<ul><li>The Indian PC market recorded its second-best quarter with a shipment of 4.49 million devices in Q3 2024.</li><li>The growth in part is due to the online festival sales by e-commerce giants and retailers.</li><li>HP continues to lead the Indian PC market with a share of over 29%.</li></ul> The Indian personal computer or PC market has recorded its second highest-ever shipments at 4.49 million devices in Q3 2024, recording a 0.1% growth year-on-year. According to a report by the International Data Corporation (IDC), the growth in sales was recorded due to online festival sales which began early this year. “The e-tail sales, which typically start around the second week of October, began in late September, leading to a surge in PC shipments,” said Bharath Shenoy, Research Manager, IDC India &amp; South Asia. In Q3 2024, desktops recorded an 8.1% year-on-year decline, notebooks recorded a 2.8% year-on-year growth and workstations recorded a 2.4% year-on-year growth. Premium notebooks priced above $1,000 recorded a 7.6% year-on-year growth. “Brands capitalized on e-tail sales by offering steep discounts, cashback, and bundled accessories. Many of them also matched similar pricing in their brand stores and offline channels like Larger Format Retail stores (LFRs), leading to the second biggest consumer quarter in history,” Shenoy added. Lenovo is second with a market share of 17.3% in Q3 2024, up from 17% in Q3 2023. Dell has maintained its market share at 14.6%. Acer has recorded good growth, with its market share rising from 11.6% in Q3 2023 to 14.6% in Q3 2024. Asus on the other hand reported a decline from 12.5% in Q3 2023 to 9.7% in Q3 2024. “The Commercial PC Market in India is on the recovery path as enterprises have slowly started refreshing their IT devices. India’s PC market reaches new high with 4.49 million shipments in Q3 2024

Indian PC market records 7.1% growth in Q2 2024, HP leads with nearly a third market share

India's PC market grows by 2.6% in Q1 2024, recording third consecutive quarter with growth

Indian PC market down by 6.6% in 2023, HP leads the market while Acer gains

With Indian stock markets touching new highs, people from states like Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan and West Bengal are participating in share markets actively, highlighted a latest report by the National Stock Exchange (NSE). The report highlighted that these three states are now leading in terms of the number of investors actively participating in the stock market, after Maharashtra and Gujarat which are traditional base of investors in the country. Maharashtra continues to lead the country in registered stock market investors, with 1.7 crore investors, making up 16.8 per cent of the total investor base, according to the National Stock Exchange. Uttar Pradesh holds the second spot, surpassing 1 crore investors in April and reaching 1.1 crore by August and holds 11.1 per cent of the total investors. Gujarat has figured at third place with 88.5 lakh investors (8.7 per cent), West Bengal with 59 lakh (5.8 per cent), and Rajasthan with 57.8 lakh (5.7 per cent). The global economy has shown surprising resilience to successive shocks post-pandemic and the International Monetary Fund's latest World Economic Outlook expects global growth to reach 3.1 per cent this year. "And it (Asia) is ahead of the curve on taming inflation. Most countries in Asia are expected to reach central bank targets in 2024," said the IMF official, in his opening remarks at the Thirteenth IMF-Japan High-Level Tax Conference for Asian Countries. But challenges remain. The official asserted that providing extraordinary support in response to the pandemic and Russia's war in Ukraine has left governments with fewer resources amid high debt and rising debt servicing costs. At the same time, demand for public spending is growing, including in Asia--which faces ageing populations and climate change. "And the lowest medium-term global growth prospects in decades mean less tax revenues to pay for it all. In this difficult environment for government budgets, mobilizing domestic revenues is essential to meet growing spending demands and build resilience against future shocks," said the IMF Deputy Managing Director. He noted that emerging markets and developing economies can tap into their tax potential and boost their tax-to-GDP ratios by up to 9 percentage points on average. Meanwhile, <keyword id="19895063" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="India" source="keywords">India</keyword> is set to remain the fastest-growing among major economies in 2024, according to International Monetary Fund's latest World Economic Outlook. IMF, in its latest outlook, raised India's growth projections for 2024 from 6.5 per cent to 6.8 per cent. For 2025, the IMF has kept India's growth rate projection at 6.5 per cent. IMF attributed robustness and strength in domestic demand and a rising working-age population behind its growth projections. Countries with a demographic dividend could help support growth in the global workforce, in which nearly two in every three new entrants over the medium term will come from India and sub-Saharan Africa, IMF noted in its latest World Economic Outlook report. According to India's official data, the country grew at a massive 8.4 per cent during the October-December quarter of the financial year 2023-24 and the country continued to remain the fastest-growing major economy. The Indian economy grew 7.8 per cent and 7.6 per cent during the preceding two quarters - April-June and July-September. India's economy grew 7.2 per cent in 2022-23 and 8.7 per cent in 2021-22, respectively. The report had said that China is expected to grow at 4.6 per cent this year and 4.1 per cent in 2025. Overall, the IMF pegged global growth at 3.2 per cent in 2024 and 2025 respectively. It noted that the global economy remains remarkably resilient, with growth holding steady as inflation returns to target. Despite many gloomy predictions, the world avoided a recession, the banking system proved largely resilient, and major emerging market economies did not suffer sudden stops, the IMF had said. Indian markets trade higher amid mixed cues from global markets

The Indian traditional PC market declined by 11.7 per cent year-over-year (<keyword id="63194" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="yoy" source="Orion">YoY</keyword>) with shipments of 3.9 million units in the September quarter after eight consecutive quarters of growth, a report showed on Thursday. According to new data from the <keyword id="668267" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="international-data-corporation" source="Orion">International Data Corporation</keyword> (IDC), all segments declined except the government, which grew by 91.5 per cent YoY as government orders materialised, leading to strong growth for the third consecutive quarter. "With schools and colleges opening, the consumer segment is seeing tapering demand for the past few months as demand for remote learning has come to a standstill," said Bharath Shenoy, Senior Market Analyst, at IDC <keyword id="3658" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="india" source="Orion">India</keyword>. While the desktop and workstation categories grew by 23.4 per cent and 17.6 per cent YoY, respectively, the notebook category declined by 19.5 per cent YoY. The consumer segment shipped 2.1 million units with online sales helping in picking up momentum at the end of September. "However, that was not sufficient to prevent a 10.9 per cent YoY decline, said the report. HP shipped over 940,000 units and continued to lead the overall PC market with a share of 23.9 per cent. Lenovo overtook <keyword id="28251" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="dell" source="Orion">Dell</keyword> for the second position with a strong showing in the consumer segment where it continued to hold its second position with a share of 18.8 per cent. <keyword id="3346453" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="dell-technologies" source="Orion">Dell Technologies</keyword> slipped to the third position as it lost momentum in the consumer segment. Acer Group continued to hold the fourth position with a share of 10.9 per cent. ASUS maintained the fifth position with a share of 9.9 per cent, much higher than the 8.5 per cent share it had in the third quarter last year. Over 60 per cent of businesses surveyed are "off track" to meet their <keyword id="49089" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="sustainability" source="Orion">sustainability</keyword> goals, according to a report by Bain &amp; Company, which also found that <keyword id="60468" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="consumers" source="Orion">consumers</keyword> are willing to shell out a premium for sustainable products. According to the report, a large number of people surveyed in India say they have a high level of concern about environment sustainability. This could be driven by the spiking levels of <keyword id="13001" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="pollution" source="Orion">pollution</keyword> in major cities and the rising incidence of flash floods in different parts of the country. Consumers in fast-growing markets, where Bain found <keyword id="6422456" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="environmental" source="Orion">environmental</keyword> concerns to be highest, including India, were willing to pay a greater premium (between 15 and 20 per cent), compared to markets like the US and the UK. The report further said that an Indian consumer, however, is still at an early stage of understanding sustainability and a number of related behaviours are influenced by cultural norms and <keyword id="44477" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="financial" source="Orion">financial</keyword> realities. "As extreme weather prompts growing environmental concern across the globe, new research from Bain &amp; Company shows more than 60 per cent of businesses are off track to meet their current sustainability goals," it said. Progress will require a combination of technology, policy, and behaviour change, the report said, adding that an increasingly conscious base of consumers and employees may prove helpful. To get a broad sense of environmental concerns around the world, Bain surveyed 23,000 consumers, and the results underscored the growing urgency of sustainability topics. Almost 64 per cent of people reported high levels of concern about sustainability, and most said their worries have intensified over the past two years and that their concern was first prompted by extreme weather. The report also revealed that a large number of people surveyed in India said they have a high level of concern about environment sustainability. "They are seemingly driven to live or shop sustainably first and foremost by direct benefits around savings and health rather than environmental concern. Consumers express a greater interest in quality, how a product can be reused, its durability, and how it will minimise waste," it said. Karan Singh, Partner and head of the Asia Pacific Sustainability practice at Bain &amp; Company, said while Indian consumers show growing interest in sustainability, there's a noticeable gap between intent and action, mainly due to factors like high prices, limited product information and availability. "This presents a distinct opportunity for businesses to take the lead by educating consumers and innovating to offer sustainable products at attractive prices," Singh said. Consumers' willingness to pay a premium for sustainable products and baby boomers being just as concerned as Gen Z, were the other key takeaways from the report. "As concerns grow, consumers are looking to make environmentally sound choices and are willing to pay more for sustainable products. Yet, they often run into barriers," it said. For instance, consumers in the US are willing to pay an average premium of 11 per cent for products with a minimised environmental impact, even as the average premium for products marketed as sustainable there is 28 per cent. "Consumers in fast-growing markets, where Bain found environmental concerns to be highest - such as India, Indonesia, Brazil, and China - are willing to pay an even greater premium, between 15 and 20 per cent. Consumers in the UK, Italy, Germany, and France, on the other hand, are only willing to pay between 8 and 10 per cent extra," the report said.

Top industry groups and tech giants, including <keyword id="6354427" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="apple" source="Orion">Apple</keyword> and Intel, have sent a letter to the <keyword id="126668" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="us-department-of-commerce" source="Orion">US Department of Commerce</keyword>, protesting against <keyword id="3658" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="india" source="Orion">India</keyword>'s recent import restrictions on PCs, laptops and servers. In the letter, the biggest players in technology and manufacturing said the move "could significantly disrupt trade, hamper efforts to more closely integrate India into global supply chains, and harm businesses and consumers in both countries". Eight American trade groups asked the government to urge India to reconsider the policy, reports Bloomberg News. The industry groups included the Information Technology Industry Council, the National Association of Manufacturers and the <keyword id="1034072" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="semiconductor-industry-association" source="Orion">Semiconductor Industry Association</keyword>. They wrote in the letter that any barrier to trade could affect the shipment of US-made computers and electronics into India. According to the notification by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) in India, for clearance of import consignments with effect from November 1, 2023, a valid licence for restricted imports is required. The government has told tech companies that the restrictions are not to ban imports but to promote exports via domestic manufacturing. Meanwhile, top consumer electronics companies like HP, Apple and Dell last week urged the government to extend the November 1 deadline for the licences required for PCs, laptops and tablets by at least an year, as it will take time to configure and set up manufacturing/assembling units as per new guidelines. In a meeting with the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) officials, also attended by leading industry bodies the Manufacturing Association of IT Hardware (MAIT) and the India Cellular and Electronics Association (ICEA), the tech companies conveyed to the government they need more time to set up manufacturing units in the country, according to sources. Post November 1, no entity will be allowed to import laptops, computers, and related items without a license. The Centre has said the restrictions were imposed for security reasons and also for promoting the 'Atmanirbhar Bharat' mission.
