<ul><li>The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and the Indian Institute of Science in Bangalore have developed a new bomb detection device called Raider-X. </li><li>It can detect up to 20 <keyword id="1645562" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="homemade-explosives">homemade explosives</keyword> from up to two meters away. </li><li>Raider-X’s data library can be updated to accommodate the detection of different explosives in their pure and contaminated forms. </li></ul>A new explosives detection device was unveiled at the National Workshop on Explosive Detection 2020 in Pune. Dubbed Raider-X, it can detect up to 20 explosives from a stand-off distance of two meters. Chairman of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (<a href="https://pib.gov.in/PressReleseDetailm.aspx?PRID=1604799">DRDO</a>) Satheesh Reddy said that such devices were incremental to thwarting the threat from homemade explosives.  "There is no universal solution in the field of explosive detection as it is constantly evolving. There is a need for a synergetic approach towards developing the latest explosive detectors by bringing scientific institutes, academia, security agencies, armed forces and police on one platform," said Reddy. Raider-X was developed by the High Energy Material Research Laboratory (HEMRL) — an arm of the DRDO — in Pune and the Indian Institute of Science in Bangalore. Raider-X — Features and capabilities The default Raidex-X can detect explosives from a distance of 2 meters. However, according to the director of the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER) <a href="https://www.hindustantimes.com/cities/easily-available-home-made-explosives-major-threat-drdo-chairman/story-paNxUUGO9w54d0QeCJfIAL.html">Shiva Umapathy</a>, the stand-off distance can be increased. The customisation could result in an increase in the size and weight of the kit.  The Raider-X can also discern bulk explosives even if they have been concealed. Since the nature of homemade explosives can vary and change over time, law enforcement agencies have the option to update the detector’s data library. The data library will allow the device to detect multiple explosives, in their pure form as well as with contaminants. "The device has various applications including narcotics, for local police, for customs and other detection agencies who need to detect various elements which may be explosive or non-explosive in nature," said Umapathy. In addition to working on explosive detectors, the DRDO is also working <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/defense/news/drdo-working-with-1800-industries-to-make-weapons-for-the-army/articleshow/74059242.cms">with over 1,800 industries</a> to produce weapons which will be handed over to the army. DRDO’s new bomb detection device can spot 20 homemade explosives from two meters away

He admires them because entrepreneurs walk an untrodden path and bring in new ideas in the market. He is happy that <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Indian+entrepreneurs+" target="_BLANK￿￿￿￿">Indian entrepreneurs</a> are coming up with innovative ideas every day. 
 
“Every time new entrepreneurs emerge, the frontiers are extended. We extended the frontiers with our innovations, today's young entrepreneurs are extending it further," he told ET. 
 
Starting as a tech entrepreneur, Murthy has built a global organisation and emerged a leader not just of his own company but of <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=India+Inc" target="_BLANK￿￿￿￿">India Inc</a>. But what does he want? Respect! He only seeks respect at this stage. "I said, right from the beginning, that we will seek respect from all our stakeholders. That was the foundation of everything." 
 
Talking about <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=management+" target="_BLANK￿￿￿￿">management</a> ideas, he said: "More than management ideas, I've set store in values: fairness, accountability, transparency. The rest then falls into pace. Take the issue of diversity, which is an important organisation issue today. I have practiced it since the 90s, when four of my direct reports were women - the head of quality, marketing, human resources and information systems. Fairness says you have to provide equal opportunity. Diversity flourishes in such an environment. 
 
Let’s briefly peek into his life: 
 
Leftist thinking: He is a leftist. This mind-set has everything to do with Murthy's upbringing in Mysore in the 50s and 60s. Mysore is a middle class town, where education and culture are of the essence. "My father was a staunch Nehruvian and I was strongly leftist," says Murthy. "At the dining table, he would talk about the progress the country was making under Nehru. The quality of politicians and bureaucrats was very high. The <keyword id="49737" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="IITs">IITs</keyword> and Institute of Medical Science were being built. We were all anti-US and pro-USSR because <keyword id="6358826" type="COUNTRY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Russia">Russia</keyword> had built a steel plant in India, while America had refused to help." 
 
Murthy held on to his leftist ideology till fairly late in life. After graduating in 1967 with a degree in electrical engineering from National Institute of Engineering, Mysore, Murthy had briefly joined the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore to do his masters but quit in a month ("the professors would just come in and dictate notes") to join IIT-Kanpur, where did finish his masters, in 1969. 
 
Failed Entrepreneur: Murthy once joined a former colleague from IIMA who was in charge of a think tank in Pune. The job paid Rs 900 a month and involved using operations research techniques to solve problems for public sector enterprises. He was not satisfied with the job and wanted to be an entrepreneur, with a company that would work with private sector companies as his clients. "I came to realise the only way to solve the country's problems was by creating jobs. What was required is equality of opportunity which is part of the capitalist model, not equality of outcomes, which was the communist ideal," he says. 
 
Murthy’s love life: Murthy met his to-be wife Sudha, then an engineer at <keyword id="42747" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Tata-Motors">Tata Motors</keyword> in Pune, who was introduced to him by a friend from his IIM-A days. "The relationship developed over a three year period," says Murthy." Every evening we would meet and go for long walks in Deccan Gymkhana. We had a favourite Chinese restaurant called Chun Fong and there was this place called Dakshin which served great fruit juices. 
 
Winding Down: Murthy is cultivating a more relaxed lifestyle these days. The <keyword id="393293" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Catamaran-Ventures">Catamaran Ventures</keyword> office is very close to his home, and he's there from 9 a.m. till noon, after which he returns home for an afternoon siesta. Most of his time now is spent on work related to the various institutions he's on the Boards of (including the Ford Foundation, <keyword id="358955" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="UN-Foundation">UN Foundation</keyword> and the Public Health Foundation of India). He reads more, as is evident from the book-lined walls of his office and Catamaran's reception area.

This accomplishment marks a crucial step toward the development of biocomputers—computational devices made from <keyword id="23206086" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="living-cells" source="keywords">living cells</keyword> that could revolutionise how we think about computing in the future. <h2>A history of <keyword id="23249688" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="biological-computing" source="keywords">biological computing</keyword> </h2>The concept of using living cells for computation is not entirely new. Over the past two decades, researchers worldwide have explored the potential of biological systems to perform computational tasks. The first major breakthroughs came in the early 2000s when scientists developed synthetic biology techniques to engineer cells with logic gates—the fundamental components of digital computers. These bacteria can be combined and arranged in liquid environments to execute various computational functions. In one set of experiments, the scientists were able to get them to add, subtract, and solve ten different computational problems, including determining prime numbers between 0 and 9. The bacteria's ability to answer yes-or-no questions, like "Is 4 a prime number?" or "Is 7 a prime number?" was particularly astonishing. When the bacteria were questioned chemically, they responded by secreting proteins that indicated their answers — green for "yes" and red for "no." This development underscores their capacity to function as living computers. The implications of this research are immense, not only for computational science but also for fundamental biology. “Mammalian cells make decisions all the time, and we currently have very little understanding of this decision-making process,” said Mohit Kumar Jolly, assistant professor at the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore. This study offers fresh insights into biological decision-making and could open new avenues for understanding how living organisms process information. As scientists continue to explore the computational power of living cells, the possibilities are endless. Scientist S. Somanath is all set to take over as the new Chairman of the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/business/startups/news/interview-these-former-isro-scientists-are-hoping-for-the-biggest-ever-funding-in-the-indian-spacetech-industry/articleshow/87911503.cms" data-type="tilCustomLink">Indian Space Research Organisation</a> (ISRO), succeeding K. Sivan. Somanath, who is currently Director of the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC) in the Kerala state capital, will be fourth Keralite to occupy the topmost post in the Indian space sector. The previous Malayalees who have held the top post are K. Kasturirangan, G. Madhavan Nair, and K. Radhakrishnan. Sivan was given a year's extension and his term is set to end very soon and Somnath's name was cleared for the top office way back in 2019 itself, by virtue of his seniority in the ISRO hierarchy. Somanath completed his Pre Degree from the Maharaja's College, Ernakulam and did mechanical engineering from the TKM College of Engineering, Kollam, near here and in 1985 joined the VSSC centre here and has had no reason to look back after that. He later did his Master's degree in Aerospace Engineering from the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore with specialisation in Dynamics and Control. At the ISRO, he has been associated with the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) Project during its initial phase. Later he became the Associate Director (Projects) of the VSSC and also the Project Director of the GSLV Mk-III launch vehicle in 2010. He was also the Deputy Director of Propulsion and Space Ordinance Entity till November 2014. In June 2015, he took over as Director of the Liquid Propulsion Systems Centre (LPSC) at Valiamala, Thiruvananthapuram, and served there until January 2018. Somanath then took over as Director of VSSC from Sivan who became Chairman of the ISRO and now he is all set to succeed him in the top post too.

 In Engineering and Technology Degrees subject category, India is represented by 6 institutes in top 150 with five IITs and IISc. In top 50 Asian universities, five Indian institutes are listed in which IISc ranked 33 and rest are IITs (IIB, IITD, IITM and IITK). In Arts and Humanities subject category, DU is placed in 210th position with <keyword id="6360386" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Jawaharlal-Nehru">Jawaharlal Nehru</keyword> University (JNU) in 247th position. In Social sciences, DU and JNU are in Top 400. 
 The <keyword id="2075863" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="QS-World-University-Rankings-by-Subject">QS World University Rankings by Subject</keyword> ranks the world's top universities in individual subject areas, covering 46 subjects as of 2017. The rankings aim to help prospective students identify the world's leading schools in their chosen field, with the list of subjects extended each year in response to high demand for subject-level comparisons.
