Senior diplomats of India and Nepal on Monday held a virtual meeting to review the progress made on various India-aided developmental projects being implemented in the Himalayan nation. The meeting came days after Nepal Prime Minister K P Sharma Oli telephoned his Indian counterpart <keyword id="6354477" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Narendra-Modi">Narendra Modi</keyword> to greet him on India's 74th Independence Day, in the first high-level contact after bilateral ties came under severe strain following issuance of a new political map by Nepal in May. Nepalese Foreign Secretary <keyword id="2609598" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Shanker-Das-Bairagi">Shanker Das Bairagi</keyword> and Indian Ambassador to Nepal Vinay Mohan Kwatra are leading the delegations representing their respective countries during the oversight mechanism meeting, according to Nepal Foreign Ministry sources here. The meeting, being held virtually due to the coronavirus outbreak, will assess the progress made on various India aided development projects being implemented in Nepal, the sources said. The ties between India and Nepal came under strain after Defence Minister Rajnath Singh inaugurated an 80-km-long strategically crucial road connecting the Lipulekh pass with Dharchula in Uttarakhand on May 8. Nepal protested the inauguration of the road claiming that it passed through its territory. Days later, Nepal came out with the new map showing Lipulekh, Kalapani and Limpiyadhura as its territories. In June, Nepal's Parliament approved the new political map of the country featuring areas which India maintains belong to it. In its reaction, after Nepal's lower house of parliament approved the bill, India termed as untenable the "artificial enlargement" of territorial claims by the neighbouring country. India said Nepal's action violates an understanding reached between the two countries to resolve the boundary issues through talks. Nepal and India meet to discuss development projects amid border tensions

Army chief Gen MM Naravane will arrive in Nepal on Wednesday on a three-day crucial visit, which Indian officials here say will deepen the long-standing bonds of friendship between the two armies and provide an opportunity for both sides to explore avenues to further strengthen bilateral defence partnership for mutual benefit. Naravane's visit is largely aimed at resetting relations with the Himalayan nation after the ties came under severe strain following a bitter border row. Gen Naravane is visiting Nepal at the official invitation of Nepal Army chief Gen Purnachandra Thapa. Indian Embassy spokesperson Naveen Kumar said that Gen Naravane's visit "will deepen the long-standing and customary bonds of friendship between the two armies." "His visit will provide an opportunity for both sides to discuss the bilateral defence partnership and explore avenues to further strengthen it for mutual benefit." Gen Naravane will pay homage at the martyrs' memorial at the Army Pavilion on Thursday morning and receive a guard of honour at the Nepal Army headquarters, according to Nepal Army sources. He will hold formal talks with his Nepalese counterpart at the Nepal Army headquarters on Thursday. Mutual interests between the two armies and bilateral relations will mainly feature during the talk, Nepal Army sources said. The <keyword id="78682" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-army-chief">Indian Army chief</keyword> will also gift an ambulance and medical equipment for a mobile field hospital to be operated by the Nepal Army. He will also hold interaction with senior officials at the Nepal Army headquarters. In the afternoon, Gen Naravane will meet Prime Minister and Defence Minister K.P Sharma Oli at the Prime Minister's Official Residence at Baluwatar before wrapping up his visit. "I am delighted to be visiting Nepal on their kind invitation and to meet my counterpart Gen Purna Chandra Thapa, Chief of the Army Staff of the Nepali Army. I am sure this visit will go a long way in strengthening the bonds of friendship that the two armies cherish," Gen Naravane said in New Delhi ahead of the visit. Indian Army Chief Gen MM Naravane to begin three day Nepal visit today amid border tensions with China

Amid border tension at eastern Ladakh, <keyword id="9949871" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="chinese-construction-activities">Chinese construction activities</keyword> were observed near the border at Uttarakhand. "Hut-like structures on the Chinese side, very close to Tinkar-Lipu pass of Nepal, were observed," sources said on Wednesday. "It was also found that China is engaged in construction activities in Chinese side of the General Area of Jojo village, Champa Maidan. The Jojo village is approximately seven to eight kilometres from Tinkar-Lipu pass of Nepal," said sources. Indian security agencies are now keeping close watch on movements of Chinese People's Liberation Army troops near Uttarakhand borders touching Nepal. With escalation in India and China border tension, Indian intelligence had flagged earlier that the Nepal government has directed its forces to "closely monitor" the activities of <keyword id="6354416" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-Army">Indian Army</keyword> at Lipulekh area. Lipulekh is a tri-junction between India, Nepal and China situated atop the Kalapani Valley in Uttarakhand. Nepal government's Ministry of Home Affairs issued directions to Nepalese Armed Police Force (NAPF) to closely monitor Indian Army activities in the general area of Lipulekh. Further at Lipulekh, 44 battalion of the NAPF have been deployed. It was also found that China has increased its troop deployment at Lipulekh. China has deployed 150 Light Combined Arms Brigade. The brigade was moved in August from towards the Lipulekh tri-junction. They have reinforced troops in Pala, around 10 km from the border. It was India's road construction to the Lipulekh area at 17,000 feet that had sparked a diplomatic row between India and Nepal as Kathmandu claimed the area to be its territory. The road was aimed at shortening the travel time for pilgrims visiting the Kailash Mansarovar. Following this, Nepal brought out a new political map showing the contested area as its own. Nepal is also constructing more than 200 new border posts at Indo-Nepal border. Currently, Nepal has 130 permanent border posts. India and China are locked in a more than four-month-long standoff at multiple points, hitherto unprecedented along the border. China had changed the status quo on the Line of Actual Control at various places, moving inside Indian territories. India has objected to it and is taking up the matter with China at all levels. Earlier this year, India’s state-backed Satluj Jal Vidyut Nigam (SJVN) commenced construction on one of Nepal’s largest <keyword id="743601" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="hydroelectricity">hydroelectricity</keyword> projects, Arun 3. </li></ul>India has always been increasingly wary of China’s growing closeness with its neighbours over the recent years, a key example being Nepal. In need of financing for development and <keyword id="17408" type="DOMAIN" weightage="20" keywordseo="infrastructure">infrastructure</keyword>, Nepal has signed deals worth <a href="https://www.hindustantimes.com/world-news/nepal-china-sign-8-pacts-for-projects-worth-2-4-billion/story-NW4J5RheWBbh30bQwmjBiN.html">billions of dollars</a> with China for hydroelectricity, road construction, manufacturing and agriculture projects. However, the countries’ burgeoning relationship might have just hit a snag. A state-owned Chinese power company, China Three Gorges International (CTGI), has pulled out of the West Seti hydropower project after explaining to the Nepalese government that the project isn’t feasible. The $1.2 billion undertaking would have resulted in the completion of Nepal’s first reservoir project by 2019, but without construction not even having begun yet, the project will likely be shelved indefinitely. The two sides have been sparring over the terms of the project for some time now. The Nepalese government had offered to reduce the capacity of the project by 20% to 600 MW and extend the <keyword id="511035" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="power-purchase-agreement">power purchase agreement</keyword> from 10 years to 12 years, but CTGI still felt that high displacement and transmission expenses would compromise the cost-effectiveness of the project. A possible rift The pullout of CTGI from the project will have a definite impact on the credibility of Chinese firms in Nepal, and could set a troubling precedent for similar projects. Additionally, Nepal is also wary of finding itself in a Chinese debt trap, as experienced by other South Asian countries like Pakistan and Sri Lanka. All things considered, it could be a ripe moment for India to step in. India already has a number of vested interests in Nepal’s hydropower sector, a sector that it has traditionally been monopolised. Earlier this year, in May, India’s state-backed Satluj Jal Vidyut Nigam (SJVN) commenced construction on one of Nepal’s largest hydroelectricity projects. The <a href="https://in.reuters.com/article/nepal-india-modi/india-and-nepal-pms-launch-construction-of-900-mw-power-plant-idINKBN1IC0P6">900 MW Arun-3 project </a>represented a mending of ties between India and Nepal following an economic blockade at their border in 2015 and 2016. Regardless of the outcome of the West Seti project, India should see CTGI’s exit as a way to improve its own clout in Nepal. Nepal’s Prime Minister, KP Oli, had been relying on Chinese investment to reduce the country’s dependence on India, however the latest development could see things pivoting back to the latter.

China pulling out from a $1.2 billion project in Nepal could be an opportunity for India

Even as Nepal tries to gather enough people and rescue teams to injured and death, another set of aftershock were felt across Nepal and India with it measuring 6.9 on the Richter scale—making it the biggest after the main <keyword id="6362774" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="earthquake">earthquake</keyword> that struck Nepal yesterday morning. 
 
Even as the death toll surpasses the 2,000 mark, massive rescue efforts have been mounted by the Nepalese government ably supported by rescue teams from India. More than 10 air force aircrafts and 210 NDRF teams have been sent to Nepal by India with almost 50 tonnes of relief material. So far, almost 300 Indians have been rescued from Nepal and brought back to India this morning, and efforts are on to bring another 500 Indians stranded in Nepal. 
 
Reports also suggest 61 people have been injured and 18 dead at the Everest base camp; Indian air force team is already overseeing rescue efforts in that area.

Death toll rising rapidly, aftershock continues to jolt

Visiting <keyword id="78682" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-army-chief">Indian Army Chief</keyword> <keyword id="8457212" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="general-Manoj-Mukund-Naravane">General Manoj Mukund Naravane</keyword> on Thursday held a meeting with his Nepali counterpart General Purna Chandra Thapa during which they discussed ways to enhance bilateral defence cooperation. In a solemn ceremony earlier in the day, General Naravane laid a wreath on the 'Veer Smarak' at the Army Pavilion in Tundikhel, Kathmandu, following which he visited the Nepali Army Headquarters and was accorded with a ceremonial Guard of Honour. At the headquarters, he held the meeting with General Thapa, during which the Indian Army chief was also given a comprehensive briefing by senior officers of the Nepali Army. Also on Thursday, Naravane handed over various medical equipment to the Nepal Army, which included X-Ray machines, computed radiography systems, ICU ventilators, video endoscopy units, anesthesia machines, laboratory equipment and ambulances. Additional ventilators were also gifted to assist the Nepali Army in its fight against the coronavirus pandemic. This follows an earlier army-to-army provision of ventilators in July this year. Later in the day, Naravane will receive the honorary rank of general of Nepal Army on Thursday, which will be conferred to him by President Bidhya Devi Bhandari during a function in the President's Office, according to the Nepal Army. Nepal and India have a historic tradition of conferring the honorary title to each other's army chief since 1950. He will be the 18th Indian Army Chief to be conferred with the title. General Naravane is also scheduled to hold talks with the President later. Indian and Nepal discuss enhancing bilateral defence cooperation during Indian Army Chief Naravane's three-day visit

Kathmandu, Cinema halls across Kathmandu on Friday stopped the screening of '<keyword id="9776044" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="adipurush" source="Orion">Adipurush</keyword>', a day after Mayor Balen Shah warned that no Indian movie will be allowed in the Nepal capital if the film based on the Hindu epic <keyword id="6363500" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="ramayana" source="Orion">Ramayana</keyword> does not correct the "mistake" about the birthplace of Sita. The <keyword id="17720608" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="nepal-film-union" source="Orion">Nepal Film Union</keyword> has urged all the cinema halls in Kathmandu to stop showing 'Adipurush' and urged theatres outside the capital to release it only after assessing the security situation. In a tweet on Thursday, the Mayor said that in 'Adipurush', it is mentioned that "Sita is the daughter of India". He added that until this mistake will not be corrected in India and Nepal, no Indian movie will be allowed to be shown within the Kathmandu metropolitan city limit. The film is written and directed by <keyword id="2236748" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="om-raut" source="Orion">Om Raut</keyword> and produced by T-Series and Retrophiles. Shot simultaneously in Hindi and Telugu languages, the film has courted controversy in India as well. In a statement, Nepal's QFX Cinemas said: "Keeping the security of our viewers, QFX is not going to show 'Adipurush'... We are waiting for the government's decision. As soon as this issue is resolved, we will issue another notice and apologise for the inconvenience to our viewers." Nepal's Censor Board also decided to hold back permission to the upcoming Indian epic mythological film, based on the Hindu epic "Ramayana", for the same reason. Sita was born in Nepal's Janakpur and Lord Rama came and married her, as per the Ramayana. Besides Mayor Balen Shah, some sister organisations of various political parties have also protested against the film and warned that they will not allow the screening until the filmmakers correct the mistakes regarding the birthplace of Sita. This is not the first time that Mayor Shah ratcheted up the nationalist planks. Mayor Shah on June 8 placed the map of Greater Nepal in his chamber to counter the Indian "Akhand Bharat" map placed in the new Parliament building. Kathmandu cinema halls stop screening of Adipurush over Sita birthplace issue

<keyword id="204019" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Nepal-Rastra-Bank">Nepal Rastra Bank</keyword> on Thursday banned the use of India’s new currency notes of Rs 500 and Rs 2,000 denomination, terming them “unauthorised and illegal”. These two currency notes were issued by the <keyword id="6354335" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="reserve-bank-of-india">Reserve Bank of India</keyword> recently after old Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 denomination notes were withdrawn. <keyword id="12266" type="COUNTRY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Nepal">Nepal</keyword> Rastra Bank (NRB) has called the new currency notes “unauthorised and illegal”. 
 NRB spokesperson Narayan Poudel said these new currency notes are not yet legal in Nepal, according to Onlinekhabar.com. Poudel said these notes will be legal in Nepal only when India issues a FEMA notification as per the <keyword id="6368276" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Foreign-exchange">Foreign Exchange</keyword> Management Act. India is likely to issue a FEMA notification, allowing people in Nepal and India to possess certain amount of Indian currency. Earlier, a ban was in effect in Nepal till last year against the use of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 denominations notes. Authorities had lifted this ban after the visit of Prime Minister <keyword id="6354477" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Narendra-Modi">Narendra Modi</keyword> to Nepal. Nepal last year allowed people to carry Indian Rupees of higher denominations upto Indian Rs 25,000. 
The Reserve Bank of India had formed a task force to ease currency exchange facility in Nepal for non-Indians who possess the now-defunct notes of 500 and 1,000 denominations.

Nepal bans use of new Indian Rs 500 and Rs 2000 notes, calls them illegal

The international arm of the National Payments Corporation of India (<keyword id="193629" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="npci" source="Orion">NPCI</keyword>) on Thursday announced to deploy <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/business/telecom/news/how-to-use-upi-autopay-to-recharge-jio-number/articleshow/88754552.cms" data-type="tilCustomLink">Unified Payments Interface</a> (UPI) in Nepal to bolster interoperable real-time person-to-person (P2P), person to merchant (P2M) and potential cross-border P2P remittances between Nepal and India. Nepal is the first country outside India to adopt UPI as the payments platform, driving the digitalisation of cash transactions. The NPCI International Payments Limited (NIPL), the global arm of the NPCI joined hands with the Gateway Payments Service Pvt Ltd, an authorised Payment System Operators in Nepal, and Manam Infotech Private Limited to deploy UPI in the country. "The partnership will enable consumers within Nepal to transact swiftly using state-of-the-art UPI platform and deliver a seamless user experience. We are confident that this initiative will stand as a testimony to NIPL's technological capabilities and vision of scaling our unique offerings globally," said Ritesh Shukla, CEO of NIPL. It will also enable the way forward for real-time cross-border P2P remittances between Nepal and India. In 2021, UPI enabled 39 billion financial transactions amounting to commerce worth $940 billion, which is equivalent to approximately 31 per cent of India's GDP. "The same UPI service has created a significant positive impact in India in terms of the country's digital payment transformation. We expect UPI in Nepal would play a pivotal role in transforming the digital economy of the country and dreams of building a less-cash society," said Rajesh Prasad Manandhar, CEO of GPS. Mobile penetration of over 135 per cent, with 65 per cent of the population using smartphones, provides a bedrock for seamless replication of the digital revolution in India to be replicated in Nepal. Over the next few months, all three companies will work closely together to deploy UPI in Nepal. along with all the functionalities and features presently available in India. "We believe this partnership will eliminate all the barriers of payment transformation within Nepal and across the border thereby transforming the regional economy," said Naga Babu Ramineni, Director of Manam.

NPCI to deploy UPI in Nepal, first country outside India

Nepal Earthquake: This is how
the who’s who of Twitteratti reacted to the Nepal Earthquake today

<ul><li>The first earthquake to hit was in the Indian state of <keyword id="46408" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Arunachal-Pradesh">Arunachal Pradesh</keyword> at 1:00am.</li><li>Following which three more earthquakes were felt in Nepal.</li><li>The US Geological Survey predicts ‘low likelihood’ of damages and fatalities. </li></ul>The first earthquake was felt in Aalo, Arunachal Pradesh — in north west India at 1:00am. This was followed by three earthquakes in Nepal in the morning measuring up to 5.2 on the Richter Scale. The first 4.8 tremor was felt at 6:14am in Kathmandu, followed by two tremors in Naubise in Dhading at 6:29am and 6:40am. The intensity of the earthquake in India, however, is disputed. The <keyword id="55209" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-Meteorological-Department">Indian Meteorological Department</keyword> measured it as 5.8 on the Richter Scale but the US Geological Survey (USGS) <a href="https://twitter.com/USGSBigQuakes/status/1120787800641527808">asserts</a> that the magnitude of the earthquake was actually around 6.1. Regardless of the numbers, USGS <a href="https://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/eventpage/us70003axc/executive?utm_medium=social">predicts</a> that there is ‘low likelihood’ of resultant casualties and damages from the quake. Xinhua — China's official state news agency — <a href="http://www.xinhuanet.com/english/2019-04/24/c_138004455.htm">reported</a> that the earthquake in India was also felt in Tibet, one of India’s neighbours. Myanmar and Bhutan, two other countries that share a border with Arunachal Pradesh, have reported any such activity. Four earthquakes hit India and Nepal, no casualties

<keyword id="18568" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="kathmandu">Kathmandu</keyword>, Ahead of signing a major Covid <keyword id="24209" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="vaccine">vaccine</keyword> deal with <keyword id="3658" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="India">India</keyword>, probably on Friday, Nepal's Department of Drug Administration (DDA) has given permission for the <keyword id="9156702" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="emergency-use">emergency use</keyword> of India-made coronavirus vaccine Covishield in the country. Nepal's Foreign Minister Pradeep Gyawali is currently in New Delhi to take part in the sixth meeting of Nepal-India Joint Commission. One of the major agreements that both sides are likely to ink is on cooperation in Covid vaccine manufactured in India. The vaccine, developed by the <keyword id="30725" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Oxford-university">Oxford University</keyword> and Astra-Zeneca and produced by the <keyword id="95879" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Serum-Institute-of-India">Serum Institute of India</keyword>, has been given conditional permission for emergency use, the department said. The DDA had two days ago called for the registration of vaccines to be used for emergency use. This is the first time that any Covid-19 vaccine has been approved for use in Nepal. Other manufacturing countries like China and Russia were also interested in providing vaccines to Nepal but due to climatic conditions, pricing, logistic facility and ease of import, Nepal preferred the Indian Covid vaccine.
