The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) here is going to set up a <keyword id="6422364" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="space-technology">space technology</keyword> cell in collaboration with the <keyword id="116095" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-Space-Research-Organisation">Indian Space Research Organisation</keyword> (ISRO). The announcement was made on Friday by IIT Delhi Director V Ramgopal Rao, a day ahead of the varsity's 50th annual convocation where ISRO Chief K Sivan will be the chief guest. "IIT Delhi is going to set up a space technology centre in collaboration with ISRO to contribute to the space technology research," Rao told reporters. With the move, IIT Delhi will join the league of other premiere institutions like IISc Bangalore, IIT Bombay, IIT Kanpur, IIT Kharagpur, IIT Madras, IIT Guwahati and IIT Roorkee where the Space Technology Cells (STCs) have been set up to play a major role in taking up the space technology research and applications to the newer heights.

The recently released rankings unveiled the top 75 institutes in India for higher education. The first position was given to IIT-Bombay followed by Indian Institute of Science (IISc) in Bengaluru. Among the top 10 institutions are seven IITs located in Bombay, Delhi, Madras, Kanpur and Kharagpur, IISc Bengaluru, University of Hyderabad and the University of Delhi. The <a href="https://www.topuniversities.com/universities/indian-institute-technology-bombay-iitb">overall scores given to IIT-Bombay was 48.5</a> which were derived from indicators like academic reputation (52.5), employer reputation (72.9), faculty-student numbers (43.3), citations per faculty (54.1), international students (4.1) and internal faculty (1.8). IIT-Bombay stands at 162nd position in QS’ global rankings. Jawaharlal Nehru University was excluded from the ranking as it focuses more on research. The QS India ranking is specially designed to reveal the positions of institutions focusing on graduation or post graduation. Surprisingly, The only private institute to make it to the top 20 list was Birla Institute of Science and Technology As per the report, twenty out of seventy-five <keyword id="5111110" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-Institution">Indian institution</keyword> have scored full marks for recruiting highly qualified staff with PhD degrees. Further, nine students scored 98.4 in paper per faculty, an indicator which assesses research productivity. Why specific rankings for India? QS India ranking is the second region-specific ranking by QS after China. The British organisation has recently decided to bring out country-specific rankings beginning with China, India, South Korea, Japan and Mexico. The region-specific rankings are a response to the increasing demand of information from within the nation rather than in the global context. India’s educational system has witnessed a massive change over the last decade. It is the third largest higher-education hub housing thousands of universities across the country. Their international rank has slipped further this year, according to The World University Rankings 2020. Only six Indian institutes featured in top 500 global university rankings

<ul><li><keyword id="55119" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-Institute-of-Technology">Indian Institute of Technology</keyword> (IITs) had 2,400 dropout cases in the last two years. </li><li>A majority of them were at the postgraduate or PhD level. </li><li>Almost half (50%) of the dropouts were from Delhi and Kharagpur campuses. </li><li>IITs enroll nearly 17,000 students in its undergraduate and postgraduate courses every year.</li></ul>As many as 2,461 students dropped out of <a href="https://www.ndtv.com/education/over-2-400-dropout-from-iits-since-2017-47-6-are-sc-st-obc-2076985">Indian Institute of Technology (IITs)</a> in the last two years. And, a majority of them were pursuing either postgraduate courses or doctoral programmes. “The reasons may be attributed to shifting to other colleges, personal reasons, medical reasons, placement during PG courses and pursuing higher education abroad,” Union minister <keyword id="60487" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ramesh-Pokhriyal">Ramesh Pokhriyal</keyword> Nishank told the Rajya Sabha during a recent session in the Parliament. Every year, the IITs enroll 17,000 students across undergraduate and postgraduate courses. Bad health, bad grades The undergraduates are dropping out due to poor academic performance and medical reasons. Almost half of the students, 1,400 of them, who quit are from <keyword id="6354859" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="IIt">IIT</keyword>’s Delhi and Kharagpur campuses. Masters students however could be quitting as they are being offered jobs at state-owned firms, especially in Delhi. “On some occasions, we saw 60 students drop out from an M.Tech batch of 80. Over 2,400 students dropped out of India’s most prestigious IITs  in last two years

In India, there are 20 IIMs at present. In all of these institutions, the selection process consists of three stages. However, each of these IIMs follow an independent admission process. A good performance in the CAT examination is mandatory for admission to any IIM. However, the other factors considered for admission include academics, diversified interests, work experience and GD-PI-WAT performance of the candidate also play a decisive role in the admission. Here is an overview of the three stages of the admission process in IIM. Stage-1: CAT Performance Performing well in the CAT examination is the primary requisite to qualify for the IIM selection process. The candidate’s percentile score in the CAT examination will decide if he or she can hope to get into IIM at all. A high score in CAT examination is the first step of the selection process. The minimum requirement prescribed for admission to different IIMs range between 70 to 85 sectional percentile and 80 to 95 overall percentile. For example, IIM Ahmedabad needs 70 sectional and 80 overall percentile for admission while some new IIMs require 75 to 85 sectional percentile and 90 overall percentile. Thus the sectional and overall percentile requirement differs between different IIMs. Stage-2: IIM Shortlisting process Once the candidate has obtained the percentile score specified by the given IIM, the shortlisting process starts. Each of the IIMs has its own policy regarding the shortlisting in the second stage of admission process. The aspects considered for shortlisting include the CAT examination score, academics, diversity, and work experience besides some others. Stage-3: Final selection process The final selection process at the IIMs comprise of personal interview, an ability test (written) and Group Discussion (in some IIMs). Those candidates shortlisted are invited to attend the PI round in number of cities depending on the choice given by the candidate while applying for admission to the IIM during the CAT exam registration process. The PI-WAT round is given a higher weightage than the CAT score by the IIMs. The final selection of the candidate will also depend on the academic performance and diversity of the candidate. IIM Shillong and IIM Kozhikode conduct GD round on the basis of WAT. Each of the IIMs have their own independent policy of preparing the merit list considering the candidate’s performance in the final selection round, CAT scores, academic profile, diversity, work experience and gender diversity. Common Admission Process (CAP) in the new IIMs Around 10 IIMs in the country including IIM Kashipur, Raipur, Ranchi, Rohtak, Trichy, Udaipur, Bodh Gaya, Jammu, Sambalpur, and Sirmaur adopt a common admission process. This common admission process is coordinated by IIM Ranchi. The two components of the CAP coordinated by the IIM Ranchi consist of WAT and PI. All the IIMs participating in the CAP will not conduct their own independent final admission round. Instead, they will take into account the scores of the candidates in the CAP along with the performance in other individual admission components to make the final admission offer.

What is the process of Admission in IIM (Indian Institutes of Management)

<keyword id="1595677" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="indian-researchers" source="Orion">Indian researchers</keyword> have discovered three supermassive black holes from <keyword id="1666884" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="three-galaxies" source="Orion">three galaxies</keyword> merging together to form a triple active galactic nucleus (AGN), that has a much-higher-than-normal luminosity. The rare occurrence in the nearby universe indicates that small merging groups are ideal laboratories to detect multiple accreting supermassive black holes and increases the possibility of detecting such occurrences. Supermassive black holes are difficult to detect because they do not emit any light, but can reveal their presence by interacting with their surroundings. When the dust and gas from the surroundings fall onto a supermassive <keyword id="6409890" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="black-hole" source="Orion">black hole</keyword>, some of the mass is swallowed by the black hole, but some of it is converted into energy and emitted as electromagnetic radiation that makes the black hole appear very luminous. A team of researchers from the <keyword id="385273" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="indian-institute-of-astrophysics" source="Orion">Indian Institute of Astrophysics</keyword> consisting of Jyoti Yadav, Mousumi Das, and Sudhanshu Barway along with Francoise Combes of College de France, Chaire Galaxies et Cosmologie, Paris, while studying a known interacting galaxy pair, NGC7733, and NGC7734, detected unusual emissions from the centre of NGC7734 and a large, bright clump along the northern arm of NGC7733. "Their investigations showed that the clump is moving with a different velocity compared to the galaxy NGC7733 itself. The scientists meant that this clump was not a part of NGC7733; rather, it was a small separate galaxy behind the arm. They named this galaxy NGC7733N," a release from the Ministry of Science and Technology said on Friday. The study, published as a letter in a journal Astronomy and Astrophysics, used data from the Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope (UVIT) onboard the first Indian space observatory ASTROSAT, the European integral field optical telescope called MUSE mounted on the Very Large Telescope (VLT) in Chile and infrared images from the optical telescope (IRSF) in South Africa. The UV and H-alpha images also supported the presence of the third galaxy by revealing star formation along with the tidal tails, which could have formed from the merger of NGC7733N with the larger galaxy. Each of the galaxies hosts an active supermassive black hole in their nucleus and hence form a very rare triple AGN system. According to the researchers, a major factor impacting galaxy evolution is galaxy interactions, which happen when galaxies move close by each other and exert tremendous gravitational forces on each other. During such galaxy interactions, the respective supermassive black holes can get near each other. The dual black holes start consuming gas from their surroundings and become dual AGN. The IIA team explains that if two galaxies collide, their black hole will also come closer by transferring the kinetic energy to the surrounding gas. The distance between the blackholes decreases with time until the separation is around a parsec (3.26 light-years). "The two black holes are then unable to lose any further kinetic energy in order to get even closer and merge. This is known as the final parsec problem," the researchers elaborated. "The presence of a third black hole can solve the problem. The dual merging blackholes can transfer their energy to the third blackhole and merge with each other," they added. "Many AGN pairs have been detected in the past, but triple AGN are extremely rare, and only a handful has been detected before using X-ray observations," the release noted. "However, the IIA team expects such triple AGN systems to be more common in small merging groups of galaxies. Although this study focuses only on one system, results suggest that small merging groups are ideal laboratories to detect multiple supermassive black holes," it added. Researchers at the Indian Institute of Astrophysics discover three supermassive black holes merging together

In a major disappointment for Indian education system, no Indian institution has made it to the top 100 in the <keyword id="2103273" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Times-Higher-Education-World-Reputation-Rankings">Times Higher Education World Reputation Rankings</keyword>, and that too for the fifth continuous year. 
 
The last that an Indian institution figured in this list was when Indian Institute of Science was ranked in the 91-100 band in 2011, which was the year of these rankings that are compiled by the London-based Times Higher Education weekly magazine. 
 For the sixth straight year, <keyword id="53675" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="harvard">Harvard</keyword> University has grabbed the top spot, while the United States has once again dominated the rankings, boasting of 43 institutions amongst the top 100. 
 US is loosely followed by the UK, which houses 10 universities that made it to the list, along with the <keyword id="127583" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="University-of-Cambridge">University of Cambridge</keyword> and the <keyword id="150557" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="University-of-Oxford">University of Oxford</keyword> taking the fourth and fifth spots, respectively. 
 From Asia, there were 17 institutions included in the list, a rise of seven from 10 last year. With Japan's <keyword id="211741" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="University-of-Tokyo">University of Tokyo</keyword> standing at the 12th place, China's <keyword id="167708" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Tsinghua-University">Tsinghua University</keyword> and <keyword id="216715" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Peking-University">Peking University</keyword> were ranked 18th and 21st, respectively.

Once again, no Indian institution features in the Times Higher Education World Reputation Rankings

Finally, the much awaited CAT Results are out, with 20 candidates securing 100 percentile! What's interesting this time is that all the students who scored 100 percentile marks are engineers. 
 
As per reports, this year the number of applicants rose to 2, 32,434 compared to last year's 2,18,664, as per the Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore. The exam was conducted in 138 cities across the country and the duration of the exam was of three hours. IIM Bangalore was the convener of CAT 2016. 
 The CAT entrance test, thought to be one of the toughest exam, is a gateway to admissions in <keyword id="125199" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-Institute-of-Managements">Indian Institute of Managements</keyword> and other Business schools in the country. The smartphone operated Handy Ultraviolet Disinfection Helper or Shudh has six UV lights of 15 watts each that can be individually monitored from a distance. It has been prepared jointly by J. Ramkumar, Amandeep Singh and Shivam Sachan. Singh said that amid the coronavirus pandemic, people are scared to touch any object with the fear of being contracted. At the same time, liquid disinfection has yielded quite negative effects. In such a situation, the institute has developed a device to keep the infection at bay. He said that the device can be run with Bluetooth technology. It has six lights and can be rotated up to 360 degrees. One can use the lights according to the room. If the room is large, then more lights can be used. This will disinfect the room in just 15 minutes. It can also be used to prevent infection in hospitals, hotels, malls, offices and schools. Rajkumar stated that by installing an Android application, one can remotely control the on-off, speed and location of the product using the available smartphone. The net has six 15 watt UV lights that can be individually controlled remotely. Initial testing has proved that in its complete operation, the device can disinfect a 10 sq ft room in about 15 minutes. IIT Kanpur develops UV device to disinfect room in 15 minutes

New Delhi, July 10 (IANS) To help develop the next generation of Cloud professionals, seven higher education institutions in India will adopt Cloud computing curricula from the Amazon Web Services (AWS) Educate global initiative into their mainstream college syllabus, the Cloud arm of ecommerce giant Amazon said on Friday. The Cloud computing content will be offered as part of undergraduate degree and postgraduate diploma programmes starting in September this year. Cloud computing is a top workforce skill sought by companies, as reported by a LinkedIn study conducted annually over the last five years. This new effort is aimed at providing students with knowledge and competency-based credentials in skills such as Cloud architecture, data analytics, cybersecurity, Machine Learning, and software development. "Building a cloud-ready workforce is key to enabling technology-led growth in India that will drive innovation at speed and create impact at scale," Rahul Sharma, President, India and South Asia Public Sector, Amazon Internet Services Private Limited, said in a statement. "Integrating cloud curricula as part of mainstream college education represents a shift in the way the industry and academia can come together to build the next-generation of highly-skilled Cloud professionals." The education institutions offering the newly-designed Bachelor of Technology degree programs in Information Technology (IT) and Computer Science are -- Chitkara University, Punjab; Galgotias University, Uttar Pradesh; Manav Rachna University, Delhi and NCR; Noida Institute of Engineering and Technology, Uttar Pradesh; Sharda University, Delhi and NCR; and SRM Institute of Science and Technology, Tamil Nadu. The ASM Institute of Management and Computer Studies in Maharashtra will offer syllabus combined with the AWS Educate Cloud curricula for its Post Graduate Diploma in Management -- Emerging Technology. All students participating in the degree and diploma programmes will be enrolled in AWS Educate, Amazon's global initiative to provide students comprehensive resources for building skills in the Cloud, and provided with AWS Promotional Credits to gain real-world, hands-on experience using AWS Cloud technology. Supporting this effort is IT industry body Nasscom which will facilitate greater industry participation by engaging key employers in information technology (IT) and information technology enabled services (ITES) segments in India, to build a talent pipeline equipped with cloud skills. ICT Academy, a not-for-profit society that collaborates with state governments and industry to train higher education teachers and industry-ready students, will also assist the education institutions with faculty development and curriculum alignment, AWS said. --IANS gb/na

7 Indian institutes introduce 'AWS Educate' Cloud computing curricula

The Lok Sabha on Friday passed a Bill that seeks to declare five <keyword id="627109" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-Institutes-of-Information-Technology">Indian Institutes of Information Technology</keyword> (IIITs) in public-private partnership mode as <keyword id="51717" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Institutions">institutions</keyword> of national importance along with existing 15 Indian Institutes of Information Technology. Reply to the debate over the Indian Institutes of Information Technology Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2020, Minister of Human Resource Development <keyword id="60487" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ramesh-Pokhriyal">Ramesh Pokhriyal</keyword> 'Nishank' said the Bill seeks to declare five IIITs set up under the PPP mode in Surat, Bhopal, <keyword id="6355853" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bhagalpur">Bhagalpur</keyword>, Agartala, and Raichur as institutions of national importance. Currently, these institutes are registered as Societies under the Societies Registration Act, 1860 and do not have the power to grant degrees or diplomas. On being declared institutions of national importance, the five institutes will be granted the power to grant degrees. The Bill, which was introduced in the lower House on March 4, seeks amendment to the Indian Institutes of Information Technology Act, 2014 and the Indian Institutes of Information Technology (Public-private Partnership) Act, 2017. The Indian Institutes of Information Technology (Public-Private Partnership) Act, 2017 declares certain Indian Institutes of Information Technology established under Public-Private Partnership mode as institutions of national importance. Under the Act, 15 institutes are currently incorporated as institutions of national importance.

All over the world, countries are taking to robotics with full strength and might. Even the population-heavy <st1:country-region w:st="on">China</st1:country-region> has been working on robotics like never before. But it is quite surprising that <st1:country-region w:st="on">India</st1:country-region>, a country that took to Information Technology like a fish takes to water, is somewhat lagging in picking up robotics.

	 

	It has been quite a while since robotics entered the mainstream. However, <st1:country-region w:st="on">India</st1:country-region> is yet to wake up to the advanced trend. But what causes this lethargy, you may very well ask. Well, the answer isn’t simple or straightforward, to say the least. For one, industrialisation is not easy or commonplace in agrarian economy-centred country like <st1:country-region w:st="on">India</st1:country-region>. The country essentially features what the world calls an ‘old and traditional’ <keyword id="34412" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="40" keywordseo="economy">economy</keyword>, where traditional knowledge and age-old practices are still alive to a large extent. Yet, modern economy has also remained sound and strong in this country, thanks to the large talent pool and focus on education in the recent times.<o:p></o:p>

	 

	<st1:country-region w:st="on">India</st1:country-region>’s phenomenal success in the IT space was fairytale stuff – it was a ‘never before, never after’ kind of opportunity that the country was quick to identify and seize. The <keyword id="44734" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="40" keywordseo="Indian-Government">Indian government</keyword>, with its futuristic approach, welcomed the new trend with open arms and created the space for IT to grow at different levels. Within decades, computers have turned into household devices and Indian professionals have managed to build up a global reputation.<o:p></o:p>

	 

	Although one success should trigger another, it seems to be a different story here in <st1:country-region w:st="on">India</st1:country-region>. While the world has gone to great lengths to experiment with robotics and explore the possibilities of creating newer economies by leveraging the subject knowledge, <st1:country-region w:st="on">India</st1:country-region>’s response has been lukewarm, at best.<o:p></o:p>

	 

	In a country where education is the sole focus of almost all middle-class households who form a large chunk that leads the urban economy, any futuristic discipline with application possibilities at industrial level should be lapped up eagerly. Nevertheless, robotics hasn’t quite taken off here.<o:p></o:p>

	 

	Of course, there is a school here and a summer camp there talking about robotics, and there is one dedicated institution teaching the discipline. But it is yet to gain a comprehensive outlook in <st1:country-region w:st="on">India</st1:country-region>. The industrial scope and application seem a distant possibility as the human-resource rich <st1:country-region w:st="on">India</st1:country-region> doesn’t see, at least not on its own soil, the chances of robotic knowledge becoming a part of human existence.<o:p></o:p>

	 
 To begin with, we still require an organised effort to integrate the discipline into our current education system. There is hardly any vocational course dedicated to teaching robotics at school/college level. Engineering graduates cannot opt for robotics as a separate stream, but can choose to specialise in it after graduation. And that is a real downer. The <keyword id="2238211" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="40" keywordseo="Indian-Institute-of-Robotics">Indian Institute of Robotics</keyword> is probably the lone dedicated institution for the development of this discipline. But just one facility can hardly meet the requirements of the growing population of young people who are willing to explore new avenues in this space.<o:p></o:p>

	 
 In contrast, new openings have come up in sectors such as transportation, defence &amp; security, weather and <keyword id="6356826" type="COMPANY" weightage="40" keywordseo="environment">environment</keyword>, artificial intelligence, mobile OS and home applications, especially when it comes to providing support to the aged/terminally ill/people with special needs.<o:p></o:p>

	 

	<st1:country-region w:st="on">India</st1:country-region>’s strategy for industrial development has witnessed a paradigm shift since 1991. Employment generation and disbursal of economic benefits across the classes not covered by the progress indicators have been the main concern. With the focus on manufacturing, <st1:country-region w:st="on">India</st1:country-region> is looking at pharma, biotechnology, infrastructure and food processing as the main areas of investment and growth. Although robotics can well be a beneficiary of the growth curve, along these sectors, the most tangible reason as to why it may never happen in the near future is anybody’s guess. <o:p></o:p>

	 

	Employment generation for the growing urban population, along with controlling migration from rural areas as people move to cities in search of livelihood, has many repercussions on the urban landscape. Consequently, the authorities have been spreading out industrial corridors and SEZs in areas where progress has remained a mirage. One application of robotics is the production of high-efficiency robots and those can be leveraged for a longer period of time to enhance productivity. But then, the government will have to come up with the right strategy and create livelihood options for all those people who would be displaced as a result of ‘robotisation.’<o:p></o:p>

	 

	This is the real crux of the problem. Another issue that has been bothering every other sector is ‘zero’ government backing. The Indian government is treading with great caution in this industrial biosphere and would not want to upset the applecart when it comes to ‘human first’ policies.<o:p></o:p>

	 

	As of now, interest in robotics is a personal choice and individuals are focusing more on the self-discovery methods in order to make significant progress in this field. This is the same learning curve that propelled IT to a position of strength in <st1:country-region w:st="on">India</st1:country-region>. And a similar approach may ensure growth in the robotics sector well, especially with the government’s encouragement.
