In an interaction with PTI, Mercedes-Benz India MD and CEO Santosh Iyer said the luxury car segment is set for its best-ever performance this year with <keyword id="19894908" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Festive-season" source="keywords">festive season</keyword> offtakes playing a major role in the overall performance. He noted that the festive season generally gives high double-digit <keyword id="20040491" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sales-growth" source="keywords">sales growth</keyword>, helping the automaker to average out single-digit growth of the earlier quarter. "So in that sense, on an average, then we are able to get a double-digit growth during the festive season," Iyer stated. Elaborating on the overall industry, which still remains a very small part of the overall passenger vehicle market in the country, he said the segment is headed for record volumes this fiscal year but not all players are witnessing growth." Some (companies) are even degrowing, some are flat and they are facing headwinds, but because we are the primary player in the market, we still feel the luxury car market should cross 50,000-51,000 cars this year," Iyer said. The luxury car market in India currently remains very small accounting for less than 2 % of the overall passenger vehicle market in the country. Audi India Head Balbir Singh Dhillon said the automaker anticipates positive buying trends to continue during the festive season. May Auto Sales – Tata Motors and Hyundai continue to fight for the second spot as car sales grow by 4%

It can be gruelling to choose between a gourmet meal and your mom’s homemade biryani — more often than not, the familiar wins out. Despite the buzz around electric vehicles, a growing number of drivers in India and the world are hitting the brakes on their electric vehicle (EV) journey and revving up their old petrol and diesel cars. But why are we witnessing this unexpected switch, and what does it spell for the future of driving? <h2>Waning EV enthusiasm</h2>A recent Park+ survey reported that 51% of Indian EV car owners expressed a desire to return to internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles. This statistic — despite the study’s limited sample size of just 500 EV owners — is certainly surprising, given the evident success of India's push toward electrification with the attractive FAME and EMPS schemes. This isn’t even a special case; a similar survey revealed that 29% of EV-owners shared the same sentiment internationally — perhaps not that large of a number, but certainly not an unnoticeable one either. The number is even higher when you look at just the United States. According to McKinsey &amp; Co., 46% of US <keyword id="22369438" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="electric-vehicle-owners" source="keywords">electric vehicle owners</keyword> are “very” likely to purchase a gas-powered vehicle the next time. <h2><keyword id="21396729" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="range-anxiety" source="keywords">Range anxiety</keyword> remains a major roadblock</h2>While the world has seen massive leaps in EV tech over the past few years, many still complain that the primary concerns still prevail. For instance, several cite the persisting inadequacy of <keyword id="20111395" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="charging-infrastructure" source="keywords">charging infrastructure</keyword> as a primary reason for the shift back to ICE vehicles. While urban areas in developed countries may boast a fair number of charging stations, the time taken to charge and faulty stations remain significant problems for a daily EV long-distance commuter. For instance, one user sparked up a conversation on Reddit after explaining that they had begun to consider moving back to a hybrid of regular gas vehicles since they wanted to explore the countryside. This is a sentiment that reflects broader consumer concerns that influence purchasing decisions. “Once I was in Big Bear there was only two DC chargers in town, one of which was out of order. There was a line to use them. It was overall an unpleasant experience and took up a lot of time we could have spent actually enjoying Big Bear,” another responded, noting that this was just one of many unpleasant experiences they’ve experienced with the charging infrastructure. “Most of the time at least one or two chargers are out of order and it's just a pain to charge. Long queues at charging stations, inconsistent availability, and longer charging times compared to refuelling <keyword id="21283001" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ICE-cars" source="keywords">ICE cars</keyword> are major deterrents for the average Indian EV consumer. Further, range anxiety continues to be a significant barrier, especially in countries like India that value long-distance trips. Despite advancements in <keyword id="20172158" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="battery-technology" source="keywords">battery technology</keyword>, two-wheeler EVs boast a maximum range of only 200-300 kilometres, while cars have a 300-400 kilometre range. <h2>Cost and practicality concerns</h2>The initial cost of EVs also remains higher than that of their ICE counterparts, despite decreasing battery prices. For many consumers, especially in price-sensitive markets like India, this cost difference is substantial. For instance, Ford and General Motors have recently announced a downscaling of their EV production plans due to slower-than-expected market uptake. Even <keyword id="107096" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="tesla" source="Orion">Tesla</keyword> — the very company that arguably made EVs “cool” in the first place — has found itself in an awkward position having to fan some flames away. Not only is the Musk-led company struggling to entice more people into buying their cars, studies have also shown that car buyers are connecting better with EVs built by more traditional automakers than Tesla owners. The company reported a 23% year-on-year growth in shipments, driven by its streamlined and focused portfolio. Vivo has emerged as a close second with a market share of 18.8% in Q2 2024, up from 17.4% in Q2 2023. The company maintained the second spot. Samsung, which was at the top spot in Q2 2023 with an 18.4% market share was pushed to the third spot with a market share of 18.1%. Realme and Vivo maintained the fourth and fifth spots with a market share of 12.5% and 11.4% respectively. <h2>Indians moving towards <keyword id="19914395" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="premium-smartphones" source="keywords">premium smartphones</keyword></h2>Indian consumers are moving towards premium smartphones and this was evident in Q2 2024 as the value of smartphones shipped reached a new high for Q2 despite a decline in shipments. The domestic PV sales increased to 401,447 units in October 2024, recording a modest 1.8% growth year-on-year. <h2>Automakers report a decline</h2>Maruti Suzuki, the country’s biggest automaker took a hit in October 2024, with 1,59,591 cars sold, down from 1,68,047 cars sold in October 2023, recording a 5% year-on-year decline in sales. However, the company reported strong exports, allowing it to record its highest-ever overall monthly sales at 2,06,434 vehicles, registering a 4% year-on-year growth. September Auto sales – Automakers report a decline, Mahindra and Mahindra overtakes Tata Motors

Moreover, the strength of the American currency in the overseas market and elevated crude oil prices weighed on the local unit and restricted the upmove. At the interbank foreign exchange market, the local unit opened at 83.56 and gained further to trade at 83.54 against the greenback in initial deals, registering an increase of 5 paise from its previous closing level. On Tuesday, the rupee settled for the day lower by 9 paise at 83.59 against the US dollar. "The <keyword id="20045514" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-rupee" source="keywords">Indian rupee</keyword> has remained steady despite a strengthening US Dollar driven by rising US bond yields and diminished expectations of Fed rate cuts following robust US employment figures," CR Forex Advisors MD Amit Pabari said. Pabari further said that falling fiscal deficits, stronger growth and reduced political uncertainties, with Narendra Modi's coalition government taking charge, have provided some support for the rupee. "The Reserve Bank of India, armed with substantial reserves of USD 651 billion, stands ready to intervene to prevent significant rupee depreciation," he said. Meanwhile, the dollar index, which gauges the greenback's strength against a basket of six currencies, was trading 0.03 per cent higher at 105.25. Brent crude futures, the global oil benchmark, rose 0.41 per cent to USD 82.26 per barrel. On the domestic equity market, the 30-share BSE Sensex was trading 269.20 points, or 0.35 per cent higher at 76,725.79 points. The broader NSE Nifty advanced 92.60 points or 0.4 per cent to 23,357.45 points in initial trade. Hyundai, which entered the Indian market in 1996 is one of the top automakers in India, moving between the second and third spots. The company emerged as the second biggest automaker in Hyundai. Since it entered the Indian market, the company has sold over 80 lakh cars in the country. Hyundai intends to establish India as a global manufacturing and export hub for the company and this might be an initial step in this direction. Bids can be made in a lot size of 7 shares or multiples of 7 shares. The IPO opens on October 15 and will close on October 18. While the allotment will be finalised on October 18, the shares will be listed on the stock exchange on October 22. At the upper end of the price band, Hyundai Motor India will be valued at $18 billion (approx. ₹1.6 lakh crore), which is around 40% of its parent company, Hyundai Global’s $45 billion valuation. As it is entirely an OFS, the company won’t receive any funds and all the funds raised will go to Hyundai Global. However, the company has said that part of the funds will be allocated towards research and development, especially in electric vehicles (EVs) and hybrid technologies. The company has reserved 7.78 lakh shares with a value of ₹131 to ₹138 crore for employees. India is the first country outside the US to start the <keyword id="20805504" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="local-production" source="keywords">local production</keyword> of the seven-seater electric SUV. EQS SUV 580 4MATIC is the second model, after the EQS sedan, to be locally produced at company's Pune-based manufacturing plant. "This will be our sixth EV in India, and the second car to be locally produced in India. We are also proud that India becomes the first market out of the US to locally manufacture the EQS," Mercedes-Benz India Managing Director and CEO Santosh Iyer told PTI in an interaction. The move to manufacture the product locally outlines the company's commitment to electrification and increasing product portfolio offering choices to customers, he added. "EQS SUV's localisation underpins our deep commitment to grow the Indian <keyword id="23188213" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="luxury-electric-car" source="keywords">luxury electric car</keyword> market and reinforce our commitment for a greener and sustainable future," Iyer said. The move also supports the government's vision of Make-in-India, he said. Iyer said local production has led to a significant advantage in terms of pricing the electric SUV. The introductory price of EQS SUV 580 4MATIC starts at Rs 1.41 crore which should also make a lot of customers shift to EVs much faster in terms of transition, he said. When asked about the demand for green vehicles, Iyer said the sales of EVs were growing in the country with even high-end products finding acceptance. "The EQA sedan which was introduced in India around 18 months back, we have sold more than 500 cars. It's a car costing more than Rs 1.6 crore. Our total penetration of EVs is 5 per cent today, it's growing. For sure, customer acceptance is there," he stated. Iyer noted that the company remains committed to offer top-end luxury EV products offering higher range in the market. He noted that there may be more opportunities in the entry EV segment but the focus of the company firmly remains on bringing luxury products in the market. "To bring products at lower price points, that is not our current strategy," Iyer said. The company aims to offer products with higher driving range, a factor that leads to bigger battery and escalation in price, he added. The EQS SUV 580 4MATIC is India's longest range electric SUV with ARAI certified range of 809 kms. Iyer said the company remains committed to the Indian market and has announced an additional investment of Rs 200 crore earlier towards manufacturing operations, new product start-ups and digitisation of manufacturing processes. The company till date has invested over Rs 3,000 crore in India, he added.
