Japan’s Musashi Seimitsu and Log9 Materials partner to offer EV powertrain and battery solutions

In the US, this growing trend is close to reaching double digits in terms of penetration among personal vehicles. Even in India, the penetration is growing as domestic manufacturers increasingly gravitate towards the EV segment. In addition to Tata Motors’ EV versions of Nexon, Tigor and <keyword id="20075324" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="tiago-ev" source="keywords">Tiago EV</keyword> and MG’s ZS — many other automakers are entering the EV lane too. Foremost among them is <keyword id="19909974" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="maruti-suzuki" source="keywords">Maruti Suzuki</keyword>, which is planning to launch its first EV by 2025, and Renault’s electric Kwid, Zoe and KZE are also expected to come to India soon. Such policy incentives are likely to attract even more global EV brands to India. But what do these new models of new-age tech cars mean to car buyers sitting on the fence? As per a recent analysis by CRISIL, the total cost of ownership (TCO) or total cost of ownership of passenger vehicles could work in favour of EVs in the next three years for Indian buyers. So, how does the math work for prospective owners? TCA is lower but the TCO may remain higher TCO includes the purchase price of a particular asset, plus operating costs over the asset’s life span. As of FY22, the TCO of EVs was 20-30% higher than that of all three variants which is petrol, diesel and CNG. “In FY27, we expect the economics to again remain the same. However, despite not-so-favourable cost economics, higher adoption has been witnessed initially by environment-conscious buyers,” said CRISIL. The latest analysis agrees with the <a href="https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/0361198120947089">earlier research</a> from <keyword id="20691574" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="world-resources-institute-india" source="keywords">World Resources Institute India</keyword> (<keyword id="20336071" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="wri-india" source="keywords">WRI India</keyword>) on TCO in India. The study highlighted that the TCO for EVs for personal use remains higher and may require additional financial incentives to be economically viable. The total cost of acquisition (TCA) on the other hand is lower for EVs as compared to other variants. TCA of an EV is 24% lower than that of a diesel variant, and 4% lower for a petrol variant. The TCA for an EV and a CNG variant is the same. This is due to lower registration charges for EVs amid high loan-to-value (LTV) ratios. Overall, the report expects EV penetration in the passenger vehicle segment to reach 6-8% by FY27 from a mere 1.3% in FY23. Meter down: How do EVs fare as cabs? Unlike in the PV segment, the cost dynamics are reversed for cab aggregators who want to drive in the EV lane – where even though the TCA is higher, TCO remains lower. In FY22, the TCO of EVs for cab aggregators was lower than that of petrol and diesel vehicles by around 29% and around 19%, respectively. However, the TCO of EVs is still higher than that of a CNG variant by around 13% even for commercial use. This is due to the higher running of a commercial passenger vehicle and high fossil fuel prices. The FAME-II subsidy provided by the Government of India incentivises the adoption of EVs for commercial use, including 2-wheelers, 3-wheelers, and buses for public transport. However, the TCA of an EV for a cab aggregator is still around 17% higher than that of a diesel vehicle, 26% higher than a petrol vehicle, and around 16% higher than a CNG variant. “In FY27, we expect the TCA of EVs to be lower than that of diesel and petrol variants, but higher than that of a CNG variant,” says CRISIL. The report expects the cab aggregator segment to lead the drive towards EVs, resulting in a 4% EV penetration by FY26. The taxi segment accounts for 10-15% of sales within passenger cars. However, a few challenges continue to linger, limiting the wider adoption of e-cabs on the road. A limited number of charging stations range anxiety and lack of large original equipment manufacturer (OEM) presence are hindering EV adoption. EVs used for personal use, however, are mostly charged at home, and charging infrastructure does not play a very high role there. “The lower battery cost (due to expected localisation led by the phased manufacturing programme or PMP) is expected to offset the lack of FAME subsidy and will help maintain the competitiveness of EVs against diesel and CNG variants for cab aggregators in the long run,” says CRISIL.

When compared month-on-month, auto retail sales flourished, achieving a 13% increase, with contributions from all categories. Two-wheelers, three-wheelers, passenger vehicles, tractors, and commercial vehicles expanded by 15%, 2%, 7%, 15%, and 10%, respectively, underscoring the sector's robust growth momentum.” The road ahead may be a tad slippery for passenger vehicles. A survey done by the industry association shows that the passenger vehicle segment is going through a tricky phase. While there may be a spike of bookings during the festive days, the shadow of year-end discounts looms over immediate sales. The 3W segment continued the uptick in demand during Navratri, largely driven by competitive finance options and a significant rise in e-Rickshaw interest, signalling a healthy move towards electrification. October continued this positive trend with robust market sentiments and festive celebrations contributing to increased customer bookings. The commercial vehicle segment experienced robust bookings and a positive uptake in retail sales, buoyed by festive cheer and strategic price support from manufacturers. The demand for light and small commercial vehicles surged, driven by infrastructure development activities and the need for vehicle replacement. Healthy demand was witnessed especially in segments like cement, iron ore and coal transport. The festive seasons, including Navratri, catalysed market activity, with customers taking advantage of favourable finance schemes. The PV segment navigated a complex landscape, marked by both enthusiasm and caution. During Navratri, despite regional variability, the industry witnessed a surge in bookings, buoyed by the introduction of compelling new models, particularly SUVs and the availability of attractive consumer offers. However, the impact of local elections and market saturation meant that the festive spirit didn't translate uniformly into sales across all regions. Throughout the month, the anticipation for Diwali in November and the launch of new models generated a steady demand. The period overall saw a resilient PV market, supported by a stronger product line-up unlike last year, when stock availability was a major issue."

Retail auto sales up 13% MoM in October, but high inventory levels in PV a concern

For starters, the reading is still below the pre-pandemic level. “While there has been a slight 2% decline compared to pre-Covid levels, the overall retail figures have shown improvement. The two-wheeler and commercial vehicles (CV) sales did continue to face some challenges, recording high-single-digit setbacks of 8% and 7% respectively,” said Manish Raj Singhania, president of FADA. Each sub-sector, be it two-wheelers or passenger vehicles, is expected to face a different set of challenges. Two-wheeler sales picked up in May as they grew 9% year-on-year, thanks to the wedding season and recovery in rural demand. Added to that, the changes in FAME which have taken effect from this month, also prompted higher electric 2-wheeler sales in May. The phase II of Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Electric and Hybrid Vehicles (FAME) scheme commenced in 2019 for a period of three years, and extended till March 2024. The Heavy Industries Ministry notified in late May that it has reduced the subsidy provided under the scheme to electric two wheelers. After FAME subsidies were slashed, players like <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/business/auto/news/tvs-ather-ola-hike-prices-of-electric-two-wheelers-as-new-subsidy-norms-kick-in/articleshow/100679993.cms">TVS, Ather and Ola </a>increased prices. Though seasonal factors could boost demand for two wheelers in general, there will be concerns like weather-induced walk-in reductions, inventory, and regulatory norms, said FADA. Inventory worries Passenger vehicle sales grew 4% in May year-on-year, recovering from a slump seen in April. “Improved availability of vehicles, the strength of pending orders, and the robust demand for new launches drove a positive momentum,” said Singhania. Going ahead, the industry body expects the PV sector to see increased demand, particularly for new models, compact and full-sized sports utility vehicles (SUVs) and electric vehicles (EVs). But inventory pressure and right model availability could pose challenges, it added. Three wheelers are maintaining their good run as their sales went up by 79%, while tractor sales also went up almost 10% in May, compared to last year. Commercial vehicle sales also grew 7%. The commercial vehicle segment experienced sustained growth, underpinned by the government's focus on infrastructure development. The bus segment displayed a notable increase, driven by improved financing options and higher sales in academic institutions, FADA said. Going forward, however, the CV sector anticipates improved vehicle availability but concerns about real driver emission (RDE) norms and seasonal effects may impact sales. sales of EVs registered an impressive show in May, and accounted for 8% of total vehicle retail. A surge in two-wheeler sales is also one of the reasons, as 7% of total sales in this category were EVs. The best EV show, however, was from three wheelers as it accounted for 56% of total sales in this category. May auto sales rise 10% but still below pre-Covid level with challenges in store

<ul><li><keyword id="9349591" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="blusmart" source="Orion">BluSmart</keyword> is poised to double its fleet by the end of the year and aims to have over 1,00,000 EVs on its platform by 2025.</li><li>Back in 20221, <keyword id="15125737" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Jio-BP-and-BluSmart" source="Orion">Jio-BP and BluSmart</keyword> joined hands to set up EV charging stations in India.</li><li>BluSmart has the largest fleet of electric cabs and the largest network of EV fast charging stations across Delhi NCR, according to the company.</li></ul>As India rides on the EV bandwagon with the government promoting several use cases, BluSmart is poised to double its fleet by the end of the year and aims to have over 1,00,000 EVs on its platform by 2025. Rishabh Sood, CTO, BluSmart, told IANS that from a charging infrastructure perspective, both state and central government responses have been great and have floated many projects on a PPP basis. With the ever-growing customer base, Sood added, it is imperative to have BluSmart's services up and running with zero downtime and for this, the startup relies on various AWS services to build a strong foundation. Here are the excerpts from an interview: Q: What is BluSmart's USP? How do you differentiate yourself from other players in the <keyword id="6744459" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="EV-fleet" source="Orion">EV fleet</keyword> landscape? A: BluSmart is the only ride hailing service in the country that ensures zero emission, zero surge and zero ride denials to its customers and zero financial investment from its driver partners. We believe the source of our sustainable competitive advantage is that we have built multiple small MOATs around various parts of the business, which are collectively keeping us ahead of the curve. On the customer end, by solving for the core issue of hassles of ride booking, cancellations, surge and unclean cars we have been able to build a very loyal customer base. This hassle free experience of zero surge, zero cancellation and clean cars with courteous drivers being achieved every day repeatedly is starting to become a habit. On the driver end, by solving for the core issue of driver partners' inability to buy, own and maintain assets, we have been able to build loyalties on the drier partner side, which is immensely important since they are the brand custodians on the roads and are the ones who uphold the brand promise every time. On the technology side, by solving for the core issue of "fuel being a constraint" with EVs as against ICE powered vehicles where the ride-hails tech historically has not been required to worry about the fuel inside the car. Building a technology backend which is born electric and takes a full stack approach towards solving for ride matching at scale where no human is required to take decisions and the technology optimally guides the drivers right from picking up customers to reaching the nearest EV charging stations when running out of charge. On the partner ecosystem side, by solving for the core issue of having partners who have a purpose and a vision that feeds into each other's ambitions. Having partners like BP Ventures who come with the right global experience around energy and team building. Having partners like JioBP, which is a JV between Reliance and BP in India and having the backing of the largest enterprise in India in building more EV charging infra. Having partners like Tata Motors, who have decades of experience in automobiles and have taken the right stand when it comes to EVs and is able to support the growth ambitions of BluSmart. Q: For India to achieve its vision of reducing emission intensity by 45 per cent by 2030 and reach the net-zero target by 2070, EV would have to go mainstream. What are some of the biggest roadblocks you see today in India, be it in the manufacturing, EV financing, regulatory and policy landscape? A: The country has faced supply and delivery challenges in the past in getting EVs from leading OEMs around the country due to the semiconductor chip crisis in the past 3 years. Since, the supply chain and semiconductor issues have now started to relax, we are seeing an accelerated movement towards vehicle production and delivery. We believe that the manufacturing of EVs needs to be scaled up massively to support the increased adoption of EVs which in turn will lead to economies of scale. Also entry of established players into the EV industry will provide a variety of options to the common man. From a charging infrastructure perspective, both state and central government response have been great and have floated many projects on a PPP basis. We have also partnered up with giants such as Jio BP to help our expansion plans and create more charging infrastructure. Ramping up of charging infrastructure will play a key role in achieving net zero emission. Q: Tell us about the scale of your operations/size of EV fleet in India and your projected growth trajectory over the next 5 years? A: BluSmart currently operates an electric fleet of 2,200+ EVs on its platform. BluSmart Mobility is the most preferred mode of public transportation across Delhi NCR having completed 2.5 million+ all electric trips, covering over 86 million+ clean kms with over 900,000+ app downloads with an app rating of 4.9 out of 5.0 in the last year. It has the largest fleet of electric cabs and the largest network of EV fast charging stations across Delhi NCR. On September 26, 2022, BluSmart expanded geographically and started its operations in Bengaluru as its second city. BluSmart is poised to double its fleet by the end of the year and aims to have over 1,00,000 EVs on our platform by 2025. Q: What has AWS and cloud technology enabled you to do better? A: AWS is our trusted cloud partner for its feature rich and highly performant ecosystem of diversified services. With the ever growing customer base, it is imperative to have BluSmart's services up and running with zero downtime and this is where Amazon CloudWatch helps to preemptively learn metrics breach and remediate the same automatically. BluSmart uses Amazon Aurora, which is designed for exceptionally high performance and availability at a global scale with full MySQL and PostgreSQL compatibility. We adopted Aurora because it gives us the ability to manage our data at a large scale without having to deal with maintenance and optimizations at our end. At BluSmart every decision we make is driven by data hence we wanted a petabyte-scale data warehouse service that makes it simple and cost-effective to efficiently analyze data using existing business intelligence tools therefore we decided to go with Amazon Redshift as it provides constant monitoring of operations, logs, auditing, and traceability. We discovered key improvements in cost and performance for improving speed to market and operational efficiency. During our peak demand periods, we rely on AWS Autoscaling to handle high surge in requests by scaling containers and Database read replicas to provide seamless and elated customer experience. We at BluSmart are focused on the security of our data, infrastructure and resources and we rely on various AWS security services to build a strong foundation. We will continue to explore further on AWS in the future, adding new features and capabilities along the way. Q. In terms of business outcomes, what benefits have you experienced because of running on AWS? Please provide metrics where applicable: A: We have been able to bring efficiency in handling the demand and process performance by reducing the effort of self managing and monitoring the infrastructure. Without having to spend time on infrastructure engineering, developers are able to focus on the core product development which helps us reach the market faster. Usage of autoscaling to handle the load of peak and non peak demands efficiently by dynamic scaling up and scaling down of cloud infra on an intraday basis provided a significant cost advantage over maintaining a dedicated infra for peak loads. Further, periodic snapshots, data replication and disaster recovery strategy helps us mitigate data and infrastructure risks. BluSmart to set up EV charging infra projects across India in PPP mode

<ul><li><keyword id="45224" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="mahindra" source="Orion">Mahindra</keyword> &amp; Mahindra’s electric vehicle business is still in its nascent stages, but investors have valued it on par with <keyword id="42747" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="tata-motors" source="Orion">Tata Motors</keyword>’ EV biz.</li><li>While pure numbers may not be enough to justify the steep valuation of <keyword id="46869" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="mm" source="Orion">M&amp;M</keyword> EV biz, investors might be looking at the company’s future prospects.</li><li>While Tata Motors has sold nearly 100x more electric cars than Mahindra in the last year, two financial metrics are bogging it down.</li><li>We try to decode why investors are giving M&amp;M and Tata Motors’ EV businesses the same value, despite the massive differences.</li></ul>Mahindra &amp; Mahindra has raised fresh funds from British International Investment (BII), valuing its <keyword id="5713739" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ev-business" source="Orion">EV business</keyword> at ₹70,000 crore or $9 billion — almost on par with Tata Motors’ EV business. Tata Motors’ EV business was valued at $9.1 billion after it raised $1 billion from TPG Rise Climate in October last year. The M&amp;M deal comes as a surprise to sector watchers – mostly because of an absolute data mismatch. Tata Motors has been beating M&amp;M in space – literally 100 to one. According to the latest FADA report, in FY22, M&amp;M sold a total of 156 electric cars in the passenger vehicles segment. On the other hand, Tata Motors, which has two models in the market, sold nearly 15,200 electric cars —that’s 100 times more than what M&amp;M sold. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="The electric rickshaw" comment="subhead" text="The electric rickshaw">The electric rickshaw</cmsannotation> M&amp;M’s EV business however is not just about cars. It also has a few electric three-wheelers in its portfolio, at price points which are several times lower than electric cars. This is why analysts are bullish on its EV business, and label it as a ‘proactive’ auto company, in spite of a single electric car in its portfolio – the eVerito. This car is mostly used as a cab. “M&amp;M is also proactive on the electrification front and already has an electric 3W and e-rickshaw as well as PV (e-Verito) running on Indian roads. With a pipeline of interesting launches in the electric PV as well as LCV front, the company is steadily transforming amid change in technology landscape in the auto space,” stated a report by ICICI Direct. It sold a little over 8,000 electric three-wheelers in FY22, according to FADA – also this too is comfortably lower than Tata Motors’ EV sales. M&amp;M’s executive director Rajesh Jejurikar said the company’s SUV lineup will be 20-30% electric by 2027. Eight new electric vehicles are to be launched by 2027. Of these, four will be brand new cars and four will be ‘conversions’ of existing petrol and diesel cars. IDBI Capital too has impressed with M&amp;M’s three new ‘blockbuster’ launches – the new Thar, XUV 700 and Scorpio-N – stating that it has made a comeback. In the press release, he said that this investment will “attract additional sources of private capital” into Mahindra Electric. While he did not go into further details, he said that this venture is “exciting”. Green funds, and their large appetites, could also be one of the reasons behind the large investment into M&amp;M. “Climate change is one of the biggest challenges of our time. The investment into Mahindra’s EV business is in line with our decarbonization strategy and focus of supporting sustainable business models that create new jobs, particularly for women,” said Samir Abhyankar, managing director of BII. Moreover, the former’s stock has been outperforming the index too. In per a survey by India Venture Debt Report by <keyword id="9353689" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="Stride-Ventures" source="Orion">Stride Ventures</keyword>, 82% of founders said they will strive for <keyword id="6515078" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="profitability" source="Orion">profitability</keyword> and prioritize scaling their startups in 2023. Also, 79% of VCs want to focus on profitability, while only 21% want to focus on growth. This is in contrast to 2022 when 68% of founders and 55% of VCs focused on growth rather than profitability. The survey also revealed that 71% of founders of early-stage companies plan to raise venture debt in 2023, compared to 50% of late-stage founders and 20% of growth-stage founders. Says Ishpreet Singh Gandhi, founder and managing partner, Stride Ventures, “Venture debt has become one of the key growth enablers for Indian startups.” Additionally, 74% of VCs surveyed would recommend their portfolio companies to take on venture debt in 2023. The survey results also highlighted that 62% of founders and 44% of VCs consider "engaging with bank limits" as the most important value-added service offered by a venture debt fund, with "advisory on corporate financial services" being the second most preferred service for 28% of founders and 33% of VCs. Bank limits are defined by a bank to set up amount and duration based restrictions on the transactions that can be carried out by the user. Out of a total of 170-180 venture debt deals recorded in 2022, the fintech sector emerged as the leading sector with 31% of the share, followed by consumer and agritech sector startups. The report also highlights the potential of B2B replacing fintech in 2023 for the most attractive sector for venture debt, closely followed by consumer and EV. The report also reveals that the venture debt ecosystem in India is thriving, with a 2.6 times increase in the debt amount disbursed from 2019 to 2022. The report indicates that Series D and startups beyond that stage raised the most debt in 2022, while pre-Series A stage startups completed the highest number of debt deals. Geographically, the report recorded Delhi NCR as the most active location for venture debt deals in 2022, followed by Bangalore and Mumbai. New Delhi, Mar 13 () MG Motor India on Friday said it has shortlisted Driftly Electric, a smart EV charging solutions provider, under its developer program and grant for support. Launched in January 2020, Driftly will receive grant to further expand its services through a peer-based ecosystem approach. The start-up helps electric vehicle (EV) owners to find nearby charging points through a multi-platform app by connecting EV users to charging points set up by private individuals, MG Motor India said in a statement. The charging point owners can earn revenue as users come to charge their EVs. This helps in easier monetisation for owners of EV charging points, thus bridging a major need-gap in the Indian EV market. Commenting on the development, MG Motor India President &amp; Managing Director Rajeev Chaba said, "Through this grant, we are looking forward to supporting its growth, as it is in sync with our long-term vision of catalysing India's nascent EV market by creating an end-to-end and well-integrated charging ecosystem." The aim behind the MG Developer Program &amp; Grant is to support and accelerate the evolution of the ecosystem of smart mobility in Indian automotive landscape by bringing innovative ideas and solutions to the fore, he added. Driftly Electric co-founder Sneha Roy said the lack of a reliable and versatile charging network is the most prominent hurdle to faster EV adoption in India. "Driftly aims to address this need-gap by adopting a peer-based approach that helps hosts monetise their existing charging points while allowing EV owners to seamlessly discover charging locations close to them," she added.
