Visiting <keyword id="78682" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-army-chief">Indian Army Chief</keyword> <keyword id="8457212" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="general-Manoj-Mukund-Naravane">General Manoj Mukund Naravane</keyword> on Thursday held a meeting with his Nepali counterpart General Purna Chandra Thapa during which they discussed ways to enhance bilateral defence cooperation. In a solemn ceremony earlier in the day, General Naravane laid a wreath on the 'Veer Smarak' at the Army Pavilion in Tundikhel, Kathmandu, following which he visited the Nepali Army Headquarters and was accorded with a ceremonial Guard of Honour. At the headquarters, he held the meeting with General Thapa, during which the Indian Army chief was also given a comprehensive briefing by senior officers of the Nepali Army. Also on Thursday, Naravane handed over various medical equipment to the Nepal Army, which included X-Ray machines, computed radiography systems, ICU ventilators, video endoscopy units, anesthesia machines, laboratory equipment and ambulances. Additional ventilators were also gifted to assist the Nepali Army in its fight against the coronavirus pandemic. This follows an earlier army-to-army provision of ventilators in July this year. Later in the day, Naravane will receive the honorary rank of general of Nepal Army on Thursday, which will be conferred to him by President Bidhya Devi Bhandari during a function in the President's Office, according to the Nepal Army. Nepal and India have a historic tradition of conferring the honorary title to each other's army chief since 1950. He will be the 18th Indian Army Chief to be conferred with the title. General Naravane is also scheduled to hold talks with the President later. The Indian Army chief landed in Kathmandu on Wednesday for a three-day official visit to Nepal, on the invitation of General Thapa. He was received at the airport by Lieutenant General Prabhu Ram Sharma, CGS Nepali Army and officials of the Indian Embassy. The ties between the two countries came under strain recently after China increased its influence on Nepal. It was India's road construction to the Lipulekh area at 17,000 feet that sparked a diplomatic row between India and Nepal as Kathmandu claimed the area to be its territory. The road was constructed to shorten the travel time for pilgrims visiting the Kailash Mansarovar. Lipulekh is a tri-junction between India, Nepal and China situated atop the Kalapani Valley in Uttarakhand. After this, Nepal brought out a new political map showing the contested area as its own. India has rejected this new map of Nepal saying it is not based on historical facts or evidence. Indian and Nepal discuss enhancing bilateral defence cooperation during Indian Army Chief Naravane's three-day visit

Indian Army chief visits forward locations and reviewed tense situation with China

Army chief Gen MM Naravane will arrive in Nepal on Wednesday on a three-day crucial visit, which Indian officials here say will deepen the long-standing bonds of friendship between the two armies and provide an opportunity for both sides to explore avenues to further strengthen bilateral defence partnership for mutual benefit. Naravane's visit is largely aimed at resetting relations with the Himalayan nation after the ties came under severe strain following a bitter border row. Gen Naravane is visiting Nepal at the official invitation of Nepal Army chief Gen Purnachandra Thapa. Indian Embassy spokesperson Naveen Kumar said that Gen Naravane's visit "will deepen the long-standing and customary bonds of friendship between the two armies." "His visit will provide an opportunity for both sides to discuss the bilateral defence partnership and explore avenues to further strengthen it for mutual benefit." Gen Naravane will pay homage at the martyrs' memorial at the Army Pavilion on Thursday morning and receive a guard of honour at the Nepal Army headquarters, according to Nepal Army sources. He will hold formal talks with his Nepalese counterpart at the Nepal Army headquarters on Thursday. Mutual interests between the two armies and bilateral relations will mainly feature during the talk, Nepal Army sources said. India's decision to send the Army Chief to Nepal to reset the ties is seen as part of a larger exercise by New Delhi to rejuvenate relations with Myanmar, the Maldives, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Bhutan and Afghanistan in the wake of greater efforts by China to expand its influence in the region. The ties between the two countries came under strain after Defence Minister Rajnath Singh inaugurated an 80-km-long strategically crucial road connecting the Lipulekh pass with Dharchula in Uttarakhand on May 8. Nepal protested the inauguration of the road claiming that it passed through its territory. Days later, Nepal came out with the new map showing Lipulekh, Kalapani and Limpiyadhura as its territories. After Nepal released the map, India reacted sharply, calling it a "unilateral act" and cautioning Kathmandu that such "artificial enlargement" of territorial claims will not be acceptable to it. In June, Nepal's Parliament approved the new political map of the country featuring areas which India maintains belong to it. In its reaction after Nepal's lower house of parliament approved the bill, India termed as untenable the "artificial enlargement" of territorial claims by the neighbouring country. India said Nepal's action violates an understanding reached between the two countries to resolve the boundary issues through talks. Nepal Prime Minister Oli has been asserting that Lipulekh, Kalapani and Limpiyadhura belong to Nepal and vowed to "reclaim" them from India. The Lipulekh pass is a far western point near Kalapani, a disputed border area between Nepal and India. Both India and Nepal claim Kalapani as an integral part of their territory - India as part of Uttarakhand's Pithoragarh district and Nepal as part of Dharchula district.

New Delhi, Women will be inducted as pilots in the Army Aviation Corps from next year, <keyword id="6354416" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-Army">Indian Army</keyword> Chief General Manoj Mukund Naravane said on Tuesday. Till now, women are only part of ground duties in the Army Aviation Corps. Women pilots would be flying helicopters to forward locations and be part of operations at the borders, the Army Chief said, adding that the proposal has been cleared. The <keyword id="15141" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-Air-Force">Indian Air Force</keyword> has 10 women fighter pilots. In the <keyword id="6355100" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-Navy">Indian Navy</keyword>, women pilots are flying the Dornier aircraft and also as observers on board helicopters and P8I surveillance aircraft. Other than the 10 fighter pilots, the <keyword id="6355075" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="IAF">IAF</keyword> has 111 women pilots who fly transport planes and choppers. During his annual press conference in New Delhi, General Naravane said: "Last month, I had initiated a proposal that women officers can be recruited to Army Aviation. The next course which will begin in July this year, will induct women for training purposes in flying branch and after one year they will be able to join in operational duties." The Indian Army raised the Army Aviation Corps on November 1, 1986 and it comprises helicopters that fly in conflict and peace zones. The Aviation Corps is critical for the Indian Army as it is pressed into action for evacuation of injured troops during operations or health emergencies in high altitude areas. Army Aviation Corps choppers are also used for reconnaissance, observation, casualty evacuation, essential load drops, and combat search and rescue. The helicopters participate in <keyword id="398565" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="humanitarian-aid">Humanitarian Aid</keyword> and Disaster Relief (HADR) operations across the country. The corps has played an important role in the past in operations like Kargil but has also been at the forefront carrying out varied tasks during the ongoing India-China military standoff in Ladakh.

The approval to take these armed drones could be finalised during Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) meeting lead by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh. To further cement the deal, US Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin is expected to visit India later this month. India is becoming a strategic defence partner for the US, especially countering Chinese influence in the <keyword id="12350" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-Ocean">Indian Ocean</keyword>. These MQ-9B Predator drones are manufactured by San Diego-based <keyword id="834093" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="General-Atomics">General Atomics</keyword>. The MQ-9B has an endurance of 48 hours and a range of over 6,000 nautical miles. It carries maximum payload of 2-tonne. India plans to buy 30 MQ-9 Reaper drones for $3 billion from US company General Atomics

Twenty Indian Army men, including officers, were killed in an unprecedented violent clash with Chinese People's <keyword id="9413941" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="liberation-army-troops">Liberation Army troops</keyword> at <keyword id="9241086" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Galwan-Valley">Galwan Valley</keyword> in Eastern Ladakh on Monday night, the Indian Army said on Tuesday. Sources said that the death toll is likely to go up as many soldiers have been brutally injured. Indian Army issued a statement on Tuesday night wherein it said, "17 Indian troops who were critically injured in the line of duty at the standoff location and exposed to sub-zero temperatures in the high altitude terrain have succumbed to their injuries, taking the total that were killed in action to 20." The force further stated that Indian and Chinese troops have disengaged in the Galwan area where they had earlier "clashed on the night of June 15 and June 16, 2020." The force further stated that Indian Army is firmly committed to protect the territorial integrity and sovereignty of the nation. An unprecedented violent clash took place in Galwan Valley at the Line of Actual Control with Chinese People's Liberation Army soldiers attacking a small group of Indian Army men on patrol, resulting in fatalities which included the commanding officer of the Indian Army. The intensity of the fight increased with reinforcements from the both sides and it continued until late night till the time they got exhausted. Many Indian soldiers went missing during the fight. Early on Tuesday morning, both Indian and Chinese top military officials rushed and called for a meeting to defuse the situation. These are the first casualties faced by the Indian Army in clash with the People's Liberation Army since 1975 when an Indian patrol was ambushed by Chinese troops in <keyword id="46408" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Arunachal-Pradesh">Arunachal Pradesh</keyword>. Earlier in the day, Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh briefed Prime Minister Narendra Modi about the prevailing situation in Eastern Ladakh. 20 Indian soldiers killed in Galwan Valley standoff

Army chief general <keyword id="7912696" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="M-M-Naravane">M M Naravane</keyword> on Tuesday said that he was hopeful that the Indian and Chinese militaries will be able to reach an agreement on disengagement and de-escalation of tension in eastern Ladakh. In an address at a seminar, the army chief said senior military commanders of India and China are holding talks to iron out modalities for deescalation of tension in eastern Ladakh. "We are hopeful of reaching an agreement which is mutually acceptable and is really beneficial in keeping with the overarching policy guidelines," he said. The chief of Army staff also said that the situation in eastern Ladakh is quite stable. General Naravane was speaking at a conclave organised by Bharatshakti.in, a portal on defence and military issues. Referring to Indian troops deployed in the high-altitude region, he said they are equipped with appropriate clothing and weapons, and added that there is no shortage whatsoever. India and China are likely to hold another round of military talks to discuss specific proposals for a possible breakthrough in the long-negotiated disengagement process in eastern Ladakh. The eighth round of Corps Commander-level talks on Friday had broadly discussed disengagement of troops from specific friction points and both sides would like to take forward the "constructive" dialogue to the next round with detailed deliberations, sources had said. In a joint statement released earlier on Friday, the <keyword id="6354416" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-Army">Indian Army</keyword> and the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) described the talks as candid, in-depth and constructive. The statement said it was agreed to earnestly implement the important consensus reached by the leaders of the two countries and ensure that the frontline troops exercise restraint and avoid misunderstanding and miscalculation. Nearly 50,000 troops of the Indian Army are currently deployed in a high state of combat readiness in various mountainous locations in eastern Ladakh in sub-zero conditions as multiple rounds of talks between the two sides have not yielded any concrete outcome yet to resolve the standoff. Indian Army chief Naravane is hopeful of de-escalation of tensions between India and China in eastern Ladakh

The primary goal of the army is to work for national security and protect the territorial integrity and sovereignty of the country. It guards the country from threats and external aggressions. Its secondary responsibilities are to support the civil authority during calamities and natural disasters. Here is an overview of the structure of Indian army, its responsibilities, ranks and reporting portfolio. The Indian Army is divided into three segments namely Army, Navy and Air Force. The President of Indian is the Supreme Commander of these three services. The army headquarters is located in Delhi and under the command of the Chief of the Army Staff. He holds the rank of a four star General and is assisted by 8 Lieutenant Generals. The description of these eight lieutenant generals include a vice-chief, two deputy chiefs, a military secretary, the quartermaster general, an adjutant General, the master general of ordnance and the engineer in Chief. Indian Army Commands The Indian Army is divided into six commands for operations and one command for training. The General-Officer-Commander-in-Chief (GOC-i-C) also called as the Army Commander heads each of these commands. Usually the senior-most Lieutenant Generals in the army is conferred with this rank. Corps Every command generally consists of two or more corps. In total there are thirteen corps in the Indian army each of them commanded by a General Officer Commander (GOC), who is also called the Corps Commander. He holds a Lieutenant General rank. Division Every corps is made of three to four divisions. Each of these divisions is headed by GOC (Division Commander) who holds the rank of Major General. Indian army has totally 37 divisions. Brigade Every corps is made of three to four Brigades. In a Brigade, there will be usually 3,000 troops. Every Brigade is commanded by a Brigadier. Battalion Four to five rifle companies constitute a battalion. Ever battalion is commanded by a battalion commander in the rank of a Colonel. A battalion is the main fighting unit of an infantry. The troops that will actually carry out the different operations make up the arms segment. The rest of the army is said to belong to the services segment. The responsibility of the services segment is to provide the logistics and administration support for the army. Fighting arms consist of armor, infantry, and mechanized infantry. The Army chief has assured soldiers and civilians that he would soon arrange bullet-proof jackets for Indian soldiers. 
 "The Army is moving to provide the jackets at the earliest," said <keyword id="2451571" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="General-Dalbir-Singh-Suhag">General Dalbir Singh Suhag</keyword> at his annual press conference which was held last week. ET sources from the Defence Ministry confirmed that this is the first time that the acquisition process has cleared the technical stage, after its beginning in 2009. 
 
The purchase of these jackets has seen aw several hitches in the past years; even after the government issued a fresh proposal in 2012 after changing the qualitative requirements. Now that the technical trials have been cleared, there is nothing major that can stop the procurement process. 
 
"In the field trials stage we just check the user comfort, weight etc and no real technical issues. In case of bullet-proof jackets, this stage is unlikely to create any bottleneck," a senior Army official told ET.

An alumnus of the National Defence Academy, Khadakwasla and the Indian Military Academy, Dehradun, Naravane was commissioned into the 7th battalion The Sikh Light Infantry in 1980. Counter insurgency specialist Well known as a counter insurgency specialist in the Army, Naravane, in his 37 years of service has served in many Command and Staff appointments, in Jammu &amp; Kashmir and Northeast. He was also a part of the Indian Peace Keeping Force (IPFK) in Sri Lanka. Naravane’s shift to the Eastern Army came at a crucial time when insurgents were <a href="https://www.theweek.in/news/india/2018/10/01/naravane-takes-charge-of-eastern-command-as-army-faces-credibility-crisis.html">reportedly</a> regrouping in neighbouring Myanmar. He was given the charge probably because Naravane was the Inspector General of Assam Rifles (North) in Nagaland --- which looks after the Indo-Myanmar border. He had also commanded the eastern brigade of the infantry. Naravane commanding the Eastern Command became more significant because he commanded the Strikes Corps of the Indian Army and was the <keyword id="32733" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-Defence">Indian Defence</keyword> Attache in Myanmar. He was the General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Army <keyword id="695871" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Training-Command">Training Command</keyword> prior to heading the Eastern Command. The General has served as an instructor at the Army War College, Mhow. He was decorated with the Param Vishisht Seva Medal in 2019, Ati Vishisht Seva Medal in 2017, and the Sena Medal and Vishisht Seva Medal in 2015. The General holds a Masters Degree in Defence Studies from Chennai University, an M.Phil in Defence and Management Studies from DAVV, Indore. He is currently pursuing his Ph.D. from Punjabi University, Patiala.

NEW DELHI: The <keyword id="6354977" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="40" keywordseo="Supreme-Court">Supreme Court</keyword> on Thursday agreed to hear a petition against appointment of <keyword id="163250" type="POSITION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Lt-General">Lt General</keyword> <keyword id="6569422" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Dalbir-Singh-Suhag">Dalbir Singh Suhag</keyword> as next <keyword id="6436694" type="POSITION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Army-Chief">Army chief</keyword>. 
 
The petition, filed by Lt General Ravi Dastane, will be heard in July. 
 Dastane said he has already challenged Suhag’s selection as <keyword id="163613" type="POSITION" weightage="40" keywordseo="Army-commander">Army commander</keyword>. 
 
If that selection is set aside, Suhag’s appointment as next Army chief would also be struck down, he said. 
 
Explaining the urgency behind seeking stay on Suhag's appointment, Dastane said he is retiring on August 31 and Suhag’s appointment as Army chief takes effect from August 1.

New Delhi, The latest diplomatic row between India and Canada is not going to impact the ongoing bilateral military engagement and the matter has to be resolved at the political level, Canada's Deputy Army Chief Major General Peter <keyword id="6372795" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="scott" source="Orion">Scott</keyword> said on Tuesday. Scott is leading a Canadian delegation at the <keyword id="1551039" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="indo-pacific" source="Orion">Indo-Pacific</keyword> Army Chiefs' Conference (IPACC) here that is being attended by military delegations from over 30 countries. "To the best of my knowledge at this time, that is not going to have an impact on us. We leave the matter at hand to the political level to try and resolve," he told PTI. "We are happy to be here and we do not see the issue clouding matters at this point at all," Major General Scott said. The ties between India and Canada came under severe strain following Canadian Prime Minister <keyword id="1740494" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="justin-trudeau" source="Orion">Justin Trudeau</keyword>'s allegations of a "potential" involvement of Indian agents in the killing of Khalistani separatist <keyword id="7575364" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="hardeep-singh-nijjar" source="Orion">Hardeep Singh Nijjar</keyword> in June. India has rejected the allegations as "absurd" and "motivated" and expelled a senior Canadian diplomat in a tit-for-tat move to Ottawa's expulsion of an Indian official over the case. "The way we see right now is that we will continue to cooperate, discuss, and enjoy great forums like this where we can exchange ideas and find solutions to the difficulties facing a lot of the Indo-Pacific nations," he said.
