<ul><li>The Indian government has drafted a <keyword id="10714457" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="national-strategy-on-blockchain">National Strategy on Blockchain</keyword>.</li><li>This could be the next big step in the <keyword id="3264646" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="India-stack">India Stack</keyword> – an ambitious technology project Indian government embarked upon over 10 years ago.</li><li>If the implementation of UPI was revolutionary, the scale of changes that the addition of <keyword id="6355684" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Blockchain">blockchain</keyword> infrastructure can facilitate will be way, way bigger.</li></ul>Over 10 years ago, the Indian government opened up its database for private players to build products upon it. The combination of Aadhaar ⁠— the world’s largest identity database ⁠— along with the government’s payments infrastructure, riding on the proliferation of mobile phones, allowed millions of Indians to leapfrog into the digital payments era. <div type="image" title="india stack1" msid="80718503" hostid="261"></div> The sheer scale of the ambition and its success in bringing financial inclusion got the Indian government laurels from some of the biggest icons of modern technology, including <keyword id="45830" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bill-Gates">Bill Gates</keyword>, Satya Nadella and <keyword id="164502" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sundar-Pichai">Sundar Pichai</keyword>. And now, India is set to add blockchain infrastructure to that India Stack and the benefits could be way, way bigger than what the unified payments interface (UPI) achieved. According to the draft National Strategy on Blockchain, a government-led blockchain infrastructure can become the hub for private developers to build applications. If the India Stack allowed developers to build payments products, access to blockchain infrastructure can revolutionise products and services across healthcare, cyber security, governance, media, logistics &amp; hospitality, education, legal, energy, smart cities and so on. <div type="image" title="Blockchain" msid="80718512" hostid="261"></div> “Blockchain being a single source of truth can be used for authentication and verification of all the transactions and data, produced by various government departments,” said the draft. The government is currently accepting public opinions on the draft until February 16 through the MyGov platform. Now, what can this technology be used for? The latest draft from The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology has laid out some of its targets. <ul><li>Setting up a national framework for blockchain.</li><li>Architecture options for blockchain including private participation.</li><li>Applications of national interest for blockchain which includes e-voting, land records, pharmaceutical supply, power distribution, identity management among others.</li><li>Build centres of excellence of blockchain technology.</li></ul>The success of the India Stack is fuelling excitement around the ‘India ledger’ By opening up its database securely for private developers, India had done what no other country had. Sundar Pichai, the CEO of Alphabet, which owns the internet giant Google, in an <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/opinion/interviews/if-upi-payments-work-in-india-it-will-work-everywhere-sundar-pichai-ceo-google/articleshow/56341566.cms">interview</a> in 2017 had said that UPI and India Stack conversations get him excited. Pichai, who had then said we will see products being built out of India for a global stage, has since then gone on to commit $10 billion into the country’s technology ecosystem. <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/tech/technology/digital-india-and-india-stack-have-made-the-country-stand-out-satya-nadella/articleshow/79783076.cms?from=mdr">Talking about India Stack</a>, Microsoft founder Bill Gates had said that India is at the “cusp of leapfrogging” whereas his successor Nadella said ,”'Digital India' framework has made India 'stand out' from the rest of the world”. One of the architects of India Stack Nandan Nilekani, the co-founder of Infosys, had called it the “single most important innovation India needs”. Opening up a blockchain infrastructure for similar innovations may lead to bigger advancements in technology than UPI, which is hailed as India’s most successful digital project. “We can create our own massive blockchain ledger, say India Ledger, where all researchers and experts come together. The third is that we need to create our own journey with blockchain. Now, is the time to really work on these thoughts,” said Prasanna Lohar, head of digital innovations at DCB Bank and a blockchain expert who has been privy to the discussions around blockchain with the government. Along with the blockchain strategy, India is toying with the idea of banning private cryptocurrency and instead bringing out its own “digital rupee”. “Niti Aayog, India's think tank has been working on IndiaChain, India's own ambitious project to develop a nationwide blockchain network, which has revolutionized India’s position as one of the emerging technology players. A few months ago, a blockchain project named Vajra designed by the National Payments Corporation of India for various payment companies providing secured transactions on their online platforms or mobile applications, shows the government is taking proactive initiative to support blockchain,” said Neeraj Khandelwal, co-founder of cryptocurrency and bitcoin startup CoinDCX. According to Chandrasekhar, the government is expanding the INDIAai initiative in partnership with homegrown tech companies, startups and academic institutions under a comprehensive AI programme. The Bhashini team at the IT Ministry aims to build a National Public Digital Platform for languages to develop services and products for citizens by leveraging the power of AI and other emerging technologies. It is creating a unifying architecture, underpinned by principles of open data and open source software, to enable contributions from the research initiatives and the ecosystem. Bhashini, the natural language AI platform, "will enable automated language translation", according to Chandrasekhar who had a three decades' long career in the technology domain before making his foray into politics. According to him, India Stack will become more nuanced, intelligent and sophisticated in its next avatar, as more and more enterprises and countries across the world innovate and integrate, execute, and implement digital transformation. "Our mission as a nation is to offer India Stack or the part of the stack to those enterprises and countries across the world who want to innovate and further integrate, execute, and implement digital transformation," said the Minister. India currently ranks first in terms of AI skill penetration and AI talent concentration and fifth in AI scientific publications, a Nasscom report said last month. India's 'AI Skills Penetration Factor' has been reported to be 3.09 -- the highest among all G20 and OECD countries. With Setu, which works like a regulatory sandbox (a testing environment where new or untested software or coding can be run securely), fintech developers would get a chance to test their technology before going live. “Making every company a fintech company - that is the goal. Chennai, Mar 18 (): CoreStack, a Seattle-basedenterprise cloud governance technology startup, on Wednesdayannounced USD 8.5 million Series A financing aimed atstrengthening its research and development centre here.    The Series A Financing round is led by Naya Ventures withparticipation from strategic investors.    The company plans to add 20 more cloud specialists to itsexisting workforce of 64 by year-end, a company statement saidhere.    The fresh financing round would bring CoreStack's totalfunding to USD 13 million, enabling aggressive expansion ofsales and marketing and accelerated product development inarea of single and multi-cloud enterprise governancesolutions.    Naya Ventures Managing Director Dayakar Puskoor alsojoined the the Board of CoreStack following the development. What many people don't know is that Stack Overflow also has paid, premium products, like Teams, Talents, or Ads, meant for corporate buyers. Chandrasekar says that it's his immediate ambition to spread the word on that front - taking the success of the main site, and using it to build out its revenue-generating business products."The exciting part is that I feel like it's a diamond in the rough. We're only scratching the potential of the company," Chandrasekar told Business Insider. "There are only a few companies that are able to bring that level of the community together. It's clearly very prevalent."<a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/stack-overflow-most-influential-people-in-tech-2019-4">Stack Overflow</a> announced Chandrasekar as its new CEO on September 24th, six months after co-founder Joel Spolsky announced he was stepping down from the role and looking for a replacement. With Stack Overflow so firmly established, Chandrasekar says that the company has already solved some of the hard parts with its renewed focus on its business products - the brand is well known, and users already love it. To Chandrasekar, it's the key to not only growing the company, but making its revenue more predictable."It's not any other company trying to make its way," Chandrasekar said. "It already has high impact. There's a tremendous amount of growth possibility."The company has raised a total of $70 million to date, according to PitchBook, from investors including Andreessen Horowitz, Spark Capital, and Bezos Expeditions (Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos' investment fund). To fuel its grand ambitions, Chandrasekar says that <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/programming-languages-in-highest-demand-2016-10">Stack Overflow</a> will likely raise another round of funding next year. "A lot of the growth that the company has generated so far, a lot of that work has been on the hard work and hustle of the team," Chandrasekar said. "That needs to be evolved into a lot more of a machine, a go-to-market engine that's predictable. You need an approach to product market fit."<h2>'All my engineering teams were using it'</h2>Chandrasekar's own roots in technology go back to childhood. He grew up in Bangalore, which is known as the Silicon Valley of India. He says he was always surrounded by developers, and he was introduced to computers early on. When he was 17, Chandrasekar decided he wanted to study in another country. He ended up going to the University of Maine, moving from one of the largest cities in India to a town with a population of 10,000. He then worked in consulting before studying management at Harvard Business School and working on merger and acquisition deals at Barclays.Directly before Stack Overflow, Chandrasekar spent seven years at Rackspace, a cloud computing company based in Texas, where he held several roles and led the group focusing on Amazon Web Services consulting services. During this time, he was first exposed to Stack Overflow, where his teams often used it. "All my engineering teams were using it as the default place for answers to questions," Chandrasekar said. "I looked at it as such a compelling mission and such a high impact mission. The mission and the scope and the scale were what drove me to the company."Chandrasekar heard about the opportunity to lead Stack Overflow through his network. Now, as CEO, Chandrasekar says his goal is to meet all 300 of Stack Overflow employees, known as Stackers, and talk to them about their thoughts on the future of the business. As for Stack Overflow itself, he says his favorite questions are the ones where the community shares their thoughts on the best way to tackle thorny issues like cybersecurity. He also enjoys perusing the Space Exploration page on Stack Exchange, the site's extended network of non-programming-related Q&amp;A sites. "There are fascinating questions about what are the limitations of physics that keep us from going to certain parts of the universe," Chandrasekar said. "You'd be surprised about the level of knowledge our user base carries." <h2>Community is 'very much part of our DNA'</h2>Chandrasekar joined Stack Overflow to scale the business - not just as a forum for developers to ask and answer questions, but also as a serious enterprise services company. Chandrasekar says that while most companies he talks to have "tremendous amount of awareness" of Stack Overflow, they are not aware of Teams, Talents, or Ads. He sees big opportunity for Stack Overflow Talent, which helps companies recruit and hire developers, and Ads, which is its relatively traditional advertising business. He also singles out Teams, which allows companies to functionally build their own versions of Stack Overflow for internal use and share knowledge, as a particularly big opportunity. "The opportunity around Teams is very, very important," Chandrasekar said. "Currently we have literally thousands of companies using this product. Each has tens of thousands of developers using this product. The knowledge and collaboration platform’s free tier will allow up to 50 people to sign on. Users don’t need to offer credit or debit card details in order to sign up for the free plan. Unlike the Stack Overflow question and answer website, Stack Overflow for Teams is a knowledge management software. Using the public platform is free, but Teams was thus far a paid product. Aside from the limitation on users, the free version of Stack Overflow for Teams has most of the features that are offered in the paid tiers as well. This includes integration with team collaboration apps like Slack and Microsoft Teams. Community, brand and product approach According to Chandrasekar, companies usually think about their product first and then their brand. Communities are the last run on the ladder, which most tend to ignore. And, this strategy has worked just fine for the 12-year old American startup created by Jeff Atwood and Joel Spolsky. “All of this is fueled by the remote world environment,” Chandrasekar told Business Insider. The company started as a community — a messaging forum, really — then built itself into a brand and now has a product to offer — Teams. The explosion of work-from-home during the COVID-19 pandemic seems to have helped the startup.
