Despite tight schedule, Prime Minister <keyword id="6354477" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Narendra-Modi">Narendra Modi</keyword> addressed members of Indian community in Seoul and highlighted how the ‘mood’ in India had changed from the day he took over and also elucidated what all measures he is taking to present the country as one of the major global players. 
 
Modi, who landed in Seoul on final leg of his three-day tour, played his development plank and said ‘development’ was a medicinal herb, which would solve India’s problems. 
 
Citing examples of how India helped Nepal in its distress and how India evacuated not only its nationals but people from other countries, including Pakistan, also from Yemen, Modi said that cooperation was rising among countries. 
 
The Prime Minister, who is known for his oratory skills, quoted poet Rabindranath Tagore, saying he said South Korea was ‘Lamp of the East’, and told the gathering about his Government’s ‘Act East Policy’. 
 
He looked for investments from Indian diaspora, saying they had equal rights on the country. “The extent to which Narendra Modi has a right over India, you too have the same right on the country,” he said. 
 
As Modi nears one year of completion of his office, he did not fail to praise his own Government among people, emphasising how the country had starting changing after 30 years. 
 
This time he chose to wore a band-gala suit for the event in contrast to other events in the past in different countries, where he is spotted wearing traditional kurta-churidaar to address Indian community. 
 
Mentioning about SAARC and BRICS, India said now was the time to emphasise on ‘I’, which had become strong in past one year. 
 After his address, Modi will meet South Korean President <keyword id="1193885" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Park-Geun-Hye">Park Geun-hye</keyword> and present his ‘Make in India’ initiative to South Korean chaebols, like Samsung, LG and Hyundai. 
 
He is expected to meet highest officials of the companies and lure them to do businesses in India. 
 
After winning the biggest mandate last year in May, Modi had vowed to cut red tapism and correct India’s ranking in ‘ease of doing business’, which slipped to 142. 
 
After arriving in the country, Modi laid a wreath at Seoul National Cemetery. He also received a rousing welcome by Indian diaspora and is scheduled to address 1,500 members of Indian community before meeting the President. 
 
India and South Korea look forward to boost bilateral trade, which stands at $16 billion. 
 
Globetrotting Modi wants to attract maximum investments in India. The Indian PM wants to invite countries for his various projects like smart cities, sanitation drive, clean Ganga campaign, among others. 
 
Modi started his tour with China and then visited Mongolia.

Modi’s act of self-praise, woos Indian diaspora in Seoul

An NRI often faces this dilemma when his loyalties are in question. Are you with the country, or are you against it? That’s the most uncomfortable question he needs to answer, every time an NRI voices his concern about his homeland. Because, in simple words, an NRI is often pilloried with the accusation of running away from the country, than serving it. 
 Consider this. The answer is never easy, assumptions are complicated and conclusions on this can never be simpler. ‘It’s complicated’ if you have to answer this question in a facebook style. Broadly classify them into categories and you can find two kinds of <keyword id="58225" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="NRIs">NRIs</keyword>. One that left the country in search of greener pastures, and the other who plan to come back with all the knowledge and help the country turn better. Either way, both categories can be copies of each other, often juxtaposing, intersecting and meeting each other at strategic points. 
 The recent general elections changed their role in a substantial way. PM <keyword id="6354477" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Narendra-Modi">Narendra Modi</keyword>, who comes from the state of Gujarat that presumably has highest population of NRIs living in various foreign countries, has always been engaging with the NRIs. Sometimes, he has made them share holders of his road to occupying the power corridors of central government. He has engaged the Indian diaspora with equal passion as he engaged the voters inland. 
 
His journey from Gujarat CM to being the PM of the world’s biggest democracy, has been very gratifying for those people living away from their homeland, and yet yearn to do something to change the image of India. The India of aspirations and hopes is what Modi stands for. 
Keeping his word, Modi during his initial days in the office, ensured most of the practical assurances he gave to his voters and supporters were acted upon. NRIs , of course, have a bigger role to play in the emerging India than ever before. 
 
The crowd at Madison Square during his recent US visit was a testimony of his popularity even with Indians abroad. Those who left the soil for better future were hoping to hear the man, assure them their share of ‘acche din’ and engage them in a way that is gratifying for both the country and themselves. 
 
While the diaspora as a community is cautious of the radical image that has been associated with him, NRIs as a lot are also desperate to engage with a lot of passion in the future of the country. Salvaging as a word doesn’t quite convey every emotion that’s associated with it. There’s a tangible change in the attitude of NRIs towards their homeland. Some of them want to return home and participate in the bigger and brighter journey the country is going to undertake while the new leadership steers the nation towards a balanced <keyword id="42546" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Growth">growth</keyword>. Economy, money, funds, and business aren’t so dirty as they used to be when India rested on the laurels of socialism smitten ideology! 
 During the first phase of this ‘dream’ turning into reality, <keyword id="2238662" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="PM-Modi">PM Modi</keyword> has initiated talks with many NRI scientists to woo them to return to their homeland and be partners in the success walk. ISRO’s astounding success with Mangalyaan has put India on a trajectory where the world watches its next step in the field of science with awe. Just as he is at home with his ‘Sangh’ image, Modi has always known the role research and science plays in the future of the country. 
 
The Ministry of Science and Technology has already approached many scientists for talks that could lead to some of the brightest minds to return to bolster the image of ‘Bharat’ as much as India. 
 
The recent slogan of ‘Make in India’ is something that puts India on center stage of things that are going to turn out in the near future. 
NRI participation will be sought on all fronts, especially where revitalisation of Indian education system, reinstating of the culture that has seemingly diluted in the recent years, and put a check to the practice of mindless borrowing from western countries. 
 
BJP-led NDA government has come at the most appropriate moment when the ‘Bharat’ will occupy the space of ‘India’ with great trade relations with the rest of the world. Mind you, focus would be a fruitful relationship that will ensure some mutual benefit. 
 
For this, the negotiating power comes from best minds that will be urged to return home and take part in the path to progress. This way, India, the largest democracy in the world, will march towards being a country of high intellect and strategic growth. And, PM Modi will lead the march.

Indian Diaspora May Play Greater Role In Future ‘Bharat’

Tata Group company, <keyword id="6359357" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Titan">Titan</keyword>, will offer shipping services for its jewellery portfolio to customers in its overseas markets like US, UK, Singapore, Australia and the Middle East. The shipping services will be offered through the company’s eCommerce portal that aims to capture the Indian diaspora living abroad. 
	 
	“This new feature has been launched for a selected range of jewellery products, keeping in mind the interest of non-resident Indians (NRIs), People of Indian Origin (PIOs) in purchasing ethnic products and jewellery from India, especially during in the upcoming festive season,” said the company in a statement. 
	 
	The watchmaker has tied-up with international eCommerce payment firm PayPal for payments and United Parcel Service (UPS) for logistics for its international deliveries. The company also plans to scale its overseas shipping to more countries in the future. 
	 The company’s eCommerce portal offers a plethora of products from the house of Tata Group firms which include jewellery, watches, optical eyewear, sunglasses, backpacks, bags, perfumes, wallets and belts among others. The in-house brands that sell their products on the company’s online portal include <keyword id="138037" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Tanishq">Tanishq</keyword>, Titan, <keyword id="746871" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Fastrack">Fastrack</keyword>, Sonata, Xylys, Skinn, Titan Eye+ and international watches licensed under <keyword id="150619" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Helios">Helios</keyword>.

To lure foreign investments, Modi has been bettering relations with the NRIs. It also allows Modi to increase the profile of Indians in the U.S, United Arab Emirates and elsewhere, turning these large communities into politically potent constituencies that can push local politicians and businesses to seek closer economic ties with India. 
 
"This government sees diaspora as a part of the development story and we want them to be informal ambassadors for India in their own country, engaging themselves with local politicians and actors," Chauthaiwale told <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2016-12-20/meet-the-man-leading-modi-s-outreach-to-india-s-huge-diaspora">Bloomberg </a>in an interview. 
 However, everyone isn’t convinced. Experts say Modi's compelling picth is yet to see results. “PM Modi’s reform efforts have yet to compel a significant number of non-resident Indians to invest or return,” <keyword id="1020377" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sreeram-Chaulia">Sreeram Chaulia</keyword>, dean of the Jindal School of International Affairs and author of a book on Modi's foreign policy, told Bloomberg. 
 
“Part of the challenge is that India's economy remains as unpredictable as ever: On Nov. 8, Modi plunged the country into social and economic uncertainty by suddenly invalidating 86 percent of currency in circulation, leading analysts to downgrade growth forecasts. NRIs still look at India with some skepticism, because ease of doing business in India has not improved that much," said Chaulia. 
 The Indian diaspora is a crucial part of India's economy. In 2015, the <keyword id="6354424" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="World-Bank">World Bank</keyword> said the diaspora sent back $72.2 billion in remittances, more than India's bilateral trade with the U.S. and almost as much as the $74.9 billion trade relationship with China. 
 
The diaspora, including groups like the Overseas Friends of BJP, can also help Modi's attempt to change the Indian economy's reputation for corruption and red tape, Chauthaiwale said. 
 "Rebranding was necessary, because when Prime Minister Modi took charge, practically everyone had written off India because of the corruption scandals, nepotism and indecision. People are rediscovering the potential of India, especially the <keyword id="6357804" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="NRI">NRI</keyword> community,” said Chauthaiwale, 
 In an era characterized by a backlash against immigration -- with the election of President-Elect <keyword id="6354484" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Donald-Trump">Donald Trump</keyword>, the Brexit vote and Modi's clash with British Prime Minister <keyword id="368666" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Theresa-May">Theresa May</keyword> over student visas -- India's global workforce is under threat. 
 
Modi is pushing for looser migration rules for India's mobile professionals and Chauthaiwale said the government has made it easier for non-resident Indians to return to India, invest and do philanthropy in their home villages. 
 
Outreach to diaspora groups is a key plank of Modi's foreign policy that "helps India get accepted as a rising power," said Chaulia. 
 
These wealthy communities are also a large source of political donations for the BJP, he added. 
 
"It's a big fundraising mechanism," Chaulia said. "They don't mention it. But it's there." 
 
As the BJP prepares for crucial state elections next year, the party won't end its global outreach, Chauthaiwale said, and will help to coordinate foreign visits for cabinet ministers with newly engaged diaspora groups. 
 
"They have a new sense of identity, and they are now also seeing themselves as a force to be reckoned with," he said.

Indians are not shying away from taking up citizenship of other countries and India is on the top of the list of origin countries of naturalised citizens across the world. In 2015, 1.30 lakh Indians, consisting mostly expatriates on work visas, acquired citizenship of OECD member countries. Meanwhile, India was followed by (1.12 lakh) and the Philippines (94,000). China came fifth with 78,000 opting to relinquish their citizenship. The report mentioned that in 2015, just over 20 lakh people acquired the nationality of an OECD country. This was slightly above (3%) the 2014 figure, even as it remains within the OECD average of the past 10 years. China retained its top position when it came to new immigrants to OECD countries. As per the findings of the report, US, Canada, UK, Australia and Germany continued to be the preferred destinations of Indian migrants. Both China and India continued to be the major source countries for international students. OECD is a global thinktank of 35 member countries, which include European countries, USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and Japan. An earlier <keyword id="845221" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="OECD-report">OECD report</keyword> had pointed out that India had the world's largest diaspora with 156 lakh migrants.

Indians are acquiring nationalities of other nations like never before; top the foreign citizenship list

By Aditi Khanna London, Apr 14 () Over a hundred Indian diaspora organisations here have united to issue an open letter of solidarity with India and urged their compatriots caught up in the current lockdown to show patience to curb the spread of coronavirus pandemic in the country.The 107 organisations, including charities, local temple associations and state-wise representative bodies, lauded the Indian government's efforts during the outbreak as well as worldwide efforts to save precious lives during the pandemic. The letter came as Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the nation on Tuesday to further extend the lockdown in India till May 3. "We would especially like to commend the mammoth efforts of the Indian government and states working under the able leadership of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi for the wide ranging and timely measures to address this issue and to alleviate the inevitable hardship that they will endure during this time of lockdown," the letter stated."We salute the citizens of India for their fortitude, patience, disciple, and social consciousness at this testing time. We appeal to you all, sisters and brothers to continue to keep trust, keep strong and follow the continued advice and guidance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi during these testing times," it added.The Indian High Commission in London, which has been fielding hundreds of queries on a daily basis from Indian nationals stranded in the UK, also reached out to them with a message of reassurance this week."Dear Indians in UK. Indian diaspora groups in UK urge patience amid COVID-19 lockdown

India continues to be the largest country of origin of international migrants with a 17.5 million-strong diaspora across the world, and it received the highest remittance of USD 78.6 billion from Indians living abroad, the UN migration agency said. The International Organisation for Migration said in its 'Global Migration Report 2020' that the number of international migrants in 2019 is now estimated at 270 million and the top destination remains the US, at nearly 51 million. In its latest global report, the IOM noted that the overall figure represents just a tiny fraction of the world's population, although it is a 0.1 per cent increase on the level indicated in its last report, published two years ago. "This figure remains a very small percentage of the world's population (at 3.5 per cent), meaning that the vast majority of people globally (96.5 per cent) are estimated to be residing in the country in which they were born," IOM's Global Migration Report 2020 said. According to the UN agency, more than half of all international migrants (141 million) live in Europe and North America. An estimated 52 per cent are male, and nearly two-thirds of all migrants are looking for work; that's around 164 million people. India continued to be the largest country of origin of international migrants. It had the largest number of migrants living abroad (17.5 million), followed by <keyword id="3746" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Mexico">Mexico</keyword> (11.8 million) and <keyword id="1334" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="China">China</keyword> (10.7 million). The top destination country remained the United States (50.7 million international migrants). The report also noted that international remittances increased to USD 689 billion in 2018. The top three remittance recipients were India (USD 78.6 billion), China (USD 67.4 billion) and Mexico (USD 35.7 billion). The United States remained the top remittance-sending country (USD 68.0 billion) followed by the United Arab Emirates (USD 44.4 billion) and <keyword id="50996" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Saudi-Arabia">Saudi Arabia</keyword> (USD 36.1 billion). Although most migrants travelled to the US, the report confirmed other important migration corridors from poorer countries to richer nations such as those to France, <keyword id="6358826" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Russia">Russia</keyword>, the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia. "This pattern is likely to remain the same for many years into the future, especially as populations in some developing subregions and countries are projected to increase in coming decades, placing migration pressure on future generations", IOM said. In Africa, Asia and Europe, most international migrants stay within their regions of birth, but the majority of migrants from Latin America and the Caribbean and North America do not. Focusing on the Middle East, data showed that Gulf countries have some of the largest numbers of temporary labour migrants in the world, including the United Arab Emirates, where they make up almost 90 per cent of the population. Highlighting how ongoing conflicts and violence in Central African Republic, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Myanmar, <keyword id="294553" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="South-Sudan">South Sudan</keyword>, Syria and <keyword id="44789" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Yemen">Yemen</keyword> have led to massive internal displacement in the last two years, IOM's Internal Displacement Monitoring Centre said that a total of 41.3 million people were forced to flee their homes at the end of 2018 - a record since monitoring began in 1998. Syria has the highest internally population of displaced people, at 6.1 million, followed by Colombia (5.8 million) and the Congo (3.1 million). After nearly nine years of conflict, Syria is also the top refugee-originating country, at well over six million - dwarfing <keyword id="6354541" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="afghanistan">Afghanistan</keyword> (at around 2.5 million) - out of a total of nearly 26 million. Finally, turning to the impact of climate and weather disasters, the report notes that Typhoon Mangkhut in the Philippines contributed to the fact that 3.8 million people were newly displaced there at the end of 2018, the largest number globally. One of the most pressing and urgent challenges facing both the US and India right now is hunger, which is a deciding factor in Indiaspora's new ChaloGive campaign, it added."We are facing an unprecedented situation due to Covid-19," said Anand Rajaraman, a Silicon Valley-based serial entrepreneur and venture capitalist, and an Indiaspora Founders Circle member who, along with his wife Kaushie Adiseshan, is a lead donor for the campaign."The drastic measures necessary to control this pandemic have created special challenges for vulnerable sections of society across the world, particularly in India and the US. High-profile Indian diaspora group raises USD 600K for COVID-19 relief

With globalisation, one might think that humanity is on the move, however, according to the latest estimates by the United Nations, only 3.3% of the world's population (244 million people to be precise) doesn’t live in the where they were born. 
 
Moreover, these people are concentrated in only 20 countries, out of which the United States was the most popular destination, followed by Germany, Russia and Saudi Arabia. 
 The UN report does not distinguish between people who migrates legally and those who don’t, which is why, Saudi Arabia shows up as it hosts an enormous number of migrant workers, unlike the US, which features on the list because of <keyword id="70933" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="immigrants">immigrants</keyword> who legally resettle. 
 
Indians, however, make up the largest diaspora, as there are 16 million Indians scattered across the world, given the country's demographic size (1.2 billion) and youth (median age is around 26). 
 
The effect that it has on the economy can be enormous, as migrants send home remittances, which in some countries exceeds what their governments take in traditional donor aid. 
 
These migrants are mostly young, belonging to the working age, and are a boon to countries like those in Europe where the native population is rapidly aging. 
 
After India, Mexico has the second largest diaspora, with 12 million native Mexicans living in foreign lands, especially in the US.

As Prime Minister Narendra Modi prepares for his first visit to <keyword id="6355478" type="COUNTRY" weightage="40" keywordseo="Australia">Australia</keyword> after having assumed the office, one of the major expectations from Indian diaspora everywhere is, to see him repeat the Madison Sqaure magic that came about during his visit to New York few weeks ago. 
 
And why not! Modi was supported by diaspora in Australia to the hilt during his run up to the race of Prime Minister’s office, almost as much as the Indians living in the US did. 
 
The preparation seems to be very inclusive too. He has created a dedicated Internet page for all people to list out their expectations from this visit. He tweeted a few days ago saying: “I want to hear ideas and thoughts from all of you, including friends in Australia and the Indian community there on my visit.” 
 
When he lands on the Australian soil in November, Modi will address a joint sitting of federal parliament of Australia. 
 
He will be the first Indian Prime Minister to have done so in the last 28 years. The last visit was by the then Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi in 1986. Since then, though India and Australia share a very close bond, no Indian premiers visited the country to take the bilateral relations further. 
 
His visit to Australia will be to participate in G20 summit scheduled to be held in Brisbane, but his visit itself is a singular event that will provide major boost and create synergies that will take the close relationship between the nations to the next level. 
 After participating in the G20 summit, Modi will proceed to Canberra to hold a bilateral meeting with Australian counterpart <keyword id="201673" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Tony-Abbott">Tony Abbott</keyword>. This will be the second significant meeting of the leaders after Abbott visited India last month. During this visit, the two countries entered into a civil nuclear cooperation agreement. 
 
With a prelude like this, the visit is more significant than the excitement that is built around the event. Though Indian Australian community organisations are planning to use this visit to build more solidarity within communities in Syndey, and Melbourne using the famous Olympic Grounds, Modi’s speech will probably be broadcast from the historical Melbourne Cricket Grounds. 
 
As the enthusiasm levels go up on this visit, it is also a rather noteworthy aspect that Australia is shaping up as India’s most important international partners. Australia is increasingly becoming a significant source of India’s energy needs. With the nuclear agreement being firmly in place, India will certainly be very focused on completing the administrative agreements and begin the groundwork for implementation of those. 
 
This can be termed as the event of solidarity since Australia is the current chair for both Indian Ocean Regional Association and Indian Ocean Naval Symposium. Coincidentally, both nations are looking forward to working together on security—especially around the Indian Ocean region. 
 
However, what remains to be seen is whether the Indian Prime Minister will be able to provide any succor to the Indians living in Australia, who have been subject to racial abuse on several instances. The issue will probably resonate during the Prime Minister’s meeting with the diaspora. 
 
Before landing in Australia Modi who soon aims to be a global states man, will also visit Myanmar to discuss a host of security issues. All along this trip, Modi would be sharing stage with regional and world leaders and to brainstorm on pressing security needs and global economic issues. 
 
The meetings will have similar, focused and regionally specific agendas with common concerns. Modi’s government has so far been forthright in its views about ensuring security and stability in surrounding nations for mutual benefit.
