In an effort to make its 150,000 post offices across the country more efficient, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), has been roped in for a major tech upgrade. TCS is the same company that, along with the Ministry of External Affairs, <a href="https://portal2.passportindia.gov.in/AppOnlineProject/pdf/Case_Study-TCS_Indian_Passport_Office_Jan_2014_Ovum.pdf">revamped</a> India’s passport services through the Passport Seva Kendra (PSK) initiative and ‘Student Connect’.

 The postal service’s new system is capable of processing over three million postal transactions per day while providing services to over 40,000 concurrent users with the help of 500,000 employees to help with the ₹1.5 trillion ($22 billion) loss <a href="https://www.businesstoday.in/sectors/psu/india-post-losses-touch-rs-15000-crore-in-fy19-replaces-air-india-bsnl-as-biggest-loss-making-psu/story/337470.html">reported</a> by the Department of Posts (DoP) in FY19. Currently, its main sources of revenue are its popular saving scheme, its payments bank and particularly, its e-commerce portal. However, its traditional services have suffered for the past many years. In the age of technology, postal services seem to have <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/The-Postal-Service-Is-Alarmingly-Close-To-Running-Out-Of-Cash/articleshow/22770438.cms">lost</a> their importance as traditional mail is replaced by text messages and emails. Even the courier service industry has multiple players driving down prices and exclusivity. While India Post has historically relied on its financial services offerings as a big source of revenue, it made a foray in the fin-tech space in 2018, a move that is expected to help it turn <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/industry/banking/finance/banking/government-expects-india-post-payments-bank-to-be-profitable-after-2-years-communications-minister-manoj-sinha/articleshow/65616188.cms?from=mdr">profitable</a>. India Post’s connectivity in rural areas extends to 130,000 access points, which is two and a half times the number of rural bank branches. But, even there, business has been slow due to the lack of warehousing facilities. According to the company, aside from mail operations, the upgrade should also help with finance and accounting, human resource functions and improving connectivity between the post offices. It’s <a href="http://www.newindianexpress.com/business/2019/apr/18/e-com-bet-yet-to-pay-off-for-india-post-1965684.html">estimated</a> that the losses for India Post will only continue to increase are salaries grow but revenues aren’t able to catch up. Hopefully, the ₹11 billion ($160 million) contract that has been in place between TCS and the DoP since 2013, will help India’s postal service find a way out. When <keyword id="866434" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-Post-Office">Indian Post office</keyword> announced that they will soon deploy their own ATMs across the country, it gave their customers hope that they no longer would have to stand in serpentine queues to take out their cash kept in Post Office. CMS Info system has signed a deal with the <keyword id="281610" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="department-of-post">Department of Post</keyword> to personalize over 15 million debit cards for India Post savings account holders. 
 The deal, valued at Rs 30 crores, is estimated to be completed in the next three years. The Department of Post (<keyword id="23226" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="DOP">DOP</keyword>) presently covers a base of approximately 100 million account holders in India, and is in the midst of a phased deployment of ATMs across the country, to better service their customers. To facilitate production of personalized debit cards that can be used at these ATMs, <keyword id="194502" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="CMS-Info-Systems">CMS Info Systems</keyword> has been selected by the DOP to supply Rupay enabled cards. 
 Commenting on the deal, Mokam Singh Matta, Head of Card Business, said “Our latest deal with DOP <keyword id="29478" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Will-Power">will power</keyword> issuance of personalized cards to complement their ATM deployment plans over a three-year period. We expect this to benefit people using <keyword id="200751" type="POSITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="teller">teller</keyword> facilities at the DOP branches, as they can now begin to use these cards for more convenient cash withdrawals. These cards will initially be of the magstripe variant, with the option of EMV being available to the account holders after a set period of time.

New Delhi [India], September 18 (ANI): The five-day special session of Parliament is all set to begin on Monday during which the parliamentary proceedings will shift from the old to the adjacent new state-of-the-art building on September 19. Union Minister of Parliamentary Affairs <keyword id="221548" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="pralhad-joshi" source="Orion">Pralhad Joshi</keyword> on Sunday stated that the Session will provide 5 sittings spread over a period of 5 days, besides informing that eight legislative items are likely to be taken up during this session. "Parliamentary journey of 75 years starting from Samvidhan Sabha - achievements, experiences, memories and learnings" will also be discussed. On Sunday, Vice President <keyword id="7889551" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="jagdeep-dhankhar" source="Orion">Jagdeep Dhankhar</keyword> hoisted the national flag atop "Gaja Dwar" of the new Parliament building. <keyword id="6355187" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="lok-sabha" source="Orion">Lok Sabha</keyword> Speaker Om Birla was also present on the occasion. The Special Session of the Parliament will be held from September 18 to 22. The Advocates (Amendment) Bill, 2023 amends the Advocates Act, 1961, while the Press and Registration of Periodicals Bill, 2023 repeals the Press and Registration of Books Act, 1867. <ul><li>The <keyword id="1400873" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Khadi-Village-Industries-Commission">Khadi Village Industries Commission</keyword> (KVIC) saw a 25% jump in sales to ₹75,000 crore. </li><li>KVIC’s sales are twice that of the largest consumer goods company in India, Hindustan Unilever (HUL). </li><li>The growth in KVIC sales volume can be attributed to the increase in demand for khadi products. </li></ul>The Indian government’s retail division that boasts exclusively of ‘Made in India’ consumer products — Khadi Village Industries Commission (KVIC) — saw a 25% jump in sales in the year ending on 31 March, 2019. In comparison to India’s largest fast moving consumer goods company, Hindustan Unilever (HUL), KVIC’s sales stood at ₹75,000 crore — twice that of HUL’s at ₹38,000 crore. A large part of this explosive growth has come from khadi or handmade products, which grew at their fastest rate ever in the last four years. Khadi in vogue KVIC’s growth in sales is largely due to a rise in demand for khadi products — like papad, honey and cosmetics. Together they accounted for 4.3% of all sales. And, then there’s khadi itself. KVIC is not only selling it in stores but also <a href="https://www.financialexpress.com/industry/spinning-on-khadi-weaves-a-success-story-rs-3200-crore-sales-in-fy19/1527425/">supplying</a> to bigwig fabric companies like Raymond, Arvind Mills and Aditya Birla Fashion. They’re also tying up with state-owned companies — like ONGC, Oil India and even the Indian Post Office — to give out gift coupons to employees, and use khadi for uniforms. Not to mention that khadi is reportedly ‘chic’ fashion in the current era in part due to its comfort. Indian millennials <a href="https://www.indiatoday.in/mail-today/story/khadi-the-fabric-for-india-s-fashionable-and-young-1451881-2019-02-09">look</a> at khadi as an icon of sustainable fashion. Actress Kangana Ranaut is one of the many Indian celebrities who promotes homespun fashion at global film festivals. Make in India and Buy Indian Khadi, a hand spun and hand woven cloth, was one of the weapons of Mahatma Gandhi’s fight for freedom from the British. As a part of the Swadeshi movement, he inspired his countrymen to buy products made by Indians to support the local economy, than allowing Britain to market its own. Today, KVIC is the statutory body responsible for the planning, promotion and organisation of the programmes that aid the use of khadi across. Their growth is also fueled by the current government’s push for local manufacturers with the ‘Make in India’ programme. After taking up various missions like bringing back black money stashed abroad, Swachh Bharat, Digital India and Make in India, the Narendra Modi-led government has embarked on another mission to repeal outdated and archaic laws. 
 
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has asked the Law Ministry to identify these laws and get it repealed through an Act of Parliament. Let’s have a look at six most weird laws in India: 
 
<keyword id="2123426" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-Motor-Vehicles-Act">Indian Motor Vehicles Act</keyword>, 1914: This Act requires that a person needs to have ‘well brushed teeth’ in order to be eligible to become an inspector in Andhra Pradesh. A person with dirty, pale teeth cannot become an inspector in the state! 
 
The <keyword id="75223" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-Penal-Code">Indian Penal Code</keyword>, 1860 (Section 497): Under this law, a married man can ‘legally’ have sex with an unmarried girl, a divorcee or a widow. It will not be treated as adultery. 
 
If you wish to have sex with a married woman, you need to have her husband’s prior approval! The law states, “Whoever has sexual intercourse with a person who is and whom he knows or has reason to believe to be the wife of another man, without the consent or connivance of that man, such sexual intercourse not amounting to the offence of rape, is guilty of the offence of adultery, and shall be punished with imprisonment of either description for a term which may extend to five years, or with fine, or with both.” 
 
On the other hand, women have the special privilege of having as many extra marital affairs as they wish. This is how gender equality exists in our country. 
 
Indian <keyword id="1327581" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Treasure-Trove-Act">Treasure Trove Act</keyword>, 1878: Did you know that you can be jailed if you, by chance, find anything that is worth more than Rs 10 and you do not report it to a revenue officer? The Indian Treasure Trove Act, 1878, states that it is mandatory to report it to a revenue officer. According to the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), the law was designed to “protect and preserve treasure found accidentally but had archaeological and historical value.” 
 
Indian Post Office Act, 1898: This Act states that “the exclusive privilege of conveying letters is reserved to the government.” So, the whole courier industry in the country is illegal according to this Act. Even sending letters through pigeons might in violation of this Act. 
 
Indian <keyword id="1936372" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sarais-Act">Sarais Act</keyword>, 1887: This Act makes it mandatory for an innkeeper to report to the nearest police station if someone falls ill at a hotel. The innkeeper is also required “to thoroughly cleanse the rooms and verandahs, and drains of the sarai (hotel), and the wells, tanks, or other sources from, which water is obtained for the persons or animals using it, to the satisfaction of, and so often as shall be required by, the Magistrate of the District, or such person as he shall appoint in this behalf.” 
 
Moreover, he must “remove all noxious vegetation on or near the sarai (hotel), and all trees and branches of trees capable of affording to thieves means of entering or leaving the sarai.”
