According to an ANI report, this projection comes from a research report by <keyword id="23122458" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="nuvama-wealth-investment-limited" source="keywords">Nuvama Wealth Investment Limited</keyword>, which attributes the growth to increased customer enquiries and a resurgence in rural demand. A key factor driving this surge is the anticipated revival of rural demand, which contributes more than 55% to the two-wheeler market. According to the report, rural areas are showing strong signs of recovery, and the increased enquiries suggest a positive outlook for sales. This bodes well for mass-market original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) such as TVS Motors, <keyword id="19983534" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="hero-motocorp" source="keywords">Hero MotoCorp</keyword>, and <keyword id="19897354" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="bajaj-auto" source="keywords">Bajaj Auto</keyword>. The launch of new models, including the <keyword id="22875740" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="tvs-jupiter" source="keywords">TVS Jupiter</keyword> and Hero Xtreme 125R, is also expected to boost two-wheeler sales. In the passenger vehicle segment, rural demand accounts for over 35% of the market. While growth in this area is expected to be in the single digits, it is anticipated that utility vehicles (UVs) will outpace hatchbacks with double-digit growth. This trend will likely benefit manufacturers such as Mahindra &amp; Mahindra and Tata Motors, with new models like the Mahindra Thar Roxx and Tata Currv expected to attract a significant share of customers. According to the report, dealers have built up stocks for 1.5 to 2.5 months, signalling confidence in the market’s potential for increased sales. This build-up of inventory demonstrates that both manufacturers and dealers are optimistic about the surge in demand during the festive period. While two-wheelers and passenger vehicles are set to lead the charge this festive season, the commercial vehicle (CV) market is expected to grow at a more modest pace. Demand for medium and heavy commercial vehicles (MHCVs) is projected to increase in the low single digits, primarily driven by replacement demand as freight availability improves across India. Similarly, the tractor segment is expected to perform well over the next few years, with volume growth likely in the high single digits from FY24 to FY26. Tractors are seen as a strong performer in the long term, and the sector is poised to benefit from India’s agricultural demand and rural recovery. Looking beyond the festive season, the report suggests that the long-term outlook for the two-wheeler and tractor segments remains robust. Historical sales cycles, which typically span two to four years, suggest that these sectors could reach new peaks in the coming years. As a result, the report forecasts high single-digit volume growth for two-wheelers and tractors through FY24-26, while passenger vehicles and commercial vehicles are expected to see low single-digit growth. The many challengers to the old-style TVs are dark homes, a growing laptop audience and last but not the least – India’s largest sporting property, IPL, going free on digital. From the pandemic-induced highs of 2020, there has been a 16% drop in overall <keyword id="659577" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="tv-viewership" source="Orion">TV viewership</keyword> in 2022, according to a recent FICCI-EY report on media and entertainment. “As digital media creates new ways to engage, and direct-to-consumer relationships are getting built, consumers are more than willing to try new media options and this is increasing cross-media consumption like never before,” the report said. Top-end connected homes The FICCI-EY report defines TV audiences under four different categories — those who watch only connected TV; digital-first homes that watch pay TV as well as have OTT or over-the-top subscriptions; the pay TV homes that also watch content online; the free TV homes and dark TV homes. Almost all these categories are seeing some sort of digital disruption, which is changing the patterns of viewership. At the top end is the smallest group of 2 million digital-only top-end homes with connected TV-only consumption. They do not have any linear TV connections via cable or direct-to-home (DTH), and watch OTTs and consume subscription-based content. In spite of its small size, this section is drawing new forms of advertisers. “Several platforms and manufacturers have started providing advertising services on their smart TV platforms to the extremely desirable ‘top of pyramid’ audience,” EY said. This is followed by 43 million digital-first homes with <keyword id="14701857" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="paytv" source="Orion">payTV</keyword> as well as one or more subscription-video-on-demand (SVOD) services via OTTs. Time spent on linear television fell 7% in 2022 due to a fall in both Hindi and regional language viewership – indicating that a chunk of this segment might upgrade to the top end. As OTT aggregation increases, many TV channels stream live on TV and with the proliferation of 5G, this universe is all set to grow. Broadcaster monopoly is ending There is a large chunk of the audience at the cusp of linear TV and online-only viewing. The report says that there are 77 million pay TV homes which also consume advertising-video-on-demand (AVOD) services – basically YouTube kind of consumption and OTTs that offer free options without subscriptions. In the last few years, the pay TV universe has been shrinking, as more consumers shift from linear TV to bi-directional, which is broadband TV. Pay TV households are expected to decline by two million in 2023, before falling slowly to 116 million households by 2025. Its biggest competitors – smart TV sets – are growing. As many as 8-10 million TVs are being connected to the internet daily. Added to that, digital subscriptions grew 27% in 2022. In 2022, as many as 99 million paid video subscriptions across almost 45 million Indian households generated ₹6,800 crore. This is over 60% of broadcasters’ share of TV subscription revenues. “Smart connected TVs will exceed 40 million (daily active users) by 2025, thereby ending the monopoly of broadcasters on the large screen and leading to around 30% of content consumed on large screens to be social, gaming, digital, etc,” the report said. However, this form of digital subscription viewing also has a new set of competitors. “In addition, increased acceptance of permanent and temporary work-from-home culture has created a large ‘laptop audience’ – possibly a reason why second TV sets are not getting reconnected, and a good case for parity-pricing between linear feeds on TV and on OTT,” the report said. Movie channels lose their sheen, sports to follow The pandemic has changed the way Indians watch movies. Most of them released directly on OTTs that also had fresh, new and even exclusive movies, and film channels that heavily advertise ‘newly released’ movies lost ratings. The report says that movie-loving audiences have shifted from TV to OTT, for the sake of convenience. “As the habit of watching new films at home takes root for upper SEC audiences (which has been helped by the pandemic with direct-to-digital releases and shortening digital release windows), the TVOD film model can gain traction and can be a new window of opportunity,” the report says. TVOD stands for transactional video on demand that allows users to buy content on pay-per-view basis. SEC stands for socioeconomic classification. Another disruption is afoot in the sports viewership modes as we. As of now 44% of Indian sports fans watch live sports only on TV. A sizable 36% are using both traditional and digital media to watch live sports, and 20% watch exclusively on digital. As free digital streaming of high-end sports properties might change the trend as well. “With the announcement of IPL being provided free on digital streaming, we expect this viewership to increase significantly, and this could make it difficult to grow ad revenues on TV as viewership will split across platforms,” the report said. Free and dark TV homes The number of free TV homes – which consume free-to-air channels and no AVOD services – form the lower end of the market and total 45 million. Such homes are bogged down by costs and the lower socio-economic classes classified as NCCS CDE, saw the largest drop of 28% in TV viewership in 2022 from the pandemic-induced highs seen in 2020. “The fall in pay television homes has been attributed to both cord-cutting at the top end as well as movement to free television (DD FreeDish) at the bottom end of the customer pyramid,” the report said. The market also has 150 million dark homes which have no access to TV or OTT. While this segment is most likely to upgrade to free TV, high entry points might keep a few away. They might also move from a feature phone to a smartphone leapfrogging to a smaller but cheaper screen, leaving television behind.

Indian car makers drive the festive boom, two-wheelers showing signs of revival

<ul><li>India’s 2-wheeler exports continue to struggle as demand from its largest market – <keyword id="12925" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="africa" source="Orion">Africa</keyword> – continues to slow down.</li><li>Two-wheeler makers are seeing a sharp rise in demand from new geographies like Brazil, Mexico, Philippines and Turkey.</li><li>While weak demand from Africa will impact volumes of <keyword id="6359783" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="bajaj-auto" source="Orion">Bajaj Auto</keyword> and <keyword id="62356" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="tvs" source="Orion">TVS</keyword>, demand from other geographies hold promise. </li></ul> Export of two-wheelers, which were booming till a few years ago, have now hit the slow lane. In FY23, export of motorcycles declined by nearly 20% to 3.65 million units, while scooters clocked a rise. Africa was a very large market for India’s two-wheeler exports but that market has been slowing down in recent years. In FY20, Nigeria accounted for 25% of India’s overall two-wheeler exports, but in FY23 Nigeria’s share is down to 12%, shows industry data. The bad news is that all other African markets in the first quarter of the current fiscal year are also looking weak. As demand from African markets are expected to remain weak in FY24, it could impact volumes of Bajaj Auto and TVS. Now for the good news, there is demand for motorcycles and scooters made in India across new geographies like Mexico, Philippines, LatAm and Turkey. Going by the run rate of monthly volumes, the share of Philippines in India’s two-wheeler export market could rise to 8% in FY24 from 4% in FY22. African markets are expected to struggle as those economies continue to battle economic and political turmoil. Analysis done by Antique shows the change in India’s top exports markets for two-wheelers and why FY24 could see a turnaround. According to Antique, “In the first 3 months of FY24 the two-wheeler exports continued to remain weak with the overall decline of 31%. However, there are some green-shoots in terms of recovery in the exports of scooters with 40% growth. We however, see the exports recovering in the second half with the African markets recovering from the slowdown and expansion of Indian OEMs in the new geographies.” Auto analysts believe that with new export markets emerging, India’s flagging two-wheeler sales may get a boost. New demand for both scooters and motorcycles is likely to come from countries such as Brazil, Colombia, Mexico, Asia and LATAM demand for personal demand for personal mobility is visible. According to analysts, these geographies are different from African markets in terms of vehicle usage. While African countries use two-wheelers for commercial reasons, buyers in LATAM, Brazil and Philippines use two-wheelers for personal mobility. But to capitalise on rising demand in Brazil, Bajaj Auto is setting up an assembling plant in Brazil to capture the LATAM market and improve product mix. TVS Motors: For this two-wheeler, the largest export market in FY23 was Guinea. TVS exports have grown at a compounded annual growth rate of 11% between FY20–23 as demand from African markets grew. More than 60% of the exports of TVS came via Africa last financial year. Like Bajaj Auto, the company is looking to expand its footprint in LATAM and West Asia. Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India: For this Japanese two-wheeler maker, Colombia is the largest market where it has gained share from Bajaj Auto, says <keyword id="190610" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="antique-stock-broking" source="Orion">Antique Stock Broking</keyword>. LATAM again is a key focus market, even though it has a plant in nearby Bangladesh. Royal Enfield: The four top export markets for this leisure bike maker include: Brazil, US, Italy &amp; UK. These countries account for 51% of its export volumes. Brazil’s volumes grew 80% YoY in FY23, while Italy and US volumes grew 107% &amp; 30% year-on-year. It has 7% market share in the United States in the mid weight category and 9% in the Asia-Pacific, Europe and Middle-East.
