 The Mastermind The firebrand activist and Arya Samaji Bismil was the mastermind behind the famous Kakori Conspiracy. He and his band looted the British government treasury from the Saharanpur-Lucknow Passenger Train on August 9, 1925. A detailed account of this event was published in Bismil’s autobiography, ‘Kakori ke Saheed’ (The Martyrs of Kakori), which was published by Ganesh Shanker Vidyarth in 1928. Eventually, Bismil was convicted for involvement in the robbery, and hanged along with others on December 19, 1927 in Gorakhpur in UP. This hero who attained a cult status, had planned many such Robin Hood-like expeditions. One such is the Mainpuri Conspiracy where he planned to raise funds for his revolutionary organisation Matrivedi, by robbing from various locations. Bismil also had an artistic side as published a collection of his poems ‘Man ki Lehar’ (A Sally of mInd) and ‘Swadeshi Rang’ (Colours of Freedom).

The most famous book on Indian independence 'Freedom at midnight' to be made into a web series

In a small town called <keyword id="2648" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Anand">Anand</keyword> in western India in 1946 farmers were having a difficult time having to deal with the exploitative trade practices followed by the local trade cartel. Refusing to be cowed down by the cartel, farmers of this area went on a milk strike. And they approached the great Indian patriot Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel for a solution. His advice was natural, start a cooperative movement. 
 
And they did. 
 
Inspired by India’s freedom struggle, it all began when farmers in a small town near Anand city in Gujarat made milk as a symbol of protest. Tribhuvandas Patel was a local leader who had been imprisoned number of times during India’s struggle for freedom. With the help of his supporters, he found a dairy co-operative in 1946 in Anand. The cooperative movement was a movement against the atrocities of Polson Dairy, a locally-owned dairy in Anand, which procured milk from farmers at very low rates to sell to the Bombay (now Mumbai) government. 
 28 year old Mechanical Engineer from Kerala, <keyword id="168701" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Verghese-Kurien">Verghese Kurien</keyword> arrived in Anand in 1949 as a government employee to manage a dairy. Fed up with his monotonous and unchallenging job he had already made up his mind to leave but upon Tribhuvandas Patel’s request he agreed to stay back for few months to oversee installation of the newly ordered machineries. No one then knew that Dr. Kurien would never leave Anand and make it the milk capital of India. In 1955 <keyword id="26280" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="amul">Amul</keyword> (then short for Anand Milk Union Ltd) was born. Verghese Kurien was in almost every way the architect of Amul. He went from helping farmers repair their machinery to revolutionising the Indian dairy industry by scripting Operation Flood, a cooperative movement that turned India from a net importer of milk into one of the world’s largest producers. Not for nothing was Dr. Verghese Kurien called the Milkman of India. 
 
The first dairy, Kaira District Co-operative Milk Producers’ Union, which created Amul in 1955, handed over the brand name to Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF) in 1973. Thus, in 1973 the GCMMF was established to market milk and milk products manufactured by six district cooperative unions of Gujarat. 
 
 
 Branding played a major role for Amul’s success, the (original) Amul Girl was created by <keyword id="245066" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sylvester-daCunha">Sylvester daCunha</keyword> (daCunha Communications) to counter the Polson dairy girl. Polson’s sexy village belle didn’t stand a chance to the tubby little moppet in the polka-dotted dress and a matching ribbon. Amul ads were cleverly designed to add a tinge of nationalism to an essentially rural revolution. The first Amul Ad campaign came in 1967 in Bombay (now Mumbai). And the response was phenomenal... and continues to be. Amul is also credited with a Guinness world record for longest running ad campaign of the world for its Utterly Butterly girl portraying day-to-day issues since 1967. In 1977, the Amul story was showcased through a Hindi movie titled Manthan directed by Shyam Benegal starring Naseeruddin Shah, Girish Karnad, Smita Patil and Amrish Puri which also won National award for best film. The movie again demonstrated the power of collective might as the movie was financed by a contribution of Rs. 2 by 5 lakh farmers. 
 
And then, Amul became a brandname in its own right. It is said that for Operation Flood, Kurien’s idea of having farmers own the brand went a long way in creating a sense of ownership and, in turn, responsibility for the product’s quality. Since the mid-90s, Amul has been able to take the range outside the security of traditional products, milk powder and butter. Amul diversified to everything from ice-cream, curd to long-life flavoured milk. Brand Amul is now present in over 50 countries.

Google tour will also take you to majestic Aga Khan Palace built in 1892, which served as a prison for iconic peace icon <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=mahatma+gandhi">Mahatma Gandhi</a> and his wife Kasturba Gandhi from 1942. 
 
You will be part of the historic Dandi march-also known as the Salt Satyagraha, too that happened in March 1930.

Be it Cellular Jail in Port Blair or Jallianwala Bagh in Amritsar, you will sneak into the hardships experienced by the freedom fighters during their struggle for India’s Independence. 
 
It will also include special collection of images and artefacts from the Nehru Memorial Museum and Library, Lahori Gate, Mughal Citadel, etc.

Born on the countryside of Gujarat, and raised during the time when British had occupied most parts of India, <keyword id="1966902" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sardar-Vallabhabhai-Patel">Sardar Vallabhabhai Patel</keyword> went on to become the unifier of India that was on the brink of falling apart while almost closing in on independence. 
 The country was vast, and mostly in shambles with the objective of <keyword id="386899" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="freedom-struggle">freedom struggle</keyword> that seemed to have been achieved with British leaving India. But the problems remained. Partition was a lot more gory and painful than what the leaders had imagined. On the other hand, within whatever remained as ‘India’ the feeling of solidarity was rather hazy because the status of ‘republic’ was still far away from being attained. States were excited about freedom, but anxious about what lie ahead of them. 
 
Only few leaders played a prominent role during this time. The barrister turned organiser and a leader with steely spine, Sardar Vallabhabhai Patel was the person who withstood the challenges of time, and managed them like the challenges were what make the fruits of labour sweeter. 
 
In fact, the name ‘Sardar’ was given to him, owing to the fact that he had always displayed amazing organisational and leadership skills. He was a leader who was loved by everyone, and even those who hated him, would grudgingly acknowledge the fact that he was a born leader. 
 The current generation, which trains in B-schools to pick up leadership skills and lessons in management, could well study a personality like <keyword id="24098" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="sardar-patel">Sardar Patel</keyword> to understand the importance of staying a thorough leader. He was a rare kind, the only kind and probably will remain so, unchallenged. 
 ‘<keyword id="6414070" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="20" keywordseo="iron-man">Iron man</keyword> of India’ was what he has been recorded as, through the pages of history. There must be hardly any other leader who was bestowed with meaningful titles from the followers who stood steadfast and strong with their leader. 
 
Here are a few qualities that made him the leader he turned out to be. The one history could never forget, and never stop admiring. 
 
1. Take initiative 
Patel took on himself the task of unifying the states that were torn in different directions under the rule of kings. He had known this was what undid the India that existed before the British took over. Well into the course of struggle for independence, he worked towards this single goal and even after India was free from the British rule, the goal was almost half achieved. But the other half was more challenging than before since it involved having constant dialogue with the stakeholders. Sounds like a typical management challenge? Well, it was and he excelled at it. 
 
2. A true leader 
Though history says Sardar Vallabhabhai Patel had shown great leadership qualities right through his childhood, it would be important to note it was more a personality type than a quality alone. He was someone who was a born leader and clearly identified the traits within himself. He marched the path that his mind showed with clarity and did so fearlessly. A leader is the one who knows how to deal with his confusions. 
 
3. Cross roads excite leaders 
Normal people with basic intelligence get flustered when there is a cross road at any juncture. But, a leader sees these things as an opportunity to choose between two things. Hard thinking coupled with increased clarity on objectives and vision, a cross road is a clear decision of what need to be prioritised over something else. 
 
4. Goal setting 
Unification of the India that was left after partition was a mammoth task. It was no cake walk, but ‘Sardar’ Patel was a born leader who had set this goal and worked towards it relentlessly. He knew once the British left India, the rest of the country had to stand together in solidarity. This could be a crucial lesson for leaders who manage companies through crisis and management of the same. No matter what the challenges are, a goal is what needs to be achieved without blaming situations that threaten the very premise. 
 
5. Stand with people 
While working towards his goal, Patel was with people and not away from them. While he could have a dialogue with Nehru, Jinnah and Gandhiji, he could also communicate with clarity with people who worked at grassroots level as well with equal ease and empathy. Standing with employees even as dialogues with higher stake holders are in progress can set a real leader with vision and goal, apart from ordinary people who would wish to stay away from complicated situations. 
 
6. Sagacity 
What are the important challenges for a leader? Sagacity and integrity being two of them, it is important not to lose sight of the bigger picture. Even when things head on a different direction, staying on the course and working through challenges will only help the person who is at the helm of things. Using shrewdness is a virtue, but make sure it doesn’t threaten to tear the goal apart. Important lesson: bring on the shrewdness, not the ego, into the picture and stay with it. 
 
7. Looking through intricate details 
Intricate details of working towards the set goal can be daunting and tiring. But, that’s what ordinary people experience, and not a leader. Looking through intricate details can help a leader root out smaller problems, and keep everyone together in a situation which is difficult and challenging. Companies wading through difficult waters need leaders who are not just strong, but also lead the way with their own examples. 
 
8. Diplomacy 
Though he was known as a man of iron will and spine; Sardar Patel also often employed diplomacy to keep the dialogue on and never closed the doors of discussion. This was an exclusive role he found and fit himself into, where the other leaders claimed helplessness. A unified India was his gift to the generations ahead.

At a time when country’s free Internet is under attack and the telecom operators are willing to implement new strategies to earn more profit, political parties have come together in support of <keyword id="6391709" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="Net-neutrality">Net Neutrality</keyword> in India. Net Neutrality or democratic internet plans for all under the sun has made possible the impossible. There has been only one instance when political parties had joined together to protest – that was almost 70 years before in India’s freedom struggle against the British rule. 
 A news report by The Economic Times said, political parties have joined the pitch for Internet freedom. "<keyword id="1575" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Congress">Congress</keyword> completely supports net neutrality, Internet freedom must not be compromised," said Congress leader Ajay Maken. 
 
"If ISPs control where you should shop from, then consumers will be powerless," Maken slammed. 
 The government has also backed an open Internet. Telecom Minister <keyword id="8748" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Ravi-Shankar">Ravi Shankar</keyword> Prasad has said the common man should be able to access it without discrimination and declared that the final decision on the controversial net neutrality issue will be taken by the telecom department and not the regulator. 
A six-member panel set up by telecom department will submit its recommendations next month, following which a final view will be taken on Net Neutrality, the principle that guarantees consumers equal and non-discriminatory access to all data, apps and services on the Internet. 
 Meanwhile, after the significant backlash that it faced, online retailer Flipkart on Tuesday withdrew from the controversial <keyword id="15491" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Airtel">Airtel</keyword> Zero plan. "We think equal access to Internet is important for healthy growth of internet services in India. We have realised that Airtel Zero could go against net neutrality," Flipkart said. 
 
"We will be internally discussing details of actions over the next few days. We have a deeper understanding of the implications of zero rating," Flipkart said on social media. "We are committed to the larger cause of Net Neutrality," Flipkart said in a statement. 
 
On its part Airtel, who pioneered the move with introduction of Airtel Zero said that it believes in the concept of Net Neutrality. "We have always supported net neutrality. The Internet is open and we believe it should be non-discriminatory. It should be transparent and open and completely support net neutrality as a concept," Gopal Vittal, CEO of Airtel India told the ET. 
 
Asked whether Airtel is planning to withdraw the product, Vittal said, "We stand committed to the product. We are disappointed by the kind of criticism on the product. This cannot be a conversation on rich versus the poor.

The adoption of <keyword id="50691" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="digital" source="Orion">digital</keyword> radio technology can help the broadcast sector double its revenues to Rs 12,300 crore in five years riding on a robust mobile ecosystem, a new report showed on Thursday. The country has so far tested two technologies -- <keyword id="14635242" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="hd-radio-and" source="Orion">HD Radio and</keyword> <keyword id="10330418" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="digital-radio-mondiale" source="Orion">Digital Radio Mondiale</keyword> (DRM) -- for digital broadcasting in FM bands. According to a report by the <keyword id="7825659" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="india-cellular-and-electronics-association" source="Orion">India Cellular and Electronics Association</keyword> (ICEA) and EY, radio stations will go up from less than 300 today to over 1,100 without additional spectrum and mass adoption cannot happen without the support of a mobile ecosystem. "Digital broadcast radio has the ability to cater to segments of entry-level smartphones and several hundred million feature phone users to receive enhanced services in areas of health, education, emergency and weather which by complementing data networks decongest them," said Pankaj Mohindroo, Chairman, ICEA. "Communication usage with internet of things (IoT) devices are next steps envisaged in the pipeline too," he added. Digital radio broadcasting can be extremely beneficial for all the stakeholders in the sector -- broadcasters, listeners, advertisers and the regulators -- and can help the FM radio segment boost revenues. This comes at a time when the FM radio segment has been struggling to generate robust revenues over the past few years. "It would lead to more advertising inventory to sell with the ability to charge higher rates based on segmented audiences. Given that the digital radio system can provide listenership data, broadcasters can build trust and eventually grow revenues," the report noted. Cost optimisation is another major factor of these technologies for the broadcasters as their transmitters use significantly less power as compared to analogue radio transmitters, it added. "Digital radio can provide a much-needed boost to the <keyword id="3658" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="india" source="Orion">India</keyword>n radio segment. It can help grow the radio segment in India by 3x over 5 years," said <keyword id="263905" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="ashish-pherwani" source="Orion">Ashish Pherwani</keyword>, Partner, EY LLP (India). Around 4 times more channels are possible within the same frequency which can provide more options to listeners. Further, the technology is broadcast-centric, and consumers would not have to pay any data charges, said the report. The report recommended innovations around cost-effective chipsets, antennas and software to drive quicker adoption of digital radio.
