But IIT Indore has turned out to be the only institution that has shown a positive trend. The institute crawled up by 53 places — from ranking 241 in 2019 to 188 in 2020. The QS rankings assess universities on 11 parameters including academic reputation, employer reputation, citations per paper and paper per faculty and others. Located in Madhya Pradesh, IIT Indore is one of the eight new IITs established by the Indian government. It came into existence a decade ago under the mentorship of IIT Bombay. In 2016, it started functioning at its own campus. Among the BRICS nations, the institute ranks 97 and is known for its high research output among the Asian universities. It scored 94 points for papers per faculty metric and 64 points for citations per paper. The rankings for other IITs in the top 200 — Bombay, Delhi, Madras, Kharagpur, Kanpur, Roorkee and Guwahati campuses — dropped as compared to last year. The elite IITs did not make it to the top 30. IIT Bombay, which is the top ranking Indian institution slipped by one spot to at 34 compared to its 2019 ranking. It ranks 21 in terms of employer reputation and 32 for academic reputation as per the list. On the other hand, IIT Delhi, which was ranked at 40th position last year dropped by three spots to 43. “The number of universities has nearly doubled, and the number of colleges has grown by 50%. India’s IIT Indore crawls up by 53 places in the top 200 Asian universities while 8 other IITs drop

None of the India’s top IITs feature in the list of top 30 Asian universities

<ul><li>India’s economic slowdown does not seem to affect placements across the country’s premier Indian Institute of Technology (IITs). </li><li>Students across 23 IITs received over 1,200 pre-placement offers ahead of the placement season — which will kick off from December 1. </li><li><keyword id="6361649" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Goldman-Sachs">Goldman Sachs</keyword> alone extended nearly 64 PPOs across 10 IITs including Delhi and Guwahati campuses. </li><li>IIT Delhi scored nearly 164 PPOs within one week — which is more than the offers rolled out last year.</li></ul>There is no slowdown at the country’s premier Indian Institute of Technology (IITs), not if their pre-placement offers are anything to go by. Students across 23 IITs received over 1,200 of such offers ahead of the placement season — which will kick off from December 1. Multinationals such as Goldman Sachs, Adobe, Amazon and Microsoft rolled out the most number of pre-placement offers this season. I-banking major Goldman Sachs alone extended nearly 64 offers across 10 IITs including Delhi and Guwahati. “In 2019, 96 students from these IITs summer interned with us, with approximately 70% receiving pre-placement offers to return,” Vidya Lakshmi, head of Human Capital Management at Goldman Sachs <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/jobs/iits-see-flood-of-early-offers-in-slowdown-season/articleshow/72192914.cms">told</a> ET. IIT Delhi bagged nearly 164 offers within a week — which is more than the offers in the entire placement season last year. The top employers at IIT-D include Yahoo! Y\Japan, Samsung and Qualcomm. On the other hand, IIT’s Madras, Bombay, Roorkee and Guwahati campuses scored 158, 163, 140 and 119 offers respectively. The pre-placement offers almost doubled for IIT Hyderabad students at 37 — up from 19 last year. Two students of the campus bagged overseas offers as well. Industry experts say the spike in pre-placement offers is a result of summer internships. The oldest IIT at Kharagpur bagged over 500 internship offers, 39 more than last year. “Recruiting future employees through internship programmes is a tried and tested technique amongst employers. It provides them with enough time to test the interns’ competencies for the job as well as to see if the candidates are culturally fit for their organisation or not,” online internship platform Internshala said. Students across 23 IITs received over 1,200 pre-placement offers ahead of the placement season

<ul><li>India’s premier technical institutions have witnessed several student suicides in the last few years. </li><li>IIT Guwahati witnessed a suicide case of a student intern from Japan — who was in India for an exchange programme. </li><li>In 2019 alone, about five students have committed suicide at IIT Madras and three at the Hyderabad campus. </li></ul>Each day, about six students commit suicide due to <a href="http://www.pondiuni.edu.in/smhic/objective.html">academic failure</a> in India. And there are many such students at IITs. An exchange student from Japan committed suicide at IIT Guwahati on November 21. "He was supposed to return to his parent university on November 30 after completion of the exchange programme. The police found him hanging from the ventilator in the bathroom," IITG public relations officer told IANS. IIT Madras which is home to some 8,000 students is also under police radar. They are probing the case of 19-year-old Humanities student — <keyword id="8339525" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Fathima-Lateef">Fathima Lateef</keyword>, who allegedly killed herself in her hostel room on November 9. As per the police, Lateef’s scores were low in her internal exams. However, her parents say that alleged religious discrimination and harassment by a university professor is the cause of her death. Around the same time, an 18-year-old IIT Delhi died after falling from the fifth floor of the hostel building — and police suspect a suicide. While a few such stories do come to light after they make headlines, several others are buried in the case files. In 2019 alone, about five students have committed suicide at IIT Madras. In the last ten years, as many as 14 such cases were registered at the institute. Last month, a third-year student at <a href="https://www.indiatoday.in/crime/story/iit-hyderabad-student-suicide-haunting-note-1560601-2019-07-02">IIT Hyderabad</a> committed suicide leaving behind a note saying, “Sorry I turned out to be a waste.” The student quoted academic pressure as the cause. And, this was the third suicide on campus in the last eight months. India has the highest student suicide rate with nearly 38,000 students committing suicide since 2015. The country witnesses nearly 28% of global suicides despite accounting for 18% of the population worldwide. Suicide is the second highest cause of unnatural dealths among youngsters. Every 40 seconds, a person commits suicide. According to WHO, every person who dies by suicide leads to more than 20 people trying to attempt it. Government push for wellness centres The Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) has laid out a counselling plan for country’s most prestigious institutes — Indian Institute of Technology (IITs) — and other higher educational institutions, The Print <a href="https://theprint.in/india/education/professional-counsellors-iit-student-suicide-hrd-ministry/299898/">reported</a>. Delhi, Mumbai and Madras campuses of IITs <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/policy/society/news/india-wants-more-iits-to-have-wellness-centers-to-curb-stress-and-depression/articleshow/71424045.cms">have wellness centres</a>. Roughly 10% of students seek counselling at IIT Madras, the Indian Express reported adding that a psychiatrist visits the campus everyday. The government now wants other institutions to have them as well. It is considering associating with more than 300 counsellors, including private partners via online mechanism. Student suicides spike significantly at IIT campuses

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) here is going to set up a <keyword id="6422364" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="space-technology">space technology</keyword> cell in collaboration with the <keyword id="116095" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-Space-Research-Organisation">Indian Space Research Organisation</keyword> (ISRO). The announcement was made on Friday by IIT Delhi Director V Ramgopal Rao, a day ahead of the varsity's 50th annual convocation where ISRO Chief K Sivan will be the chief guest. "IIT Delhi is going to set up a space technology centre in collaboration with ISRO to contribute to the space technology research," Rao told reporters. With the move, IIT Delhi will join the league of other premiere institutions like IISc Bangalore, IIT Bombay, IIT Kanpur, IIT Kharagpur, IIT Madras, IIT Guwahati and IIT Roorkee where the Space Technology Cells (STCs) have been set up to play a major role in taking up the space technology research and applications to the newer heights.

It would start on October 10 in Bangalore and conclude on October 23 at IIT Delhi,” Nishank said. And, they have the potential to stand on their own. The product was developed by a startup called Flexmotiv which was started by IIT Delhi students Arvind S.A, Adepu Srinivas and Girish Yadav. They were assisted from AIIMS, New Delhi. “It is the world’s first self-standing axillary crutch. At an initial stage of using the crutch, there is always a requirement of support, but Flexmotiv is designed in a way that can be used without taking any support,” Arvind SA, the co-founder of Flexmotiv<a href="https://indianexpress.com/article/education/flexmotiv-worlds-first-self-standing-crutch-designed-by-iit-delhi-alumni-5892807/"> told </a>the Indian Express. The product intends to help the elderly and the handicapped, by presenting an easy-to-use solution for walking disabilities. It is also useful for patients with spinal cord injuries, fractures and arthroplasty of knee and hip joints. The crutches can support users in sloped areas and is also useful for trekkers. E-commerce debut soon Priced at ₹2,999, the device is likely to be sold on e-commerce websites like Amazon, Flipkart by mid-August. In fact, the developers have been trying to push the product on Amazon “before August 15,” Arvind said. Unlike the normal crutches that are rubbered at the ends, the Flexmotiv is a leg-shaped structure with ‘toe and heel’ at the ends. This is designed to allow users to walk through muddy roads and bumpy areas. The developers hit upon the idea after a friend’s accident. It took nearly two years to develop it. “The device is designed in a way that it improves the surface adaptability thus reducing the jarring forces from 5% - 10% while walking thereby improving the user performance by 10% - 20%,” he added. As industries face talent shortage in the sector, IITs recently rolled out degree programmes and certifications including a Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech) in Artificial Intelligence — providing diverse options in technology courses. IIT Hyderabad has been the first institute in the country to introduce B.Tech in AI technology. The institute started its first batch this year, <a href="https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/hyderabad/with-iits-launching-new-courses-in-ai-and-ml-btech-aspirants-have-a-lot-to-choose-from/articleshow/69795185.cms">enrolling</a> 20 students to the course. “What surprised us was that many students this year chose BTech course in AI as against regular CSE (computer sciences) despite having a better score. It’s a sign that students have realised the potential of AI as a career prospect considering the scope of research and jobs in the industry,” Vineeth N Balasubramanian, associate professor at IIT Hyderabad <a href="https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/hyderabad/on-course-btech-in-ai-makes-iit-h-a-hot-pick-for-students/articleshow/69998300.cms">told</a> the Times of India. This year, the JEE advanced rank for opting AI stood at 478 and closed at 657. Overall, IIT Bangalore and IIT Delhi continue to remain top choices for engineering aspirants. The industry estimates that India has less than 10% of data scientists available globally. According to a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/iits-launch-courses-in-artificial-intelligence-and-machine-learning/articleshow/67850336.cms">survey</a> by Analytics Vidhya and ed-tech platform Great Learnings, India has 50,000 vacancies in data and analytics sector. In fact, the country is expected to create 39,000 new analytics jobs by 2020. Coping with the growing demand Indian IT majors including GE Research, Ericsson and Bosch, for their part, have also been funding various research programs at IITs. Microsoft too recently <a href="https://www.indiatoday.in/education-today/news/story/microsoft-launches-ai-labs-in-india-collaborate-with-10-institutes-1549956-2019-06-16">announced</a> that it will establish AI digital labs in India, jointly with 10 colleges and universities including Indian School of Business (ISB). IIT students are choosing AI over computer science as job prospects change

<ul><li>IIT-D had submitted the new drainage plan to the <keyword id="66" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Delhi">Delhi</keyword> government 18 months ago. </li><li>One of the major suggestions is the revival of the natural drainage basins of the Capital which are fast disappearing. </li><li>PWD says that different departments are assigned specific tasks for the “theoretical report” to turn it into a practical project.</li></ul> While <a href="https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/delhi/itd-be-funny-if-it-werent-such-a-pain-city-fights-waterlogging-with-42-year-old-plan/articleshow/65045726.cms" data-type="tilCustomLink">Delhi</a> is not exactly known for the kind of monsoons Mumbai deals with, water-logging has increasingly become a problem in the Capital. A little rain results in standing water puddles, mounting traffic and a series of issues more. So, what exactly is the problem? For starters, the Capital is functioning with a drainage plan that is a few decades old. And while a new plan has been formulated, it has not been implemented yet. In 2012, Sheila Dikshit, the then chief minister of Delhi, announced that a reform in the Capital’s drainage plan was needed. Considering that the last drainage plan for the city was designed in 1976, a reform was more than a little necessary. Dikshit gave IIT Delhi (IIT-D) the task to come up with the new master plan. IIT-D submitted the new plan 18 months back, however, the Delhi government has still not taken up any of their recommendations. They are apparently facing a bureaucratic maze where “nothing has been done so far” because there are no systems in place to make the changes and the concerned people are disinterested. And thanks to that, the result is that the Capital comes to a halt after little to moderate rainfall. Here’s how the university came up with their plan Delhi has 700 km of <a href="https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/delhi/itd-be-funny-if-it-werent-such-a-pain-city-fights-waterlogging-with-42-year-old-plan/articleshow/65045726.cms">drainage </a>and IIT-D first scientifically quantified the volume of water that flows in them and then, came up with several ways to increase the volume. This included rectifying slopes of drains, width adjustments, siltation removal and revival of the natural drainage system which runs across 426.555 km in Delhi. The natural drainage basins of the Capital are fast disappearing. The 1976 drainage master plan had identified 201 major natural drainage basins. However, 44 of them can not be located anymore and the others are so “permanently” silted that no one knows about their actual dimensions any longer, like the ones in Barapullah and Najafgarh. IIT-D also pointed out that the increase in the area under paved surfaces have lead to a reduction in water percolation and are resulting in standing dirty water on the roads. The only immediate solution that they recommended was to completely clean the stormwater and the sewage system. They recommended that the Delhi Jal Board use super suckers for unclogging the sewer lanes. The draft also mentioned that the stormwater drainage system should be kept free of solid waste. Fifty percent of Delhi does not segregate between stormwater and sewage since more than half of houses are not even connected to a sewage system and therefore, open drainage is used as a dustbin. Other recommendations included complete separation of the networks carrying sewage and stormwater, unified framework for drainage with a common plan, laying down of pipes to channel rainwater away from the surface to nearby parks or water bodies and the revival of natural drains. The Public Works Department (PWD) has argued that it is only a theoretical report and it has been converted to a practical project after different departments were allocated specific tasks to make it happen. The deadline for this theory to practice plan has been set for 2031. And in all this, the Delhi government’s department of irrigation and flood control was given the task to work on it with IIT-D. All departments were given the recommendation draft for their inputs. One problem with the system is the multiplicity of agencies and the absence of a common framework on drainage. There are 10 agencies, including the municipal corporations, PWD, Delhi State Industrial and Infrastructure Development Corporation (DSIIDC), <keyword id="6371761" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="delhi-development-authority">Delhi Development Authority</keyword> (DDA), and the irrigation and flood control department. With so many authorities to deal with, IIT-D believes that lack of leadership is a major hurdle when it comes to implementing the plan. And while the plan flails through this bureaucratic maze, Delhi will just have to deal with water-logging till things work out.
