Despite unfavourable economic conditions in major markets such as the European Union (EU), the US, and West Asian nations, Indian <keyword id="21353395" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="textile-exports" source="keywords">textile exports</keyword> grew by 9.59 per cent compared to the previous year in May 2024, the Confederation of <keyword id="22064995" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-textile" source="keywords">Indian Textile</keyword> Industry (CITI) said in a report. Simultaneously, <keyword id="22064997" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-apparel-exports" source="keywords">Indian apparel exports</keyword> saw a growth of 9.84 per cent during the same period. The CITI in its report highlighted that the cumulative exports of textiles and apparel during May 2024 registered a growth of 9.70 per cent over May last year. The country's overall exports for May 2024 surged to USD 68.29 billion. This was a substantial year-on-year increase of 10.2 per cent, according to data released by the Commerce Ministry on June 14. The analysis noted that during Apr -May' 24, Indian textile exports registered a growth of 6.04 per cent over the previous year, while apparel exports registered a growth of 4.46 per cent during the same time period. The cumulative exports of textiles and apparel during April-May 2024 saw a surge of 5.34 per cent as compared to the same period last year. The recently released export data revealed that sectors such as electronic goods, drugs and pharmaceuticals, organic and inorganic chemicals, engineering goods, petroleum products, plastics &amp; linoleum, cotton yarn/fabs made-ups ( textiles manufactured), handloom products, etc., man-made yarn/fabs./made-ups, handloom products etc. performed well in the exports from the country. Other merchandise products, such as meat, dairy and poultry products, mica, coal and other ores, minerals including processed minerals, RMG of all textiles, tea, coffee, rice, tobacco, carpet and handicrafts, oil seeds; and fruits and vegetables, did well too. On Friday, AshwKumar, President of the Federation of Indian Export Organisations (FIEO), highlighted that a positive trajectory was seen in May 2024, driven by robust order bookings. Among the top ten export markets for India were the US, UAE, Netherlands, UK, China, Singapore, Saudi Arabia, Bangladesh, Germany and France. Considerably, in these markets, the exports registered a double-digit growth rate. Breaking down export data released yesterday, the merchandise exports witnessed a 9.1 per cent rise to USD 38.13 billion, while service exports climbed by 11.7 per cent, reaching USD 30.16 billion. Indian textile exports surge by 9.59% in May despite global economic challenges

<keyword id="21244010" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="government-measures" source="keywords">Government measures</keyword> such as mandatory quality control orders and increasing customs duty have helped boost exports of <keyword id="25284" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="toys" source="Orion">toys</keyword> from India, but there is a need to do much more for the sector, a top official said on Wednesday. Secretary in the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) Rajesh Kumar Singh also indicated that they are diligently pursuing the proposal of extending fiscal incentives under the production-linked incentive scheme for the sector. He said that the industry is wondering about one proposed major policy intervention and "let me assure you that we are still pursuing that". In the interim Budget in February, the Commerce and Industry Ministry has recommended an outlay of Rs 3,489 crore for the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme for toys to boost domestic manufacturing of the sector. As the scheme is yet to be cleared by the Union Cabinet, the interim Budget has made a token provision of Rs 1 lakh towards the scheme for 2024-25. The scheme aims to attract investments in key sectors and cutting-edge technology; ensure efficiency, bring economies of size and scale in the manufacturing sector and make Indian companies and manufacturers globally competitive. Singh said that the country's <keyword id="21563576" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="toy-exports" source="keywords">toy exports</keyword> have jumped to USD 325.72 million in 2022-23 from USD 96.17 million in 2014-15 as the government is providing all-around support for creating a conducive manufacturing ecosystem for the toy industry. Imports of toys dipped by 52 per cent from USD 332.55 million in 2014-15 to USD 158.7 million in 2022-23. "The national action plan for toys and other initiatives has had a good impact, but we need to do much more," Singh said, adding the sector holds huge exports and job potential. In order to make India a global hub for toy manufacturing, the government has undertaken a series of initiatives including the formulation of a comprehensive National Action Plan for Toys (NAPT) to promote the designing of toys, using toys as a learning resource, monitoring quality of toys, and promoting indigenous toy clusters. The secretary was speaking at a toy workshop in New Delhi. In order to enable further growth, increased market access and development of new-age marketing skills, DPIIT conducted a workshop with Flipkart and the Indian Toy Industry. Flipkart, Walmart and the Toy Association of India participated in the event. Joint Secretary in the DPIIT Sanjiv said that the workshop was aimed at enhancing India's position and capabilities in the global toy supply chain. It will help the toy manufacturers understand the nuances of online selling which shall in turn help in the growth of sales and market access, Sanjiv said. The issues figured out in the workshop included ways to increase sourcing by online platforms, onboarding of manufacturers on the Flipkart platform and upskilling. It was also aimed at supporting online selling, scaling domestic consumption and upskilling/reskilling workforce. Last year, Flipkart informed toy makers about their requirements and expected quality standards, as it is directly engaging with domestic toymakers for sourcing. The online platforms provide greater access to a much wider customer base across India, expanding their market reach significantly. E-commerce eliminates the need for physical stores, reducing operational costs. It also provides valuable brand exposure to a large audience. Additionally, e-commerce platforms offer data on consumer buying habits and preferences, allowing manufacturers to develop products that cater to market demands. India raised import duties on toys beginning in February 2020. The basic customs duty was increased from 20 per cent to 60 per cent and then to 70 per cent in July 2021.

Govt steps have boosted toy exports from India, but more work still needed: DPIIT Secretary

The country's <keyword id="20631272" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="merchandise-exports" source="keywords">merchandise exports</keyword> are expected to increase about USD 60-70 billion to <keyword id="20120060" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="USD-500-billion" source="keywords">USD 500 billion</keyword> by the end of FY25, apex exporters' body <keyword id="20516660" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="FIEO" source="keywords">FIEO</keyword> said on Thursday. Federation of <keyword id="702966" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-export" source="Orion">Indian Export</keyword> Organisations (FIEO) President <keyword id="19991031" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ashwini-Kumar" source="keywords">Ashwini Kumar</keyword> also said the country's <keyword id="20061029" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="services-exports" source="keywords">services exports</keyword> are also likely to reach USD 390-400 billion this fiscal. "We are looking for merchandise <keyword id="19916774" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="exports" source="keywords">exports</keyword> between USD 500-510 billion in 2024-25. In the services, we expect exports to be around USD 390-400 billion for the current fiscal," Kumar told reporters in New Delhi. She said <keyword id="20677957" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="traditional-markets" source="keywords">traditional markets</keyword> like the US and Europe will help in <keyword id="21683869" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="boosting-Indias-exports" source="keywords">boosting India's exports</keyword>. In 2023-24, exports had dipped over 3 per cent to USD 437 billion.

India's merchandise exports to rise 12-15%, reach USD 400 billion this fiscal: FIEO

Soon, Indian exporters and manufacturers will be able to sell their products to vendors across the globe as the country is planning to open up a B2B e-commerce portal. 
 In a first-of-its-kind initiative, India wants to open an online marketplace for exports based on <keyword id="4187526" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Alibaba-model">Alibaba model</keyword>. 
 
This move will not only add value and brand but will also open windows from Indian exporters to trade from different nations, making India a sourcing hub as well. 
 
Alibaba’s model works on a simple concept, it is a platform for global wholesale trade through which manufacturers and distributors can sell their products to companies in other countries. 
 The online platform is being built by <keyword id="808260" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="India-Brand-Equity-Foundation">India Brand Equity Foundation</keyword> (IBEF), a trust set up by the commerce department. 
 
"Though we are still working on the modalities such as payment mechanism and insurance, the overall sentiment for the project from all departments concerned, is positive. The IBEF intends to launch this business-to-business portal with at least one lakh sellers and plans to scale it up to 5 lakh over time,” an official told ET. 
 
It is likely that the online marketplace will tie up with India Post for exports. 
 
Reportedly, India's exports have been declining for the last 11 months due to major competition in a weak global economy making it difficult to achieve the targeted $300 billion from exports in 2015-16.

Once the course is complete, candidates will be awarded certificates in export-import management by the government under the ‘Niryat Bandhu Scheme’. The program titled, 'Anytime-Anywhere,’ is a reportedly a joint effort between the government and Indian Institute of Foreign Trade (IIFT). Commerce and industry minister, Suresh Prabhu reportedly said that the course is aimed at training, mentoring and supporting prospective exporters and traders in India. Stressing the need for spreading awareness on trade, commerce secretary Anup Wadhawan reportedly said the government has been able to stem decline in exports hurting the Indian market by facilitating trade combined with the growing technology and implementation of goods and services tax (GST). India’s Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT), responsible for fostering the exports sector, is also trying to make the export sector more digital-savvy. According to Director General, Alok Chaturvedi, the DGFT has <a href="https://knnindia.co.in/news/newsdetails/sectors/prabhu-launches-anytime-anywhere-export-awareness-course-to-hand-hold-exporters">reportedly</a> approved to rebuild its entire IT infrastructure to go paperless and attain end-to-end IT enablement. It has also launched a DGFT's mobile app dedicated to trade practices, for a smooth sailing of the process. The app is designed as a communication platform that will let exporters apply for licences and stay updated on latest trade notices including <keyword id="35067" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="foreign-trade-policy">Foreign Trade Policy</keyword> and international trade affairs. <keyword id="7706673" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="finance-minister-nirmala-sitharaman" source="Orion">Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman</keyword> on Friday asked the Indian industry to be prepared against "tariff walls" which are likely to be imposed by nations undertaking green transitions, on <keyword id="162090" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="indian-exports" source="Orion">Indian exports</keyword>, especially steel products. "Many nations want to fund their <keyword id="8445756" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="green-transition" source="Orion">green transition</keyword> and are imposing tariff walls on products from other nations. If we export steel to such places, it is likely to face this tariff wall or tax for green transition. Indian industry needs to reset itself accordingly," she said while addressing the industry body FICCI's annual general meeting (AGM). Sitharaman further noted that with many European nations looking to relocate to other countries for setting up manufacturing facilities, out of China, India should look to make use of this opportunity and present itself as a viable manufacturing hub for Europe. She urged the industry to prepare strategies for bringing manufacturers to India. The minister said that during the tenure of India's G20 presidency, Government would showcase the country as a destination to go for, to investors from G20 nations, especially for manufacturing. Stating that India continues to remain a resilient economy amid fluid geopolitical situation, Sitharaman quoted World Economic Forum's data, saying that by 2030, there would be 140 million middle income households and 14 million high net worth households in the country. This, she highlighted, shows the scale of India's growth in the future. In this context, the focus of the industry should be on widening the technological growth, making use of the robust framework provided by the Government, the finance minister suggested. Be prepared for export tariff walls by nations undergoing green transition: FM Nirmala Sitharaman

Despite geopolitical tensions in <keyword id="19897269" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="europe" source="keywords">Europe</keyword> and the <keyword id="19904316" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="middle-east" source="keywords">Middle East</keyword>, <keyword id="19895063" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="india" source="keywords">India</keyword>'s <keyword id="20631272" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="merchandise-exports" source="keywords">merchandise exports</keyword> grew by 5.8% to $109.96 billion compared to $103.9 billion in the same period last year, according to a CRISIL report. The report states that the deceleration in the growth momentum of exports in June compared to May was largely due to an 18.2% contraction in oil exports. The growth momentum slowed down in June, with merchandise exports increasing by only 2.6% year-on-year, down from 9.1% in May. Non-oil exports continued to maintain steady growth, rising by 7.7% in June, almost in line with the 7.8% growth recorded in May. Services exports exhibited a strong performance in June, contributing positively to the overall trade scenario. The positive aspect is that merchandise imports grew at a slower pace of 5% year-on-year in June, down from 7.7% in May. However, core imports, excluding oil and gold, surged by 7.1%, increasing from the 0.8% growth in the previous month. This spike in core imports was partially driven by a low base effect from the previous year. Despite the positive growth in exports, the <keyword id="20201391" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="trade-deficit" source="keywords">trade deficit</keyword> widened to $21 billion in June from $19.2 billion in the same month last year. For the first quarter, cumulative imports rose by 7.7% to $172.4 billion from $160 billion, resulting in a trade deficit of $62.44 billion, up from $56.1 billion. This widening deficit was mainly due to a higher oil trade deficit, while the non-oil trade deficit narrowed. Services exports were a bright spot, increasing by 10.2% year-on-year to $29.76 billion in May. On the other hand, service import growth moderated to 5.4%, down from 19.1% in the previous month. Consequently, the services trade surplus expanded to $13.02 billion, up from $11.1 billion in May last year. Oil exports fell by 18.3% year-on-year and 18.5% month-on-month in June, despite stable international prices. This suggests a reduction in export volumes, with exports falling to $5.5 billion from $6.8 billion in June last year and the previous month. Oil imports increased by 19.6% in June compared to 28% in May, driven by domestic demand and local refineries operating above capacity. Sectors such as drugs and pharmaceuticals, engineering goods, organic and inorganic chemicals, and ready-made garments showed positive growth. However, pharmaceuticals (9.9% vs. 10.5%) and ready-made garments (3.7% vs. 9.8%) saw slower growth compared to May. Gems and jewellery exports continued to decline, marking the seventh consecutive month of negative growth at -1.4% year-on-year. Growth in carpets, handloom products, man-made products, plastics, and linoleum was positive but slower than the previous month. Handmade carpets (-16.6% vs. 20.6%), jute manufacturing (-11.1% vs. -5.2%), and leather products (-2.2% vs -2.1%) recorded contractions. Cashew exports have been declining since 2018, with only sporadic months of positive growth. In June, cashew exports fell by 7.3%, an improvement from the 25.8% decline in May. Coffee (70% vs. 64.2%), fruits and vegetables (7% vs. 20.8%), rice (1% vs. 2.8%), spices (9.8%vs. 20.3%), tea (3.2% vs. 19.6%), and tobacco (37.7% vs. 58.4%) saw slower growth compared to May. Marine products (-7.7% vs. -3.9%) and meat, dairy, and poultry products (-13.9% vs. 22.9%) also experienced a decline. Increases were noted in electronic goods (15.9% vs. 6.7%), fruits and vegetables (22.6% vs. 3%), non-ferrous metals (47.6% vs. 1.1%), project goods (31.4% vs. -44.3%), textiles and yarn fabric made-up articles (23.8% vs. -1.1%), and wood products (16.2% vs. -7.2%). The fiscal year has started positively with steady merchandise export growth in the first quarter. Encouragingly, multilateral organisations have forecasted better year-on-year trade growth. The Indian government's focus on foreign trade agreements (FTAs) is expected to further boost trade. However, the persistent growth in imports surpassing exports is a concern, widening the trade deficit. The recent US tariff hikes on Chinese imports could lead to potential dumping by China in the Asian market, including India, which requires close monitoring. Despite these challenges, the expected moderation in domestic growth may help contain import growth and the trade deficit. The service trade surplus and robust remittance flows are positive indicators that the current account will remain stable.

Indian exports show resilience amid global challenges in first quarter, says CRISIL report

<a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=mexico">Mexico</a> is around 12,000 nautical miles away from India but has bridged the distance and is set to become the biggest export market for <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=indian+car+industry">Indian carmakers</a> this fiscal. 
 
The Central American country gets one-fifth of all <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=car+exports">cars shipped out of India</a>, becoming the topmost overseas market for India-made cars this year, by importing about 1.3 lakh vehicles. 
 
As per reports, car exports to Mexico will go up by over 50% to 1.32 lakh units in 2015-16, as against 82,000 vehicles for the same period last year. 
 
Economic Times reported <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=volkswagen">Volkswagen</a> alone is expected to ship more than 55,000 cars from India to Mexico and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=general+motors">General Motors</a> will export over 45,000 units of Beat small car, which is sold as Spark in that market. 
 
<a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=hyundai">Hyundai</a>'s i10 Grand and Xcent, Ford's Figo and Figo Aspire, and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=maruti">Maruti</a> Suzuki's Ciaz are among the other Indian cars headed for Mexico. 
 "Mexico is the most important and largest export market for <keyword id="159682" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Volkswagen-India">Volkswagen India</keyword>. In 2014, we shipped approximately 55,000 cars to Mexico. In 2015, we expect to ship slightly higher number to Mexico," one of the persons associated with the matter told ET. 
 
Despite freight cost plus import duty of 20%, the likes of Volkswagen India and General Motors India have allocated large batches of cars from the country to Mexico to gain from economies of scale and cost advantage in the country that is about 20%-30%. 
 
Gaurav Vangaal, senior analyst, forecasting, at IHS Automotive, told the financial daily the booming demand in Mexico is a blessing in disguise for some carmakers that were unable to utilise their production capacity due to slow demand. 
 
Rakesh Srivastava, senior VP for sales and marketing at Hyundai Motor India, told ET his company plans to raise exports to Mexico by 37% in 2015 and ship over 12,500 cars. 
 
<a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=nissan">Nissan</a> is the market leader in Mexico, followed by GM and VW. Mid-size sedans like Nissan Sunny, Volkswagen Vento and Ford Fiesta make up for over 10% of the market at approximately 1.2 lakh units. 
 
Another factor is that Mexico's currency is weakening, making its imports expensive. The Mexican Peso has moved up to 16.26 against the US dollar from 12.65 in 2012.

In 2020, Amazon pledged to enable $10 billion in cumulative exports from India by 2025. The company said that cumulative exports by the Indian micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) via its 'Global Selling' programme are currently on track to surpass the $5 billion milestone. The programme took about three years to enable the first billion dollars, and the last two billion dollars have come in just 17 months, Amazon said during the '<keyword id="13813097" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="exports-digest" source="Orion">Exports Digest</keyword> 2022' event. "Enhancing the export potential of Indian MSMEs is a key government priority and efforts are being made to support Indian MSMEs for their success in international markets," said <keyword id="1658" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="narayan-rane" source="Orion">Narayan Rane</keyword>, Union Minister of <keyword id="916743" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="micro-small-and-medium-enterprises" source="Orion">Micro Small and Medium Enterprises</keyword>. The global programme has witnessed good adoption among businesses of all sizes across the country and has grown to more than 1 lakh (100K) exporters since its launch in 2015, showcasing their products to customers worldwide through Amazon's 18 international websites. "We are scaling up our pledge to boost exports from India using e-commerce to $20 billion by 2025. More than 1,000 Indian exporters on Amazon Global Selling crossed Rs 1 crore in sales last year. Amazon promises $20 billion in exports from India by 2025

Since the launch of ‘<keyword id="6354869" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="make-in-India">Make in India</keyword>’ program, considerable thrust has been given to <keyword id="2377476" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="defence-manufacturing">defence manufacturing</keyword>. Transformation from being one of the largest importers of arms into a credible defence equipment manufacturer takes a lot. 
 
Country’s defence spending is expected to go beyond USD 600 billion by 2022 and every private company indulged into defence manufacturing wants a pie of that, especially when USD 150 billion of contracts are there to be awarded within a few years.

Defence Manufacturing, Exports and its future: 
 
Indian exports are negligible when it comes to the total market share on a global level. India has exported defence equipment to 22 countries over last one year, including UK, US, Israel and Russia. India exported forging equipment, electronic assemblies, flight panel controls to the US. 
 
India exported transmitting tubes to UK and MIG &amp; Sukhoi 30 aircraft spares and services to Russia. India’s major exports included Cheetal helicopters to Afghanistan, Dhruv helicopters and bulletproof jackets to Nepal, Sukhoi avionics and MIG spares to Malaysia, offshore petrol vessels and ammunition to Mauritius and Jaguar aircrafts and spares to Oman. 
 
Indian private players are looking for foreign partners as the foreign direct investment in defence sector is pushed up to 49%. Reliance defence had signed a manufacturing and maintenance deal potentially worth $6 billion with Russia's Almaz-Antey, the maker of an air defence system. Apart from the Akash air defence system, the government had cleared the purchase of five S-400 air defence systems that are estimated to cost about $4.5 billion. 
 
Similarly kalyani group tied up with Rafael of Israel to make Spike Anti-tank missiles for the Indian military. 
 
Indian private players are still far away from accessing the key sensitive technologies related to fighter aircrafts and nuclear submarines however they are approaching fast by the virtue of transfer of technology and domestic manufacturing set-up under the make in India program. What must is to invest heavily in R&amp;D facilities along with the collaboration of key government institutions like DRDO with the private partners. Incoming demands for defence equipment is heavy and it should only be fulfilled by boosting the manufacturing process along with minimum government interference and a feasible policy framework.
