Mark Zuckerberg leads $50 million investment in Indian education startup

The investment, which will go towards bringing on board more educators and better the product, also saw the founders Gaurav Munjal and Roman Saini participate in the round. “In the last few months, we have taken bigger strides toward achieving this mission. We have more than 400 top educators from across the country taking live classes every day on Unacademy Plus. This is available to every student, irrespective of their location,” said Munjal. Unacademy plus is the startup’s subscription plan which has more than 50,000 learners. The startup, which was founded in 2015, has over 13 million learners. “We are seeing unprecedented growth and engagement from learners in smaller towns and cities, and are also very humbled to see that top-quality educators are choosing Unacademy as their primary platform to reach out to students,” said Munjal. This also shows the growth trajectory of Indian online education space. Online education industry in India is expected to hit 9.6 million by 2021 user base, which was 1.6 million in 2016, as per a KPMG report. In fact, a survey by education startup GradeUp also shows that students are counting on online teaching for competitive exams — JEE, NEET, GATE, SSC and banking exams. Meanwhile, the big player in Indian <keyword id="1974983" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Edutech">edutech</keyword> space remains Byju’s – which had recently reported profitability with an increase in the number of paid users. Unacademy raises $50 million as Byju’s success draws top dollars into online education in India

In a recently released entrepreneurial study by <keyword id="10875" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="IBM">IBM</keyword> to understand the rapidly evolving India <keyword id="1973995" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Startup-ecosystem">startup ecosystem</keyword> and its effects on the wider economy, the results reveal that <keyword id="6362513" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Startups">startups</keyword> can exploit a range of attributes and advantages unique to India. More than 76% of Indian executives pointed to India’s economic openness as a major business advantage, while 60% identified India’s skilled workforce and 57% of the executives said that India’s large domestic market provides significant advantages. The study further focuses on how more proactive engagement between startup and established organizations can help startups harden their business models, accelerate growth and leapfrog into the big leagues, while enabling established companies to share in the entrepreneurial spirit of <keyword id="94495" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="20" keywordseo="Innovation">innovation</keyword> and agility. Their mutual success will drive India toward an ever-more dynamic future. “Startups are redefining the Indian economy by being the catalysts for technology innovation and collaboration. The Indian startup community; ranked third globally in terms of number of startups has been creating new job opportunities and attracting capital investment. We believe that startups need to focus on societal problems like healthcare, sanitation, education, transportation, alternate energy management and others, which would help deal with the issues that India and the world face. He further added, “At IBM, we work closely with startups, VCs, incubators, academia, and individual developers to foster a culture of innovation and disruption and provide access to deep technology such as cognitive, blockchain, cloud and other emerging technologies, as well as the business mentoring needed for their growth.” Startup activity is driving India’s emerging business ecosystems India’s startup community is expanding rapidly with a strong entrepreneurial culture, especially among millennials. Strong government promotion of entrepreneurship has strengthened a rapidly evolving startup culture – a proposed reduction in corporate tax from 30% to 25% is expected to further boost startup activity. The study further stated that market valuation of Indian startups has grown significantly over the past four years, with three times increase in startup investment recorded in 2015. According to the study, approximately 35% of startups are being set up in tier two and tier three cities, thereby promoting accelerated development and industrialization of rural and other less developed areas. Top roadblocks for India’s startups Despite India’s entrepreneurial strength, the startup economy still has not reached full maturity and more than 90% of startups fail within the first five years. 1) Lack of innovation: 77% of venture capitalists surveyed believe that many Indian startups lack pioneering innovation based on new technologies or unique business models. Indian startups are prone to emulate already successful global ideas. 2) Lack of skilled workforce: 70% of the venture capitalists believe that talent acquisition is one of the biggest challenges faced by Indian startups, and limited availability of necessary skills impedes growth. As per a study, 80% of engineering graduates in India are deemed unemployable and 48% of employers in India face difficulty in filling vacancies. 3) Lack of sufficient funding: Indian startups face funding roadblocks both at entry and exit stages while successful global startup ecosystems are well supported by active investor communities. 65% of venture capitalists revealed that funding is one of the major challenges for these companies. 4) Other roadblocks include inadequate formal mentoring, poor business ethics and lack of experienced leadership. Stakeholder engagement key to derive significant benefits in startup ecosystems Ecosystems are crucial for India’s entrepreneurial economy to thrive. The IBV study also outlines the importance of stakeholders’ involvement, along with offering recommendations designed to increase the value of their contributions and accelerate outcomes. Established companies, startups, venture capitalists, government and higher education institutions have significant roles to play and rewards to reap in fostering further development of India’s startup economy. A robust startup community improves the vitality of the Indian economy and provides a gateway to systemic economic transformation. The formation of ecosystems in which established companies, startups, venture capitalists, government and centers of higher education are able to engage and interact can empower India to consolidate its place as a leader in the global economy. Online education services marketplace <keyword id="1066163" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="Edukart">EduKart</keyword>.com has raised $1 million (about Rs 6.4 crore) in a fresh round of funding led by cricketer Yuvraj Singh's newly-launched <keyword id="6357097" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="venture-capital">venture capital</keyword> fund <keyword id="2797838" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="YouWeCan-Ventures">YouWeCan Ventures</keyword> and United Finsec, the family office of the Holostik Group. 
 
The Delhi-based startup will use the proceeds from the latest round of fundraising, which also saw Dave McClure-led seed stage accelerator and fund 500 Startups invest in the venture, to ramp up its team, marketing and technology while bringing more courses and course providers on to the platform. 
 
"India's education industry continues to be an extremely fragmented market. We are hoping to provide students with far greater depth through EduKart," said Ishan Gupta, co-founder and chief executive of the company. 
 The company's existing group of angel investors also participated in the latest round of equity financing. The group includes Vijay Shekhar Sharma, chairman and managing director of mobile commerce and recharge venture Paytm, Patni scions Amit and Arihant Patni, and <keyword id="2913729" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="Manish-Kheterpal">Manish Kheterpal</keyword>, the former director of private equity fund Providence Equity Partners. 
 
Till date, EduKart has raised angel funding of about $2 million (Rs 12.8 crore). 
 
Yuvraj Singh said, "Focus on education is also a must in today's cut-throat competitive environment. EduKart can really become your trusted partner in making the right choices." 
According to industry data, India's education sector is pegged at about $60 billion (Rs 3.8 lakh crore). But the total amount of foreign direct investments inflow into the sector stood at just $1.07 billion (Rs 6,848 crore) between April 2000 and January 2015, according to the Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion. 
 Edukart, which was founded in 2011 by the unrelated duo of Stanford Graduate School of Business alumni Ishan Gupta and IIM Kozhikode graduate <keyword id="918804" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Mayank-Gupta">Mayank Gupta</keyword>, is now targeting listing of 10,000 courses and 500 course providers on the marketplace. Mayank Gupta, however, is no longer with the company. 
 
The startup currently has 2,000 courses listed on its platform and it works with over 90 education organisations including coaching centres, universities and institutions such as Indian School of Business and Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies. 
"Education spending is on the rise among the tech-savvy Indian middle class. I believe that the online distribution of education products and services will have significant growth in the coming years," said Pankaj Jain, partner at 500 Startups. 
 
EduKart is targeting revenue of $8-10 million (up to Rs 64 crore) and looking to announce its first profit by the end of this fiscal.

It will also engage younger children with video-based tutorials. In a first, the US conglomerate is partnering with a learning platform, which will be unique to India. Previously, the company collaborated with clothing brands and consumer product makers. The move will accelerate the unicorn’s expansion into global markets like US, UK and Australia. According to the report, the edtech company has a revenue-sharing agreement with Disney — which could range between 10%-15%. For long, Byju’s had been considering bringing in <a href="https://www.business-standard.com/article/companies/unicorn-start-up-byju-s-to-use-cartoon-characters-to-teach-math-science-119030300602_1.html">cartoon characters</a> onto its platform like Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck, among others — to teach Mathematics and Science. Apoorv Sharma, co-founder &amp; president, Venture Catalysts, in an earlier interview with Business Insider had put forth the same point to say it will be a vital factor in increasing India’s ranking in the global startup ecosystem. However, Sharma believes that in India, private incubators too need to be given incentives. He cites the example of the US and China, where successful incubators and accelerators are the private ones. Sitharaman announced a slew of initiatives that has the markets rejoicing – corporate tax has been slashed. A domestic company can pay income tax at 22% if they don’t seek any exemption or incentives and there will be an Effective Tax Rate of 25.17% inclusive of all surcharges and cess for such domestic companies.
