New Delhi, Nov 17 () With strong fundamentals, India's civil aviation sector is in its "golden age" and there is also healthy competition among domestic carriers, IndiGo CEO Ronojoy Dutta has said.
 Interestingly, the country's civil aviation sector has been experiencing lower growth in traffic compared to previous years and there has also been softness in fares in October, according to industry experts.
 The traffic grew just 1.18 per cent in September, as per the latest available official data.
 IndiGo, owned by InterGlobe Aviation, is the country's largest airline with a market share of 48.2 per cent in September.
 While acknowledging that there are problems, including high taxes on jet fuel, Dutta said there are huge opportunities going forward.
 "We are in the golden age of Indian aviation and there are huge opportunities going forward... There are always problems, there are always issues and economic cycles. (But) The fundamentals are strong," he told in an interview.
 According to him, tax on aviation turbine fuel (ATF) is 30 per cent higher than rest of the world.
 Bringing ATF under the Goods and Services Tax (GST) has been a long pending demand of the airline industry.
 "Then there are throughput charges for which we should be getting credit for taxes paid," he added.
 IndiGo has been aggressively expanding its operations and has started 11 overseas routes in the last one year. Recently, it placed an order for 300 more planes from Airbus and is also considering wide-body aircraft for long haul routes.
 On whether there is healthy competition among local carriers, Dutta replied in the affirmative.
 "We have a commonality of interests. Airlines around the world have commonality (of interests). It extends to ATF taxes, infrastructure issues. In terms of who gets which rights and who flies where, it is all fierce competition," he noted.
 He also made it clear that there are no plans for a loyalty programme for passengers.
 "We have studied it. We have rejected that option... It is too expensive. We are a low cost carrier and we have to keep our costs low," Dutta said.
 When asked whether passenger volumes could balance the costs arising out of a loyalty programme, the IndiGo chief replied in the negative.
 "We have the volumes already. The question is will the incremental volumes pay for it. Given the cost, the incremental volumes do not pay it," he noted.

'Golden age' for Indian aviation sector; fundamentals strong: IndiGo chief

While India’s airlines have expanded their business rapidly over the past decade, as indicated by surging passenger traffic, much of this has come with high capital costs and minimal profits. And now? Airlines are recovering from one of the worst years so far in recent memory. The rupee’s depreciation is expected to raise costs for airlines, most of which are denominated in dollars like leasing expenses and ground handling charges overseas, by a third. Fuel costs, which comprise 40% of overall costs, have risen dramatically amid a rebound in oil markets and heavy domestic duties. Fares have stayed low in the face of a intense competition in order to keep passenger volumes robust. The losses are mounting. For the first quarter of the current financial year, <keyword id="6358200" type="DOMAIN" weightage="20" keywordseo="jet-airways">Jet Airways</keyword> and <keyword id="6358032" type="DOMAIN" weightage="20" keywordseo="SpiceJet">Spicejet</keyword> and reported net losses of ₹13.2 billion and ₹380 million, respectively, while <keyword id="6354706" type="DEFINITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="IndiGo">Indigo</keyword>, which has usually been the country’s most profitable airline, saw a 97% drop in its net profit to ₹280 million. A lifeline from the government The government has taken notice of the problems faced by the sector. According to the civil aviation secretary, RN Choubey, the Ministry of Aviation is working on a rescue programme for the country’s struggling carriers. While the details of the package have not been announced, the aviation ministry has been working with the finance ministry to ease some of the cost pressures on airlines. The package will likely focus on two things- high fuel prices and the problem of the rising rupee, especially in relation to leasing costs. For the former, the aviation ministry plans to bring aviation turbine fuel (ATF) under the GST regime as opposed to the current system, whereby states impose different taxes on top of a national excise duty of 14%. No discussion of the industry’s problems is complete without mentioning the travails of Air India. The loss-making, indebted state carrier is also slated to receive a minor reprieve from the government in order to stay afloat in the short-term. The Indian government has extended a credit facility <a href="https://www.businesstoday.in/sectors/aviation/govt-to-infuse-rs-2100-crore-into-air-india/story/281976.html">of ₹21 billion</a> to Air India for working capital purposes, following an equity infusion of ₹8.6 billion. The government is also planning to invest heavily in airports infrastructure. Earlier this week, the Minister of Aviation, <keyword id="6356597" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="suresh-prabhu">Suresh Prabhu</keyword>, announced that the government would finance the construction of 100 airports in the country over the next decade and a half, to add to India’s 130 existing airports. The programme is expected to cost around $60 billion.

New Delhi, Mar 25 () Indian aviation sector is projected to incur a staggering USD 3.3-3.6 billion loss in the first quarter of the next financial year if flight services remain grounded till June-end, according to a report.Aviation consultancy CAPA India on Wednesday also said there is a need for a coordinated national aviation industry response to the current situation.India has suspended operation of commercial flights till April 15 as part of larger efforts to prevent spreading of coronavirus infections.In a report, CAPA India said airlines are expected to post a loss of around USD 1.75 billion while that of airports and concessionaries could be USD 1.50-1.75 billion. Ground handlers are estimated to post a loss of USD 80-90 million.Together, the loss for the sector is anticipated to be USD 3.3-3.6 billion in the first quarter of the next financial year. At current exchange rates, the amount translates to around Rs 25,000 to 27,000 crore.The projections are based on the assumption that all domestic and international operations remain grounded until June 30, 2020, CAPA India said.The first quarter of next fiscal -- 2020-21 -- is from April to June."The extension of the domestic lockdown until at least 15-Apr-2020 is the right decision by the Government of India."However, it has ensured that aviation will be seriously impacted by COVID-19. The April-June quarter, traditionally one of the stronger quarters of the year for Indian airlines, is increasingly looking like it will be a washout," the report said.Further, it said that most Indian airlines have not structured their business models to be able to withstand even regular shocks, such as elevated fuel prices or economic downturns, let alone once-in-a-century events. Indian aviation sector may incur $3.3-3.6 bn loss in Jun quarter: CAPA India

By Quaid Najmi The tottering <keyword id="528556" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-aviation-sector" source="Orion">Indian aviation sector</keyword> hit fresh turbulence when early this month, another flourishing private airline was suddenly grounded owing to various problems, making it the 11th in a decade to �fall from the skies. Throwing their hands up, the <keyword id="11252024" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="go-first" source="Orion">Go First</keyword> budget airline's owners -- the Wadia Group -- filed voluntary insolvency resolution proceedings before the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) sending shockwaves through the entire <keyword id="34990" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="airline-industry" source="Orion">airline industry</keyword>. Go First was plagued by a peculiar problem -- the purported failure of the jet engine manufacturer, Pratt &amp; Whitney, USA, to supply engines/spares for its aircraft that grounded nearly 40 percent of the fleet for several months before it was compelled to totally suspend operations from the first week of May 2023. While the <keyword id="6354787" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="DGCA" source="Orion">DGCA</keyword> slapped a show-cause notice on the carrier for its abrupt actions that created havoc with thousands of flyers, Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia seemed sympathetic to Go First grappling with the engine problems. While assuring that the government was helping out as best as possible, Scindia also called upon Go First to make alternative travel arrangements for its flyers to avoid inconveniencing them. According to Go First the application under the IBC came after the "ever-increasing number of failing engines supplied by PW" which led to the grounding of around 25 of its 61-strong Airbus A-320neo aircraft, or almost 40 percent of its fleet by April 30, 2023. Go First said in a statement that the groundings due to faulty PW engines increased from 7 percent of its fleet in December 2019 to 31 percent in December 2020 and 50 percent in December 2022, and blamed PW for giving assurances but failing to meet them. In view of this, the beleagured carrier suffered a whopping loss of nearly Rs 10,800 crore and even demanded Rs 8000 crore as compensation from the PW which could help Go First to meet its financial commitments/obligations. Besides, Go First had also coughed up Rs 5,657 crore to its lessors in the past couple of years comprising Rs 1,600 crore as lease rent for the non-operational grounded aircraft. Go First was also hampered by the PW reportedly not honouring the March 2023 award of the Emergency Arbitrator in Singapore to immediately provide the airline with at least 10 serviceable spare leased engines by April 2023 and 10 more per month till December 2023 to enable the carrier to resume full operations, financial rehab and survival. An aviation official said that after the NCLT processes the Go First application, it could appoint an interim Resolution Professional to take over and re-start operations, adding that a similar exercise in 2019 with another grounded private carrier failed to take-off. Though Go First's promoters have pumped in around Rs 3,200 crore in the past three years, coming to a total investment of nearly Rs 6,500 crore, plus support from the government's emergency credit line guarantee, all this failed to help as the airline kept incurring 100 percent of its operational costs and with a total loss of Rs 10,800 crores, it �succumbed'. In the NCLT plea, the 17-year-old airline which operated over 32 flights to 29 domestic and 10 international destinations, has sought several interim directions including restraining the lessors from taking back their aircraft, any adverse action by the DGCA, suppliers of essential goods-services, etc. Since launching low key operations in November 2005 as �GoAir', Go First gradually climbed up to become the fifth largest private carrier, consistently profitable and expanding till the PW �engine troubles' started from December 2020, hitting its operations and forcing it to ground in May 2023. However, the owner-promoters have already made it clear that they are keen to revive and not sell the venture or even exit this sector, which has witnessed many ups and downs with the practical �demise' of another 10 airlines in the past 10 years - or average one per annum! The Go First imbroglio came at a crucial juncture for the country's aviation sector which was soaring to pre-Covid 19 levels after the harsh pandemic and the ongoing peak summer holidays - and its full impact on the industry remains to be seen. Go First Gone: 11th private airline to 'drop' out of skies in a decade

New Delhi, Ahead of the Budget 2021, the government has hinted at rationalization of various taxes in the <keyword id="45911" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Aviation-sector">aviation sector</keyword>, which is among the hardest hit by the Covid-19 induced economic meltdown. "We are working on a long-term plan to help the sector by rationalizing various taxes. We are looking forward to make the ecosystem smarter and more efficient to make the <keyword id="31907" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Aviation">aviation</keyword> sector sustainable," said Usha Padhee, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Civil Aviation. Addressing a webinar on "Connecting the Dots-Recovery of aviation, tourism and hospitality" on Friday, she underscored the need for the sector to be geared for any challenges and said that policy rejig will also help it in the long run, if it is hit by a similar crisis in the future. The webinar was organised by Women in Aviation International - India Chapter. Highlighting the success of Udan scheme, she further added: "Though the pandemic has adversely impacted the aviation and allied sectors, yet we have managed to take steps towards recovery. We are systematically opening the air space for operations and the air bubbles have helped aviation sector to get 60% capacity of domestic sector back." She added that great solutions are borne out of crisis while delving into the fact how the industry has fast adapted to technology and transformed digitally. "The crisis has led to digital transformation for the aviation sector. Now we have 100% web check-ins and various technology driven solutions have been adopted to offer touchless experience to passengers," she quipped. Pre-Covid forecasts indicated that in 2036 aviation industry will provide 98 million jobs and generate $5.7 trillion in GDP. Post Covid, the situation has reversed completely throwing the industry in a state of flux. All commercial activities are now dependent on the recovery of aviation, tourism and hospitality industry. Various Taxes may rationalize in Aviation Sector in Budget 2021

The Indian <keyword id="31907" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Aviation">aviation</keyword> sector has been buzzing with activity over the last few months. First, the AirAsia debut (in partnership with Tata Group) and announcements stirred the low-cost airlines. Next, the Tata and the Singapore Airlines (SIA) tied up to launch a full-service airline called Vistaar. Jet, which runs the full-service airline Jet Airways as well as the low-cost carrier Jet Konnect, has announced to shut down its low carrier and focus only on full-service airline. But the question is: Is full service the way to go in the Indian airline industry? Are Indian consumers ready to pay that extra premium? 
 
Rough skies 
India’s aviation sector has been going through rough skies. The last few years had the biggest names bleeding in the airline space in India. According to the Centre for Asia Pacific Aviation (CAPA) India Aviation Outlook report, the last seven years have been quite challenging for the Indian airline sector with its cumulative total loss (in these seven years) about $10.6 billion. In the FY 2013-2014, the combined loss of the industry stood at approximately $1.7 billion and the situation seems to stay the same with expected combined loss of the industry to be at Rs $1.3-1.4 billion, in FY 2014-2015. 
 
Rougher for <keyword id="2484870" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Full-service-airlines">full-service airlines</keyword> It seems that the turbulent times in the aviation sector have affected the full-service carriers more. <keyword id="6360137" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="kingfisher">Kingfisher</keyword> Airlines’ fall is the first that comes to one’s mind. Jet Airways, too, has been in big trouble with its biggest ever loss net loss in the last few years climbing up to be at Rs 3667.65 crore (FY 2013-2014). The company accrued net loss of Rs 485.5 crore in FY 2012-2013 and Rs 1236.1 crore in FY 2011-2012. Another full-service airline, Air India, posted an annual net loss of Rs 5000 crore in the FY 2013-2014. 
 
And the year was challenging for the low cost airlines SpiceJet too, as it accrued its highest ever annual net loss of Rs 1003 crore this fiscal (FY 2013-2014). This is five times more than its annual net loss of Rs 191 crore in FY 2012-2013. 
 
The only two airlines that have posted profits over the last couple of years are low cost carrier GoAir and Indigo. GoAir has posted approximately Rs 100 crore profit in both financial years. Indigo Airlines posted whopping profits of Rs 787 crore in FY 2012-2013, its current fiscal profits are not available yet experts claim that it had stayed profitable this year too. Clearly, so far, the low cost carriers look to be in a better position over the full service ones. 
 
Not many takers for full-service carriers 
The numbers of various airlines over the last few years indicate that there are not too many takers for full-service carriers, certainly not enough to be profitable. According to the CAPA report, in 2014, so far about 6.1 crore flew domestically. Out of this, only one-third, i.e., 2.2 crore took the full-service carriers Air India and Jet Airways (Kingfisher is grounded for two years). The low-cost carriers flew about 3.9 crore (two-third of the total flyers). 
 
The economic downturn has made not only individual travellers cut costs, but the so-called suave corporate travellers too are cautious about spending. In most cases, companies prefer to book low cost carriers for their executive, barring only the senior most. This has impacted the occupancies of the full service airlines. Unfortunately, the trend is expected to go on meaning challenging times for the full service airlines. 
 
Value for money is what Indian consumers want 
Well, looking at the overall behaviour of Indian consumers across sector, one can easily say that value for money is a key focus for them, especially in the service sector. This means that while a segment of consumers often prefer the cheapest option available, there is a huge segment of consumers which weighs what is it that they are getting out of their money. So they may want a specialized service, better seats, meals, lounge access, etc. and they might be inclined to pay premium for it. But the question is how much premium? And do they really see value out of that premium. 
 
If the Tata-SIA’s Vistaar and the other two full service carrier Jet Airways and Air India can work that equation well along with the right cost structure, they can make space for themselves in this cost driven airline industry.

Is Full Service The Way To Go In Indian Airline Industry?

(Eds: Adding details) New Delhi, Mar 20 () Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Friday said an economic package for the coronavirus-hit sectors will be announced "as soon as possible". The minister, however, did not give any timeline by when the package will be unveiled. Sitharaman was speaking to reporters after meeting ministers and officials of civil aviation, animal husbandry, tourism and MSME ministries to take stock of the situation following the Covid-19 outbreak. "I had a meeting with tourism, MSME, civil aviation, animal husbandry sectors. These ministries presented assessment of their sector after consultation with their stakeholders. "We had a detailed discussion in the presence of the Finance Secretary and Economic Affairs Secretary. We are compiling their suggestions," she said after the four-hour meeting here. The ministry will hold an internal meeting on Saturday to firm up the action plan to deal with the crisis, she added. When asked by when the package will be announced, she said "it will be difficult to give timeline but it will be done as soon as possible." The finance minister also said the task force announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi is yet to be constituted. On Thursday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his address to the nation had said the government is setting up a 'Covid-19 Economic Response Task Force' to decide on relief package for sectors hit by the coronavirus outbreak. "Task force is not yet constituted but keeping in mind the sense of urgency, the ministry was holding this meeting. Of course when the task force is constituted it will also get the benefit of these meetings. Other ministries are also sending us their suggestions," she said. Asked about relief measures for the financial sector, Sitharaman said, "SEBI has come up with a list of regulations which will also sort of keep the markets a bit stable. But I can't say what I am doing for the markets. At the moment, we are at a critical stage of collecting everybody's inputs and also the ministry is working in detail about all the inputs which have come." Speaking after the meeting, Tourism Minister Prahlad Singh Patel said the ministry has been assessing the situation. "We all know that the tourism sector has been impacted. The finance minister is already concerned about the impact of coronavirus on all the sectors. We will properly assess the losses to the sector and then decide if any package has to be granted for the industry," he said. Minister of Animal Husbandry, Fisheries and Dairying Giriraj Singh said, "Livestock industry has been hit badly because of the coronavirus outbreak. We discussed various kinds of measures, including loan restructuring, that can help people engaged in this sector." The Indian poultry industry alone is worth Rs 1.5 lakh crore. More than 10 lakh small farmers are directly engaged in the poultry industry, while crores of people are indirectly dependent on the sector, he said. Civil Aviation Minister Hardeep Singh Puri said the Central government is "addressing all these problems" constructively. Covid-19: Economic package to be announced as soon as possible, says FM

<ul><li>The Indian government has reduced the <keyword id="6356916" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="excise-duty">excise duty</keyword> on <keyword id="31907" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Aviation">aviation</keyword> turbine fuel from 14% to 11%, effective 11 October. </li><li>The move is meant as a boost for the aviation sector, which has been struggling with high fuel prices and an inability to pass on higher costs to consumers due to heavy competition in the sector. </li><li>However, the cut will be offset by the recent imposition of a basic customs duty of 5% on <keyword id="59783" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Jet-fuel">jet fuel</keyword> as part of the government’s attempts to reduce its trade deficit. </li></ul>India’s aviation sector hasn’t had an easy go of it this year. The losses have been mounting as fuel prices have shot up and the rupee has plummeted. This hasn’t been counterbalanced by an equivalent rise in airfare owing to heavy competition in the industry. In fact, according to CAPA, a consultancy, domestic <keyword id="44023" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="airlines">airlines</keyword> are set to lose nearly $2 billion in 2018-19 owing to rising fuel costs. In response to the sector’s woes, India’s aviation ministry was said to be mulling <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/the-indian-government-is-planning-a-rescue-package-for-the-aviation-sector-as-the-losses-pile-up/articleshow/65681289.cms">a rescue programme</a> for the nation’s struggling airlines by reducing the burden of aviation turbine fuel expenses as well as rupee pressures. It seems that the first part of that package is kicking in. Yesterday, a week after aviation turbine fuel prices reached <a href="http://www.uniindia.com/air-travel-to-get-costlier-as-aviation-fuel-price-rises/business-economy/news/1367075.html">their highest level since January 2014</a>, the revenue department of the Ministry of Finance said in a notification that the excise duty on aviation turbine fuel would be cut from 14% to 11%, effective 11 October. Aviation turbine fuel had been charged an excise duty <a href="https://www.livemint.com/Politics/TPhLGiz3cRxOmABTYZyuqM/Air-India-plans-hedging-fuel-costs-up-to-25.html">of 8%</a> as recently as a few years ago However, the government decided to hike the duty to 14% in 2016 as its tax revenues were declining amid a freefall in global oil prices. While it is envisioned as a boost for the sector, the recent excise duty cut can also be seen as a ploy by the current government to curry favour ahead of important state elections in Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh by keeping airfare at manageable levels. However, the cut might not be as effective as intended. It will be offset by the recent imposition of a basic customs duty of 5% on aviation turbine fuel. At the end of September, the Indian government hiked import duties on 19 products in a bid to reduce its growing trade deficit. So in essence,unless state governments reduce the VAT on jet fuel, the duties will just cancel each other out, resulting in a zero-sum game.

New Delhi, Jan 31 () Indian aviation sector "re-established" its resilience this fiscal despite a large airline suspending operations and the government has been providing a congenial environment so that airlines can have more than 1,200 planes by 2023-24, according to the Economic Survey.
 India is the world's third largest domestic market for civil aviation and has 136 Airports Authority of India (AAI)-managed airports as well as six aerodromes under public private partnerships, it said.
In recent times, domestic traffic growth had faced headwinds.
The Survey for 2019-20, tabled in Parliament on Friday, also said airlines operators in the country have scaled up their aircraft seat capacity from an estimated 0.07 annual seats per capita in 2013 to 0.12 in 2018.
 "Indian aviation re-established its resilience in the year 2019-20. Despite a large airline suspending operations on April 17, 2019, the sector swiftly sprung back to fill the void created in passenger and air cargo capacity," it said.
 After flying for more than 25 years, full-service carrier Jet Airways shuttered operations in April last year as it ran out of funds. The closure had a significant impact in the sector, including lower capacity to meet higher passenger demand.
 To ease the strain on existing airport capacities, 100 more are to be made operational by FY 2023-24. Besides using 46 idle airstrips, 16 private greenfield airports, 15 AAI airports, 31 heliports, and 12 waterdromes would also be developed, as per the Survey.
 As many as five new airports, including at Kannur in Kerala and Shirdi in Maharashtra, were operationalised this fiscal.
 "To continue with the high growth trajectory, the government has been providing a congenial environment so that the Indian carriers double their fleet from about 680 aircraft at the close of November 2019 to over 1,200 by FY 2023-24," the Survey said.
 The fleet refers to those of scheduled airlines.
 According to the Survey, high growth would continue by way of easing leasing and financing from Indian shores, efficient use of air traffic rights, encouraging domestic and international passenger and goods transfers, and rationalising the tax regime.
 "Capacity utilisation is also being augmented by way of automation at airports. Overall objective is to meet the growing demand and set global best practices and performance quality standards," it added. RAM RAM ANU
