On the final day, the group remained in the area and engaged in rappelling down waterfalls, a thrilling activity that capped off the boot-camp. These activities were not only physical challenges but also served as exercises in "mental resilience, teamwork, and trust." "Throughout the boot-camp, the team showed remarkable growth. Their determination and adaptability were inspiring, and it was gratifying to see how the camp helped them develop, both individually and as a cohesive unit. This mutual exchange of learning and growth is what makes these boot-camps so special." The most successful team in India' Olympic hockey history, the current men's team have 12 medals, including eight gold but they had to wait for 41 years for their last medal, a bronze which came at Tokyo three years ago. "Given the high expectations for the team, especially as bronze medal winners at the Tokyo Games, my advice to them was to focus on their strengths and stay mentally resilient," Horn said. "Overall, my advice centered on mental toughness, team cohesion, and embracing the moment, which are crucial for navigating the challenges of a high-stakes tournament like the Olympics," he added. He recalled his experiences of working with Gautam Gambhir-led KKR. "During the Kolkata Knight Riders' title win, these principles were crucial. Conquering big moments required mental strength and composure under pressure. We broke down challenges into manageable parts, maintained a positive environment, and reinforced the belief that each player's role was vital." Citing examples from his own life, Horn told players that for them, failure means losing a medal but for him, failure could lead to potential loss of life. Dravid had replaced Ravi Shastri after the T20 World Cup in 2021, getting appointed for a two-year term which ended with the ODI World Cup. Under Dravid, India also finished runners-up in the last World Test Championship, losing to Australia in the final. "The Board of Control for Cricket in India announces the extension of contracts for head coach Rahul Dravid and the support staff of Team India (senior men)," the sport's apex body said in a statement. The BCCI engaged in productive discussions with Dravid after the term of his contract ended following the recently-concluded World Cup and unanimously agreed to further the tenure, it added. The selectors in the past have been called various names. However, the Indian acceptance of 'This is the way it is' needs to inspire a change for the better in the future. The BCCI, interestingly, since then has used the existing selectors to select the sides for India's upcoming series. The post of the selectors is now a well-remunerated one and is a full-time job and it, therefore, requires a professional approach. The most important task is in the selection of the selectors. There are certain criteria that are required to be met as regards the age being under 60 years as well as one should have played seven Test matches or 30 First-class matches etc. However, the most important appointment by the BCCI is the appointment of the Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC). The CAC selects the selectors and, therefore, the three members that represent it should have impeccable credentials. They, one feels, should have played over 25 Test matches and have a thorough knowledge of the game and what the position entails. The BCCI are fortunate that they have Roger Binny as their president, Dilip Vengsarkar and Shubhangi Kulkarni in their Apex Committee, three Indian Test cricketers who would be ideal people to select a very competent CAC. The selectors now are a professional outfit, wherein, the earlier requirement of five zonal representatives should be abolished. Earlier, this was necessary as the Ranji Trophy was played initially in their respective zones and thereafter teams qualified for the knock-out stage. In the present format, the zonal basis makes no sense as teams are now placed in groups from any part of India. The five selectors, similar to selection committees in other cricket-playing countries of the world, need to have individuals with the best credentials and capabilities. They could all be from one state or zone if need be. The vast amount of cricket being played domestically, one feels, each selector needs to have his own team of assistant selectors. The job now entails much more than just watching selective matches but a thorough analysis of players and their performance. India is a vast cricket-playing country and the challenge is for one to ensure that every talented Indian cricketer is identified and spotted on time. The talent-spotting programme, which was introduced under Vengsarkar many years ago, was a huge success. A similar approach should be conceptualised, with talent spotters from respective zones reporting to each of the five selectors. This would ensure a better coverage of unearthing aspiring cricketers from the junior to the senior-most level. At present, the IPL and the Under-19 India performers have become the hotbed for quick and early recognition. This is not the best solution as there are several other cricketers playing in the domestic circuit who have not been chosen in the IPL and have long passed the age of 19. A good example of late bloomers is Suryakumar Yadav. SKY, as he is popularly known, is batting like a man possessed, in limited-overs cricket. He has been a part of domestic cricket for many years and is at present 32 years old. He seems ready to play Test cricket, a format that evaded him till now. The time has come for a radical change on the appointment, scope and deliverables of a national cricket selector at all levels of the game. A common structure should be introduced that covers the cricket associations as well. The pink slips and sacking, one feels, is not the best way forward. A selector is, after all, only the facilitator and not the performer. The irony in this case was the facilitators became the fall guys whereas the ones who needed to perform are sitting unreprimanded. This definitely needs a comprehensive change. The successful completion of the Indian Premier League (IPL) and the selling of the media rights for it is the news that <keyword id="1523" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="indian-cricket" source="Orion">Indian cricket</keyword> is celebrating. The most important aspect of any venture is the financials, and the <keyword id="6354756" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="bcci" source="Orion">BCCI</keyword>, one feels, is comfortable with it. The Indian domestic season ended with the completion of the Ranji Trophy. Madhya Pradesh winning it with not a single International player in its midst is a remarkable story. One has to give kudos to each of the playing members of the side, especially, in the way they showcased teamwork and togetherness. One has to admire the coaching skills of Chandrakant Pandit, who has with this win etched himself as the best-ever cricket performance coach in <keyword id="3658" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="india" source="Orion">India</keyword>. Indian cricket may look like it is sailing through calm waters as a cricket establishment. However, one gets the feeling that cricket on the field is in a maze. There seems to be plenty of uncertainty as regards to the players and now with the captain as well. India will be playing an important Test match at Edgbaston in Birmingham today. With a 2-1 lead in the series, India may be in the driver's seat with nothing major to lose. However, a victory against England for all Indians is always a special occasion. Completing a pending series eight and a half months since the last Test match of that series is in itself an amusing story. India and England in the meantime have both changed their captains and their coaches. The momentum that India had gained and established mentally as a superior unit may no longer hold. A one-Test encounter in a foreign land is never a right approach and India have suffered from this in the past. The inaugural World Test Championship, when India played New Zealand, the latter having played a few matches before, was a prime example of a team not acclimatised for the big occasion. The Indian Test team seems to be in the same predicament at present. They have landed after playing two months of T20 cricket into playing the true traditional and conventional form of the game. Test cricket requires one to be patient and draws one into a mental state that is far different from the glamorous hit-or-miss variety of the T20. India are also in a flap as regards captaincy. Jasprit Bumrah has been named captain because of the unavailability of Rohit Sharma. The ideal solution would have been to request Virat Kohli to lead. Bumrah is the leading force for India as a bowler. However, captaincy could become a burdensome issue for him. Furthermore, he has not even captained a First-class side before and, therefore, putting this additional responsibility on his shoulder would not be fair to him. God and lady luck need to shine on India, as without KL Rahul, Rohit Sharma and the lack of confidence in their batters in Cheteshwar Pujara , Virat Kohli, Rishabh Pant and Shreyas Iyer, the blessings of the almighty is all what Indian fans must be praying for. The England side looks confident and cocky having won the series 3-0 against New Zealand. Their new aggressive approach has been a revelation in the way in which they bat. One admires it when it all comes out right but cricket history has shown that it could come to bite you as well. India has the bowling arsenal to demolish England's belief. Rahul Dravid has a major issue and that is to select the ideal and best eleven for the Test match. Apart from Virat Kohli, not a single spot in the batting order is in order. India possesses both pace and good spin-bowling options. The English weather tempts one to go in with an extra pacer but for India to leave out R. Ashwin would be a folly. However, the most concerning part would be Bumrah as a captain and as to how he marshals the side. India, on the other hand have their eyes focused on the T20 World Cup at the end of this year. Australia is the venue and identifying the players for it would be a challenge. The reason being that the IPL throws out players who have performed well in it and they seem to be favoured in the selection of the national side as well. This has led to a huge pool of players, all showcasing similar skills amongst them. Along with the regular established players, identifying the best from the rest is going to be a difficult task. One feels India is over-extending itself by playing two series at one time. An Indian cap has become an everyday affair. A good performance in the IPL and one is a part of one of the Indian side, if not in the senior side, then at least in one of the limited-overs one. None of the other countries send two teams to play two different series. One wonders whether the Indian players will be fresh enough to play the T20 World Cup, given the schedule of matches that they will be playing before it. Giving a cricketer a well-deserved break is not the answer. A team needs to have continuity and camaraderie to understand one another. This comes from playing as many matches together and spending quality time with one another, away from the ground. The Indian team needs to confine itself to a camp where strategies and plans are discussed and decided. This is where India has failed earlier and has, therefore, not won an ICC Trophy since 2014. One hopes Dravid changes it or else we will once again ask "WHY".
