The partnership will help foster relevant skills and develop a leading pipeline of the talented workforce that will power the future of the aerospace sector in India. Under this agreement, both Airbus and IISc will collaborate to develop curriculum, training, and modules and promote research and innovation on topics such as sustainability, engineering, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence and big data, that are relevant to the aerospace sector. It will also give students an opportunity to engage with Airbus experts who will mentor them on their research projects and help them apply their learnings to address future challenges in the aerospace sector. "The Indian aerospace sector is on a growth trajectory. This is further broadening the scope for talented professionals in the country who have the right skills to meet future needs. Airbus, IISc join hands on aerospace education & research

Neutralising antibody responses against the SARS-COV-2 virus and its variants of concern (VoC) are higher among <keyword id="9617748" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="covishield" source="Orion">Covishield</keyword> recipients than those who took the indigenously made <keyword id="9485939" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="covaxin" source="Orion">Covaxin</keyword>, according to a multi-centre study. The yet-to-be peer-reviewed study, posted on the preprint server MedRxiv on Friday, also found that when compared to the pre-vaccination baseline, both vaccines elicited statistically significant antibody levels in both seronegative individuals and seropositive or those who had recovered from COVID-19 infection. Between June 2021 and January 2022, the researchers enrolled 691 participants in the 18-45 age group across four sites in urban and rural Bengaluru and <keyword id="2094" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="pune" source="Orion">Pune</keyword>. Participants received either two doses of Covaxin at 28 days apart or two doses of Covishield at three months apart. The <keyword id="1609796" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="omicron" source="Orion">Omicron</keyword> wave in early 2022 overlapped with the second dose of vaccine in two sites and with both doses in one site. Participants were sampled at six timepoints for antibody analyses and at four timepoints for cellular analyses. When compared to pre-vaccination baseline, both vaccines elicited statistically significant antibody levels in both seronegative and seropositive individuals, the researchers found. Covishield elicited immune responses of higher magnitude and breadth than Covaxin in both seronegative individuals and seropositive individuals, across cohorts representing the pre-vaccination immune history of the majority of the vaccinated Indian population. Immunologist Vineeta Bal noted that in young adult population there is a difference in the response to COVID vaccines, if individuals are already infected with SARS-CoV-2 and recovered (seropositives) versus not infected. "In seronegatives, two doses of Covishield lead to higher magnitude of antibody levels in higher proportion of vaccine recipients as compared to Covaxin recipients," Bal, from <keyword id="101852" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="indian-institute-of-science-education-and-research" source="Orion">Indian Institute of Science Education and Research</keyword> (IISER), Pune and one of the study authors, told PTI. "In terms of waning of immune response with time also Covishield vaccinated individuals retain antibodies in their blood for longer period in larger proportion of individuals,” she said. The study does not directly look for or document protection from COVID-19 in the recipients. "Levels of neutralising antibodies as well as T cell responses, according to different investigators, are indirect indicators of protection,” Bal said. "The interim results so far show that Covishield vaccination induces robust neutralising antibodies against the original SARS-CoV2; Covaxin also does it but somewhat less efficiently,” she added. "Against later variants of the virus such as Delta and Omicron, especially Omicron, neutralising antibodies triggered by Covishield are not as effective, however, they appear marginally better than in Covaxin recipients," Bal added. Prior studies comparing Covishield and Covaxin were limited to addressing only antibody responses and in particular in the health care worker population who were immunised prior to the Delta wave. There is, however, limited data on cellular immune responses elicited by these vaccines and no direct head to-head comparisons or stratification by pre-vaccination serostatus. Vaccination following exposure to the Delta or Omicron variants of SARS-CoV-2 is likely to affect the quality, quantity and duration of immune responses. For determining future COVID-19 vaccination policy when pan-coronavirus or sarbecovirus vaccines become available, it becomes important to take into account pre-vaccination immune history of the majority of the vaccinated Indian population. "Some unpublished work from other investigators in India seems to suggest that heterologous boosting i.e. Covaxin in Covishield recipients and vice versa works better than homologous boosting," Bal added.

Covishield immune responses against Covid variants higher than Covaxin: Study

A research team led by Suryasarathi Bose and Kaushik Chatterjee at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore, developed <keyword id="15812341" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="germ-destroying-air-filters" source="Orion">germ-destroying air filters</keyword> that can inactivate germs using ingredients like polyphenols and polycationic polymers commonly found in green tea. These 'green' ingredients rupture the microbes through site-specific binding. Impure air might make our life shorter to the extent that Indians lose 5-10 years of their lives because of air-borne contaminants leading to respiratory diseases, adversely affecting physical health as well as mental health, according to a report by University of Chicago. The research was supported by special grants from SERB during the challenging Covid-19 pandemic and SERB-Technology Translation Awards (SERB-TETRA) funds and a patent has been filed on this. Over continuous usage, the existing air filters become a breeding ground for captured germs. The growth of these germs clog the pores of the filter, reducing the life of the filters. Resuspension of these germs can infect people in the vicinity. The novel anti-microbial air filters were tested at the National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories and were found to deactivate SARS-CoV-2 (delta variant) with an efficiency of 99.24 per cent. This technology was transferred to AiRTH, a startup that is replacing the existing germ-growing air filters with germ-destroying air filters for commercialisation, said the Ministry of Science and Technology on Saturday. As this innovation holds promise to develop antimicrobial filters that can prevent endemics caused by air-borne pathogens, a patent was granted in 2022. These novel antimicrobial filters in our ACs, central ducts and air purifiers can play a crucial role in our fight against air pollution and mitigate the spread of air-borne pathogens like coronaviruses. IISc research team develops germ-destroying air filters

Researchers at the <keyword id="75850" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="indian-institute-of-science" source="Orion">Indian Institute of Science</keyword> (<keyword id="41780" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="iisc" source="Orion">IISc</keyword>) have joined hands with <keyword id="4676314" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="aiims-rishikesh" source="Orion">AIIMS Rishikesh</keyword> to create an algorithm that can help decipher brain scans and identify the occurrence and type of <keyword id="6366028" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="epilepsy" source="Orion">epilepsy</keyword>. The development has the potential to do away with the current practice of manual evaluation of Electroencephalogram (EEG) which can be often tedious and sometimes lead to errors. Epilepsy is a neurological condition where the brain emits sudden bursts of electrical signals in a short amount of time, resulting in seizures, fits and sometimes even death. Based on the point of origin of the brain's erratic signals, epilepsy is classified as either focal or generalised epilepsy. Focal epilepsy occurs when the erratic signals are confined to a specific region in the brain. If the signals are at random locations, then it is termed as generalised epilepsy, an IISc statement said. "The research aims to differentiate EEG of normal subjects from epileptic EEGs. Additionally, the developed algorithm attempts to identify the types of seizures. Our work is to help the neurologists make an efficient and quick automated screening and diagnosis," says Hardik J. Pandya, Assistant Professor at the <keyword id="8990790" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="department-of-electronic-systems-engineering" source="Orion">Department of Electronic Systems Engineering</keyword> (DESE) and the corresponding author of the study published in Biomedical Signal Processing and Control. During the course of their study, the team noted a novel algorithm that can sift through EEG data and identify signatures of epilepsy from the electrical signal patterns. After initial training, the algorithm was able to detect whether a human subject could have epilepsy or not -- based on these patterns in their respective analyses -- with a high degree of accuracy, the researchers say. To develop and train the algorithm, the researchers first examined EEG data from 88 human subjects acquired at AIIMS Rishikesh. Each subject underwent a 45-minute EEG test, divided into two parts: an initial 10-minute test when the subject was awake, which included photic stimulation and hyperventilation, followed by a 35-minute sleep period when the subject was asked to sleep. Next, the team analysed this data and classified different wave patterns into sharp signals, spikes and slow waves. Spikes are patterns where a signal rises and falls within a very short duration of time (70 milliseconds), while sharps are those with rises and falls spread over a slightly longer duration (250 milliseconds) and slow waves have a much longer duration (400 milliseconds). An epileptic subject shows a different set of patterns compared to a healthy individual. The researchers developed an algorithm to calculate the total number of sharp waves -- the Cumulative Sharp Count -- and use this as a parameter to detect if the subject is epileptic or not (a higher value indicates a greater chance that the subject is epileptic). The algorithm also calculates the sum of areas under the spikes and sharp curves to distinguish between focal and generalised epilepsy (a greater value indicates generalised epilepsy as opposed to focal epilepsy, which has a lower value). The researchers add that the study shows a way to identify absence seizures (those that involve a brief, sudden lapse of consciousness), using a Cumulative Spike-Wave Count; in some cases, these absence seizures are critical and can be fatal. The team then ran their algorithm on a new set of EEG data from subjects for whom the classification (whether they had epilepsy, and if so, what type of epilepsy they had) was already known to the doctors. This blind validation study successfully classified the subjects accurately in nearly 91 per cent of the cases. "We hope to refine this further by testing on more data to consider more variabilities of human EEGs until we reach the point where this becomes completely translational and robust," says Rathin K. Joshi, a PhD student in DESE and first author of the study. IISc said that a patent has been filed for the work and the algorithm is being tested for its reliability by physicians at AIIMS Rishikesh. IISC joins hands with AIIMS Rishikesh to develop algorithm that can read brain scans to detect epilepsy

A scientist from <keyword id="75850" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="indian-institute-of-science" source="Orion">Indian institute of Science</keyword> (IISc), Bengaluru, has worked on applications of emerging materials that can help computers mimic functions that the brain can perform rapidly. "While several synaptic device proposals are available in literature, none helps bridge the gap between biological neural networks and their artificial counterpart. Our work has shown that developing systems that can mimic brain-like function is achievable. It can help computers perform cognitive functions, identify people from a crowd, distinguish smell as well as learn and take decisions," IISc's Professor Mayank Shrivastava, who is also a recipient of Swarna Jayanti Fellowship 2020-21, said. Since their inception, advanced computing systems have been using von <keyword id="13076084" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="neumann-architecture" source="Orion">Neumann architecture</keyword>, which uses physically separated processing and memory blocks. While it has been the most cost-effective approach to date, physical separation of memory from the processing blocks has become the rate limiter for pushing the computational capabilities of advanced nano-electronic systems. Besides, von Neumann's architecture fails in real-time processing of information that the <keyword id="67889" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="human-brain" source="Orion">human brain</keyword> can process in a fraction of a second. Keeping these gaps in mind, an alternative architecture, inspired by the organisation of neurons (processing unit) and synapses (memory) in the human brain that emulates brain-like computing behaviour, have been explored significantly in the last decade. A significant amount of research to understand the fundamental mechanisms of the brain and explorations of various novel memory architectures is now giving the engineering community confidence that developing systems that can mimic brain-like function is an achievable goal for the coming decades. A key element of such an architecture is a memory device called the artificial synapse, which, however, must work on biological / synaptic principles. Professor Srivastava is exploring materials such as Gallium Nitride (GaN), atomically thin two-dimensional materials like Graphene, and Transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs), for various electronics, power devices, electro-optic, Thz, memory, and quantum applications. Using Graphene and 2D-TMDCc, he is extending capabilities of memory devices to work on biological / synaptic principles and bridge the gap between biological neural networks and their artificial counterpart. Currently, along with his research group, he is developing few-atom thick neuromorphic circuits, GaN-based ultra-high-power devices with high reliability, and devices / circuits for operation at THz frequencies. Professor Shrivastava's work has resulted in over 150 peer-reviewed international publications and around 50 patents, and he has set a GaN manufacturing startup named AGNIT Semiconductors. Most of these patents are either licensed by semiconductor companies or are in use in their products. He is also one of the co-founders of a Pvt. Ltd. Company. As part of this fellowship, his group plans to work on novel devices emulating brain-like (computational) behaviour. This should eventually help developing few-atom thick neuromorphic circuits, which will be capable of solving several complex problems which a human brain can solve in a fraction of seconds, but a conventional computer can't in real-time. "We are still too far from realizing a brain-like computational system. (But) the present work will give a pathway to bridge the critical gaps," said Professor Shrivastava.

Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bangalore was ranked second in the University Rankings, globally for its research facilities. This makes IISc the first Indian institution to get nearly 100,000 citations in research papers in a span of five years. Last year, the institute was ranked sixth among the top performing Indian universities. “The Indian Higher Education system is making progress in some key areas. The sector requires more substantial, sustained and strategic investments both in research and education,” Ben Sowter, QS Research Director said. Four of the 23 prominent Indian institutions ranked, improved on the performance in the higher education sector. But seven IITs reported a drop in rank. India’s premier institution Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Bombay moved up by ten spots to the 152th rank, according to <keyword id="2893769" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="QS-University-Rankings">QS University Rankings</keyword> 2020. The same year, Pratiksha <keyword id="22629" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="trust">Trust</keyword> - the fund Kris set up with his wife - announced a grant of Rs 225 crore for a <keyword id="2038777" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Centre-for-Brain-Research">Centre for Brain Research</keyword>, so it could be set up inside the <keyword id="75850" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Indian-Institute-of-Science">Indian Institute of Science</keyword> campus in <keyword id="6354321" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Bengaluru">Bengaluru</keyword> without any delay. 
 He also initiated a <keyword id="63068" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="partnership">partnership</keyword> with the Centre for <keyword id="3720863" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="brain-research-and-carnegie-melon-university">Brain Research and Carnegie Melon University</keyword>. 
Going strong in what he aims to achieve, Kris says he wants to “create a world-class institution in India for Brain Research” by first facilitating research and then commercializing it “to create products that have the potential to create real difference”. 
 
He signs off by saying - “There are two ways achieve what I have set out for; either you can collaborate with the best minds in the world in this field or you can make sure that the Indian capabilities get the best international exposure which they can implement back home.” 
This man is the right example for entrepreneurs looking to make it big. 
 
He believes that doing your homework is important, especially for fields like Artificial Intelligence, Stem Cell Research,Crypto currency, Data mining, Autonomous technology, Cognitive intelligence and more. Basically, fields which are hot topics for now and for the future.

While addressing students during their convocation ceremony at the <keyword id="75850" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Indian-Institute-of-Science">Indian Institute of Science</keyword> (IISc) in Bangalore, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/India-has-had-no-earth-shaking-invention-claims-Narayana-Murthy/articleshow/48095649.cms">NR Narayana Murthy</a>, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Infosys+">Infosys</a> co-founder and chairman emeritus wanted to know if there was a single earth-shaking invention done in India. In other words, he asked whether the country had contributed anything credible towards the overall development of science in the world. 
 
When the Indian scientist community came to know about his views soon after he finished his speech at the premiere institution last week, the reaction was predictable – “what was he (Murthy) speaking after all? And why was he speaking about innovation? What was his contribution to the scientific <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=innovation+">innovation</a> in the world? Could someone please stand up and explain?” 
 
The response was defensive, mostly rhetoric. The reason was obvious; Murthy has hit the community where it hurts. The question is why was it wrong to take stock of India’s contribution in the field of research and innovation in the last 60 years? 
 
In the convocation ceremony, Murthy has merely reiterated what most of the Indian scientists have often said about the country’s contribution towards research and innovation. He did not raise this question on an alien platform. He brought it up where it belonged to. 
 
It was, more or less, a wake-up call, pointed towards the students. 
 
If a country like Ireland could contribute in terms of research and innovation, why can’t India? Despite all social and internal conflicts, Iran and Israel have turned themselves into a research hub. On the other hand, India, which has all the resources and infrastructure, had missed the bus. 
 The <keyword id="6354512" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Infosys">Infosys</keyword> co-founder has pointed out two reasons - lack of infrastructure and focus on research – that made the country lags behind in the area of research and innovation. No doubt, India has made remarkable achievements in the field of space research. How did it happen? India has put focus on space research, encouraged new talents to work in this field and helped them with better infrastructure. The result is successful <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Mars+Mission+">Mars Mission</a> which many of the developed countries could not achieve and are jealous of. 
 
Another example is <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Green+Revolution">Green Revolution</a>, which became reality in the country with the help of improved infrastructure and a dedicated team of scientists. 
 
Now shifting our attention again to the premier institutes in the country, when we invest enormous amount of money to provide resources to such institutes, it is obvious to expect new results. The government invests a lot every year to provide required resources and infrastructure to IITs, IIMs and IISc. Therefore, the question will arise – where are the results? What are these institutes doing? 
 Scientists will defend themselves, saying research is a continuous process and it takes time to arrive at some conclusion. They will argue that they should not be compared with international institutions like <keyword id="54274" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="MIT">MIT</keyword> and <keyword id="53675" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="harvard">Harvard</keyword>. True. But, if you are not diversifying your research stream, even after you were provided with resources, it would be unfair and somebody will raise a question. 
 
One reason behind India’s failure to contribute towards research and innovation is Indian scientists who are moving outside the country and winning accolades for their contribution in science. Getting nostalgic and tracing Indian roots apart, media also has a serious task at hand, that of aiding introspection. 
 Mark F Schultz, senior scholar, centre for the protection of <keyword id="388837" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="intellectual-property">Intellectual Property</keyword> (IP), George Mason University School of Law, had written that innovation in India was lagging owing to underdeveloped IP system. 
 
He wrote, stating a research that showed stronger IP rights are associated with many positive outcomes likely to help a nation bridge the innovation gap. “Nations that protect intellectual property file more patents, have more researchers, invest more in R&amp;D, and enjoy more Foreign Direct Investment," Schultz had said.

Getting defensive won't help India's 'innovation' cause, Narayana Murthy points out some vital elements!

Infosys cofounder NR <keyword id="6355623" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Narayana-Murthy">Narayana Murthy</keyword> shares the same sentiments as that of Bharat Ratna Professor CNR Rao and believes that the <keyword id="75850" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Indian-Institute-of-Science">Indian Institute of Science</keyword> is yet to meet higher expectations and that there is work to be done. 
 
While delivering a gathering during the convocation of the IISc, Murthy on Wednesday said that as compared to western universities, India had no earth-shaking invention and urged higher educational institutes to incentivise focused research. 
 "IISc is the leader in engineering and <keyword id="2952898" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="research-in-India">research in India</keyword>. Therefore, expectations are higher. IISc can do better even by Indian standards. We all want IISc to be one of the top institutions in the world and there is work to be done,” said Murthy. 
 
Murthy said that the scientific research had not received enough attention of prime ministers since Jawaharlal Nehru. “Nehru's exhortation to Indian researchers in the US to come back to India (in 1962) resulted in the green revolution, white revolution, advances in atomic energy and the space programme. We have to recreate the magic of the sixties," he said. 
 
Murthy called on academicians, politicians, and corporate leaders and urged them to pitch in to enable impactful work in the real world. 
 
Many researchers agreed with Murthy. 
 
Vijay Kumar Sutrakar, a DRDO scientist who won the gold medal for his PhD thesis in aerospace engineering, said, “IISc lacks instrumentation and testing facilities for advanced research. We have to synchronise our syllabus with next-generation aircraft,” said Sutrakar. 
 
Dr Sheik Rehana, assistant professor with IIIT Hyderabad and gold medalist in civil engineering, told ET: "We need to deal with real problems like drainage issues in our research to learn how to solve it in real life."
