Nifty wasn't far behind, inching up over 1% during the day to close at 25790.95. What is driving this rally? And this is not just the secondary market. The primary market, i.e. IPO subscriptions are also witnessing a stellar surge in investor interest. The IPOs of Northern Arc Capital and Arkade Developers, which closed yesterday, were oversubscribed 117 times and 113 times, respectively, largely on the back of significant investments made via the QIB and NII categories. But the question is, what is driving this frenzy, which comes on the heels of the Fed's recent announcement slashing interest rates by a significant 50 basis points? Experts explain that the most direct impact of the rate cut comes in the form of higher <keyword id="20078820" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="foreign-capital-inflows" source="keywords">foreign capital inflows</keyword> into emerging markets like India. As per data from NSDL’s FPI monitor, foreign investors infused a net total of Rs 2,341.64 crore in Indian equity markets via stock exchanges, as of September 19th, 2024. Data shows that September has seen inflows of around Rs 27,862 crores in first half of September. This is around 4 times the flows seen during the entire month of August. Riding on the tide of higher foreign inflows is the strengthening of Indian Rupee. Already, the rupee has regained strength from a high of 84.0 to 83.7 over the last week, and this trend may continue in the near term. Santosh Meena, Head of Research, Swastika Investmart Ltd notes that historically, emerging markets tend to outperform during the onset of a rate-cut cycle in the U.S. “Indian markets, backed by robust fundamentals, remain resilient despite concerns over valuations. Large-cap stocks, particularly in the private banking sector, continue to look attractive, fueling the current bullish momentum. This positive trend is expected to persist unless significant negative developments arise on the domestic or global front”, he highlights. Mr. Pradeep Gupta, Co-founder &amp; Vice-chairman, Anand Rathi Group notes that this rate cut comes with some short-term benefits for the country, which means stronger rupee and potential capital inflows. "A stronger rupee would make imports cheaper, potentially improving India’s trade balance. However, these advantages may be temporary if the US economy continues to weaken. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) may follow the Fed’s lead but not immediately. Improved global sentiment could drive a rally in <keyword id="19991358" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="Indian-markets" source="keywords">Indian markets</keyword>, as emerging economies like India become more attractive to investors", notes Gupta. But note that in the longer term, the direction of the Indian stock market will depend largely on global economic conditions, and particularly the health of the US economy. If the US achieves a “soft landing”, as is targeted by Fed, and avoids a recession, Indian equities may experience gradual growth. However, if the global outlook deteriorates, Indian markets—especially mid and small-cap segments, could come face to face with increased volatility and market downturns. <h2>What should your investment strategy be?</h2>SEBI registered Investment Advisor Gaurav Goel advises having a thorough look at your portfolio whenever the equity markets hit a fresh high. Look, it is practically impossible to time the markets. But, as a smart investor, markets hitting a fresh high is a good time to rebalance your portfolio, so that you can cushion your funds from any significant downturn that will invariably stem from any market downturns thereafter "When equities hit all time highs, there is a natural tendency of equity component of your asset allocation to breach the prescribed asset allocation. In such a situation, on should reassess the asset allocation and shave off excess percentages from the equity allocation to revert to the mean". Goel also suggests hedging a portion of your portfolio by buying naked long dated put options on benchmark index like Nifty 50. This way, you'd be able to benefit from a decrease in the prices of underlying assets, without having to own it. But most importantly, "At these crests, its important to shuffle your portfolio. Remove the crap, low-value stocks that might have made their in your portfolio during bullish phase, and replace with high quality stocks. Shift your assets more toward the large cap stocks/index funds where the volatility would be less or towards sector/market caps, which are less expensive on valuations", Goel continued. As for traders looking to make the most of the ongoing upward trajectory of the market, Osho Krishan, Senior Analyst, Technical &amp; Derivatives, Angel One, advises "capitalizing on the upward momentum by taking profits, rather than adopting an aggressive stance in the overbought territory". "From a technical perspective, we have entered a phase where the market is overbought, as indicated by various metrics. Therefore, it is crucial to avoid complacency and instead adopt a practical and realistic approach to the current situation", he continued. Anirudh Garg- Founder and Fund Manager at Invasset PMS explains that "When markets hit an all-time high, investors need to reassess their strategies to navigate potential risks while still capitalizing on opportunities. However, it’s essential to understand that not every market high signals overvaluation. There’s a key difference between markets reaching record levels and being fundamentally expensive. Identifying this distinction helps avoid premature decisions based solely on market peaks". "In particular, when mid-cap and small-cap stocks exhibit stretched valuations, investors should shift their focus to high-quality companies. These are firms with robust balance sheets, consistent earnings growth, and strong competitive advantages, often found in sectors linked to steady inflation", says Garg. Naturally, quality stocks tend to be more resilient in volatile environments, offering stability and better protection against downside risk. The one-hour trading session will mark the beginning of the new year in the Hindu calendar, or Samvat 2081. Generally, markets don't see much trade or activity during this one-hour session, given that muhurat trading is largely symbolic. It stems from the Indian tradition of closing our annual financial accounts on the day of Diwali and then starting afresh with the upcoming new year. Investors look to make their first profitable transaction of the new year and believe that any new investments during this one-hour window will bring them long-term prosperity. Like with usual trades, settlement happens on a T+1 basis. Gaurav Garg, who heads the markets desk at Lemonn, a new-age <keyword id="20300872" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="stock-trading" source="keywords">stock trading</keyword> app, explains that retail investors usually make symbolic purchases of small quantities of stocks or invest in blue-chip stocks or large-cap stocks as part of their portfolio-building strategy during muhurat trading. Over the last 10 years, 8 out of 10 muhurat sessions have yielded positive returns for investors. In fact, four of these 8 sessions have delivered double-digit returns. Some of these outliers include 2021, i.e., at the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic, where Nifty’s muhurat-to-muhurat returns were a staggering 40.19%. Sensex closely followed suit with 37.65%. 2022 saw the returns from these indices slip into the reds, despite a positive muhurat day performance. Markets and Muhurat trading: How have Sensex and Nifty celebrated Diwali in the past?

Amid the ongoing selling in the Indian stock markets, the growth in the demat accounts also declined in October, highlighted a report by ICICI Securities The report highlighted that after a strong four-month period where monthly additions to demat accounts exceeded 4 million, October 2024 saw a decline in new demat accounts. It also added that the total number of accounts added in October fell to 3.45 million, down from 4.36 million in September 2024. This dip breaks the streak of steady growth in demat accounts, suggesting a possible shift in <keyword id="20030258" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="investor-sentiment" source="keywords">investor sentiment</keyword> or market conditions. "Demat accounts additions fall below 4 million after four months After four consecutive months of more than 4 million <keyword id="23912333" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="Demat-account-additions" source="keywords">demat account additions</keyword> in a month," the report said. Among depositories, the Central Depository Services Limited (CDSL) maintained a strong lead in market share. In October 2024, CDSL's share of total and incremental demat accounts stood at 79% and 90%, respectively. Meanwhile, individual investor activity showed mixed trends in September 2024 across different market segments. The report stated that the number of individual investors actively trading in the National Stock Exchange's (NSE) cash market increased slightly. In September, 15.8 million individual investors traded at least once, marking a 1.9% increase from 15.5 million in August. Over the first half of the financial year (6MFY24), a total of 29.4 million individuals participated at least once in the cash market, compared to 30.7 million for the full FY24. However, participation in the equity derivatives segment saw a downturn. The number of individual investors trading at least once in a month on the NSE's equity derivatives segment dropped by 3.6 % in September, falling to 4.46 million from 4.66 million in August. For the first half of FY24, a total of 8.7 million individuals participated in the derivatives market, a decline from 9.6 million for the entire FY24. This decline indicates a reduced interest in derivative trading among individual investors, possibly due to increased volatility or changing market preferences. The report said, "A total of 29.4 million individuals have participated at least once in 6MFY24 vs. 30.7 million in FY24. Individual investors, who traded at least once in a month on NSE's equity derivatives segment, declined 3.6% MoM in Sep'24 to 4.46 million vs. 4.66 million in Aug'24". The dip in both new demat accounts and derivatives participation among individual investors suggests a cautious outlook among retail participants. As global economic conditions remain uncertain, domestic markets face volatility amid the continued selling by foreign investors.

With the Congress and the Senate coming under Republican control and President Trump exercising power without bothering about another term in office, hugely transformational decisions are possible in the months following Trump's assumption of office. These decisions may turn out to be both good and bad" said V K Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist, Geojit Financial Services. "His pro-business initiative of 'America First' can strengthen the American economy. But if he walks his talk and imposes a 60% tariff on Chinese imports and a 10 to 20% tariff on imports from other countries, that would trigger inflation and jeopardise the Fed's policy of containing inflation, necessitating a rethink of the Fed's present policy of rate cut. This has the potential to negatively impact global stock markets,” Vijayakumar added. In the sectoral indices, a mixed performance was seen on the National Stock Exchange, with Nifty Auto, Nifty Pharma, Nifty IT, and Nifty FMCG gaining, while Nifty Bank, Nifty Metal, and Nifty Private Bank declined. Nifty and Sensex continue downward trend, selling continues despite Trump's victory

New Delhi: <keyword id="19900795" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="foreign-investors" source="keywords">Foreign investors</keyword> pulled out a massive Rs 94,000 crore (around USD 11.2 billion) from the Indian <keyword id="19925636" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="stock-market" source="keywords">stock market</keyword> in October, making it the worst-ever month in terms of outflows, triggered by the elevated valuation of domestic equities and attractive valuations of <keyword id="20295104" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Chinese-stocks" source="keywords">Chinese stocks</keyword>. Before this, foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) withdrew Rs 61,973 crore from equities in March 2020. The latest outflow came after a nine-month high investment of Rs 57,724 crore in September 2024. Since June, FPIs have consistently bought equities after withdrawing Rs 34,252 crore in April-May. Overall, FPIs have been net buyers in 2024, except for January, April and May, data with the depositories showed. Looking ahead, the trajectory of global events like geopolitical developments, interest rate movements, progress in the Chinese economy and the outcome of the US Presidential election will play a crucial role in shaping future foreign investment in <keyword id="20014814" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-equities" source="keywords">Indian equities</keyword>, Himanshu Srivastava, Associate Director, Manager Research, Morningstar Investment Research India, said. On the domestic front, key indicators like inflation trajectory, corporate earnings, and the impact of festive season demand will also be closely watched by FPIs as they assess opportunities in the Indian market, he added. According to the data, FPIs recorded a net outflow of Rs 94,017 crore in October. The intensity of net outflows could be gauged from the fact that except for one day, FPIs were net sellers throughout the month, bringing their total investment for 2024 down to Rs 6,593 crore. This relentless selling resulted in about an 8 per cent decline in benchmark indices from their peaks. Several factors contributed towards this massive withdrawal of foreign capital from the Indian equity markets in October. The major among them is the elevated valuations of Indian equities. This has triggered a shift in investments towards China, where valuations are currently more attractive. Additionally, a series of stimulus measures, aimed at bolstering Chinese economic growth has made Chinese equities increasingly appealing to global investors, Srivastava said. Despite the massive FPI selling in financials, this sector is resilient since the valuations are fair and every selling is being absorbed by DIIs and individual investors, particularly HNIs, VK Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist, Geojit Financial Services, said. In addition, FPIs pulled out Rs 4,406 crore from the debt general limit and invested Rs 100 crore from the debt Voluntary Retention Route (VRR) during the period under review. So far this year, FPIs invested Rs 1.06 lakh crore in the debt market.

The net investment by the foreign portfolio investors (<keyword id="19979726" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="FPI" source="keywords">FPI</keyword>) surged to Rs 30,772 crore so far in July indicating the good buying by the <keyword id="19900795" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="foreign-investors" source="keywords">foreign investors</keyword> in the <keyword id="19991358" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-markets" source="keywords">Indian markets</keyword>. The foreign investors have so far bought equities worth of Rs 1,30,138 crore this year. "FPI flows are expected to remain volatile this week. The markets were strong, led by strong earnings and commentary from the large-cap. This week, the markets of India, Brazil, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, and South Korea witnessed inflows, while the markets of Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam witnessed outflows" said Shrikant Chouhan, Head of Equity Research, Kotak Securities. Internationally the foreign investors this week have injected around $585 million in Brazil, $300 million in Indonesia, $324 million in Malaysia and $2,085 million in South Korea. On the other hand, Taiwan witnessed an outflow of $5325 million and Vietnam witnessed a selling of $278 million of foreign investment this week. According to market experts, foreign investors are investing in Indian markets amid a weakening in <keyword id="22484170" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="dollar-and-bond-yields" source="keywords">dollar and bond yields</keyword>, and if this trend continues, foreign investment will continue as well. "During the fortnight ending 15th July, FPIs were buyers in autos, capital goods, healthcare, IT, telecom, and oil and gas. A notable trend was the lack of buying in <keyword id="19976433" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="financial-services" source="keywords">financial services</keyword>, which partly explains the poor performance of financial services in July so far. If the recent trend of weakness in dollar and bond yields persists, FPIs are likely to continue their buying in the market," said V K Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist, at Geojit Financial Services. Foreign Institutional investors were sellers in January, April, and May, cumulatively selling equities worth around Rs 60,000 crores. However, they were buyers in February, March, and June, with cumulative purchases amounting to Rs 63,200 crores.

Foreign investors infuse Rs 15,420 crore in Indian markets this week

Experts noted that geopolitical pressure and the continued shift of foreign investment from India to China have added to the selling pressure on Indian equities. "Market has turned weak responding to negative cues from escalating geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, massive FPI selling and concerns surrounding the election results due today. The most important trigger which pulled the Nifty 5.6 per cent down from the peak has been the sustained big FPI selling during the last six trading days" said V K Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist, Geojit Financial Services. In the sectoral indices, Nifty Private Bank led the gains with a surge of 0.55 per cent at the opening session, and Nifty Bank also rose by 0.5 per cent, while Nifty FMCG, Nifty Media, and Nifty Metal faced selling pressure. Despite this, the market has corrected by 5.6 per cent due to weak sentiments. Experts also noted that there are enough indicators to suggest that FPIs have been following a 'Sell India, Buy China' strategy. Elevated valuations in India and cheaper valuations for Chinese stocks have triggered this shift in FPI strategy. "The Nifty index on Monday closed at the crucial support level of 24,800, with momentum indicators in the oversold territory, which may trigger a temporary bounce. However, a weekly close below 24,800 could lead to further declines, potentially down to 24,000" said Varun Aggarwal, MD, Profit Idea. Other Asian markets also faced high selling pressure on Tuesday, with Hong Kong's Hang Seng index down by more than 7.5 per cent at the time of this report. Japan's Nikkei index was down by 1.21 per cent, while Taiwan's weighted index dropped by 0.76 per cent.

During the podcast hosted by Chamath Palihapitiya and others, Trump expressed his commitment to retaining talent educated in American universities. He argued passionately for granting green cards as a standard benefit for graduates, regardless of the institution they attended. Trump emphasised that this policy should encompass graduates from renowned institutions like Harvard and MIT as well as from junior colleges across the country. “It’s so sad when we lose people from Harvard, MIT, the greatest schools, and lesser schools that are phenomenal schools also,” Trump lamented on the All-In Podcast. “I think you should get, automatically, as part of your diploma, a green card to be able to stay in this country and that includes junior colleges, too.” A green card affords its holder permanent residency rights in the United States and represents a crucial step towards citizenship. Trump's proposal, if enacted, could potentially introduce hundreds of thousands of new applicants for citizenship annually. Adding to the exodus of Indians who have already migrated to the US, over 200,000 Indian nationals are enrolled in institutes across the US in 2024, setting a new record. In fact, the significant surge in Indian students seeking education in the country between 2022-23 represented an unprecedented 35% increase from the year before that. At a recent campaign event in Wisconsin, Trump criticised Biden's immigration policies, particularly lambasting a new program allowing undocumented spouses of US citizens to apply for permanent residence without leaving the country. Trump characterised immigration under Biden as an "invasion" and argued against discussing amnesty, urging instead for measures to halt what he perceives as an influx of unauthorised migrants. Estimates from the Department of Homeland Security suggest that approximately 11 million migrants currently reside in the US without authorization, a statistic that has been central to Trump's arguments against leniency in immigration policy.
