<ul><li>Paytm now offers hotel booking with its acquisition of NightStay. </li><li>Earlier in January, Paytm had announced its entry into food delivery. </li><li>It already operates in the ticketing business with Paytm Movies, e-commerce sector with Paytm Mall.</li></ul>Paytm is one of the frontrunners of Indian startups and a leader in the digital payments in India. But it’s also competing head-on with almost every other business in the e-commerce space. In the last one month, the company has entered two new major segments – hotel booking and food delivery. On January 30, Paytm announced the acquisition of <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/small-biz/startups/newsbuzz/paytm-enters-hotel-booking-business-buys-nightstay/articleshow/67748857.cms">NightStay</a>, a four-year platform which helps users book hotel rooms and offers last minute deals. While MakeMyTrip and Oyo Rooms have been dominating the <keyword id="864750" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Hotel-bookings">hotel bookings</keyword> space, the recent acquisition of NightStay will help Paytm become a one-stop shop for its over 230 million users and the potential ones. Paytm already competes with MakeMyTrip in offering flight and train tickets. Vijay Shekhar Sharma took on BookMyShow when Paytm started selling movie tickets in 2016. <a href="https://techcircle.vccircle.com/2018/10/30/kept-on-its-toes-by-paytm-bookmyshow-slips-deeper-into-the-red-in-fy18">BookMyShow</a> revenue growth dropped to 27% in 2016-17 from 85% a year earlier. Earlier in January, Paytm had also announced its<a href="https://www.businesstoday.in/technology/news/paytm-joins-hands-with-zomato-to-offer-in-app-food-delivery-service/story/310921.html"> partnership</a> with foodtech unicorn Zomato to enter the food delivery segment and take on rival Swiggy. With the Paytm Mall, the company has a foot in online retail- from apparels and accessories to electronics, footwear, and fitness equipments to name a few. However, its success has been limited. Even with massive cashbacks and discounts, Paytm Mall had not been able to make an impact yet with reports reflecting that the company’s losses went up by <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/small-biz/startups/newsbuzz/paytms-parent-company-one97-communications-widens-net-loss-to-rs-1490-4-cr/articleshow/66402994.cms">270%</a> last year mainly because of its e-retail arm. The <keyword id="1705292" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-e-commerce">Indian e-commerce</keyword> segment is already crowded with Amazon and Walmart fighting it out, and now, Reliance Industries also planning to enter the market. While there were rumours of the company planning to scale down its e-commerce operations, founder Vijay Shekhar Sharma had told <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/industry/services/retail/paytm-has-no-plans-to-leave-mall-business-vijay-shekhar-sharma/articleshow/67681312.cms">ET</a> that “it has no plans to leave the mall business”. Paytm is competing with almost everyone in Indian e-commerce

<keyword id="189262" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="private-equity-funding">Private equity funding</keyword> is on a decline from last year, says a report by global research firm <keyword id="6361649" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Goldman-Sachs">Goldman Sachs</keyword>. As per the report, it declined by 25% year-on-year and fell to $1.9 billion in 2016, as compared to $2.5 billion in 2015. Even though the number of deals went up by 52% year-on-year in 2016, it was the average deal size that fell by 51% to come down to $4.3 million. Capital flows, which stood at $4bn in 2015 Q3 at peak, started to recede afterwards. 
 This slowdown has forced <keyword id="770060" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Indian-start-ups">Indian start-ups</keyword> to lower their cash burn rates while focusing on restructuring operations so that they can improve profitability. 
 
However, the companies that have already attained a balance in their operations are not as such affected by this slowdown and are able to smoothly raise their capital. 
 
"The newer ones are finding it more difficult," said the report. "Forced consolidation has led players with stronger balance sheets/scale to acquire the weaker companies in some cases," it added. 
 As per the report dated June 15, 2016, <keyword id="1705292" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Indian-e-commerce">Indian e-commerce</keyword>, on the other hand, has received a healthy capital inflow, climbing to over $8.4 billion in 2015 as compared to $6 billion in 2014. 
 
The international e-commerce market is expected to grow at 20% in the coming three years with China and India being the major influencers. By 2020, the e-commerce space in India would touch $100 billion, driven by an increase in consumers' willingness and increase in access to mobile internet.

Private equity funding losing interest in start-ups, says Goldman Sachs

<keyword id="874458" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Xiaomi">Xiaomi</keyword> is developing a complete <keyword id="35621" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="e-commerce">e-commerce</keyword> business model for its phones and devices. 
 
The company’s Indian Head Manu Kumar Jain it is actively considering investing in a few technology startups to develop an eco-system. Currently, a huge chunk of its profits comes from partners like Flipkart or Amazon or Snapdeal. 
 
"The investment will go into setting up our own e-commerce business (including setting up) warehouse and logistics. We also enable sales though me.com, which is our own ecommerce platform. We have not done any marketing for that (to promote the site)," Jain told reporters. 
 
He said the company is currently getting a few thousand orders a day, adding, they would also be investing in setting up a research and development centre in Bengaluru, a manufacturing facility and expanding exclusive sales and service network. 
 
Jain said they are in talks with several state governments for setting up plants. 
 
"We are actively talking to few other tech companies. They are startups and none of them are like the new ones who are looking for angel's money. They are established. They have raised one or two rounds of funding and generating revenues," Jain explained.

Xiaomi is
looking for Indian startups to launch into e-commerce

<ul><li><keyword id="225032" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sachin-Bansal">Sachin Bansal</keyword>, <keyword id="6354742" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Flipkart">Flipkart</keyword>’s Founder, is expected to sell all his shares. </li><li><keyword id="80487" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="walmart">Walmart</keyword> will get 60% of the acquisition. </li><li>The remaining 15% will go to <keyword id="6357623" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="alphabet">Alphabet</keyword>, Google’s parent company. </li></ul> One of the largest acquisitions involving an Indian company might be finalised as soon as <a href="https://www.moneycontrol.com/news/business/walmart-to-likely-announce-flipkart-deal-this-week-may-acquire-70-75-stake-2564503.html">tomorrow</a>. American multinational retail corporation Walmart has been in the process of acquiring Flipkart, India’s second largest e-commerce portal, for a while and it seems the deal may finally be made official tomorrow. <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/Sudden-dust-storms-in-northern-India-have-killed-over-120-people/articleshow/64027810.cms">Reports</a> last week indicated that Flipkart’s board approved the deal for Walmart to acquire 75% of the company. Keep in mind that Walmart isn’t alone in this venture. While the company will get around 60% stake in Flipkart, Google’s parent company, Alphabet, will get the other 15%. Overall, this is expected to be a $3 billion dollar expense between the two. Walmart is expected to get three seats on Flipkart’s board of directors. The company will also have a say in the how Flipkart handles it’s financial and legal matters, a source told <a href="https://www.ndtv.com/india-news/walmart-likely-to-announce-flipkart-deal-by-this-week-report-1848670">NDTV</a>. Winds of change Sachin Bansal, Flipkart’s founder, is set to leave the company altogether. As per reports, Flipkart’s co-founder will sell his 5.5% stake in the company to Walmart, resulting in around $1 billion. Sources revealed to <a href="https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/people/sachin-bansal-to-sell-entire-5-5-to-walmart-as-he-exits-flipkart/articleshow/64073757.cms">Times of India</a>, that Bansal “wasn’t aligned with the strategy and operating structure that was being proposed post Walmart coming on board.” This isn’t entirely new information since rumours of his departure have been circling for a while. After Walmart’s acquisition comes through, <keyword id="6364080" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="binny-bansal">Binny Bansal</keyword> will stay on as the group CEO and also be given the title of executive chairman. Kalyan Krishnamurthy, Flipkart’s current CEO, will also stay with the company but won’t have a seat on the board. Sachin Bansal won’t be the only one leaving. <keyword id="163404" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Softbank">SoftBank</keyword>, currently Flipkart’s largest investor, is rumoured to want to back out as well, that too completely. Even Tiger Global and Accel, two other investors, maybe looking to sell a majority of their stakes.
