Gadgil has developed low--cost solutions to some of the developing world's most intractable problems, including safe drinking water technologies, energy-efficient stoves, and ways to make efficient electric lighting affordable. He focuses on robust inventions that can be deployed as widely as possible, and together, his projects have helped more than 100 million people. Gadgil is also an expert in building energy efficiency and computational fluid dynamics of indoor air and pollutant flows. The White House said Gadgil was presented the medal "for providing life-sustaining resources to communities around the world. His innovative, inexpensive technologies help meet profound needs, from drinking water to fuel-efficient cookstoves. His work is inspired by a belief in the dignity of all people and in our power to solve the great challenges of our time." Gadgil's award is the 17th national medal overall and the second National Medal of Technology and Innovation that Berkeley Lab researchers have earned. "The world is not a fair place. I try to bend my knowledge of science, engineering, and creativity to make it a little less unfair for the people who are holding the short end of the stick. If I can make that difference, go even a little bit in that direction, I think that's fantastic," Gadgil told Barkley Lab in an interview. Gadgil earned degrees in physics from the University of Bombay (now Mumbai), the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur, and his Ph.D. from UC Berkeley. He then joined Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab) in 1980 and retired earlier this year as a faculty senior scientist; he is now an affiliate retiree of the Berkeley Lab. He formerly served as the division director of the Environmental Energy Technologies Division - now the Energy Technologies Area (ETA). He is also a distinguished professor emeritus of civil and environmental engineering at UC Berkeley. A large number of scientists are engaged in cutting edge research in various aspects of medical science, including at the National Institute of Health, universities, research institutes and bio-pharma startups. There are an estimated 4 million Indian Americans in the United States, of which about 2.5 million are potential voters in the 2020 presidential elections this November. As a presidential candidate, Trump was the first nominee to hold a separate election rally for Indian-Americans in October 2016 in New Jersey. Since then he has described himself as the best friend of India and Indian-Americans at the White House. According to the co-chair of Trump Victory Indian-American Finance Committee, Al Masson, the president is not just a sensitive guardian to his 325 million fellow Americans, he is also their resolute and humanitarian commander-in-chief. Commenting on her team's role in the current mission, Mohan said during the cruise phase heading toward Mars, their job is to figure out how the spacecraft is oriented, and make sure it is pointed correctly in space -- "solar arrays to sun, antenna to Earth, and maneuver the spacecraft to get it where we want to go." She said during the "seven minutes of terror" leading to the entry, descent, and landing on Mars, GN&amp;C determines the position of the spacecraft and commands the maneuvers to help it land safely. "As the team's operations lead, I am the primary point of communication between the GN&amp;C subsystem and the rest of the project. "I am responsible for the training of the GN&amp;C team, scheduling the mission control staffing for GN&amp;C, as well as the policies/procedures the GN&amp;C uses in the mission control room," Mohan noted. Jio, Ola, Accenture, IBM and more are looking for data scientists across India

<keyword id="6354968" type="COMPANY" weightage="40" keywordseo="London">LONDON</keyword>: In a big breakthrough, Indian scientists have done what medical science has been trying to achieve since 1930 – an <keyword id="48003" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="insulin">insulin</keyword> pill for diabetics. 
 Since insulin’s crucial discovery nearly a century ago, countless <keyword id="6359018" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="40" keywordseo="diabetes">diabetes</keyword> patients have had to inject themselves with the life-saving medicine. 
 
Now Indian scientists have reported a new development toward a long-sought insulin pill that could save millions the pain of daily shots. 
 Published in the <keyword id="73594" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="40" keywordseo="American-Chemical-Society">American Chemical Society</keyword> journal, the advance could someday not only eliminate the “ouch” factor but also get needle-wary — and weary — patients to take their medicine when they should. 
 
For years, researchers have sought a way to transform delivery of this therapy from a shot to a pill, but it has been a challenge. 
 
The body’s digestive enzymes that are so good at breaking down food also break down insulin before it can get to work. 
 
In addition, insulin doesn’t get easily absorbed through the gut into the bloodstream. 
 
To overcome these hurdles, Sanyog Jain from India’s National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research combined two approaches to shield insulin from the digestive enzymes and then get it into the blood. 
 
They packaged insulin in tiny sacs made of lipids, or fats called liposomes, which are already used in some treatments. Then, they wrapped the liposomes in layers of protective molecules called polyelectrolytes. 
 
To help these “layersomes” get absorbed into the bloodstream, they attached folic acid, a kind of vitamin B that has been shown to help transport liposomes across the intestinal wall into the blood. 
 
In rats, the delivery system lowered blood glucose levels almost as much as injected insulin, though the effects of the “layersomes” lasted longer than that of injected insulin. 
 
Diabetes inhibits the production or use of insulin, which is a hormone that helps blood glucose or blood sugar become absorbed into cells and give them energy. 
 
Diabetes is one of India’s biggest health challenges. By 2030, India’s diabetes burden is expected to cross the 100 million mark, against 87 million estimated earlier. 
 
Type 1 diabetes occurs when the body doesn’t make enough insulin, and type 2 diabetes occurs when the body doesn’t make or use insulin very well, causing glucose to remain in the blood, which can lead to serious problems. 
 Libby Dowling, <keyword id="1983423" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="40" keywordseo="care-advisor">care advisor</keyword> at Diabetes UK, said “Oral insulin could make a big difference to the lives of people with diabetes. Children, elderly people and those with a phobia of needles would benefit particularly if and when insulin capsules become a safe and effective treatment for the condition. Although more research is needed, Diabetes UK would very much like to see insulin capsules one day become a reality.” 
 
She added, “Many people with Type 2 diabetes take diabetes tablets. They are not the same as insulin. As yet insulin cannot be taken in tablet form because it would be broken down in the stomach before it could work. Diabetes tablets work in different ways to lower blood glucose levels – for example by stimulating the pancreas to produce more insulin, or by helping the body to use the insulin that it does produce more effectively”

Joe Biden picks Indian American Vivek Murthy to lead the new task force to tackle COVID-19 crisis in the US

The US has named a mountain in Antarctica after an Indian-American scientist whose biological research expedition provided crucial data about animal populations. 
 <keyword id="2391409" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Akhouri-Sinha">Akhouri Sinha</keyword>, adjunct professor in the Department of Genetics, cell biology and development at the University of Minnesota, was recognised by the US Geological Survey, which named the mountain ‘Mt Sinha,’ for the research he did as an explorer in 1971-72. 
Sinha was a member of a team that catalogued population studies of seals, whales and birds in the Bellingshausen and Amundsen seas. 
 The mountain was named by the <keyword id="2396042" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Advisory-Committee-on-Antarctic-Names">Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names</keyword> (US-ACAN) and the US Geological Survey. 
 
"Anyone can see the Mt Sinha, Antarctica, on Google.com or Bing.com," said Sinha. 
 Sinha, who graduated with a BSc degree from the <keyword id="6364092" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Allahabad-University">Allahabad University</keyword> in 1954 and an MSc degree in Zoology from the <keyword id="48975" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Patna-University">Patna University</keyword> in 1956, said he was invited to carry out research on the reproduction of Antarctic seals by the National Science Foundation Antarctic Program. He also taught in the <keyword id="63845" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="department-of-zoology">Department of Zoology</keyword> at Ranchi College from November 1956 to July 1961. Then he left for the US. 
 
"I went to Antarctica on two expeditions lasting for about 22 weeks on the US Coast Guard cutters, Southwind and Glacier, during 1972 and 1974, respectively," said Sinha. He has published more than 100 papers and has been teaching graduate level courses for almost 25 years.
