In terms of cities, Delhi, Bangalore, and Hyderabad emerged as the top cities with the highest proportion of employers expanding their workforce sizes. The report also noted that nearly two out of five organizations are focusing on bridging skill gaps, highlighting a shift towards a more adaptable and skilled workforce in preparation for technological advancements and new skills. The report said that Generative AI (<keyword id="19949719" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="GenAI" source="keywords">GenAI</keyword>) is particularly noteworthy, as it has the potential to transform key business processes, impacting workforce dynamics and reshaping talent management. In response, 35% of surveyed organizations reported significant changes in their talent acquisition strategies to integrate advanced AI technologies. On the unemployment front, the report stated out that a significant portion of the unemployed workforce, nearly 83%, consists of youth aged 15-29. Over the past two decades, there has been a significant increase in the educational attainment of these unemployed youths. The proportion of those with at least secondary education rose from 35.2% in 2000 to 65.7% in 2022, indicating a rising educational profile among the unemployed. However, the national <keyword id="20054242" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="unemployment-rate" source="keywords">unemployment rate</keyword> has progressively decreased, falling to 3.1% in 2023 from 3.6% in 2022 and 4.2%in 2021. A quarter of Indian gig workers’ salaries grew by 50% in the last one year

However, gig workers earning less than ₹20,000 saw the slowest salary growth at 26% in the last one year, while workers with salary between ₹20,000 to ₹40,000 witnessed a salary growth of 52%. The number of gig workers earning more than ₹1.5 lakh grew by 69%, while gig workers earning between ₹85,000 to ₹1.5 lakh saw a spurt by 62%. “This shows that gig-workers are gaining more popularity among startups than hiring full-time employees,” said the report. However, gig workers who are paid less than ₹20,000 form the largest chunk of the gig workers being hired by startups, followed by those who earn anywhere between ₹20,000 to ₹40,000. Overall, the number of gig workers now contribute to 1.5% of India’s total workforce from 1.3% earlier. It could rise to 23.5 million workers in 2029-30 when it will account for 4.1% of the total workforce, the report. “Gig work is bound to expand due to the technological possibilities in numerous production spaces. At the same time, it also provides the opportunity for workers to transcend the limitations of work-time and work-space. Given this potential of gig work, the future would see a growing prominence of such work,” the report said further. Only a fifth of the 7.7 million Indian gig workers are highly skilled

Almost 50 per cent of online platform workers find their jobs through traditional referral networks despite 80 per cent having internet access, according to the report by CIIE.CO, a startup platform built at <keyword id="19483" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="iim-ahmedabad" source="Orion">IIM Ahmedabad</keyword>. The report was prepared after a survey of 4,070 platform-based gig workers between the high earning knowledge workers and daily-wage agricultural workers. Of the 400 women surveyed, 60 per cent provided services related to being house helps and earned relatively low. Nearly 78 per cent held less than two different jobs since 2015, while 46.5 per cent of the individuals held their jobs longer than 24 months, the findings showed. "Over 32.4 per cent of respondents still function on cash. This is in spite of the vast majority of them being literate and having access to the internet," the report noted. The report suggested that for financial inclusion to truly occur at scale in India, there is a need for technology to bring down costs of servicing end-users to a fraction of what it is today, need for distribution models to be drastically changed to optimise for the last mile, and the unit economics to be more inclusive. "In many ways, gig workers are channels through which the old and new India interact. Enabling gig workers to own and use their employment, financial, health etc. data will improve their well-being and unlock the growth of both traditional and new economies," said <keyword id="309812" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="supriya-sharma" source="Orion">Supriya Sharma</keyword>, Partner-Insights, CIIE.CO. Being powered by declining internet and hardware costs, technology-based platforms are becoming a lifeline for employment at a time when traditional sectors dwindle in size and reach. "Of the 4,070 individuals, over 2,000 respondents were 30 years of age or younger. This stands testament to the trend of young India finding the gig economy and its platforms as preferable sources of work opportunities and income generation," said the report. However, the study also shows that the biggest barriers for gig workers are lack of access to job information (62%), not knowing English (32%) and the local language (10%) for workers who have shifted outside of their home town for work. In fact, one out of four employers also feel that language inadequacy is a concern when hiring gig workers. Additionally, the top 3 challenges employers face in hiring for gig job roles are resume and interviewing skills (52%), poor awareness of required skills and abilities on the part of jobseekers (51%) and the screening and assessing of jobseekers (37%). Three out of five gig workers also find their jobs uncomfortable, if not hard and risky. Overall, Indeed revealed that its findings suggest more employees are not particularly fond of their work – feeding the notion of gig jobs being a short-term occupation. The survey was conducted among 550 employers and 750 gig workers across gig app companies (which includes personal care services, cleaning services, household/vehicle repairs, food and other delivery, and cab/two wheeler-driving), HR consulting, retail, food &amp; beverages, and home &amp; office services. India to add 9 million gig jobs by 2025 says Indeed report

However, the proportion of gig workers in the workforce remains less than 5% in tech companies with more than 2,000 full-time employees. On the contrary, for smaller tech organisations with a strength of less than 2,000 full-time employees, the share of gig workers is more than 5%, according to the report titled ‘<keyword id="15423686" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="future-of-workforce" source="Orion">Future of Workforce:</keyword> Decoding Gig Workforce 2.0’. “The future workforce will indeed be a blended model wherein the gig economy is expected to play an important role – not only as a talent management strategy but also accelerate job creation and boost the country’s economic growth,” said Debjani Ghosh, president at Nasscom. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="Gig durations grow" comment="subhead" text="Gig durations grow">Gig durations grow</cmsannotation> Before the pandemic, gig workers were mostly hired for projects with a duration of up to 9 months or less. About 25% of the surveyed tech organisations are now more keen to hire gig workers for projects with a duration of more than 12 months. In fact, 53% of them decided to absorb their gig workers as full-time employees, said the report. “Companies investing in gig work platforms and processes speak volumes about how critical talent is for enabling their next level of growth, especially now, given the global uncertainties. Businesses that place gig workers at the core of their business strategies will continue to thrive in 2023 and beyond,” said Sashi Kumar, head of sales, Indeed India. This spike in demand for gig workers is accompanied by salary jumps too, according to a report by RazorpayX Payroll earlier this week. It has also helped in engaging with a more diverse workforce which includes retired professionals and women returning to workforce, according to the Nasscom report. “However, ensuring the quality of gig workers, hurdles in security checks and verification, lack of structured policies, and clarity on regulations or guidelines for gig workers are some of the key concern areas amongst organisations,” the Nasscom report said. Tech cos are offering longer projects, full-time jobs to gig workers: Nasscom

In fact, a 50% growth in active gig workers on the platform in the past five months was seen. The number of active gig workers registered on the platform in May was 60,000, a 15.38% growth in the workforce joining the <keyword id="3080230" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Gig-economy" source="Orion">gig economy</keyword> compared to the previous month, as per the data given in the report. Furthermore, we have seen that emerging segments in gig are largely dominated by millennials and Gen Z today,” Janadri added. Women gig workers however make up only 28% of the gig workforce. “Gig continues to be a flexible model of work for India’s working women who are able to pick their jobs based on their area of interest, location, availability and experience. Women have been majorly employed in roles related to customer support, content monitoring and moderation, tele-sales, and audits and surveys,” says the report. Gig economy is dominated by millennials but women make up for less than a third of the workforce

<ul><li>Even though the ‘<keyword id="3080230" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="gig-economy" source="Orion">gig economy</keyword> workforce’ is a new concept, the <keyword id="37465" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="film-industry" source="Orion">film industry</keyword> has been working with such a model for decades.</li><li>The Indian film industry employed over 2.5 lakh people in 2017 alone.</li><li>Despite the unionisation of the Indian film industry that protects the rights of freelancers, there are a lot of issues left to be dealt with.</li></ul>Gig workforce is the hottest new trend that has emerged with the rise of the digital economy leading to the advent of companies like Zomato, Swiggy and <keyword id="8681398" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="urban-company" source="Orion">Urban Company</keyword>. Widely overlooked, but the concept of hiring contractual employees has been around for decades, if not centuries. That’s right. The Indian film industry has been one of the biggest employers of gig economy workers since its beginning. The Indian film industry employed over <a href="https://www.statista.com/statistics/731218/employment-in-the-film-industry-india/">2.5 lakh </a>people in 2017 alone. Business Insider hosted Academy Award winner and Indian film producer Guneet Monga and Urban Company’s cofounder Varun Khaitan in its Future of Work event — held on September 16 and 17 — to throw more light on the topic. Monga said that the film industry in general has been employing several freelancers for decades, whether it is light boys, dancers, junior artists, art directors, cinematographers and more. The term <keyword id="7771650" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="gig-workers" source="Orion">gig workers</keyword> has come up with the advent of the digital economy. “It can seem unstructured, but it actually works very well in the <keyword id="278613" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="freelance" source="Orion">freelance</keyword> business there… There is a union in this segment and that brings about a structure. But there are also some major challenges that come with it,” she added. She elaborated that the many freelancers have spoken about how difficult it is to get into the union or how expensive it is. Besides this, the segment does not get health benefits, does not come under labour codes and more, even though the payments are fixed due to the existence of a union. He noted that a salon or a service shop would employ 10-15 professionals and were essentially the “middlemen”, therefore a professional’s income would be capped. Urban Company has not only offered a more flexible working environment, but also increased their take home income and offered them health benefits. Khaitan also noted that allowing these service professionals to get in touch with customers directly has provided them with more respect and business prepositions as well. “There is actually a very high price point here [Indian film industry] even to become a part of the Union. And then there is a supply of enough and more people are constantly getting inducted, but there is definitely a bottleneck on how unions function. They do protect them [freelancers] in terms of providing for jobs, but the kind of structures that you [Urban Company] are talking about is still, I feel, not in the best shape here right now. And this has just been our industry that has been thriving on freelance,” Monga added. She elaborated that while the Indian film industry has been striving for freelancers, it's not with a vision of bringing people together or offering insurance or health benefits or looking into labour laws. Edited excerpts: Over two years into the massive shift to being ‘digital-first’, how are Indian enterprises reassessing the long-term impacts of their digital initiatives? Indian enterprises have shown tremendous resilience in the last two years, adapting well to the changing market dynamics. They have invested in large-scale reskilling of existing employees on digital technologies, hired new talent from the market, established strategic partnerships with various digital ecosystem players, developed solutions/IPs, set up innovation labs, and executed multiple acquisitions to develop new capabilities. The IDC <keyword id="14326687" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Future-Enterprise-Resiliency-Survey" source="Orion">Future Enterprise Resiliency Survey</keyword> (FERS), October 2021 shows that 92% of Indian enterprises realize the positive impact of digital transformation (DX) on the top and/or bottom line by 10% to 20%. Enterprises recognize that technology architecture is becoming business architecture and want to use technology to drive more revenue-generating activities. Indian enterprises will look to better position themselves against short-term volatility while staying on course toward long-term outcomes such as digital revenue growth. With the adoption of the ‘digital-first’ mentality, along with the ongoing pandemic, Indian enterprises are focusing on investments in technologies that drive automation of IT resources and business processes. In the post-pandemic era, if we may call it that, do you see this digital momentum continuing or will organizations take a pause to strategize further? The coming years will witness an acceleration in the adoption of digital technologies. In fact, IDC estimates emphasize that digital transformation (DX) spending in India is growing at a healthy compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 11.90% from 2020 to 2025 and is expected to approach $99 billion as companies build on existing strategies and investments, becoming digital-at-scale future enterprises. By 2023, a whopping 75% of Indian enterprises will have comprehensive digital transformation (DX) implementation roadmaps, up from 27% today, resulting in true transformation across all facets of business and society. What will be the key areas of focus for enterprises’ digital investments in this context? While the momentum will continue, Indian enterprises will focus on a few key areas to derive benefits out of their digital investments. <ul><li>Having the right KPIs to measure and convert them to business outcomes: Indian enterprises will relook at how they measure the effectiveness of their IT teams and investments. They need to tie IT initiatives to business outcomes. </li><li>Keeping pace with changing technology and being innovative: It is always difficult to keep pace with ever-changing technology. However, it is critical to experiment with new technologies. The mindset of innovation will be the focus of Indian enterprises. Innovation need not be something big, something pathbreaking. It can be incremental small changes, but they will add in the long run.</li><li>Developing a culture of agility: Indian enterprises will focus on agility in trying new products and services to keep improvising. Since there is an accelerated demand for digital technologies, the war for digital talent will continue in 2022 as well. Indian enterprises will continue to focus on reskilling existing employees with digital technologies</li><li>Harnessing data: It is critical to breaking the functional and data silos. Indian enterprises will focus on analyzing the data on an ongoing basis. They will leverage AI to manage their IT operations efficiency and reduce the cost of operations.</li></ul>Skill shortage is coming across as a major roadblock for organizations in achieving their innovation goals, especially around digital/cloud technologies, and AI. How is this affecting their digital transformation roadmaps? Transformation projects that would otherwise take ages to get approvals were given the green light due to the pandemic, as it became a necessity for Indian enterprises for continued operations and product delivery. With this acceleration came a realization that a lack of skills was creating a bottleneck in the transformation. DX-related IT skill shortages will affect 90% of global enterprises by 2025, costing over $6.5 trillion globally through 2025 due to delayed product releases, reduced customer satisfaction, and loss of business according to IDC FutureScape: Worldwide Future of Work 2022 Predictions. When Indian enterprises are ‘underskilled, as opposed to understaffed, the consequences are similar, but the remediation is more complicated. The lack of skills has an adverse influence on the key business metrics including the profit line. Though a majority of the demand for skilled personnel is among IT professionals to implement and manage the technology underpinning the business transformation, there is also an increasing demand for digital skills in the business. These include leadership, analytics, coding, and managing projects in agile environments. Employees who have those skills can help take their businesses to the next level. How can Indian enterprises continue their DX journey against the growing skill shortage? Indian enterprises have several choices to address the challenge of underskilled employees —focus on addressing skills shortages through training, engage third-party support, and automation of processes, while <keyword id="7771650" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="gig-workers" source="Orion">gig workers</keyword> are also being utilized. According to IDCs Digital Transformation survey, India 2022, Indian enterprises report that poor resource skills or the availability of the right skill set for digital transformation or infrastructure modernization is among the top three challenges that Indian enterprises encounter. Indian enterprises invested in online training to reskill employees on digital skills and be prepared for expansion plans once the crisis ends. Some are collaborating with third parties such as IT service providers to invest in reskilling existing employees to bridge the skill gap. Indian enterprises are also looking to automate processes to reduce the impact of skill shortages. The demand for gig workers has also risen as they are reliable in accomplishing a business plan within a limited time frame. There is an increased urgency to adopt AI in business processes to allow employees to focus on strategic and core functions instead of performing repetitive tasks in a traditional setup. So, Indian enterprises should take a hybrid approach of having skills in-house and partners who can bring the right skills to the table. Indian enterprises have built capabilities through reskilling and partnerships in the areas of digital technologies, customer experience, automation, cloud (migration and modernization) , next-gen security, AI, IoT, etc. Solving the skills equation has become a C-suite issue, and Indian enterprises are moving to create a culture of continuous learning and collaboration that will support their digital resiliency efforts in the future. While 2022 saw a modest 3% increase in hiring, 2023 has witnessed a strong resurgence, driven by restored public confidence in travel and government initiatives to boost tourism. India's affordable wellness industry has also played a vital role, attracting medical tourists and contributing to the industry's recovery. Freshers and entry-level talent (0-3 years of experience) constituted the largest demand segment in August 2023, accounting for 49% of online hiring intent.
