"Deeply concerning that #India has blocked the flow of information to Indian Twitter by withholding access to the following official accounts," Geo News quoted the Ministry as saying in a tweet on Monday night, while listing down the banned accounts. The banned accounts include accounts of the Pakistani Embassy in UN, Turkey, Iran and Egypt. "Diminishing space for plurality of voices &amp; access to info in India is extremely alarming," the tweet added. The Ministry called out Twitter, saying that social media platforms should abide by the applicable international norms. It said that the government of Pakistan is urging the tech company to restore access to the restricted accounts immediately and ensure adherence to democratic freedoms of speech and expression. Meanwhile, the Twitter handles of journalists, including The News and Geo News reporter in London, <keyword id="14309060" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="murtaza-ali-shah" source="Orion">Murtaza Ali Shah</keyword> and CJ Werleman have also been withheld by the company under India's Information Technology Act, 2000, Geo News reported. Murtaza Ali Shah has around 550,000 followers on his verified Twitter @MurtazaViews account. He has been associated with The News and Geo for more than 17 years. Shah confirmed he received an email notice from Twitter about India's legal action against his account. Twitter India bans accounts of Pakistan embassies in UN, Iran, Egypt and Turkey

Prime Minister <keyword id="6354477" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Narendra-Modi">Narendra Modi</keyword> on Monday told the United Nations that Indias policy on climate change action has been guided by the principle of "need, not greed", and that New Delhi is looking to increase its renewable energy target to 450 GW from the present 175 GW by 2022. The Prime Minister, while addressing the high-level Climate Action Summit hosted by UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres in the UN General Assembly chamber here, also said that not enough is being done to combat climate change and that a world-wide "jan andolan" (mass movement) on behavioural change is required to tackle the issue. "Need, not greed, has been our guiding principle, and that is why India has not come only to speak but with a roadmap on combating climate change. We believe that an ounce of practice is worth more than a tonne of preaching," Modi said while addressing the gathering in Hindi. He said that India is also looking to take forward its capacity in non-fossil fuel, which stands at 175 GW at present, to 450 GW by 2022. He said that on this year's Independence Day (August 15), India had called for a "jan andolan" for freedom from single use plastic. "We hope that this will raise awareness against the usage of single use plastic," he said. "Not enough is being done to combat climate change. We need a comprehensive approach through education, values, life style approach and behavioural change, which should be turned into a mass movement," he said. "We believe that an ounce of practice is worth more than a tonne of preaching," Modi added. The Prime Minister said that in India, e-mobility and bio fuel mixture in petrol are being encouraged, while clean cooking gas has been provided to 150 million families. He also said that water conservation and rain water harvesting have begun in India under the Mission Jal Jeevan. "We are going to spend $50 billion on this in the next few years," he said. Modi said that 80 countries are part of the International Solar Alliance. "I am happy that India and Sweden, along with other parties, are launching the Industry Transition Tract leadership group. This is for creating low carbon pathways for industries," Modi said. Stating that a Coalition for Disaster Resistant Infrastructure is being initiated, Modi said, "I urge all the countries to join in." He also said that India will inaugurate solar panels in the UN General Assembly. "The time for talking is over, the world needs to act now," he said.

India to raise non-fossil fuel target to 450 GW: PM Modi

Biofuel can be produced from crops, garbage left-overs, and crop-residue. The production of biofuel can transform the quality of people’s lives both in the rural and urban regions. Increasing the use of biofuels can help increase the income of the farmers, create new avenues for employment, protect the nation’s wealth and also contribute to a greener environment. PM visualizes the move towards biofuel as a measure to empower the villages, promote cleanliness, pave the way to modern urban development, reduce air pollution in the cities, and support a plethora of green initiatives. Indian government and biofuel initiatives Efforts to produce ethanol from sugarcane started during Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s governance. However, since the project was launched by the previous government, the scheme was not given the right momentum. After the BJP government took charge of the central government after the 2014 elections, the ethanol blending program was initiated and the scheme operates today in more than 25 states and union territories of India. This project not only helped farmers but also saved about Rs. 4000 crores in foreign exchange. All about green fuels Other than sugarcane, the other sources to produce biofuels include spoiled crops, bamboo, grass, crop residue, cow dung, recycled edible oil, crop stubble, solid waste, and many others. The government initiatives to produce bio-diesel from the used cooking oil discarded in households, commercial kitchens, restaurants and other food processing plants can be used to produce bio-diesel that can make a cleaner, renewable and cheaper fuel. The government has recently announced that the state-run marketing companies will produce bio-diesel from the used edible oil. Bio-diesel can be mixed with any type of diesel. It is non-toxic and bio-degradable. The government’s initiatives in the lines of bio-diesel is a measure to decrease our dependence on oil imports and find alternative sources of greener fuels.

India, the endorsed candidate from the Asia-Pacific States, won 184 votes out of the 192 ballots cast in the elections for the five non-permanent seats of the Security Council. During the address, Modi will be joined by Norwegian Prime Minister Erna Solberg. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres will also address the segment. The theme of this year's High-Level Segment is 'Multilateralism after COVID19: What kind of UN do we need at the 75th anniversary'. Held on an annual basis, the High-level Segment represents the culmination of the ECOSOC's annual cycle of work and convenes a diverse group of high-level representatives from Government, the private sector, civil society and academia. "Against the backdrop of a changing international environment and the unfolding COVID-19 pandemic, the session will focus on critical forces shaping the course of multilateralism and explore ways to bolster the multilateral agenda through strong multilateral leadership, effective international institutions, a broadening of participation and an enhanced focus on global public goods," the Permanent Mission of India to the UN said in a statement. The event, being held on the eve of the 75th Anniversary of the founding of the UN, assumes special significance as it will be the first opportunity for Modi to address the broader UN membership since India overwhelmingly won the Security Council election on June 17. This year's theme also resonates with India's priority for its Security Council tenure in which New Delhi has called for reformed multilateralism in a post-COVID-19 world. Modi had earlier delivered the keynote address virtually at the 70th anniversary of the ECOSOC in January 2016. India has had a long tradition of close association with the ECOSOC. The inaugural Presidency of the ECOSOC in 1946 was held by Sir Ramaswami Mudaliar of India. "Violence against women and girls is the most pervasive human rights violation in the world. Every 11 minutes, a woman or a girl is killed by an intimate partner or family member - and we know that other stresses, from the COVID-19 pandemic to economic turmoil, inevitably lead to even more physical and verbal abuse," Guterres said. Guterres' remarks come in the backdrop of the recent <keyword id="15514202" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="shraddha-walker" source="Orion">Shraddha Walker</keyword> murder case that has shocked India with its brutal details. He said women and girls also face rampant online violence, from misogynistic hate speech to sexual harassment, image abuse and grooming by predators. "This discrimination, violence and abuse targeting half of humanity come at a steep cost. It limits women's and girls' participation in all walks of life, denies their basic rights and freedoms, and blocks the equal economic recovery and sustainable growth our world needs," he said. The UN chief gave a clarion call to all to "consign violence against women and girls to the history books," saying now is the time for transformative action that ends violence against women and girls. He said this means governments designing, funding and implementing national action plans to tackle this scourge, involving grass-roots and civil society groups at every stage of decision-making and ensuring that laws are implemented and respected, so survivors see their rights to justice and support upheld. Calling on governments to increase funding by 50 per cent to women's rights organisations and movements by 2026, Guterres urged all to take a "stand and raise our voices in support of women's rights" and proudly declare that "we are all feminists." He called for supporting public campaigns that challenge patriarchal norms and promote different forms of masculinities that reject misogyny and violence. Noting that this year's theme on an international day is 'UNITE: Activism to End Violence Against Women and Girls', Guterres said it means standing with activists around the world who are calling for change and supporting survivors of violence. "We would like to recall that restrictions to freedom of expression must never be invoked as a justification for the muzzling of any advocacy of multiparty democracy, democratic tenets and human rights," the report said. The report said as a global leader in technology innovation, India has the potential to develop a legislation that can place it at the forefront of efforts to protect digital rights. However, the substantially broadened scope of the Rules is likely to do just the opposite. "We would therefore encourage the Government to take all necessary steps to carry out a detailed review of the Rules and to consult with all relevant stakeholders, including civil society dealing with human rights, freedom of expression, privacy rights and digital rights", the report said. "We understand the new Rules were issued under the Information Technology Act of 2000 and therefore, were not subject to parliamentary review or opened for consultation with stakeholders. We believe such consultations with relevant stakeholders are essential in order to ensure the final text is compatible with India's international legal obligations, in particular with Articles 17 and 19 of the ICCPR," it added. This observation along with India's comment will also subsequently be made available in the usual report to be presented to the Human Rights Council, it added. A UN report says India's new IT rules do not conform with international human rights norms

Modi tells the UN that it must fix outdated structures because its facing a crisis of confidence

Pakistan Prime Minister <keyword id="6576" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Nawaz-Sharif">Nawaz Sharif</keyword> made yet another attempt to bring the Kashmir issue on the world stage and moved the United Nations to resolve the over two decade old conflict between the two nuclear-armed nations. 
 During his speech at the <keyword id="426867" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="United-Nations-General-Assembly">United Nations General Assembly</keyword>, Sharif said Pakistan was making all attempts and even “going an extra mile” to resolve all the issues with India. 
 “India has posed unacceptable preconditions to engage in a dialogue. Let us be clear: talks are no favor to Pakistan. Talks are in the interest of both countries. They are essential to resolve our differences, especially the Jammu and Kashmir dispute, and to avert the danger of any escalation,” Sharif said during the <keyword id="429560" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="UNGA">UNGA</keyword>. 
 Sharif also raked up the <keyword id="2931728" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Burhan-Wani">Burhan Wani</keyword> issue and said he was a young leader murdered by Indian forces. 
 
“This indigenous uprising of the Kashmiris has been met, as usual, with brutal repression by India’s occupation force of over half a million soldiers. Over a hundred Kashmiris have been killed, hundreds, including children and infants, blinded by shotgun pellets and over six thousand unarmed civilians injured over the past two months,” he said. 
 
On the other hand, India was swift enough to take on Sharif’s tall claims and gave befitting replies to each of his statements made at the world diaspora

"When the international community is going all out to fight Covid-19, the US is spreading political virus. When the international community needs solidarity and cooperation the most, the US is abusing the platform of the United Nations to provoke confrontation and create division. "When the international community needs a strong UN, the US is weakening the United Nations, <keyword id="3169687" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="the-World-Health-Organization">the World Health Organization</keyword> (WHO) and other UN bodies, and undermining the authority and effectiveness of the UN," Zhang said on Tuesday. "In the past two days, more than 120 leaders, president of the General Assembly, and secretary-general of the United Nations made statements in the august hall of the General Assembly. Overwhelming majority of countries called for efforts to uphold multilateralism, strengthen solidarity and cooperation, and jointly tackle global challenges," he said. This is unequivocal rejection of unilateralism and bullying practices, which represents the consensus of the international community and the wish of people across the world, Zhang added. "Lies repeated a thousand times are still lies. US accusations against China are completely baseless and cannot fool anyone," said the envoy. "China was the first to be hit by the outbreak of Covid-19. China made great efforts and enormous sacrifice in response, and managed to bring the situation under control within a short period of time. China, with an open, transparent, and responsible attitude, has been giving updates and sharing experience with the WHO and other countries from the very beginning and providing active assistance to many countries, including the US," Zhang said. Noting China's contribution to the fight against the pandemic is highly recognized and commended by the international community, Zhang said what is happening in the US is a "complete failure". "The US, with the most advanced medical technology and medical system in the world, has more confirmed cases and lost lives than any other country. While other countries that were hit by Covid-19 the same time as the United States have effectively contained the virus, the situation in the US remains unabated. The reason is a thought-provoking one," said the envoy. In terms of combating climate change and protecting the environment, Zhang said that "China's carbon dioxide emission in 2018 was 45.8 per cent lower than 2005, meeting the emission reduction target two years ahead of schedule." "President Xi announced during his speech that China aims to have CO2 emissions peak before 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality before 2060, demonstrating China's strong resolve and commitment and setting a role model for others," Zhang said. China has earnestly fulfilled its obligations under the Basel Convention, and made positive contributions to global environmental governance, the envoy said. "In contrast, the US, as the country with the largest cumulative emissions of greenhouse gases in the world, hasn't ratified the <keyword id="48961" type="TECHNOLOGY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Kyoto-Protocol">Kyoto Protocol</keyword> and has pulled out of the <keyword id="3087299" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Paris-agreement">Paris Agreement</keyword>. It has also dissociated itself from the global system and arrangement of carbon emissions, seriously hindered the global process of emission reduction and green development," said Zhang. "At the same time, as the world's largest exporter of solid waste and a major country of per capita plastic consumption, the US refuses to ratify the Basel Convention and has transferred a lot of waste to developing countries. It is clear who wilfully disregards the global environment and the health of people around the world," said the envoy. Unilateralism, Zhang said, runs against the common views and interests of the international community. "It is a dead end and leading nowhere. The US provocation of confrontation at the United Nations for its own interests is unpopular and doomed to fail. For the US, the most urgent task is to contain the virus, save lives, and fix its own problems. Some US politicians' attempt of blame-shifting and scapegoating will not get back the time lost or solve any problem. It is time that they wake up from their self-created illusions and fictions," said the envoy.
