New Delhi, June 16 (IANS) Mobile payments in India initiated by payment apps comprising account-to-account transfers and payments made from stored-value accounts rose 163 per cent to $287 billion in 2019, said a report on Tuesday. By comparison, point-of-sale transactions completed using debit and credit cards, including online and in apps, rose 24 per cent to $204 billion, according to the S&amp;P Global Market Intelligence's 2020 India Mobile Payments Market Report. Card and mobile payments as a percentage of India's GDP rose to 20 per cent in the quarter ended December 31, 2019, the results showed. In fact, card and mobile payments exceeded ATM withdrawals for the first time in 2019, according to the report. "High growth rates in cashless payments seen in recent years are unlikely to repeat amid an economic slowdown due to the novel coronavirus pandemic," Sampath Sharma Nariyanuri, Fintech Analyst at S&amp;P Global Market Intelligence, said in a statement. "However, we expect mobile payments to be more resilient and will gain a bigger lead over card payments, as their uptake will accelerate due to ongoing social distancing measures and concerns over usage of cash and plastic." S&amp;P Global Market Intelligence estimates that card purchases and Unified Payments Interface (UPI) mobile payments represented only 21 per cent of $781 billion in in-store transactions in 2019. Google Pay and PhonePe led UPI payment apps as the two apps handled over seven billion transactions in total, representing more than two-thirds of UPI transactions in 2019. As banks are expected to reduce their exposure to unsecured lending amid the ongoing pandemic, payment apps will have an opportunity to play a mainstream role in providing loans and insurance. Each household watches 5 hours, 11 minutes of television every day and as many as 222 million individuals tune in to primetime television at any given minute. GEC and movies continued to account for 3/4th of TV viewership. This growth in viewership has given an impetus to regional language markets. Share of viewership of channels other than Hindi and the 4 South languages have risen steadily, from 15% in 2016 to 23% in 2019. Viewership of most regional language channels have doubled in the same period. English Language channels have seen a decline in viewership - one reason is that sports content - which was traditionally broadcast largely in English - is increasingly available in Hindi and regional languages. Here, viewership for Hindi language channels have grown by 31% in the last 4 years and contributed to 44% of total TV viewership in 2019 Growth of the news genre 2019 saw a 23% growth in viewing minutes for News Channels over the previous year, with the genre accounting for 8.9% of total television viewing - its highest share over the last four years. 2019 was the year of General Elections, as well as polls to elect 7 State Assemblies. Earlier in the year, there was extensive news coverage of the Pulwama Terror Attack and the aftermath of that, including the Balakot Air Strike, and capture and release of Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman. Later in the year, the triple talaq debate and the abrogation of Article 370 dominated headlines. Beyond political affairs, there were several other developments that drove news viewership in 2019 - severe rains and floods in many parts of the country, Chandrayaan-2, the Ardh Kumbh Mela and ICC World Cup Cricket. These ensured high viewer interest through the year, across the country. The Maharashtra Legislative Assembly elections and the run-up to government formation, Supreme Court decision on Ram Janmabhoomi-Babri Masjid dispute and the controversy around Citizenship Amendment Act also led to successive viewership peaks for the news genre. Impact of NTO On February 1 2019, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI)'s New Tariff Order (NTO) for Broadcasting and Cable Services came into force. The report revealed that the NTO led to a drop in percentage of households that watched 30 channels or more on an average per week, while share of homes that watched 20 channels or less increased. Growth of sports channels In 2019, sports channels saw a growth of 17% (viewing minutes) over 2018. The genre contributed to 3.2% of total TV viewership in 2019 - which was the highest over the last 4 years. Beyond cricket, the most watched sports on TV are Kabaddi, Wrestling and Football. Together, they corner 85% of viewing minutes of non-cricket events. Moreover, in 2019, about 424 million viewers (which is 51% of the total TV viewing population) watched live matches of IPL-12. BARC India's Out of Home Measurement showed that an additional 9% watched the tournament in restaurants, pubs and other such ‘Out of Home’ locations. Urban vs Rural BARC India's BI-2018 Survey estimated that 44% individuals with access to TV live in Urban areas, while 56% are in Rural India. This is an outcome of higher TV penetration in Urban areas, given that television ownership is linked largely to economic status (among other factors like availability of power, cable TV distribution etc.). The Urban and Rural viewer profile has some key differences, which influence the respective character of TV consumption: While Rural India accounts for a higher viewership share than Urban India for GEC and Movies genre, the picture is reversed for the kids genre. In News, the viewership contribution is split evenly between Urban and Rural. Advertising on TV Over the last 4 years, the volume of advertising on TV (FCT) has grown by 21%. In 2019, 11,525 Advertisers ran 76.8 million ads across 634 measured channels that reached out to 197 million homes across India. All leading products and services use TV's huge reach to connect with their target consumers. Of these, FMCG occupies the top slot, accounting for 54% of ad duration in 2019. FMCG and e-Commerce were the two segments that increased their ad volumes on TV in 2019 over the previous year. However, according to Faizani, re-employing people displaced by AI by providing them with a new set of skills will remain a struggle for the new economy, Faizani warned. AI has been used by financial services companies, for example, for credit approvals and for predicting default rates, making the process faster and more accurate. It is also useful in detecting money laundering and the illegal movement of money and goods across the global financial sector. Companies in different sectors including software, engineering, automotive, travel, and hospitality will likely witness a considerable upswing in their hiring numbers next year, the report noted. Nearly 64% of employers in India are expecting a positive trend in hiring whereas 20% of employers believe that they will hire a similar number of people as last year. Nearly half of the companies in India may increase hiring in 2019: Report

According to PwC, the global economy is expected to slow in 2019 as G7 countries return to long-run average growth rates, "The global economy enjoyed a mini-boom between the end of 2016 and early 2018, when growth picked up in most major economies. This phase is now over, and in 2019 we expect the G7 economies to return to growth rates close to their long-run averages," the report said. India is likely to witness an economic growth of 7.6 percent in 2019 whereas UK will settle at 1.6 percent if the country manages to deal with the no-deal Brexit in March. The 20 CMOs to watch in 2019

Mumbai, Dec 24 () India doubled its artificial intelligence (AI) workforce in 2019 following advancement in technology and adoption of business intelligence, yet there are a large number of vacancies across sectors due to talent gap, according to a study.
 The number of AI professionals in India grew to 72,000 in 2019 from 40,000 last year as the number of companies working on AI projects tripled to 3,000 this year from 1,000 in 2018, according to a study on Indian AI industry by ed-tech company Great Learning.
 Large scale adoption of business intelligence, rising AI-based optimisation of enterprise processes, improved data management across organisations and bigger budgetary allocations from the government aided this growth, it added. 
 However, the study found that close to 2,500 positions related to AI continued to remain vacant this year due to lack of talent despite the growth in number of AI professionals. 
 The study is based on a survey among Indian professionals in AI and Machine Learning industry with varying years of experience, ranging from freshers to mid and senior level executives, across sectors.
 According to the study, Indian AI industry's revenue doubled in size to USD 415 million (about Rs 2,950 crore) in 2019 from USD 230 million (about Rs 1,600 crore) in 2018.
 It also revealed that the average work experience of AI professionals in India is 7.2 years, while 29 per cent of AI professionals have more than 10 years of work experience, it said. 
 Further, the number of freshers joining the field has also grown to 6,000 from 3,700 last year, an increase of over 60 per cent, it added.
 "We expect this momentum to continue. Also, the fact that the number of vacancies in AI has again trumped the number of available professionals despite the industry doubling its talent pool shows the huge employment potential that the sector holds for those willing to upskill," Great Learning co-founder Hari Krishnan Nair said.
 "We expect to see a large number of experienced professionals transitioning to careers in AI in 2020 as well," he added.
 Bengaluru emerged as the most popular destination for AI professionals, having created over 23,000 jobs as against 13,000 last year, the study said. 
 It was followed by Delhi (17,000), Mumbai (9,000), Hyderabad (8,000), Pune (7,200) and Chennai (5,800), it added. 
 As far as remuneration is concerned, the median salary package for AI professionals is Rs 14.7 lakh across all experience level and skill sets, it said. 
 AI professionals in Mumbai get the highest salary package at almost Rs 17 lakh per annum, followed by Delhi-NCR at Rs 15.6 lakh, it said, adding that AI professionals in Chennai get the lowest remuneration at Rs 10.8 lakh.
 Almost 39 per cent of AI professionals in India are employed with large-sized companies, 29 per cent with mid-sized organisations and 32 per cent with start-ups, it said, adding that women participation continues to remain low. SM

Samsung to soon launch a new Galaxy Watch with four variants

New Delhi, Jan 16 () Indian companies raised USD 0.34 billion (Rs 2,400 crore) through 12 initial public offers in the fourth quarter of 2019, with the domestic stock exchanges being ranked seventh globally in terms of number of IPOs, according to a report.
Overall in 2019, 62 IPOs came in with total mop up of USD 2.53 billion (Rs 17,899 crore), a decrease of 62 per cent in volume and 54 per cent fall in terms of proceeds, EY India IPO Trends Report: Q4 2019, said on Thursday.
Consumer products and retail sector was the most active with four IPOs, followed by banking and capital markets with three such offers and diversified industrial products with two public offers, it said.
"India recorded 12 IPOs (USD 0.34 billion proceeds) in the fourth quarter of 2019," the report noted.
In the main market, there were four IPOs in Q4 2019 against two and six in Q4 2018 and Q3 2019, respectively, it added.
However, with the cuts in corporate tax rates, corporate earnings are expected to increase, the EY India report said.
"The government has already announced stimulus packages for automobile, real estate, telecom and financial services sectors, which may help companies achieve growth. In addition, there has been an increased inflow from foreign portfolio investors (FPIs)," it added.
In the SME markets, there were eight IPOs in Q4 2019 as against 32 and nine in Q4 2018 and Q3 2019, respectively.
In Q4 2019, SBI Cards and Payment Services filed for an IPO with an issue size of approximately USD 1.3 billion. Filing for such an issue size is a positive indication of investors appetite for new issues in the capital market, the report said.
It further added that other successful filings include - Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation Limited (IRCTC) and CSB Bank.
Sandip Khetan, Partner and National Leader, Financial Accounting Advisory Services (FAAS), EY India said, "We anticipate the IPO market to pick up this year with the government expected to announce measures in the upcoming budget to address the economic slowdown. Overall, markets are expected to remain volatile, and companies and investors who have adopted a 'wait and watch' policy need to be prepared to take the leap of opportunity in 2020".
Globaly, in Q4 2019 there were 353 IPOs with proceeds of USD 84.5 billion, which was 5 per cent lower in deal volume and 53 per cent higher by proceeds compared to Q4 2018. SUM
