She also said that she was not going to judge if Khelif should be allowed to compete at the Olympics. "I felt a severe pain in my nose, and with the maturity of a boxer, I said 'enough,' because I didn't want to, I did not want to, I could not finish the match," Carini said. "I am not here to judge or pass judgment. If an athlete is this way, and in that sense, it is not right or it is right, it is not up to me to decide. I just did my job as a boxer. IOC defended the rights of Khelif and Lin Yu-ting, another boxer under scrutiny due to failing an unspecified eligibility requirement in a biochemical test, to compete in the Olympics. Replying to the controversy, the IOC said on Thursday in a statement, "All athletes participating in the boxing tournament of the Olympic Games Paris 2024 comply with the competition's eligibility and entry regulations, as well as all applicable medical regulations set by the Paris 2024 Boxing Unit (PBU). As with previous Olympic boxing competitions, the gender and age of the athletes are based on their passports." "These rules also applied during the qualification period, including the boxing tournaments of the 2023 European Games, Asian Games, Pan American Games and Pacific Games, the ad hoc 2023 African qualifying tournament in Dakar (SEN) and two world qualifying tournaments held in Busto Arsizio (ITA) and Bangkok (THA) in 2024, which involved a total of 1,471 different boxers from 172 National Olympic Committees (NOCs), the Boxing Refugee Team and Individual Neutral Athletes, and featured over 2,000 qualification bouts," the IOC statement read. The IOC said that the athletes in question had been subjects of an arbitrary decision by the International Boxing Association earlier. "We have seen in reports misleading information about two female athletes competing at the Olympic Games Paris 2024. The two athletes have been competing in international boxing competitions for many years in the women's category, including the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020, International Boxing Association (IBA) World Championships and IBA-sanctioned tournaments. These two athletes were the victims of a sudden and arbitrary decision by the IBA. Towards the end of the IBA World Championships in 2023, they were suddenly disqualified without any due process," the IOC said. "According to the IBA minutes available on their website, this decision was initially taken solely by the IBA Secretary General and CEO. The IBA Board only ratified it afterwards and only subsequently requested that a procedure to follow in similar cases in the future be established and reflected in the IBA Regulations. The minutes also say that the IBA should "establish a clear procedure on gender testing. The current aggression against these two athletes is based entirely on this arbitrary decision, which was taken without any proper procedure - especially considering that these athletes had been competing in top-level competition for many years. Such an approach is contrary to good governance," the IOC added. The debutant duo of sixth seed Manju Rani (48kg) and Jamuna Boro (54kg) along with last edition's bronze-medallist and third seed Lovlina Borgohain (69kg) made the medal rounds along side Mary Kom to ensure that India equalled their last edition's performance in terms of number of medals won. The third-seeded Mary Kom defeated a spirited rival in Colombia's Valencia Victoria, fetching a unanimous 5-0 verdict to make the last-four stage. Rani stunned top seed and last edition's bronze-medallist Kim Hyang Mi of South Korea 4-1, while Boro, an Assam Rifles employee, got the better of Germany's Ursula Gottlob by a similar margin after draining showdowns. Borgohain, on the other hand, pulled off a facile 4-1 triumph over Poland's sixth-seeded Karolina Koszewska. "I am very happy to have secured a medal but I would be looking to make it better by reaching the finals," the 36-year-old Mary Kom said after the bout. "It was a good bout for me and I will now try to improve on this performance in the semifinals," she added. Awaiting Mary Kom in the semifinals on Saturday, after a rest day on Friday, is second-seeded Turk Busenaz Cakiroglu, who is the reigning European Championships and European Games gold-medallist. Entering into this edition, Mary Kom had six gold and a silver in her kitty but this is the first time, she has secured a world medal in the 51kg category. She had finished a quarterfinalist in this division in the past. The latest achievement has only added to her ever-growing legend. Besides six world titles, Mary Kom's incredible career is also studded with an Olympic bronze medal (2012), five Asian titles, gold medals at the Asian Games and the Commonwealth Games, besides numerous other international top finishes. This year alone, she won gold medals at the India Open in Guwahati and President's Cup in Indonesia. She is also a member of the Rajya Sabha.  Vijender Singh is an Indian boxer. He had won the bronze medal in Beijing olympics in 2008. Vijender Singh, born on 29th October 1985, is the current WBO Asia Pacific Super Middleweight Champion. He won the bronze medal in 2006 Asian games. Vijender Singh has also been awarded with Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna - India's highest sporting honour and Padma Shri -- the fourth highest civilian honour.

Sacheti said India boxing's High Performance Director Santiago Nieva, who is now in Patiala after completing a 14-day self-isolation period in Delhi, will be conducting classes for men. The classes for women will be conducted by their high performance director Rafaelle Bergamasco. "Santiago is the only boxing coach who is in Patiala right now. He will have access to the boxing hall where he will educate the boxers on technicalities. The idea is to keep them connected and aware," he said. "We hope things improve and the lockdown ends but we can't start from the scratch when that happens. We have to have something going so that when it ends, there is a seamless transtion," he added. India booked an unprecedented nine Olympic slots at the Asian qualifiers in Jordan earlier this month. The national lockdown has put a halt to all sporting activities across the country. Mary Kom and other Olympic-bound boxers will train online during nationwide lockdown

One look at his long white beard and weak frame, and you could just dismiss <keyword id="3392875" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Kaur-Singh">Kaur Singh</keyword> as just another small-time farmer from Punjab. However, this farmer, from Malwa, is the only Indian boxer who has competed against boxing legend <keyword id="84333" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Muhammad-Ali">Muhammad Ali</keyword>. 
 
How's that? 
 
The Arjuna awardee Olympian boxed against Ali an exhibition bout in 1980, but has been forgotten now, even as the Rio Olympics are about to begin, and the players could definitely benefit from some motivation. 
 
Kaur Singh, who got the Arjuna Award in 1982 and the Padmashri in 1983, has also recieved the Vishisht Sewa Medal (VSM) in 1988 from the Indian Army. When he was at the peak of his career, he had won the gold medal in the men's heavyweight category for India, in the 1982 Asian Games held inNew Delhi. 
 
However, somewhere along this stupendous journey, he lost his faith in sports, also disallowing his children from taking up sports as a career, maybe because he wanted them to have a safe future, unlike his own. 
 
It was after participating in the Los Angeles Olympics in 1984 that ​he hung up his boxing gloves, and now lives in his native village Khanal Khurd in Sangrur, as a farmer tending to his four-acre farm. It's been 34 years that he won the gold medal in the New Delhi Asiad and was promised a cash reward of Rs 1 lakh, but Singh is yet to get the money from the Punjab government. 
 
"This is the biggest drawback behind our failure to get the right talent in sports," he told TNN." "The government needs to stand by sportspersons in their thick and thin," he said. 
 
After he retired from the Army, he returned to his village, where he now eanrs a modest living by farming. Even when he developed a heart condition that needed a stent to be installed in his body, the state government didn't come forward to help the former superstar of Indian boxing. It was the Army that paid the fee for his treatment. "No government ever gave me recognition in the last three decades," he says. 
 It's not only boxing that Singh made his name in. He was given a <keyword id="401558" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Sena-Medal">Sena medal</keyword> for his exemplary bravery in the India-Pakistan war in the Barmer sector in Rajasthan. 
 
In his short career, he won six gold medals in the international competitions, including the Asian Games of 1982. 
 
However, he was not always interested in boxing. In fact, it was only after he had joined the army that he came to know of boxing as a sport, taking it up professionally in 1977, competing in the senior national boxing championship held in 1979. He won a gold medal there, in the heavyweight category.

Vijender Singh conquered the amateur boxing arena and now all eyes are set on him once again to see how India’s ace boxer will fair in professional boxing as he makes his debut on Saturday (October 10). 
 
At the moment when anxiety and frenzy is taking over boxing fans in India, Singh is as cool as a cucumber and is just focussing on the game. 
 
In an exclusive interview to Business Insider, Singh, who is in Manchester, said this is the best time of his life and currently he is excited and focussed for his pro-boxing debut. 
 
“I have mixed feelings actually. There is no pressure on me, it’s been a little over a month now that I have been training and I am geared up for my pro debut. There is, of course, a responsibility on me but at present I want to stay focussed as I have been waiting for this moment for quite sometime now,” said 29-year-old Singh. 
 
Singh, who was expected to represent India in 2016 Rio Olympics, had announced his plans to turn professional in June and signed a multi-year promotional agreement with Queensberry Promotions. 
 
When asked what drove him to take the decision, the boxer from Bhiwani said, “I only know boxing and the sport is my life. Apart from boxing, I don’t know anything. I have won every prestigious medal in amateur boxing and in pro also I will leave a mark. I want to perform at a global level and work hard and box hard.” 
 
In his pro debut, Singh will fight England’s Sonny Whiting, who has an overall record of 2-1 in pro boxing and has claimed he will put Singh through hell. 
 
To this, Singh said, “Indian boxers are the best and he will get to see that on Saturday. I just want to wish him good luck and we will see who wins. I am going to box hard.” 
 
Singh has been training under coach Lee Beard along with three others, Jack Catterall, Adrian Gonzalez and Jimmy Kelly. 
 
Talking about challenges he’s been facing in the UK, Singh said it’s been a month only and he is still adjusting. 
 
“Everything is new here. New people, new fellow boxers, new trainers and there is no Indian. There is a sea change. Training is also difficult, language and press conferences are also not so easy. So, I am still adjusting here,” he said. 
 
Singh is working hard to shine out in his pro career and said there was no shortcut to hard work. 
 
The boxing match titled as ‘World War III’ will be telecasted live and exclusive on Sony Six at 10.20 pm IST. 
 
“I am happy that my match will be telecasted and cheers in India will be heard till Manchester,” added Singh. 
 
Asked if he would support other Indian boxers to turn pro, Singh said, “I will definitely support them. If my Indian boxers need anything, I am here for them. I will give my unconditional support and full guidance.” 
 
The set of rules in Amateur are different from pro. In pro-boxing, there is no mercy, among other rules.

Vijender Singh opens up about why his going professional was the game changer for boxing in India

New Delhi, Jul 13 () A doctor attached with the Indian boxing team on Monday tested positive for COVID-19 even as all the pugilists who have assembled for training in Patiala came out negative but stared at a possible suspension of the proposed camp due to the development. The 11 boxers, including Asian Games champion and world silver-medallist Amit Panghal, will be retested as they were at the same quarantine facility with the doctor. "Dr Amol (Patil) was in quarantine in a centre outside the main campus of national Institute of Sports (NIS) Patiala. As per protocol, before he is allowed to enter main hostel and sports arena, he was given the COVID test on the 7th day (of quarantine) and tested positive," the Sports Authority of India said in a statement to when asked about the development. "He has been shifted to the state-run COVID centre. Those who are identified as primary contact will be tested tomorrow. The quarantine period for all persons staying in the same quarantine facility has been extended by one week. The centre has been sterilised as per protocol," it added. The boxers have, however, tested negative but will undergo a second round of testing on Tuesday. "Dr Patil is completely asymptomatic, not even mild symptoms are there. He will recover soon enough," said a source close to the team. Patil has been a regular in Indian boxing and travelled with the team to the 2018 Commonwealth Games and the world championships last year. The pugilists were due to start training later this month or early in August after the Boxing Federation of India got the SAI nod to conduct the national camp amid the pandemic. The conduct of the camp is currently being overseen by SAI after the Delhi High Court stayed the sports ministry's recognition to 57 national federations including the BFI. Nine Indian boxers have qualified for the Olympics, postponed to 2021 due to the pandemic. They are -- Amit Panghal (52kg), Manish Kaushik (63kg), Vikas Krishan (69kg), Ashish Kumar (75kg), Satish Kumar (+91kg), MC Mary Kom (51kg), Simranjit Kaur (60kg), Lovlina Borgohain (69kg), and Pooja Rani (75kg). Of these, Mary Kom continues to train at her home in Delhi as attending the camp was optional. As per the SAI's safety protocols for training, boxers have been barred from doing human sparring, told not to access the ring and use their personal equipment for all forms of training. They were to be offered cover for COVID-19 in their medical insurance, as per the SOP made by the BFI.
