IOC, the nation's largest oil firm, reported 81 per cent drop in standalone net profit in April-June - the first quarter of current 2024-25 fiscal year - to Rs 2,643.18 crore as opposed to a profit of Rs 13,750.44 crore a year back, according to a company filing. Net profit also declined sequentially, when compared to an earning of Rs 11,570.82 crore in March quarter. Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd (HPCL) posted 90 per cent drop in profit to Rs 633.94 crore as compared to an earning of Rs 6,765.50 crore in April-June 2023 and Rs 2,709.31 crore in the preceding March quarter. Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd (BPCL) net profit dropped to Rs 2,841.55 crore in April-June from Rs 10,644.30 crore a year back and Rs 4,789.57 crore in January-March, its filing showed. The three fuel retailers made extraordinary gains from holding petrol and diesel prices despite a drop in cost. The price freeze was justified in the name of recovering losses they had suffered in the previous year when they did not raise retail prices despite a surge in cost. The gains arising from the price freeze were eroded with petrol and diesel prices being cut by Rs 2 per litre each just before general elections and a fall in refining margins. Also, the three had uncompensated <keyword id="20866844" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="LPG-subsidy" source="keywords">LPG subsidy</keyword> - IOC booking under-recovery of Rs 5,156.23 crore in April-June, BPCL Rs 2,015.10 crore and HPCL Rs 2,443.71 crore, according to the filings. As per an order of the oil ministry, when market determined price (MDP) of LPG cylinders is less than its effective cost to customer (ECC), oil marketing companies (OMCs) have to retain the difference in a separate buffer account for future adjustment. However, as on June 30, 2024, the three firms had a net negative buffer as the retail selling price was less than MDP. The three retailers IOC, BPCL and HPCL had reported record profits totalling about Rs 81,000 crore in FY24 (2023-24), which was far more than their annual earnings of Rs 39,356 crore in pre-oil crisis years. This is because they resisted calls to revert to daily price revision and pass on softening in rates to consumers on grounds that prices continue to be extremely volatile - rising on one day and falling on the other - and that they needed to recoup losses incurred in the year, when they kept rates lower than cost. IOC in 2023-24 posted a standalone net profit of Rs 39,618.84 crore compared to Rs 8,241.82 crore in 2022-23. While the company could argue that FY23 was impacted by the <keyword id="21626914" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="oil-crisis" source="keywords">oil crisis</keyword>, the FY24 earnings are higher than even the pre-crisis years - Rs 24,184 crore net profit in 2021-22 and Rs 21,836 crore in 2020-21. BPCL posted a net profit of Rs 26,673.50 crore in FY24, higher than Rs 1,870.10 crore earnings in 2022-23 and Rs 8,788.73 crore in FY22. HPCL's 2023-24 profit of Rs 14,693.83 crore is compared with a Rs 8,974.03 crore loss in FY23 and a profit of Rs 6,382.63 crore in 2021-22, according to the filings. The losses in FY23 had led to the finance minister announcing Rs 30,000 crore equity infusion in the three firms. Mid-way through the year, that support was halved to Rs 15,000 crore. The support was to happen by way of equity infusion via a rights issue. But after the record profits of 2023-24, the equity infusion plan has now been scrapped. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman had on February 1 last year, while presenting the annual Budget for the 2023-24 fiscal (April 2023 to March 2024), announced an equity infusion of Rs 30,000 crore in IOC, BPCL and HPCL to support the three state-owned firm's energy transition plans. In the interim budget that the finance minister presented in February this year ahead of the general elections, the capital support to the three oil companies was halved to Rs 15,000 crore. In the full budget for 2024-25, both plans have been scrapped. While other state-owned oil companies like Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) and GAIL (India) Ltd too have lined up billions of dollars of investment to achieve net-zero carbon emissions, the equity support was limited to the three fuel retailers, which had suffered huge losses in 2022 when they held retail petrol, diesel and cooking gas (LPG) prices despite a spike in raw material (crude oil) prices, following Russia's invasion of Ukraine. The board of IOC and BPCL had last year approved rights issues to raise to Rs 22,000 crore and Rs 18,000 crore, respectively. The government was to participate in the rights issue. The three companies, which control roughly 90 per cent of India's fuel market, 'voluntarily' have not changed petrol, diesel and cooking gas (LPG) prices, resulting in losses when input costs were higher and profits when raw material prices were lower. They posted a combined net loss of Rs 21,201.18 crore during April-September 2022 despite accounting for Rs 22,000 crore announced but not paid LPG subsidy for the previous two years. Subsequent softening of international prices and government giving out LPG subsidies helped IOC and BPCL post annualised profit for 2022-23, but HPCL was in the red. In FY24, things changed dramatically, and the three firms posted record earnings.

Gen AI enables automated code modernization, which will drive a major demand for Indian IT services to upgrade these systems, creating a long-term revenue stream. Looking ahead, the report forecasts a strong start to FY25 for Indian IT companies, with growth driven by an optimistic outlook for the Banking, Financial Services, and Insurance (BFSI) sector, increasing technology spending, and large deal ramp-ups.

Gen AI to unlock a "mammoth incremental opportunity" for Indian IT services: Report

In Maharashtra’s Thane district, police have registered a case of alleged fraud involving two construction company owners accused of deceiving a family of ₹1.2 crore. The incident came to light after a 28-year-old woman from Thane’s Rabodi area lodged a complaint against the two accused, who are brothers. The accused allegedly persuaded the woman, her mother, and her sister to invest the substantial sum in their construction company based in Mumbai’s Bandra area. Promises were made of a significant payout within five years or, alternatively, the option of acquiring two or three apartments in the city’s prime real estate zone. According to the complaint, the woman’s family entered the deal on December 31, 2022, convinced by assurances of either a return of ₹3 crore over five years or property options in Bandra. To meet the required investment amount, the family borrowed funds from various sources, entrusting their money with the accused based on the lucrative promises. The police official handling the case noted that the family, enticed by the seemingly profitable terms, had not foreseen the outcome that would follow. In May 2023, however, when the family attempted to reclaim their funds and the anticipated profit, the accused allegedly declined the request. The complainant stated that the brothers not only refused to pay but also reportedly threatened the family, citing powerful connections that would shield them from legal repercussions. This behaviour alarmed the family, leading them to seek legal recourse. The Rabodi police have filed a case against the accused under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, including Section 420 for cheating, Section 406 for criminal breach of trust, and Section 506 for criminal intimidation. Additionally, charges were filed under Section 34, indicating common intention, along with relevant provisions of the Maharashtra Protection of Interest of Depositors Act. The case highlights the dangers that investors may face when lured by high-return promises in unregulated sectors. Fraudulent schemes in real estate and construction have been known to target individuals and families looking for profitable investments, often leaving them with financial losses and emotional distress. Even with hefty incentives, incumbent OEMs are still unprofitable,” the report stated. The Quick Service Restaurant (QSR) operator had reported a loss of Rs 1.59 crore in April-June FY24, according to a regulatory filing by the Jaipuria family-promoted firm on Monday. Revenue from operations in the quarter was Rs 1,221.90 crore as against Rs 846.63 crore in the year-ago period. Its "consolidated EBITDA for the quarter closed at Rs 220 crore, with margin at 18.3 per cent - an improvement of 1.7 per cent compared to the previous quarter," said an earning statement from the company. Total expenses in June quarter increased 42.9 per cent to Rs 1,201.28 crore. During the quarter, Devyani International Ltd (DIL) added 54 stores with an aim to reach consumers in its under-penetrated markets, it said. "With this addition, DlL's total store count moves to 1,836 stores as of June 30, 2024," it said adding it has plans to open 250-275 new stores in FY25. It is on track to meet the target of 2,000 stores across its brand portfolio within the current financial year, said DIL which also owns and operates South Indian vegetarian food QSR chain Vaango. The company continues to focus on "offering value-driven options to consumers to navigate market dynamics and drive growth. The company introduced innovative marketing campaigns and promotional deals across its range of brands, enabling it to capitalise on seasonal trends," it said. In June quarter, DIL opened 20 new restaurants for KFC taking the total count to 617. While for Pizza Hut, it added 15 stores in India, taking the total count to 570. It added 11 stores of Costa Coffee and by the end of June 2024, DIL was operating 192 stores. DIL also operates 40 stores of KFC in Nigeria and 28 stores of KFC and Pizza Hut in Nepal. It was also operating 295 stores of KFC in Thailand by the end of the June quarter. "We witnessed an improved performance for DIL in Q1, driven by seasonality and cost leverage from better ADS across our businesses. Our Thailand business also demonstrates growth with new store openings and a customer delight strategy," Chairman Ravi Jaipuria said. Shares of DIL were trading at Rs 178.60 apiece on BSE, down 1.27 per cent from the previous close. Our institutional broking and investment banking franchise has significantly improved their competitive position with stellar operating performance. Indian capital market businesses will continue to witness secular growth given multiple tailwinds over the next decade," "Venkataraman, Chairman, IIFL Securities, said. The company's board of directors in its meeting in March approved an interim dividend of Rs 3 per equity share of the face value of Rs 2 each for the <keyword id="19910979" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="financial-year" source="keywords">financial year</keyword> 2023-2024. "The same has been paid in compliance with the provision of the Companies Act, 2013 and is considered as final," it added. For the financial year 2023-24, the company said its net profit reached to an all-time high of Rs 512.1 crore from Rs 248 crore in the preceding fiscal and total income stood at Rs 2,231.3 crore, marking a 63 per cent year-on-year jump from FY23. IIFL Securities Q4 profit more than doubles to ₹180 crore

The Indian Energy Exchange (<keyword id="19906388" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="IEX" source="keywords">IEX</keyword>) has posted a 9.5 per cent rise in <keyword id="20569223" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="consolidated-profit" source="keywords">consolidated profit</keyword> after tax at Rs 96.7 crore for the March 2024 quarter on account of higher <keyword id="19942932" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="income" source="keywords">income</keyword>. It had clocked Rs 88.34 crore profit after tax (PAT) during the fourth quarter of the last fiscal, the company said in an exchange filing on Wednesday. The company's total income rose to Rs 149.28 crore, from Rs 129.58 crore in January-March FY23. During the period under review, its expenses stood at Rs 22.65 crore, as against Rs 19.52 crore a year ago. In FY24, the consolidated PAT rose 14.7 per cent to Rs 350.78 crore, from Rs 305.88 crore in FY23. Income for the full year was at Rs 550.84 crore, up from Rs 474.10 crore. The Board of Directors of the company announced a final dividend of Rs 1.50 for FY24. Sharing business updates, IEX said 110.1 billion units of electricity traded on its platform during the fiscal year 2023-24, registering a year-on-year (y-o-y) increase of 13.7 per cent. The DAM (day-ahead market) prices on the exchange declined to Rs 5.24/unit in FY24, lower by 12 per cent y-o-y compared with Rs 5.94/unit in FY23. During <keyword id="20028449" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Q4" source="keywords">Q4</keyword> FY24, IEX achieved 30.1 BU volume across all segments, registering an increase of 15.5 per cent on y-o-y basis. This volume comprises 25.9 BU from the conventional power market segment, 1 BU from the green market segment, and 32.48 lac Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) (equivalent to 3.2 BU). REC traded volume in the fourth quarter of 2023-24 increased by 98 per cent on y-o-y basis. The DAM prices on the exchange lowered to Rs 4.89/unit in January-March 2024, a decline of 20 per cent y-o-y compared with Rs 6.08/unit a year ago. IEX Q4 net profit grows 9.5% to ₹97 crore

Online food delivery firm <keyword id="19901323" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Zomato" source="keywords">Zomato</keyword> Ltd on Monday reported a consolidated net profit of Rs 175 crore in the March quarter on the back of higher revenue. The company had posted a consolidated net loss of Rs 188 crore in the same quarter last fiscal, Zomato Ltd said in a regulatory filing. Consolidated revenue from operations stood at Rs 3,562 crore. It was Rs 2,056 crore in the year-ago period, it added. Total expenses were at Rs 3,636 crore. The company posted its total expenses at Rs 2,431 crore in the corresponding period a year ago, it said. For the fiscal ended on March 31, 2024, the consolidated net profit was Rs 351 crore. The company had posted a consolidated net loss of Rs 971 crore in the previous fiscal ended on March 31, 2023, the filing said. In FY24, consolidated revenue from operations stood at Rs 12,114 crore. It was at Rs 7,079 crore. The results for the year ended March 31, 2024, are not comparable with the year ended March 31, 2023, due to the acquisition of Blink Commerce Pvt Ltd (formerly known as Grofers India Pvt Ltd) in June 2022, the filing said. Zomato posts Q4 consolidated net profit at ₹175 crore

Its revenue from operations for Q4FY24 came in at Rs 25,959 crore, up 11 per cent over the year-ago period. The net profit was pegged at Rs 5,337 crore for just-ended quarter, up from Rs 4,716 crore in the fourth quarter of FY23, which translated into a 13.16 per cent increase. According to a BSE filing by the company, for the full FY24, the net profit stood at Rs 20,466 crore, which was 12.4 per cent higher than that of FY23. The revenue for full fiscal ended March 2024 was Rs 1,00,119 crore, up 10.2 per cent over the preceding fiscal.
