<ul><li>A team of researchers at <keyword id="127671" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Columbia-University">Columbia University</keyword> has found over 300 popular Android apps with crypto bugs. </li><li>Crypto bugs are coding flaws that occur when developers don't follow basic cryptography rules leaving the user and this device vulnerable to exploitation attempts. </li><li>The research team conducted its analysis across 1,780 Android apps across 33 different categories in the Google Play Store but did not share the list of vulnerable apps since the developers have not fixed the security flaws yet.</li></ul>Crypto bugs can put mobile app users and their devices at risk. Cryptography rules are basic guidelines that should be followed while coding. Yet, over 300 Android apps were spotted misusing cryptographic code using a new tool called ‘CRYLOGGER’ developed by a team of researchers at <a href="https://www.computer.org/csdl/proceedings-article/sp/2021/893400a160/1mbmHwIxTb2">Columbia University</a>. Their analysis of 1,780 Android apps across 33 different Google Play Store categories showed that 306 popular apps were flouting at least one of 26 basic cryptography rules. “Unfortunately, only 18 developers answered our first email of request and only eight of them followed back with us multiple times providing useful feedback on our findings,” said the <a href="https://www.computer.org/csdl/pds/api/csdl/proceedings/download-article/1mbmHwIxTb2/pdf">report</a> explaining that the researchers reached out to all the apps with more than nine rule violations. The apps surveyed have at least hundreds of thousands of downloads, with some crossing the 100 million threshold. What are crypto bugs? Crypto bugs or flaws occur when mobile app developers don’t follow the basic rules of coding. The penalties could reach as high as 20 crore rupees, equivalent to about $2.6 million dollars.As lawmakers hammer out India's regulatory approach to cryptocurrencies, its central bank is planning to test a "digital rupee" in the next few months. That central bank <keyword id="12086982" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="digital-currency" source="Orion">digital currency</keyword>, or CBDC, won't be covered by the proposed measures, according to NDTV.The cabinet note quashed any hope that a private cryptocurrency will be recognized as legal tender in India.

<ul><li>The <keyword id="6354335" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="reserve-bank-of-india">Reserve Bank of India</keyword> has banned regulated institutions from dealing with crypto exchanges.</li><li>The <keyword id="30067" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="RBI">RBI</keyword>'s decision will come into effect in three months from now.</li><li>The move could effectively ban cryptocurrency in India.</li></ul>When online poker first flourished in India, many players couldn't transfer money from their poker accounts to their bank accounts. This, basically meant that win or lose, they could make no liquid cash from playing Poker online. The solution? Players decided to transfer the money amongst themselves within the poker sites. So, if you transferred $300 to my account on website A, I could transfer $300 from my bank to yours. The rationale being, that I was going to put in $300 in my poker account anyway. That can't happen with cryptocurrencies anymore. The RBI today banned regulated institutions from dealing with crypto exchanges. The rule comes into effect three months from now, which is the time these institutions have to get their affairs in order. The move doesn't ban crypto usage in India, but it's almost like a demonetisation of cryptocurrency. Three months hence, you won't be able to perform NEFT, UPI or other transactions with crypto apps and websites, like Unocoin, Zebpay and more. This is two-way, meaning you can neither deposit nor withdraw from such apps and websites. But India also isn't a stranger to cryptocurrency usage. Many have invested in modes like <keyword id="6354947" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="bitcoin">Bitcoin</keyword>, Ethereum etc. In fact, a Bitcoin <a href="https://www.businesstoday.in/current/corporate/cryptocurrency-guru-arrested-for-bitcoin-ponzi-schemes-scam-could-run-into-rs-13000-crore/story/274255.html" data-type="tilCustomLink">entrepreneur</a> was recently arrested for scamming investors out of ₹2000 crore (just over $30 million). Will they just lose all these investments? Well, they obviously have three months to transfer these earnings to banks, converting them to cash and hence paying tax. Or, crypto exchanges could just start considering cold hard cash. That should work, at least as long as Demonetisation 2 doesn't happen. For best results, when you want your cryptocurrencies to be exchanged for real money, exchanges will have to deliver cash to you. And if you think this is an impossible scenario, there's a case study already available. Human Cash Haulers An <a href="https://www.fastcompany.com/3067778/the-blockchain-is-going-to-save-immigrants-millions-in-remittance-fees">app called Abra</a> employs "human tellers" to transfer money across the world, using the crypto medium. Unlike crypto exchanges, <keyword id="3110208" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Abra">Abra</keyword> operates like a regular e-wallet. Users load cash onto their wallets, which they can transfer to others. Abra, in turn, converts the money to cryptocurrency and uses the blockchain to transfer it across the world, or just a few metres away. The receiver has to find a human teller near him, which can be an individual or business, and take the amount in local currency. Think of them as Crypto Angadias - the traditional Indian community of human couriers from <keyword id="6354766" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Gujarat">Gujarat</keyword> who haul cash for the diamond and gold industry in the state by operating furtively between Mumbai and Gujarat. It is said that Angadias carry a few hundred crore rupees worth of high-value goods and cash between Mumbai and Gujarat everyday. For a cash-rich country like India, could this be a solution to continue crypto usage within our borders. RBI wants its own cryptocurrency Interestingly, while the government seems keen to ban cryptocurrencies, the RBI doesn't seem to have given up on the idea of floating one of its own. The apex bank has set up a panel to implement India's own fiat cryptocurrency, that's regulated and dispersed by banks. While that may break the core philosophy of crypto modes like Bitcoin, i.e, democratising currencies, it could help reduce the cost of printing bills. It would also be in line with the government's push to promote digital payments in the country. While the RBI's ruling may have effectively banned the use of cryptocurrencies in India, the country doesn't seem ready to give up on it yet.

<ul><li><keyword id="6354616" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Twitter">Twitter</keyword> has named <keyword id="1109299" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Vinay-Prakash">Vinay Prakash</keyword> as its Resident Grievance Officer for India, according to the company's website.</li><li>Twitter had previously appointed Dharmendra Chatur as its interim resident grievance officer for India as required by the IT rules.</li><li>The social-networking app has been at loggerheads with the Indian government over the new social media rules.</li></ul>Twitter has named Vinay Prakash as its Resident Grievance Officer for India, according to the company's website. The US-based company has been in the eye of a storm over its alleged failure to comply with the new IT rules in India, which mandates, among other requirements, the appointment of three key personnel -- chief compliance officer, nodal officer and grievance officer by social media platforms with over 50 lakh users. All the three personnel have to be residents in India. As per the information updated on Twitter's website, Vinay Prakash is the Resident Grievance Officer (RGO). Users can contact him using an email ID listed on the page. "Twitter can be contacted in India at the following address: 4th Floor, The Estate, 121 Dickenson Road, Bangalore 560 042," the page further said. Prakash's name appears along with Jeremy Kessel, who is the <keyword id="11613995" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="global-legal-policy-director">Global Legal Policy Director</keyword>, and is based in the US. The company has also published its compliance report for the period of May 26, 2021, to June 25, 2021. This was another key requirement under the IT rules that came into effect on May 26. Twitter had previously appointed Dharmendra Chatur as its interim resident grievance officer for India as required by the IT rules. However, Chatur stepped down last month. Twitter has been at loggerheads with the Indian government over the new social media rules. The government has confronted Twitter over deliberate defiance and failure to comply with the country's new IT rules, despite repeated reminders. Twitter -- which has an estimated 1.75 crore users in India -- lost its legal shield as an intermediary in India, becoming liable for users posting any unlawful content. On July 8, Twitter had informed the <keyword id="6355014" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="delhi-high-court">Delhi High Court</keyword> that it has appointed an interim chief compliance officer, who is a resident of India, and that it will make an endeavour to fill the regular position within eight weeks as per the new IT Rules. It had also said it was in the process of making an appointment to an Indian resident as its interim RGO and it expected to do so on or before July 11 and details would be updated on its 'Help Page' as soon as possible.
