing views as a containment strategy to hinder China’s military expansion. Wang stressed that China and Pakistan should cooperate to secure their common economic interests. “The China-Pakistan Economic Corridor [CPEC] is a long-term development plan for Pakistan,” Wang said. “The Pakistani military has made unremitting efforts in corridor construction, especially security.” The corridor, a US$62 billion China-funded infrastructure project, is facing scrutiny in Pakistan over suggestions that it has left the country in a debt trap and is designed to serve China’s political agenda. There have also been security concerns surrounding CPEC projects. In May, gunmen attacked a luxury hotel in the Pakistani port city Gwadar, the hub of a multibillion-dollar Chinese infrastructure project. A regional separatist group, the Baluch Liberation Army, claimed responsibility for the attack. Elsewhere, the China Construction Third Engineering Bureau –a state-owned company that works on the Peshawar-Karachi motorway, a key CPEC project – has previously told Chinese media that around 3,500 security personnel were employed to protect about 1,000 Chinese workers and 19,000 Pakistani employees. “The current regional and international situation is undergoing a complex evolution,” Bajwa said. “I am grateful to China for its strong support to Pakistan during this crucial period. “I believe that with the help of China, the Pakistani side will be able to overcome difficulties, overcome challenges and achieve greater development. The Pakistani side regards the construction of the economic corridor in Pakistan and China as an important opportunity for national development and will work with China to promote cooperation.” Wang met Pakistani President Arif Alvi at the presidential palace in Islamabad, with the pair pledging to work together on anti-terrorism measures and economic cooperation. He also held talks with Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan and Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi. Wang had been due to visit New Delhi on September 9-10 for talks with Indian National Security Adviser Ajit Doval, but Beijing cancelled the meeting, according to Indian media. </a>
