This Wednesday, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Mumbai">Mumbai</a>'s minimum temperature plummeted to temperatures lower than the hill station Mahableshwar the same day. The <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=weather+bureau">weather bureau</a> said the drop in temperatures was because of stronger daytime winds. 
 
The minimum at Mahableshwar was 14 degrees Celsius. It was 11.6°C at the Santacruz weather station, the second lowest ever recorded in December in over a decade. 
 
The minimum at Santacruz was 6.3°C below normal. The minimum recorded at the Colaba weather station was 17.8°C. That’s 2.4°C below normal. 
 
“The winds are almost northerly, leading to low humidity levels and also bringing in winter chill. Weather models indicate the same chill (to continue) for the next two days," said K S Hosalikar, Deputy Director General (West), <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Indian+Meteorological+Department">Indian Meteorological Department</a>.

Fani is a cyclonic storm building up in the Bay of Bengal that is expected to hit India’s eastern coast in the state of Odisha between Gopalpur and Chandbali. The railways have cancelled 103 trains following the warning of a cyclonic storm. Recently, The Indian Meteorological Department recently issued a warning saying that the Fani has turned into an "extreme severe cyclonic" storm. According to the latest update, Fani is located around 225 kilometres south-southeast of <keyword id="60510" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Visakhapatnam">Visakhapatnam</keyword> and around 430 kilometres south-southwest of Puri, said the India Meteorological Department. Ministry of Home Affairs has ordered to release financial assistance, in advance, of ₹10.8 billion to four states that stand threatened by the natural disaster. Moreover, The East Coast Railway (ECoR) has decided to run a special train from Puri to Shalimar on Thursday for tourists in view of the landfall of cyclonic storm Fani on the Odisha coast. The train is scheduled to leave Puri at 12 noon on Thursday. It will make stoppages at Khurda Road, Bhubaneswar, Cuttack, Jajpur, Keonjhar Road, Bhadrak, Balasore and Kharagpur, said an ECoR official. Odisha was hit for 30 hours by a super cyclone two decades ago that killed 10,000. However, a million people were saved through mass evacuation, said the report. India has a cyclone season that generally starts in April and lasts till December. The season bounds tens of thousands of people to evacuate from their home leaving severe damages to infrastructure. Both India and Bangladesh have witnessed deaths and damages to crop and property.

Indian heat wave hits 50 degrees Celsius — shaping up to be India’s hottest summer ever

It’s a <a href="http://www.imd.gov.in/alerts/20191030_al_1124.pdf">historical first</a> with Cyclone Kyarr is weakening but moving closer to India’s coastline while Cyclone Maha is gaining momentum but expected to shift westward. The Indian Meteorological Department (<a href="http://www.imd.gov.in/alerts/20191030_al_1124.pdf">IMD</a>) has been collecting data on cyclones in India’s oceans for the past 125 years, and they have no record of any such instance happening in the past. <div type="image" title="maha2_edited" msid="71834618" hostid="261"></div>

 The only time that India has been subjected to simultaneous cyclones in the same water body was back in December 1972, according to <a href="https://chennairains.com/cyclone-kyarr-makes-way-maha/">COMK</a> — a website that tracks weather in Chennai. Even then, it was the Bay of Bengal that witnessed one cyclone heading towards the coast of Tamil Nadu while another approached over the South China Sea. Some experts are predicting that the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fujiwhara_effect">Fujiwhara effect</a> might take place, which is when the vortices of two adjacent cyclones start to orbit each other. It’s even possible that the vortices may merge. Fishermen advised to steer clear The Indian Meteorological Department (<a href="http://www.imd.gov.in/alerts/20191030_al_1124.pdf">IMD</a>) predicts heavy rainfall over Lakshadweep, Kerala, coastal Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. It also expects the sea conditions in the Arabian Sea to remain anywhere between rough to high. Cyclone Kyarr, the most severe cyclone that the Arabian Sea has seen in the past 12 years, has nearly come and gone. But Cyclone Maha has put areas on high alert since yesterday. Fishing operations in the Lakshadweep area have been suspended and fishermen have been advised to stay away from east central Arabian Sea till November 4. According to IMD’s alert, thatched houses are in danger of having their rooftops blown off, power lines may get damaged, coastal crops might suffer and there’s a probability that roads might be flooded.

Cyclone Vayu has intensified in the Arabian Sea coast and it is causing heavy rains, winds and thunderstorms, <a href="https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/india/cyclone-vayu-set-to-turn-severe-may-delay-rains/articleshow/69732351.cms">according to media reports</a>. IMD issued an orange alert as it doesn’t expect the cyclone to cause much damage. Yet, it warned fishermen from venturing into the sea till June 13. Though the cyclone caused heavy rains across the Western Coast of India including Mumbai, Pune, Gujarat, Konkan and Goa, it might cause more damage to the already delayed monsoons in the area.  Moving to Gujarat The cyclone is moving close to Gujarat at a speed ranging from 75 km per hour to a maximum of 135 km. It is likely to hit Gujarat on June 12 night, said IMD. "The system currently is seen as a depression over the Southeast and East Central Arabian Sea and is centered at 11.2°N and 71°E, around 800 km South-Southwest of Mumbai," according to skymetweather.com. As per MeT officials, the Cyclone Vayu will head to the Saurashtra by June 12. The western parts of Saurashtra and Kutch region in Gujarat are likely to witness ‘heavy to very heavy rains’ between June 12 and June 14. Jamnagar, Somnath, Porbander, Dwarka and Nailiya in Kutch are likely to be impacted the most, and could even herald pre-monsoons rain across Gujarat. The cyclone might also bring light showers to cities, like Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar, Surat, Rajkot, Veraval and Bhuj on June 12 and June 13.

Google in partnership with the Indian Meteorological Department has launched ‘Weather Alerts’ for extreme climatic conditions. Users will get weather alerts like ‘Severe Rainfall Alert’ or for weather conditions like heat wave, cold wave and thunderstorms. Google will display these alerts on the weather widget on Android phones. These alerts will also appear on top of Google Search results in red. It will also show alerts for less severe weather conditions in Search. Users will also be able to ask Google Assistant for weather reports and get spoken alerts. Another major area that Google is doubling down in India is floods. The company is working with local authorities on developing flood related efforts. Levi said that Google has doubled the alert lead time for floods, and that it has covered 175 of the local affected population. Google has also sent out 110 million notifications which reached 20 million affected people at the start of the monsoon season this year, Levi added. Google has also partnered with the Centre of Pollution Control Board in India to help users get the latest updates on air quality information. By searching for air quality information in Google Search, users will see detailed updates. The search results will show places with their air quality index on Google Maps, and also highlight areas with the worst air quality at present. Google has been working with local authorities for its climate-related efforts in India, and it has seen some results in the past few years. Levi said that over 65% of users in India who received weather alerts took action. In August this year, Google alerted people in Sahebganj which is located in Muzaffarpur, Bihar about incoming floods. Levi said this information helped people safely evacuate the place in due time.
