The smartphone operated Handy Ultraviolet Disinfection Helper or Shudh has six UV lights of 15 watts each that can be individually monitored from a distance. It has been prepared jointly by J. Ramkumar, Amandeep Singh and Shivam Sachan. Singh said that amid the coronavirus pandemic, people are scared to touch any object with the fear of being contracted. At the same time, liquid disinfection has yielded quite negative effects. In such a situation, the institute has developed a device to keep the infection at bay. He said that the device can be run with Bluetooth technology. It has six lights and can be rotated up to 360 degrees. One can use the lights according to the room. If the room is large, then more lights can be used. This will disinfect the room in just 15 minutes. It can also be used to prevent infection in hospitals, hotels, malls, offices and schools. Rajkumar stated that by installing an Android application, one can remotely control the on-off, speed and location of the product using the available smartphone. The net has six 15 watt UV lights that can be individually controlled remotely. Initial testing has proved that in its complete operation, the device can disinfect a 10 sq ft room in about 15 minutes. IIT Kanpur develops UV device to disinfect room in 15 minutes

<ul><li><keyword id="55119" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-Institute-of-Technology">Indian Institute of Technology</keyword> (IITs) had 2,400 dropout cases in the last two years. </li><li>A majority of them were at the postgraduate or PhD level. </li><li>Almost half (50%) of the dropouts were from Delhi and Kharagpur campuses. </li><li>IITs enroll nearly 17,000 students in its undergraduate and postgraduate courses every year.</li></ul>As many as 2,461 students dropped out of <a href="https://www.ndtv.com/education/over-2-400-dropout-from-iits-since-2017-47-6-are-sc-st-obc-2076985">Indian Institute of Technology (IITs)</a> in the last two years. And, a majority of them were pursuing either postgraduate courses or doctoral programmes. “The reasons may be attributed to shifting to other colleges, personal reasons, medical reasons, placement during PG courses and pursuing higher education abroad,” Union minister <keyword id="60487" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ramesh-Pokhriyal">Ramesh Pokhriyal</keyword> Nishank told the Rajya Sabha during a recent session in the Parliament. Every year, the IITs enroll 17,000 students across undergraduate and postgraduate courses. Bad health, bad grades The undergraduates are dropping out due to poor academic performance and medical reasons. Almost half of the students, 1,400 of them, who quit are from <keyword id="6354859" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="IIt">IIT</keyword>’s Delhi and Kharagpur campuses. Masters students however could be quitting as they are being offered jobs at state-owned firms, especially in Delhi. “On some occasions, we saw 60 students drop out from an M.Tech batch of 80. Over 2,400 students dropped out of India’s most prestigious IITs  in last two years

The Indian Institute of Technology, <keyword id="6357478" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="kanpur" source="Orion">Kanpur</keyword>, has developed a course on drone technology that would be taught at IITs, other technical institutes and skill development centres in the country. The course has been designed on the directives of the Union ministry of electronics and information technology. The ministry sees drone technology from the perspective of the future and believes the move would help in quality supply of specialists in this field. "This is why the ministry has undertaken this task of taking drone technology to students at the macro-level," said a faculty member. The task of designing the course was bestowed on two scientists of aero-space engineering -- <keyword id="13980376" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="dr-abhishek" source="Orion">Dr Abhishek</keyword> and Mangal Kothari. The duo has developed a two-year degree course in which theory and practical would be of equal importance. The course also includes new technologies in making drones. Dr Abhishek said the course had been designed keeping in mind the developing needs and the students. The course would shortly be introduced in the academic institutions. The scientists have come up with the smallest of drones equipped with cutting edge technologies apart from doing extensive research. It has been developed for the armed forces for surveillance purposes. Drone named 'Gauraiya' appears like a sparrow and weighs 239 grams. It has proved its worth in hills and mountains. Hawk is a powerhouse of 300 grams, can fly for 25 minutes and sends live footage in an area of 2 km. The Auto-Pilot is armed with artificial intelligence and this drone sends all the data to the control room even if it has crashed. The Agri-drone monitors the crop, sprinkles pesticides and makes useful suggestions. IIT Kanpur develops drone technology course for IITs, tech institutes & skill development centres

Researchers from the <keyword id="108320" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="iit-kanpur" source="Orion">IIT Kanpur</keyword> and IISc Bengaluru developed an anti-microbial air purification technology which was used by air filters, according to an official report. "The novel air purification technology used in these air filters has successfully proven its efficiency towards protecting us from life-threatening viruses. This innovation is a great addition to the R&amp;D work IIT Kanpur is involved in," Ankush Sharma, Professor-in-charge of <keyword id="14935950" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="innovation-and-incubation" source="Orion">Innovation and Incubation</keyword>, IIT Kanpur said in a statement. In the winter, an air conditioner equipped with this innovative air filter system from IIT Kanpur can purify the air with a 99 per cent filtration efficiency, said the report. "This indigenous revolutionary innovation has tremendous potential to succeed in the global market. This launch is indicative of technology catering to critical world problems," Amitabha Bandyopadhyay, Co-Professor-in-charge of Innovation and Incubation, IIT Kanpur said in a statement. This new type of air filter has proven to restrict microbial growth and is capable of capturing PM 2.5, PM 10, dust, pollen, allergens and germs from the air while purifying, the report added. IIT Kanpur researcher develops technology to turn ACs into air purifiers

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) here is going to set up a <keyword id="6422364" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="space-technology">space technology</keyword> cell in collaboration with the <keyword id="116095" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-Space-Research-Organisation">Indian Space Research Organisation</keyword> (ISRO). The announcement was made on Friday by IIT Delhi Director V Ramgopal Rao, a day ahead of the varsity's 50th annual convocation where ISRO Chief K Sivan will be the chief guest. "IIT Delhi is going to set up a space technology centre in collaboration with ISRO to contribute to the space technology research," Rao told reporters. With the move, IIT Delhi will join the league of other premiere institutions like IISc Bangalore, IIT Bombay, IIT Kanpur, IIT Kharagpur, IIT Madras, IIT Guwahati and IIT Roorkee where the Space Technology Cells (STCs) have been set up to play a major role in taking up the space technology research and applications to the newer heights.

IIT Delhi and ISRO are teaming up to research space technology

Professor Sandeep Shukla from <keyword id="6354859" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="iit" source="Orion">IIT</keyword>-Kanpur, said that the tool developed by IIT, known as HOP, can analyse cryptocurrency transactions. "The tool is cheaper than any foreign equipment. By September, our tool will be ready to serve the UP police and help in investigations in cases of <keyword id="6372331" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="cryptocurrency-fraud" source="Orion">cryptocurrency fraud</keyword>," said Shukla. ADG, Cybercrime, Subhash Chandra, emphasised on the need for cybercrime awareness programmes and capacity-building for police departments to prepare to counter the menace. "We have taken action against 37,000 accounts, banks and cards, and also recovered Rs 9.5 crore in a year," said Chandra. SP, Cybercrime, Triveni Singh said that the specific programme is an initiative of MHA and Uttar Pradesh Police and the first such event to spread cyber safety awareness and capacity-building for police departments. He said that basic skills and methodologies are required for investigation of VOIP-based calls that have become prevalent in extortion cases. Saudi Arabia’s growth came despite it being a new entrant in the rankings after it gained the status of ‘secondary emerging’ last year. India also falls in the category of secondary emerging economies. The Emerging Economies University Rankings features institutions from countries categorised as ‘advanced emerging,’ ‘secondary emerging’ or ‘frontier’ by the London Stock Exchange’s FTSE group, which manages the indices of shares. The rankings are based on 13 performance indicators including faculty, research and citations, industry income and international outlook. This includes IIT’s seven campuses — Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kanpur, Kharagpur, Madras, Roorkee and Guwahati. The older IITs are unsure of the parameters and transparency in the process. “Leading IITs i.e. IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi, IIT Guwahati, IIT Kanpur, IIT Kharagpur, IIT Madras and IIT Roorkee have decided to not participate in any of the Times Higher Education (THE) - World University Rankings this year," the IITs <a href="https://www.livemint.com/education/news/seven-top-iits-boycott-the-world-university-rankings-11587051969147.html">said in a joint statement</a>. However, they said that the decision would be reconsidered next year, provided the higher education ranking publication is able to reassure the institutions in India on their ranking procedure. The development comes after the clashes between THE and IIT Bombay when their international rank slipped further. IIT Bombay argued that the institute had not given any data for the evaluation, the last data they gave to THE for university rankings was for 2017. THE however said that they received the data. The university rankings featured only six Indian universities in the top 500. In fact, none of them made it to the top 300 universities list. This had happened for the first time in the last seven years — despite an increase in the number of Indian institutions featuring on the list. IIT Delhi’s director too said that they are making a significant contribution to the innovation system in the country. “If Delhi NCR has the highest number of tech startups/unicorns in India, IIT Delhi has played a role in it. If 14 of the 24 unicorns created by Indians are by the alumni of one single institution — IIT Delhi, then it is surely doing something right,” V Ramgopal Rao, director at IIT Delhi <a href="https://www.moneycontrol.com/news/business/economy/seven-iits-drop-out-of-participation-in-times-higher-education-rankings-2020-5155441.html">said last year</a> when <keyword id="1582424" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="THE-Rankings">the rankings</keyword> came in. Seven IITs boycott THE world rankings after IIT Bombay’s tiff with them

Kanpur, The Indian Institute of Technology (<keyword id="6354859" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="iit" source="Orion">IIT</keyword>) in Kanpur has licensed a pioneering technology to Reliance Life Sciences Pvt. Ltd. that has the potential to revolutionise the field of <keyword id="68640" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="gene-therapy" source="Orion">gene therapy</keyword>, especially for many genetic eye diseases. There are many inherited disorders caused by a faulty gene. 'Gene Therapy' is a way to replace the faulty gene with a functional version of the gene to treat such disorders. This marks the first time that a gene therapy related technology has been developed and transferred from an academic institution to a company in India. The gene therapy technology from IIT Kanpur will be further developed as an Indigenous Product by Reliance Life Sciences, said an official release from IIT-K. Developed by Prof Jayandharan <keyword id="16753139" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="giridhara-rao" source="Orion">Giridhara Rao</keyword> and <keyword id="4120902" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="shubham-maurya" source="Orion">Shubham Maurya</keyword> from the Department of Biological Sciences and Bioengineering (BSBE), IIT Kanpur, the patented technology modifies the gene of an organism to treat a hereditary disorder. In this case, the site refers to a specific location on an Adeno-associated virus (AAV) (viral vector) used for gene therapy. The technology modifies this location to optimize its ability to deliver genes to the affected cells and improve its effectiveness. The technology has the ability to improve gene therapy for many hereditary diseases, especially inherited eye diseases. It has shown significant promise in correcting the vision impairment in animal models of blindness. <keyword id="9701732" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="prof-abhay-karandikar" source="Orion">Prof Abhay Karandikar</keyword>, Director of IIT Kanpur, said, "Gene therapy using viral vectors has recently emerged as a potent tool in the field of molecular medicine. We believe that this technology holds great promise for treating a wide range of hereditary eye diseases including Leber congenital amaurosis, an eye disorder that is present from birth; and Retinitis pigmentosa, a disease causing progressive sustained vision loss." Gene therapy is one of the most potent applications of recombinant DNA technology wherein pieces of DNA from multiple sources are combined to efficiently deliver the healthy copy of the faulty gene in a manner that production of protein from the introduced gene is sustained for life. To enable this, the therapeutic DNA molecule is delivered using a virus that can infect human cells. For successful clinical application, several optimizations of the basic process is needed aimed at ensuring adequate expression of the desired gene. IIT Kanpur licenses gene therapy to Reliance Life Sciences

<ul><li>Indian universities rank almost as high as global universities in the engineering and technology domain. </li><li>According to the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings by subject, Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay, Delhi feature in the top 50 for the first time. </li><li>Department-wise, IIT Bombay and Kharagpur rank at 41st and 66th for mineral &amp; mining engineering and IIT Delhi stood at 49th for electrical &amp; electronic engineering. </li><li>Overall, five Indian institutions ranked in the top 100 universities, compared to three last year. This includes IIT Madras, Kharagpur and Kanpur. </li></ul>Indian engineers are well known around the world. Now, its universities are being ranked high especially in the engineering and technology domain. According to the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings by subject, India’s premier engineering institutions — Bombay and Delhi campus of Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) — have been ranked in the top 50 universities for the very first time. IIT Delhi ranked 44th while IIT Bombay crawled up nine spots to rank 47th in the global list. Department-wise, IIT Bombay and Kharagpur rank at 41st and 66th for mineral and mining engineering and IIT Delhi stood at 49th for electrical and electronic engineering. "It is a significant achievement of our premiere engineering institutions, which has made India proud. This is the result of continuous efforts of our government to promote the environment of research and innovation in our educational institutions," Human Resource Development (HRD) Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal 'Nishank' said. Overall, five Indian institutions ranked in the top 100 universities, compared to three last year. This includes IIT Madras, Kharagpur and Kanpur. "This is the result of the various measures we have taken in the institute on boosting the research ecosystem on the campus, strengthening our connect with the external stakeholders, significantly enhanced internationalization efforts from the institute and various other measures initiated in the last three years," IIT Delhi director V Ramgopal Rao told news agency PTI. This comes as good news to the Indian universities that were striving to make a mark, globally. Nearly 20 universities were ranked in the top 200 in the <a href="https://www.qs.com/rankings-revealed-qs-wur-asia-2020/">QS World University Rankings: Asia 2020</a> this year. However, the IITs — Bombay, Delhi and Madras campuses — did not make it to the top 30. IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi rank amongst world’s top 50 engineering colleges, as per the QS rankings

In the ongoing <keyword id="6387088" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="campus-placement" source="Orion">campus placement</keyword> season in the <keyword id="55119" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-Institute-of-Technology" source="Orion">Indian Institute of Technology</keyword> (<keyword id="108320" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="iit-kanpur" source="Orion">IIT Kanpur</keyword>), a total of 49 offers above ₹1 crore were received in the first eight days. "In the first eight days, the institute received 47 international offers. This is a big jump of 150 per cent over last year when 19 international offers were received. The highest packages so far are USD 274,250 for international and ₹1.2 crore for domestic," an official statement said. The top recruiters are Axtria, EXL, Graviton, Goldman Sachs, <keyword id="6653" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="icici-bank" source="Orion">ICICI Bank</keyword>, Intel, Microsoft, OLA, Rubrik, Samsung, Quadeye, Uber, Tiger Analytics, among others. "IIT Kanpur has witnessed excellent hiring trends across sectors this time. The numbers are very encouraging and much higher than the previous years. This growing trust the recruiters are bestowing upon the institute and its students is reflective of IIT Kanpur's resolution to thrive for excellence," the IIT-K spokesperson said. A total of 1,041 students have secured jobs through acceptance of 156 PPOs and 885 placement phase-1 offers while 287 companies have finished their recruitment process, it added. On April 6, Schlumberger told IITs that it will reduce the intake of new campus hires, withdrawing a few internships and job offers. “We will personally communicate our decision to each student who is affected by this decision,” Indian Express <a href="https://indianexpress.com/article/education/energy-major-schlumberger-withdraws-job-offers-to-fresh-iit-graduates-6373375/">reported</a> citing the letter by Gautam Reddy, MD, India and Bangladesh at Schlumberger. IIT graduates bagged ‘above-average salary packages’ this placement season According to the report, two students at IIT Delhi and Bombay have lost their jobs at Schlumberger. While two other selected graduates from IIT Kanpur and Madras have now been offered similar roles — but at lower salaries. Given the current situation, it does not help that most of the IIT graduates bagged ‘above-average salary packages’ this placement season. IIT Kharagpur students also bagged a few offers from Schlumberger. “As on date, none of the offers were revoked. That was a generic email. We haven’t heard back from them,” Parag Deshpande, vice-chairperson, CDC at IIT-Kharagpur said. “As of now we have withdrawn the offers. If the business climate changes, we will be the first to reach out to those who have been filtered through the whole recruitment process,” Reddy added. ‘We have to take care of our employees first’ Reddy also <a href="https://indianexpress.com/article/education/energy-major-schlumberger-withdraws-job-offers-to-fresh-iit-graduates-6373375/">said</a> that employees across the top management have already taken a pay cut due to the Covid-19 crisis. “We have a longstanding relationship with the IITs. I am from IIT-Bombay. Recruiting from IITs is a continuous process for us. At this point in time, when we are doing business restructuring, it’s just not fair to our current employees. We have to take care of them first. It clearly indicates how disruption in supply chain, plant shutdowns and dropping revenues forced companies to rethink placements. Gartner rescinds 11 offers at three IITs With this, Schlumberger joins Gartner, the global research advisory firm to withdraw offers given to new hires. Gartner rescinded nearly 11 offers at IIT Delhi, Madras and Kanpur campuses last month. If at all, these students are capable of getting you out of recession faster than you can imagine.” The changed environment left these young minds stranded with no job at hand. The institutes are now figuring out ways to place the students whose offers have been revoked. They are even reaching out to their alumni network to place students in the less-affected sectors. Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi is expected to release the <keyword id="116242" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="admit-cards">admit cards</keyword> for the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) 2020 today i.e January 3, 2020.
