Unknown facts about flipkart founder Sachin Bansal

<ul><li>IIT-D had submitted the new drainage plan to the <keyword id="66" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Delhi">Delhi</keyword> government 18 months ago. </li><li>One of the major suggestions is the revival of the natural drainage basins of the Capital which are fast disappearing. </li><li>PWD says that different departments are assigned specific tasks for the “theoretical report” to turn it into a practical project.</li></ul> While <a href="https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/delhi/itd-be-funny-if-it-werent-such-a-pain-city-fights-waterlogging-with-42-year-old-plan/articleshow/65045726.cms" data-type="tilCustomLink">Delhi</a> is not exactly known for the kind of monsoons Mumbai deals with, water-logging has increasingly become a problem in the Capital. A little rain results in standing water puddles, mounting traffic and a series of issues more. So, what exactly is the problem? For starters, the Capital is functioning with a drainage plan that is a few decades old. And while a new plan has been formulated, it has not been implemented yet. In 2012, Sheila Dikshit, the then chief minister of Delhi, announced that a reform in the Capital’s drainage plan was needed. Considering that the last drainage plan for the city was designed in 1976, a reform was more than a little necessary. Dikshit gave IIT Delhi (IIT-D) the task to come up with the new master plan. IIT-D submitted the new plan 18 months back, however, the Delhi government has still not taken up any of their recommendations. They are apparently facing a bureaucratic maze where “nothing has been done so far” because there are no systems in place to make the changes and the concerned people are disinterested. And thanks to that, the result is that the Capital comes to a halt after little to moderate rainfall. Here’s how the university came up with their plan Delhi has 700 km of <a href="https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/delhi/itd-be-funny-if-it-werent-such-a-pain-city-fights-waterlogging-with-42-year-old-plan/articleshow/65045726.cms">drainage </a>and IIT-D first scientifically quantified the volume of water that flows in them and then, came up with several ways to increase the volume. This included rectifying slopes of drains, width adjustments, siltation removal and revival of the natural drainage system which runs across 426.555 km in Delhi. The natural drainage basins of the Capital are fast disappearing. The 1976 drainage master plan had identified 201 major natural drainage basins. However, 44 of them can not be located anymore and the others are so “permanently” silted that no one knows about their actual dimensions any longer, like the ones in Barapullah and Najafgarh. IIT-D also pointed out that the increase in the area under paved surfaces have lead to a reduction in water percolation and are resulting in standing dirty water on the roads. The only immediate solution that they recommended was to completely clean the stormwater and the sewage system. They recommended that the Delhi Jal Board use super suckers for unclogging the sewer lanes. The draft also mentioned that the stormwater drainage system should be kept free of solid waste. Fifty percent of Delhi does not segregate between stormwater and sewage since more than half of houses are not even connected to a sewage system and therefore, open drainage is used as a dustbin. Other recommendations included complete separation of the networks carrying sewage and stormwater, unified framework for drainage with a common plan, laying down of pipes to channel rainwater away from the surface to nearby parks or water bodies and the revival of natural drains. The Public Works Department (PWD) has argued that it is only a theoretical report and it has been converted to a practical project after different departments were allocated specific tasks to make it happen. The deadline for this theory to practice plan has been set for 2031. And in all this, the Delhi government’s department of irrigation and flood control was given the task to work on it with IIT-D. All departments were given the recommendation draft for their inputs. One problem with the system is the multiplicity of agencies and the absence of a common framework on drainage. There are 10 agencies, including the municipal corporations, PWD, Delhi State Industrial and Infrastructure Development Corporation (DSIIDC), <keyword id="6371761" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="delhi-development-authority">Delhi Development Authority</keyword> (DDA), and the irrigation and flood control department. With so many authorities to deal with, IIT-D believes that lack of leadership is a major hurdle when it comes to implementing the plan. And while the plan flails through this bureaucratic maze, Delhi will just have to deal with water-logging till things work out.

But IIT Indore has turned out to be the only institution that has shown a positive trend. The institute crawled up by 53 places — from ranking 241 in 2019 to 188 in 2020. The QS rankings assess universities on 11 parameters including academic reputation, employer reputation, citations per paper and paper per faculty and others. Located in Madhya Pradesh, IIT Indore is one of the eight new IITs established by the Indian government. It came into existence a decade ago under the mentorship of IIT Bombay. In 2016, it started functioning at its own campus. Among the BRICS nations, the institute ranks 97 and is known for its high research output among the Asian universities. It scored 94 points for papers per faculty metric and 64 points for citations per paper. The rankings for other IITs in the top 200 — Bombay, Delhi, Madras, Kharagpur, Kanpur, Roorkee and Guwahati campuses — dropped as compared to last year. The elite IITs did not make it to the top 30. IIT Bombay, which is the top ranking Indian institution slipped by one spot to at 34 compared to its 2019 ranking. It ranks 21 in terms of employer reputation and 32 for academic reputation as per the list. On the other hand, IIT Delhi, which was ranked at 40th position last year dropped by three spots to 43. “The number of universities has nearly doubled, and the number of colleges has grown by 50%. India’s IIT Indore crawls up by 53 places in the top 200 Asian universities while 8 other IITs drop

<ul><li>Indian Institute of Technology(IIT) Delhi alumni have rolled out the world’s first automotive crutches that have the potential to stand on their own. </li><li>Priced at ₹2,999, the device is likely to launch on the e-commerce websites by mid-August. </li><li>It is useful for patients with <keyword id="512476" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Spinal-cord-injury">spinal cord injury</keyword>, fracture and <keyword id="1752391" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="arthroplasty">arthroplasty</keyword> of Knee and hip joints.</li></ul>Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi alumni rolled out the world’s first automotive crutches. And, they have the potential to stand on their own. The product was developed by a startup called Flexmotiv which was started by IIT Delhi students Arvind S.A, Adepu Srinivas and Girish Yadav. They were assisted from AIIMS, New Delhi. “It is the world’s first self-standing axillary crutch. At an initial stage of using the crutch, there is always a requirement of support, but Flexmotiv is designed in a way that can be used without taking any support,” Arvind SA, the co-founder of Flexmotiv<a href="https://indianexpress.com/article/education/flexmotiv-worlds-first-self-standing-crutch-designed-by-iit-delhi-alumni-5892807/"> told </a>the Indian Express. The product intends to help the elderly and the handicapped, by presenting an easy-to-use solution for walking disabilities. It is also useful for patients with spinal cord injuries, fractures and arthroplasty of knee and hip joints. The crutches can support users in sloped areas and is also useful for trekkers. The product has been tested on over 150 users and has received 600 orders already, Daily Pioneer <a href="https://www.dailypioneer.com/2019/state-editions/iit-d-develops-self-standing-auxiliary-crutch-to-help-divyang.html">reported</a>. E-commerce debut soon Priced at ₹2,999, the device is likely to be sold on e-commerce websites like Amazon, Flipkart by mid-August. In fact, the developers have been trying to push the product on Amazon “before August 15,” Arvind said. Unlike the normal crutches that are rubbered at the ends, the Flexmotiv is a leg-shaped structure with ‘toe and heel’ at the ends. This is designed to allow users to walk through muddy roads and bumpy areas. The developers hit upon the idea after a friend’s accident. It took nearly two years to develop it. “The device is designed in a way that it improves the surface adaptability thus reducing the jarring forces from 5% - 10% while walking thereby improving the user performance by 10% - 20%,” he added. IIT Delhi alumni launches the world’s first automated crutch that can stand on its own

<div class="image-container float_right" style="width:480px"><div class="image"><keyword id="6390344" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Cisco">Cisco</keyword></div></div>Cisco’s Chief Technology and Strategy Officer, Padmasree Warrior, argues that instead of focusing on the negative aspects of being the only woman in the room, women need to take advantage of the opportunities it presents.
“It’s pretty intimidating and very lonely at times; you go to a technology conference or an engineering conference, there are very few women there. At the same time it’s a blessing in the fact that you do get noticed,” says Warrior <a href="http://www.forbes.com/sites/moiraforbes/2013/07/09/ciscos-cto-do-women-in-business-give-up-their-power/">in an interview with Forbes</a>.
Warrior, who is said to be one of the prime candidates <a href="http://articles.economictimes.indiatimes.com/2013-04-18/news/38647374_1_padmasree-warrior-cisco-chambers">to succeed CEO John Chambers</a>, said that a “unique platform” is created for women in this situation, adding that women are more likely to be remembered “as the only woman in the room ‘who said that’, or the only woman in the room who was an engineer.”
She is one of four women on Cisco's 14-person executive board, according to the company's website.
Before joining Cisco she spent 23 years at Motorola. She holds a masters degree in chemical engineering from Cornell University and a bachelor's degree in chemical engineering from Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi.

IISc is placed in the 152th position while IIT Delhi secured 185th rank. Other IITs like, IIT Bombay, IIT Madras, IIT Kanpur, IIT Kharaqpur, IIT Roorkee and IIT Guwahati are included in the top 500 in the rankings. 
 Massachusetts Institute of Technology, <keyword id="101399" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Stanford-University">Stanford University</keyword>, <keyword id="97117" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Harvard-University">Harvard University</keyword>, University of Cambridge and California Institute of Technology gained top five positions in the rankings. 
 In Engineering and Technology Degrees subject category, India is represented by 6 institutes in top 150 with five IITs and IISc. In top 50 Asian universities, five Indian institutes are listed in which IISc ranked 33 and rest are IITs (IIB, IITD, IITM and IITK). In Arts and Humanities subject category, DU is placed in 210th position with <keyword id="6360386" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Jawaharlal-Nehru">Jawaharlal Nehru</keyword> University (JNU) in 247th position. In Social sciences, DU and JNU are in Top 400. 
 The <keyword id="2075863" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="QS-World-University-Rankings-by-Subject">QS World University Rankings by Subject</keyword> ranks the world's top universities in individual subject areas, covering 46 subjects as of 2017. This year, the JEE advanced rank for opting AI stood at 478 and closed at 657. Overall, IIT Bangalore and IIT Delhi continue to remain top choices for engineering aspirants. The industry estimates that India has less than 10% of data scientists available globally. IIT students are choosing AI over computer science as job prospects change

<ul><li>Indian Institute of Technology (IITs), National Institute of Technology (NITs) and Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIITs) — placed almost 77% of its graduates through campus placements. </li><li>Of the total 23,298 engineering students, 17,946 were placed on campus, according to HRD Ministry. </li><li>Bagging over 32% of offers, IIT Delhi campus witnessed an upsurge of 15% in the number of companies visiting for campus placements this year. </li><li>IIT graduates have bagged employment offers from 200 of the top 500 companies across the globe.</li></ul>India’s top notch engineering colleges — Indian Institute of Technology(IITs), National Institute of Technology (NITs) and Indian Institute of Information Technology(IIITs) — placed almost 77% of its graduates through campus placements, <a href="https://www.ndtv.com/education/engineering-campus-placement-45-engineering-graduates-found-jobs-in-2017-18-says-hrd-ministry-2069988?&amp;tb_cb=1">according to</a> the Human Resource &amp; Development Ministry (MHRD). However, if all the country’s colleges under All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) are included, the percentage of engineers places goes down 45%. <ul><li>India’s premier technical institutions have witnessed several student suicides in the last few years. </li><li>IIT Guwahati witnessed a suicide case of a student intern from Japan — who was in India for an exchange programme. </li><li>In 2019 alone, about five students have committed suicide at IIT Madras and three at the Hyderabad campus. </li></ul>Each day, about six students commit suicide due to <a href="http://www.pondiuni.edu.in/smhic/objective.html">academic failure</a> in India. And there are many such students at IITs. An exchange student from Japan committed suicide at IIT Guwahati on November 21. "He was supposed to return to his parent university on November 30 after completion of the exchange programme. The police found him hanging from the ventilator in the bathroom," IITG public relations officer told IANS. IIT Madras which is home to some 8,000 students is also under police radar. They are probing the case of 19-year-old Humanities student — <keyword id="8339525" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Fathima-Lateef">Fathima Lateef</keyword>, who allegedly killed herself in her hostel room on November 9. As per the police, Lateef’s scores were low in her internal exams. However, her parents say that alleged religious discrimination and harassment by a university professor is the cause of her death. Around the same time, an 18-year-old IIT Delhi died after falling from the fifth floor of the hostel building — and police suspect a suicide. While a few such stories do come to light after they make headlines, several others are buried in the case files. In 2019 alone, about five students have committed suicide at IIT Madras. In the last ten years, as many as 14 such cases were registered at the institute. Last month, a third-year student at <a href="https://www.indiatoday.in/crime/story/iit-hyderabad-student-suicide-haunting-note-1560601-2019-07-02">IIT Hyderabad</a> committed suicide leaving behind a note saying, “Sorry I turned out to be a waste.” The student quoted academic pressure as the cause. And, this was the third suicide on campus in the last eight months. India has the highest student suicide rate with nearly 38,000 students committing suicide since 2015. The country witnesses nearly 28% of global suicides despite accounting for 18% of the population worldwide. Suicide is the second highest cause of unnatural dealths among youngsters. Every 40 seconds, a person commits suicide. According to WHO, every person who dies by suicide leads to more than 20 people trying to attempt it. Government push for wellness centres The Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) has laid out a counselling plan for country’s most prestigious institutes — Indian Institute of Technology (IITs) — and other higher educational institutions, The Print <a href="https://theprint.in/india/education/professional-counsellors-iit-student-suicide-hrd-ministry/299898/">reported</a>. Delhi, Mumbai and Madras campuses of IITs <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/policy/society/news/india-wants-more-iits-to-have-wellness-centers-to-curb-stress-and-depression/articleshow/71424045.cms">have wellness centres</a>. Roughly 10% of students seek counselling at IIT Madras, the Indian Express reported adding that a psychiatrist visits the campus everyday. The government now wants other institutions to have them as well. It is considering associating with more than 300 counsellors, including private partners via online mechanism. Student suicides spike significantly at IIT campuses

New Delhi, Feb 4 () India and Norway on Tuesday signed four MoUs in the field of research and higher education to strengthen their bilateral partnership.
The agreements were signed here during the visit of a delegation of prominent education and research institutions from Norway led by Director-General, Anne Line Wold, Norwegian Ministry of Education and Research.
One agreement was inked between the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi and UiT, The Arctic University of Norway, for cooperation in fields such as bio-photonics, health and diagnostic tools, nanotechnology, water management and renewable energy.
Another MoU was signed between the Indraprastha Institute of Information Technology and UiT, The Arctic University of Norway, to facilitate exchange of students and staff and consolidate joint efforts towards project initiatives in national and EU arena.
The other agreements were signed between IIT Jammu and Norwegian University of Science and Technology, and IIT Mandi and Norwegian University of Science and Technology with special focus on activities in landslides, tunnels, water management, hydropower, project-based learning, student and researchers mobility and cold region technologies.
The agreement signing was witnessed by Norwegian Ambassador to India Hans Jacob Frydenlund and the head of the delegation.
"The visiting delegation from Norway has had fruitful meetings with their Indian counterparts to discuss increased student mobility between Norway and India," Frydenlund said on the occasion.
"As a part of the Norwegian government's India Strategy 2030, research cooperation and higher education are of high importance in our bilateral relationship," he said.
This visit is a key step towards achieving the goals of a stronger and deeper bilateral relationship with India in the field of higher education, Frydenlund said.
Wold said India is an important strategic partner for Norway within higher education and research.
"For Norway, exploring potential partners and connecting researchers and institutions with their counterparts in India is extremely crucial. During this visit, we have had an excellent dialogue with the Indian authorities and found several areas of common interest that will benefit both countries," she said. ASK ASK ABH

Nevertheless, the domestic demand for tertiary education of its young population — which is estimated to become the world’s largest by 2030 — is growing more rapidly than the expanded provision,” Ben Sowter, director of research at QS <a href="https://indianexpress.com/article/explained/qs-rankings-8-india-universities-in-asia-top-100-iit-bombay-34th-6140356/">said</a>. The QS rankings assess universities on 11 parameters including academic reputation, employer reputation, citations per paper and paper per faculty and others. None of the India’s top IITs feature in the list of top 30 Asian universities

The programme will take place between October 10 and 23, Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank, Minister of Human Resource and Development (MHRD) <a href="https://www.aninews.in/news/national/general-news/prime-minister-innovative-learning-program-dhruv-to-be-held-from-oct-10-hrd-minister20191009162403/">told</a> ANI. It will commence at Indian Space and Research Organisation (ISRO) in Bangalore. The programme — which will comprise of 60 students, 30 each from science and arts. It will discuss global community challenges such as agricultural problems, glacial meltdown and water conservation. It will include students across fields — from dance and singing to physics and mathematics. “Talented students from the arts and science stream have been selected from around the country for the programme. It would start on October 10 in Bangalore and conclude on October 23 at IIT Delhi,” Nishank said. The programme will be conducted in the presence of Kailasavadivoo Sivan, Chairman of Indian Space and Research Organisation (ISRO), PM’s scientific advisor Professor K Vijayraghavan, and Wing Commander Rakesh Sharma. “This is an ambitious initiative of the Modi government. Prime Minister’s innovative learning programme 'Dhruv' to kick off tomorrow at ISRO

New Delhi, Jan 22 () Japanese electronics firm Sharp on Wednesday said it is looking to scale up its air purifier business in India as it aims to cater to demand in both consumer as well as B2B space, a top company official said.
 The company, which has received approval from the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi for the efficacy of its plasmacluster ion technology to tackle toxic air pollutants, currently sells 10 models in the personal air purifier segment.
 The Japanese company has also started catering to institutional sales.
 "We are looking to bring in various kinds of applications in the personal air purifier space and are also eyeing opportunity in the B2B space," Sharp Business Systems (India) Managing Director Shinji Minatogawa told .
 He said the company is working to develop air purifiers with added features like the ones with function to kill mosquitoes.
 "Besides, in B2B space there is demand from various entities like hospitals, offices," Minatogawa said.
 He said that air purifier segment in India remained small in despite several regions facing air pollution problem. 
 "The market remains around 3-3.5 lakh units per annum which is very small. In Japan where population is just around 120 million the market is more than 2 million units annually," Minatogawa said.
 The company has around 20 per cent market share in volume terms in the home air purifiers segment in India.
 On Wednesday, the company came out with findings of a study conducted in association with IIT Delhi.
 The study demonstrated the efficacy of company's plasmacluster ion technology (PCI) to r2move polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), the toxic air pollutants.
 Sharp and IIT Delhi selected three types of PAHs to test the effectiveness of PCI.
"The PCI technology of Sharp is experimentally prove to be successful in eliminating particle bound PAHs from toxic air," IIT Delhi, Associate Professor Sagnik Dey said.
