The pocket-sized device can <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ai-device-tech-replace-rabbit-r1-sold-out-2024-1"><u>perform tasks on users' apps via voice controls</u></a>. In January, its first batch of units — 10,000 devices priced at $199 a pop — sold out in just 24 hours.</p><p>According to AI-gadget evangelists like Khosla, these devices will flip the script on human-computer interactions. Instead of figuring out how to work the newest app or tool, the AI will learn how to navigate around <em>you</em>.</p><div type="image" title="Rabbit R1" height="2880" width="2880" msid="108145961" hostid="261" sizebytes="70898"></div><p><strong>Still, there are reasons to be skeptical about AI devices.</strong></p><p>Humane's Ai Pin, which can project text onto users' hands and translate voice messages, didn't get a warm welcome <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ai-pin-humane-draws-skepticism-tech-iphone-replacement-2023-11"><u>when it launched late last year</u></a>.</p><p>The hardware business is difficult, especially since the <a target="_blank" rel="noopener" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/guides/tech/saas"><u>SaaS-ification</u></a> of the world means investors often prefer companies with recurring revenue streams, rather than ones that rely on one-off sales.</p><p>But the biggest criticism is much more straightforward:</p><p><em>Why do I need an AI gadget when I already have a very powerful device in my pocket at all times?</em></p><p>That was the perspective of one developer I texted, who said there wasn't much interest in the trend in their network. They also pointed to rumors that hardware giant Apple is set to make big announcements about AI, which CEO Tim Cook <a target="_blank" href="https://www.cnbc.com/2024/02/28/apple-annual-shareholder-meeting-2024-ai-investments.html"><u>hinted at during the company's annual shareholder meeting</u></a>.</p><p>In the meantime, though, some of tech's biggest names clearly believe AI gadgets are the future. Salesforce's Marc Benioff and OpenAI's Sam Altman are both backers of Humane, while Khosla Ventures invested in Rabbit.</p><h2>3 things in markets</h2><div type="image" title="Paul Krugman" height="650" width="1300" msid="108145963" hostid="261" sizebytes="52608"></div><ol><li><p><strong>Don't trust the "vibecession." </strong>The bad vibes spreading through the economy are unwarranted, according to <a target="_blank" rel="noopener" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/us-economy-outlook-recession-inflation-grocery-prices-vibecession-paul-krugman-2024-2"><u>Nobel laureate Paul Krugman</u></a>. Big-name investors are betting AI gadgets could change the way we interact with tech

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Cedric Thompson is African American and his wife Charlotte is half-Filipina and half-white.</li><li>When the Thompsons were choosing baby names, they took a DNA test to learn more about their ancestral heritage.</li></ul><p><em>This is an as-told-to essay based on a conversation with Cedric Thompson, a former NFL athlete, content creator, and father of three. The essay has been edited for length and clarity.</em></p><p>I met my wife Charlotte in freshman year of college. We dated for a while before eventually getting married. Charlotte is half-Filipina, half-Caucasian, and I'm full African American — and there were definite challenges at first because of our different backgrounds.</p><p>I grew up in the inner city of Los Angeles in a mostly Black and brown neighborhood. There's a certain energy and demeanor that we have: The way I was raised was based on survival and doing your best to make it, which was <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/us-systemic-racism-in-charts-graphs-data-2020-6">inextricably tied to being an African American man</a>. Charlotte grew up in a much safer environment and didn't have to deal with those biases.</p><p>We both began to more seriously think about my Blackness when I came to Minnesota, where I am now and where there's more of a white population. The <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/category/george-floyd">murder of George Floyd</a> was one of the first times I realized, "I really am of a race that is not treated the same." My wife became more aware of it too, being married to a Black man. That's something we've been ironing out the past couple of years.</p><h2><strong>Navigating an intercultural marriage</strong></h2><p>I started documenting my life on YouTube while I was playing for the NFL. A video Charlotte and I posted after I was released from the Minnesota Vikings went semi-viral, and I realized, "Wow, people really have a problem with us being an interracial couple." Some commenters had an issue with me not dating a Black woman.</p><p>But my parents didn't raise me to see color. Luckily, Charlotte and I have families that are very welcoming of everybody. The biggest challenges came more from our different upbringings.</p><div type="image" title="Cedric Thompson and his daughter." height="1340" width="1784" msid="103670740" hostid="261" sizebytes="89908"></div><h2>Naming our children</h2><p>When my wife became pregnant with our second child in 2019 and we began looking at names, we <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T07glJKdmK4" target="_blank" rel="noopener">took DNA tests</a> to learn more about our ancestral ethnicities because we wanted the name to have significance from our cultural backgrounds.</p><p>I discovered I have all these bloodlines — Nigerian, Malian, even 4% Irish — but they felt distant, especially since I'd grown up in Los Angeles and identify as African American.</p><p>Another thing I struggled with was the idea that my last name isn't even mine, <a href="https://www.nbcnews.com/news/nbcblk/many-african-american-last-names-hold-weight-black-history-rcna17267" target="_blank" rel="noopener">given the history of slavery</a>. It was the same with Charlotte, since many Filipino names are Spanish from <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/facts-about-the-philippines-that-you-may-not-have-known-2018-1">the Philippines' Spanish colonial period</a>.</p><p>But we knew we wanted to honor our families' lineage. I've always been inspired by Samoan and Native Indian names, because they derive something from their tribes. So we wanted to do the same thing and named our children after our family members.</p><div type="image" title="Charlotte Thompson and her children" height="1370" width="1824" msid="103670741" hostid="261" sizebytes="139464"></div><p>Our oldest daughter is named Madeline, after Charlotte's sister who passed away from cancer. Madeline's middle name, Parker, comes from my grandmother. We named our second daughter Lucca because we loved its meaning — "brings the light" — and her middle name, Ryan, is my wife's oldest sister's name. And then with our youngest daughter, we named her Quincy because she's the fifth person in our family — hence the "quint" — and it's similar to Charlotte's grandfather's name, Alcuin. Her middle name is Marie, which is my mother's middle name.</p><p>For us, the names were about tying our family lineages together, as they're the people who took care of us and loved us, and they're where we grasped meaning from.</p>

<ul class="summary-list"><li>A newborn rescued from the ruins of a major earthquake in Syria has been moved to a safe location.</li><li>The move is a precaution against possible kidnapping attempts, a source told BBC News.</li></ul><p>An orphaned Syrian baby who was saved by rescuers following last week's <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/rescuers-pull-out-survivors-week-after-earthquake-turkey-and-syria-2023-2">deadly earthquake in Syria and Turkey</a> has been moved to a "safe location" by health authorities as a precaution against possible kidnapping attempts, <a href="https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-middle-east-64649648" target="_blank" rel="noopener">BBC News reported.</a></p><p>The baby, who has been named Aya, is the only survivor of her immediate family. Her <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/world/2023/feb/10/baby-aya-syria-earthquake-newborn-name" target="_blank" rel="noopener nofollow">parents and four siblings</a> died in the <a href="https://www.insider.com/turkey-earthquake-strong-power-new-york-city-4-days-seismologist-2023-2?_gl=1*cypp7i*_ga*NDI0NzI2ODk2LjE2NjQ0MjYwMDA.*_ga_E21CV80ZCZ*MTY3NjAwNDMwOS4yMjguMS4xNjc2MDA5MTgyLjAuMC4w" rel="">7.8 magnitude earthquake</a> which has, so far, resulted in more than 40,000 deaths.</p><p>Her mother died soon after giving birth to Aya, who was still connected by her umbilical cord when rescuers found her in the ruins of a devastated building, Agence France-Presse reported.</p><p><a href="https://www.insider.com/video-baby-saved-mom-gave-birth-but-died-in-earthquake-2023-2">After a video showing a rescuer pulling Aya from the rubble </a><a href="https://www.insider.com/video-baby-saved-mom-gave-birth-but-died-in-earthquake-2023-2">went viral</a><a href="https://www.insider.com/video-baby-saved-mom-gave-birth-but-died-in-earthquake-2023-2">,</a> there was an outpouring of support for the baby, with thousands of <a href="https://www.insider.com/turkey-syria-earthquake-adopt-baby-born-in-rubble-2023-2">people from around the world offering to adopt her.</a></p><p>But Aya has now had to be moved to a safer location to protect her from possible kidnapping or adoption fraud, a source told BBC News.</p><p>The Indian newspaper <a href="https://www.firstpost.com/world/miracle-baby-aya-put-under-police-protection-after-strangers-claiming-to-be-her-relative-crowd-hospital-12157502.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Firstpost reported</a> that Aya was put under police protection after several strangers turned up at the hospital claiming to be related to her.</p><p>Meanwhile, on Monday a violent incident took place at the hospital in Afrin, Syria, when a male nurse and two armed men allegedly attacked the hospital manager, BBC News reported.</p><p>According to social media posts reviewed by BBC News, the head of Afrin's health directorate said that claims that the incident was related to a kidnapping attempt were a "misunderstanding."</p><p>Aya is currently being cared for by the hospital manager, Khalid Attiah, and his wife, who are looking after the orphaned baby alongside their own four-month-old daughter, according to reports.</p><p>The couple said they would look after the baby until a distant relative is able to take her in, per the <a href="https://apnews.com/article/earthquake-syria-orphans-9252308af8ceea28023782d506d73081" target="_blank" rel="noopener nofollow">Associated Press.</a></p><p><a href="https://www.google.com/search?q=Salah+al-Badran+aya&amp;rlz=1C5CHFA_enGB930GB930&amp;oq=Salah+al-Badran+aya&amp;aqs=chrome..69i57j0i546l3.1959j0j7&amp;sourceid=chrome&amp;ie=UTF-8">The Guardian reported</a> that Aya's great-uncle intends to adopt her once she is released from the hospital.</p>

Orphaned baby Aya born in the earthquake rubble in Syria has been moved amid kidnap fears

<ul class="summary-list"><li>"The Beanie Bubble," streaming now on AppleTV+, tells the story of the rise and fall of Beanie Babies.</li><li>Geraldine Viswanathan plays a fictionalized version of Lina Trivedi.</li></ul><p>In "<a href="https://www.insider.com/the-beanie-bubble-movie-fact-check-2023-7">The Beanie Bubble</a>," now streaming on AppleTV+, Maya (Geraldine Viswanathan) reads a poem for Stripes, a tiger Beanie Baby. While it's not the real verse, Stripes' poem was the first of dozens of Beanie Baby poems written by the real Maya: Lina Trivedi. </p><p>Trivedi, Ty Inc.'s 12th employee, came up with the idea to include birth dates and rhymes in every Beanie Baby hangtag.</p><p>"I was looking at the tag and how it said 'To:' and 'From:' I was just thinking nobody uses that. Nobody actually gives a Beanie Baby to someone and writes their name on it," Trivedi, now 50, told Insider via phone. "How do we use that space to build some type of connection with people and tie it into content that we can have on our webpage that people will want to come look at and get excited about?"</p><p>After a pitch to CEO Ty Warner, she made a mock-up in Photoshop, writing Stripes' poem "within a couple minutes." Warner tasked her with writing more than 80 Beanie Baby poems in 24 hours. </p><p>Based on <a href="https://affiliate.insider.com?amazonTrackingID=biauto-60295-20&amp;h=6d8a46e20ebdb8a077ed098c2187945b6bde936685acb702f90c9db486c75d9c&amp;postID=64c7fbfcfa4d08025227ae58&amp;site=in&amp;u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2FGreat-Beanie-Baby-Bubble-Delusion-ebook%2Fdp%2FB00INIXVPW%2Fref%3Dtmm_kin_swatch_0%3F_encoding%3DUTF8%26qid%3D%26sr%3D">Zac Bissonnette's 2015 bestselling book</a>, "The Beanie Bubble" follows the story of the rise and fall of Beanie Babies with a focus on three women who were close to Warner and instrumental in the company's success. </p><p>Viswanathan plays a fictionalized version of Trivedi who really <a href="https://www.insider.com/the-beanie-bubble-movie-fact-check-2023-7#trivedi-really-pitched-the-idea-for-the-tycom-website-but-she-wasnt-its-sole-creator-7">built and ran the company's website</a> with her brother and wrote an estimated 137 Beanie Baby poems, most of which were penned in three days, not one.</p><p>"I was always nervous that my role was going to be played by someone that doesn't necessarily reflect who I am," a relieved Trivedi, who identifies as Indian American, said of Viswanathan's casting.</p><p>"I was like, 'It's gonna be a white male college kid playing my role," Trivedi said. "That's gonna be so terrible. I'm gonna feel so slighted. Not just for myself, but for women in technology."</p><h2><strong>While the film gets many things right, others are embellished for the screen</strong></h2><p><strong></strong></p><div type="image" title="Maya in &quot;The Beanie Bubble.&quot;" height="1174" width="2781" msid="102368088" hostid="261"></div><p>Before the pandemic, Trivedi spoke with a production company that indicated they were working on the adaptation to answer questions about Ty.com crashing on New Year's Eve and to later correct any inaccuracies from Bissonnette's book based on her daughter in the event she was mentioned in the film. </p><p>The film still took some liberties.</p><p>Trivedi was hired at Ty Inc. <a href="https://www.insider.com/the-beanie-bubble-movie-fact-check-2023-7#the-real-maya-lina-trivedi-didnt-join-ty-inc-when-she-was-17-but-she-did-have-to-groom-plush-toy-animals-4">at 19, not 17</a>, while studying sociology at DePaul University in Illinois. She <a href="https://www.insider.com/the-beanie-bubble-movie-fact-check-2023-7#unlike-maya-trivedi-didnt-have-a-cubicle-at-ty-inc-11">didn't have an office cubicle</a> and didn't suggest <a href="https://www.insider.com/the-beanie-bubble-movie-fact-check-2023-7#the-movie-suggests-it-was-mayas-idea-to-retire-beanie-babies-creating-a-supply-and-demand-thats-not-exactly-right-9">the idea to retire Beanie Babies</a>. </p><p>She estimated starting at $10 an hour and getting paid $12.50 an hour by the time she left Ty Inc. at the end of 1997. The film claims she made <a href="https://www.insider.com/the-beanie-bubble-movie-fact-check-2023-7#trivedi-was-paid-1250-not-12-by-the-end-of-her-time-at-ty-inc-16">$12 an hour upon her departure</a>.</p><h2>Trivedi didn't really leave Ty Inc. to work for The Pokémon Company</h2><div type="image" title="Pokemon cards, including a Snorlax, are seen spread out in a hand." height="4016" width="6016" msid="102368089" hostid="261"></div><p>Trivedi laughed when she learned the movie's ending suggested she was swooped up by The Pokémon Company, saying her teenage daughter, a fan of the cards and games, would be thrilled by that detail. </p><p>In reality, when Trivedi left Ty Inc., things weren't easy. A website development business she started with her brother didn't pan out. </p><p>Bissonnette's book claims Trivedi went to jail for a string of felonies and potentially forged postal money orders. While Trivedi denies those claims, she acknowledged being in jail, explaining how it helped shape her.</p><p>"In the '90s, I was in jail for random things all the time," Trivedi said, specifically referencing underage drinking and a dispute with an officer. "I was a rebel against authority. If you give me a ticket and I walk away, I'm not going to court. That was my attitude back then."</p><p>"The important thing to focus on is what I got out of it," Trivedi said of working for three years with a non-profit once she was out of jail, originally making the same money she was at Ty, Inc. "I was basically making jobs accessible to communities that didn't have access to jobs."</p><p>Today, Trivedi's a single mom, living in Wisconsin. She wants to continue carving out a space for women in tech as the cofounder of an AI start-up, <a href="https://joii.ai/" target="_blank" rel="noopener nofollow">Joii.AI</a>.</p><p>Currently working with a longtime friend on a program to tackle loneliness and social disconnection, their goal is to create an AI that users would "train to emulate their patterns and how they communicate and how they talk to one another for the purpose of connecting with the people they're closest to."</p><h2><strong>Trivedi hasn't reached out to or heard from Ty Warner since leaving Ty Inc.</strong></h2><p>"I know he's a very private person," Trivedi said of Warner, adding, "I don't even know how I would reach out to him. He's so private. He was always very kind and courteous."</p><p>Recently, Trivedi considered trying to reach out when she saw Ty Inc. released <a href="https://beaniepedia.com/beanies/beanie-babies/bones-ii-the-dog/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">30th-anniversary versions</a> of some older Beanie Babies, the poems still on her mind.</p><p>"I saw the inside of the tags, and I was like, 'They did that all wrong," Trivedi said with a laugh, suggesting they should've written fresh poems that provided updates on the characters.</p><p>Trivedi almost felt compelled to write new poems to send to Ty Inc., but refrained.</p><p>To this day, she keeps two Stripes Beanies, one of which sits in her car. The tiger shares her birthday, and its poem was written as a personal reflection. She had no idea the impact they may have one day.</p><p>"I had a 12-year-old boy that found out that I wrote the poems to Beanie Babies, and he told me thank you for making the world a better place," Trivedi said.</p>

Here is a snapshot that captures the start-up’s operations, vision and viability.<br />

<strong>Who runs Navigene (navigene.in): </strong>Two co-founders – Dr <keyword id="2024250" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Rishi-Dixit">Rishi Dixit</keyword> (MD &amp; CEO) and Dr <keyword id="1888201" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Vrushali-Joshi">Vrushali Joshi</keyword> (CTO) – and the early-stage incubation and <keyword id="6357097" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="venture-capital">venture capital</keyword> firm, <keyword id="720080" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="IncuCapital">IncuCapital</keyword>. As sample collection is generally done by the people themselves or the <keyword id="6355907" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Medical-facilities">medical facilities</keyword>, the Navigene staff simply picks them up from homes/hospitals and courier them to the HO in Mumbai.<br />

<strong>What inspired the venture:</strong> The knowledge that non-traditional, highly accurate and revolutionary ways of medical diagnosis is possible through genetic screening and diagnostic techniques. Navigene was founded to bring these advanced <keyword id="684042" type="TECHNOLOGY" weightage="100" keywordseo="medical-technologies">medical technologies</keyword> to India.<br />
 <br />
<strong>What’s the pitch:</strong> Early and accurate prediction/diagnosis of disorders and ailments in newborns and adults, through <keyword id="2024271" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Preventive-genetic-screening">preventive genetic screening</keyword> – so that every individual has the opportunity to manage his/her health. “Over the years, we have learnt a great deal about how genes function and how they can cause certain problems. Now is the time to use that knowledge in exciting new ways to prevent and treat <keyword id="6377700" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="health-problems">health problems</keyword>,” says Dr Rishi.<br />
 <br />
<strong>How it works: </strong>Navigene currently caters to the B2B segment – <keyword id="796241" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="corporate-hospitals">corporate hospitals</keyword>, high-end nursing homes with birthing facilities, NICUs (<keyword id="1145483" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="neonatal-intensive-care-units">neonatal intensive care units</keyword>) and state-of-the-art <keyword id="2024290" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Paediatric-facilities">paediatric facilities</keyword>. It also works with individual obstetricians/gynaecologists and paediatricians. The start-up typically approaches medical facilities who, in turn, offer/recommend these services to their clients. Once a client registers for the tests, he/she is given the sample collection kit and the rest of the testing procedure follows.<br />
 <br />
As for newborn screening, parents get the kit as soon as they register and after the birth of the baby, either the hospital staff or the parents collect the urine sample of the baby on the 3rd day. It is then sent Navigene’s central lab in Mumbai where the sample is analysed and reports are sent within 4 days. If the report detects any abnormality, the concerned doctor/hospital/parents are immediately informed and further consultation could be arranged with medical experts. Genetic counselling for the parents is also offered in such cases.<br />
 <br />
<strong>Show me the money: </strong>As of now, the start-up has a B2B revenue model in place while the B2C space is essentially serviced through its partners who can reach out to more people. Navigene charges fee per sample testing and its flagship solution, Navigene Baby Screen (NBS), which tests urine sample for 110 disorders, costs Rs 5,000. But to make it more affordable for Tier II cities and smaller medical facilities, customised packages start from Rs 900 for tracking 3-4 basic disorders and can go up to Rs 2,700 for screening 31 commonest disorders that affect infants in the first few months. The company has also tied up with a leading stem cell company for instant access to a large B2C market. “Plus, we want to work with the state governments when they start running the NBS programme at the state-run hospitals, but we will keep the packages small,” says Dr Rishi.<br />
 <br />
The market size is also huge as around 30 million babies are born in India every year. “As of now, we are targeting 40 cities in India where our addressable market (a fraction of the urban population in these cities) is around 30 lakh babies a year. We aim to cover most of them over the next 3 years through our proprietary sales channel,” adds Dr Rishi.<br />
 <br />
<strong>Claim to fame:</strong> A value driver in a critical industry while expansion is its forte. Navigene is a pioneer of sorts, bringing crucial preventive health screening for newborn babies at an affordable price. The start-up is currently doing 500 samples a month and targeting 10,000 samples in the next 3 years.<br />
 <br /> Navigene raised an undisclosed seed round with the help of its institutional co-promoter IncuCapital in August 2012 and it will be raising Series A <keyword id="6357455" type="EVENT" weightage="100" keywordseo="Funding">funding</keyword> in the next 2-3 months. The money will be utilised to grow its presence pan-India and also in other geographies such as South-east Asia and <keyword id="48890" type="COUNTRY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Latin-America">Latin America</keyword>. “We can’t disclose the names just now, but these would be all bigger and more developed countries. We are also talking to a few players in Latin America, which can lead to substantial global expansion,” says Surojit Nandy of IncuCapital. As for pan-India expansion, the company plans to reach 40 cities in next the 3 years through its own B2B sales force.<br />
 <br /> The start-up has hit <keyword id="2024302" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Operational-breakeven">operational breakeven</keyword> in December 2013, within 11 months from starting its sales operations. But it is not really looking at that as a landmark. “We don’t intend to remain operationally cash-positive as we are growing at a breakneck speed and want to keep investing in the growth. That’s the reason we are looking at the Series A funding soon,” says Dr Rishi.<br />
 <br /> “We are also working on some breakthrough <keyword id="2024304" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Screening-products">screening products</keyword> around <keyword id="350054" type="TECHNOLOGY" weightage="100" keywordseo="metabolomics">metabolomics</keyword> in areas like oral &amp; <keyword id="16070" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="breast-cancer">breast cancer</keyword>, and adult metabolic disorders. So a big chunk of the Series A money will be used for product development. We will <keyword id="47916" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="invest">invest</keyword> a good amount in Capex and Opex to further strengthen our testing portfolio,” he adds.<br />
 <br />
<strong>Biggest challenge:</strong> According to Dr Rishi, there’s no real competition here as very few companies in India focus on genetics (metabolomics). As for the newborn screening business, a few labs who do screening through blood sample testing could be competitors, but they use an entirely different technology platform and can track a maximum of 45 disorders. However, creating awareness among prospective clients is currently the biggest challenge. <keyword id="1912844" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="patient-education">Patient education</keyword> is virtually non-existent in India while the cost of reaching them at a micro level could be huge. “That’s why we are opting for online registrations, which will reduce operational costs,” he notes. “Then there are other screening products we are working on. When they hit the market, we should be way ahead of others,” concludes Dr Rishi.

It all started five years ago, when Nadia was volunteering at the International Indian Film Awards in <keyword id="22442" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Amsterdam">Amsterdam</keyword>. She met him there. He was an Indian businessman and seemed friendly. At the time, he was the perfect gentleman and left no stone unturned to make her feel special and loved- so when he asked her to marry him, she said yes.<br />

What seemed like a happily ever after soon turned into hell, when her husband started turning violent and removing all his anger on her. As we based in India and would fly back frequently, there were times when Nadia had no idea how to get in touch with him for days.<br />
<br /> After three years of putting up with her husband's abuse, Nadia gave birth to a beautiful girl, who she named '<keyword id="1732883" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Insiya">Insiya</keyword>'. In the meantime, she had also filed for divorce, and was receiving threats from him, every other day. She even went into hiding to protect her daughter from any harm, but unfortunately she couldn't do enough.<br />
<br /> On September 29, her ex-husband, <keyword id="3999695" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="shehzad-hemani">Shehzad Hemani</keyword>, violently kidnapped their two-year-old daughter Insiya from Amsterdam and fled to India. Nadia has not spoken to her two-year-old daughter ever since. All she wants is to get her daughter back.<br />

"I met him while I was volunteering at the International Indian Film Academy Awards in Amsterdam. He seemed friendly and through the organization he got my phone number. He texted me and every now and then we kept in touch. I don’t think you can call it a friendship but we were acquaintances. He was a businessman from India and he traveled a lot. In 2010 he was in Amsterdam and he came by my house. To my surprise he asked me to marry him. I barely knew him so I kindly refused. I don’t think he understood my no and so he kept sending me messages and kept traveling to Amsterdam to come and meet me. He made me feel special and he kept putting me on a pedestal. He made me feel special and he was very nice to me. At some point I was in love and he took good care of me. He loved me and it was picture perfect. I started to fall in love with him and when he proposed again I said yes. We got married in 2011 and that’s when everything changed.<br />

The day we got married everything changed. Our wedding was big and many people were invited. I noticed a change in his behavior. He acted differently but I couldn’t really pinpoint what it was. After the party he left and he disappeared for our wedding night. He slowly changed from a loving man into a dominant husband. Before we got married he would tell me I was beautiful and give me compliments but once we were married he told me I dressed terribly and slowly started tarring down my confidence. I love meeting new people but he made sure I didn’t become friends with his friends. He would tell me they were using drugs or that they were cheating on their wives. That way he made sure I didn’t mingle with his friends. Later on I found out that he would tell his friends that I was an abusive wife and that I only married him for his money. He was slowly isolating me and I was getting more dependent of him. During our marriage he was living in India. Our plan was to move to London at some point. In the meantime, we kept traveling back and forth from Mumbai to Amsterdam. Later on that plan shifted and we decided we would live here. He would keep his job in Mumbai but our home would be here.<br />

After 3 years of marriage I got pregnant. It was not an easy pregnancy. When our daughter was born I named her Insiya. When I gave birth to Insiya, he left after four days and he left me alone with the baby. 6 weeks after our daughter was born the traveling back and forth started again but it was almost impossible. Traveling with a newborn is exhausting and by the time she was 6 months old we had traveled to India over 6 times. I was taking care of our daughter. I remember one night Insiya woke up in the middle of the night and we could hear her cry through the baby phone. He got really mad at me and when she woke up for the third time he said I had to go sleep in her room because he could not sleep. He did not have much patience with her. He never fed or changed her diaper. I felt like a single mother in a marriage.<br />

After we got married he also became physically violent. Here I was, a highly educated woman from a Western country with an abusive husband. I never told anyone because I was too ashamed. From the outside we looked like the perfect family but it was a nightmare. 8 months after Insiya was born we both agreed on the fact that the traveling wasn’t working out.<br />

Every time he would be abusive he would tell me the next day that he was sorry and that it was all his fault. He promised me he would change. He would say that I was a better person than he was and that is why I would be able to forgive him. I still wanted to believe in our fairy tale and so I kept giving him chances, but a man who beats you once will beat you again.<br />
<br />
When I stopped traveling to India with our daughter we agreed that he would visit us in Amsterdam every two weeks. I hoped it would improve our situation but it didn’t. He came by often but he had not lost his anger. He was still violent. This time I couldn’t take it anymore and I stood up for myself and said that it was enough. I want to be an example for my daughter. It was the first time I told him enough is enough.<br />

In April we went on a family vacation to Dubai and when we returned he went back to India. I called him the next day but he didn’t pick up his phone. I didn’t hear from him in days and when he did pick up his phone he said he was busy. I asked him what he was busy with he said that he was watching cricket. He couldn’t call us and talk to his daughter because he was watching cricket. I told him that if he wouldn’t make us a priority he would also no longer be a priority to us.<br />

A few days later he had send all my Facebook friends the same message. In the message he asked if he could meet up with them to talk about me. He wasn’t picking up his phone so I texted him and asked him what he was doing. He said that I was a loser because I didn’t dare to file for a divorce and that he would sue me. He had written my brother and said that I was going to pay for this and that he was going to shame my name. He said that he would tell everyone in Amsterdam and the rest of the world what a terrible woman I was. He ended his message with: 'This game has just begun."<br />

From that day he made our lives impossible. I filed for divorce but I always made sure he still got to see our daughter. Even after what he had done I still wanted Insiya to be able to have a relationship with her father. One day he came over and while she was sitting on his lap he said that he would send his friends over to have me killed. I walked up to him and took Insiya and ran to the police station to file a complaint against him. The threats kept coming from his side. He said that he would kidnap our daughter and that he would take her to India. He kept messaging me and my family. The messages were so detailed about my whereabouts that I got the feeling I was being watched. And then I found a GPS track and trace device under my car. I went to the police immediately and we had to go into hiding. We were no longer safe. The police attached an AWARE system to my body in case of emergency.<br />

The following months he couldn’t see us because of the threats; we were legally not allowed to have direct contact. On a Wednesday in January two policemen knocked at our door. They spotted a suspected vehicle and my ex-husband was in it. It was a rented car with a child’s seat in the back. The first thing that went through my mind was, he is going to take Insiya.<br />

It was very clear that he had worked out a plan to kidnap her that day. Again we had to go into hiding until we were sure he had left the country. In the following months we were in heavy lawsuits but meanwhile I kept finding track and trace devices under my car. He kept losing the lawsuits and the judge decided that I became the primary and legal custodian of our daughter. It damaged his ego and as a response he started telling people that I was mistreating our daughter. I was scared all the time. His goal was to destroy me. During the summer it became quiet and I hoped it was over but I was wrong.<br />

It was an early morning on the 29th of September and I left the house early. I was at my mother’s place and while I went out Insiya and my mother were in the kitchen having breakfast. Right before I left the house Insiya said: ''Bye mama, see you soon.''<br />

I was in my car on the highway when my nephew, who was staying at my mother’s house, called. I picked up the phone and he screamed: ''Sister Nadia, Men! Men! They took her, They took Insiya.'' My heart stopped.<br />

Right after I had left the house few men had come to my mother’s house pretending they were working for the municipality and were government officials. My mother didn’t believe them and my sister, who was also present at my mother’s house, didn’t believe them. When one of the strange men saw Insiya, he grabbed her and took her to his car. She was not even dressed and only wearing her diaper and undergarments. My mother and sister tried to stop them but they had already fled with their car. My mother got beaten up and my sister got shot down with a taser. With the help of a neighbor they managed to catch one of the kidnappers.<br />

While all of this happened I was on the high way. I made a U turn and I pressed my AWARE button but I got stuck in traffic and when I got home Insiya was already gone.<br />
<br /> Ever since that day my life has been a complete nightmare. In life sometimes you have a bad day but then you go to sleep and there is a new day waiting for you. For me this bad nightmare isn’t ending. For two weeks after the violent kidnap, I had no idea where Insiya was. Later we found out that he had traveled to Germany with her. From there he went to India. As far as I know she in Mumbai with her father whom she barely knows. He has said that if I will go to India he will have me arrested. He is a wealthy and powerful man and he easily buys people off. He has hired one of the best lawyer of <keyword id="77570" type="COUNTRY" weightage="100" keywordseo="The-Netherlands">The Netherlands</keyword> to defend him. I haven’t talked to my daughter since she has been kidnapped. Despite my countless efforts, he will not let me talk to my 2-year-old daughter. Together with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Dutch government we are trying our utmost best to get Insiya back.<br />

Every day from morning until night I am working on this. I will not stop until I can hold my daughter again."<br />

<br /> The baby girl was born to Kumar Sajal and Smriti Sinha in <keyword id="30033" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Bihar">Bihar</keyword>’s Munger District on February 21 and the <keyword id="74488" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="PAN-card">PAN card</keyword> was allotted to her on February 26.<br />

If her parents are to believed, Aashi has become quite the local celebrity with her father even recommending her name to the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=guinness+book+of+world+records">Guinness Book of World Records</a>.<br />
<br />
Before Aashi, the record was held by Jaipur’s Aryan Chaudhary, who had gotten his PAN Card when he was just seven days old.<br />

Here’s the five-day-old girl from Bihar who became India’s youngest PAN Card holder

The Rail Budget 2016-17 presented in the <keyword id="6355187" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Lok-Sabha">Lok Sabha</keyword> by Minister for Railways Shri <keyword id="6356597" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Suresh-Prabhu">Suresh Prabhu</keyword> can be described as a pragmatic, technocratic and a people-centric budget. Minister Prabhu in his characteristic demeanour and in line with a radical departure from Rail Budgets of the past seemed to focus on four broad themes in his budget.<br />
 <br /> First was the focus on processes. It included an overall theme and ways and means to achieve those challenges being faced by railways. The budget aimed to provide an overarching framework for 'reorganising, restructuring and rejuvenating' <keyword id="6355455" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-Railways">Indian Railways</keyword>. It is expected to be achieved through 'new revenues, new norms and new structures'. 'New revenues' are to be generated not through conventional methods like increasing tariffs but through newer ways of income generation through monetization of assets of the railways. 'Newer norms' mean improvement in procurement processes and reexamining existing expenses to ensure optimal productivity. In 'newer structures' the budget mentioned the need to look at 4c's of solving issues- namely co-operation, collaboration, creativity and communication. In short there seemed to be a massive reorientation of the way in which the railway budgets have been traditionally looked at by the union government.<br />
 <br /> The second broad area of the <keyword id="3226191" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Railway-Budget-2016-17">Railway Budget 2016-17</keyword> seems to be its customer-centric approach. The budget starts with making travel comfortable, introducing better e-ticketing facilities both offline and online with enhanced capacity for ticketing increasing from 2000 tickets per minute to 7200 tickets per minute. Another crucial area has been social initiatives like online booking for Braille enabled coaches and increased quota at the lower berth for senior citizens and women, which are seen to be customer-friendly measures. Other steps for customer centricity include 'Clean my Coach' service through SMS and invitation to FM radio stations for introducing entertainment services in rail coaches. Also, Janani sewa to help provide children's menu on trains, baby foods and hot milk is seen as a customer centric measure. Another positive is the introduction of the term Sahayak for porters with an aim to impart them with soft skills necessary for a better experience for customers.<br />

The third major issue was in context to infrastructure, partnerships and a collaborative approach to infrastructure improvement. There is in place a cabinet approval for JV's with State Governments on infrastructure expansion and growth. 17 state governments have consented and 6 MOU's have been signed with state governments. Apart from this works covering 53,000 km and close to ₹90,000 crores have been proposed in the budget documents. Also, over the long term, the budget seems to focus on building three dedicated freight corridors. Besides it also talks about projects for port connectivity and works in various parts of India like northeast and Jammu and Kashmir that are already underway. The hi speed rail corridor between Ahmedabad and Mumbai is also set to take off with the registration of SPV in the coming month. Also, the initiatives for Wi- Fi enablement in 400 more stations in the coming year is another positive step which shows the resolve of the government for services around core infrastructural development.<br />
 <br /> Fourth, another major area seems to relate to the financial aspect of the budget. The budget appears to be balanced with the revenue shortfall in the revised estimates being neutralised by savings of approximately ₹ 9000 crore. Over the long term, the need is to improve revenues from the non-rail sources which are around 5-6 times in other parts as compared to India. In India, the revenues from non-rail sources are close to 5 percent of total revenues. It needs, to be tapped for revenue growth over the long term. Revenue generation is targeted for 2016-17 at ₹ 1,84,820 Crore which is a considerable rise from the revised year's figure. The <keyword id="46930" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="capex">CAPEX</keyword> for 2016-17 is pegged at ₹ 1.21 lakh which is to be financed through joint ventures and new frameworks for PPP, etc.<br />

The Railway budget has focussed on innovative ways to finance and cut down expenditure. Amidst the constraints, it wants to do best for India with the existing resources at hand. Creation of institutions like the Rail University will go a long way for the future improvement in the functioning of the railways. It is hoped that this pragmatic and technocratic thinking sees quick implementation on the ground.<br />
