The letter cited the government's GR on serving rice pudding to children four times a week under the Pradhan Mantri Poshan Shakti Nirman Yojana (formerly known as midday meal scheme). "The GR mentions that 25 grams of sugar be added to the meals of students from Class I to V and 45 grams for students from Class VI to VIII," the letter said. "We need 25 grams of sugar per day. There are two types of sugar. One is added and the other is naturally present in food items. The students keep eating other food items throughout the day, which increases their sugar intake," Maha Paediatrics Association president Dr Ramgopal Chejara told PTI. "Adding 25 grams and 45 grams of sugar in these meals could make the children diabetic and obese. Our teams have visited schools. We have appealed to the government to stop giving such sugary food items," he said. Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Ambadas Danve too criticised the state government over this GR. The state government thinks the future generation is a factory to digest excess sugar, he said in a post on X. The Union government is imposing restrictions on ethanol production, while at the same time excess sugar is being given to schoolchildren, said Danve, who is Leader of Opposition in the Legislative Council. Despite the challenges, over 90 per cent of parents encourage their children to ask more questions to support their growth and learning. Study reveals 54 per cent of parents often lack instant answers for kids' questions

A disturbing report by The Economic Times has revealed that over 100 <keyword id="21300086" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="cough-syrup" source="keywords">cough syrup</keyword> samples manufactured in India failed quality control tests. The Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (<keyword id="20109095" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="CDSCO" source="keywords">CDSCO</keyword>) analysed over 7,000 batches of cough syrup, finding that 353 did not meet quality standards. The reasons for these failures are particularly concerning. Nine batches contained di<keyword id="21957039" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ethylene-glycol" source="keywords">ethylene glycol</keyword> (DEG) or ethylene glycol (EG), toxins previously linked to the deaths of children in Gambia, Uzbekistan, and Cameroon. It is also a common industrial liquid used in many products, like antifreeze, car brakes, wallpaper removal solutions and in making fabrics and dyes. Similarly, EG is also a colourless and odourless alcoholic compound with a sweet-tasting and syrupy composition. It has known applications as an automotive antifreeze and as a raw material for manufacturing polyester fibres. It is also usually present in products like hydraulic brake fluids, stamp pad inks, ballpoint pens, solvents, paints, cosmetics and plastics. However, cough syrup manufacturers sometimes use EG and DEG as a replacement to non-toxic solvents like glycerine or propylene glycol simply because they are cheaper. Unfortunately, swallowing DEG and EG can be very dangerous. If someone drinks it, it can cause serious problems throughout their body and nervous system, leading to coma, seizures, nerve damage, and even liver and kidney failure, as per the CDC. <h2>Who is responsible?</h2>According to The Economic Times, the CDSCO blames unsecured supply chains and inadequate testing for the presence of these toxins. This news comes after a series of global alerts issued by the World Health Organization (WHO) in 2022 regarding cough syrups manufactured in India that were linked to the deaths of over 140 children worldwide. The first alert came in October 2022, when the WHO flagged four cough syrups produced by Haryana-based Maiden Pharmaceuticals. Authorities in Gambia linked these medications to 66 deaths, primarily from acute kidney failure. In December 2022, the WHO recommended avoiding two cough syrups made by Marion Biotech after Uzbekistan reported 18 child deaths linked to their Dok 1 Max syrup. Most recently, in August 2023, the WHO issued another alert for a batch of Indian common cold syrup found to contain unacceptable levels of DEG and EG as contaminants. This marked the fifth such alert issued by the WHO since 2022 regarding Indian-made cough syrups. <h2>CDSCO considers waiving testing requirement before exploring cough syrups</h2>The discovery of toxic components in something that’s as commonly sold as cough syrup should have prompted authorities to tighten texting processes. However, the apex drugs regulatory authority, is reportedly examining stakeholders’ proposal to waive the requirement for testing cough syrups being exported to the US, the UK, Canada, the European Union, Japan, Australia, Singapore, Korea and Switzerland at the prescribed laboratory. These repeated failures and global health warnings raise serious concerns about the safety of cough syrups manufactured in India. A health scare has gripped Gujarat after six children tragically succumbed to a suspected viral infection since July 10. While the cause is yet to be confirmed, State Health Minister <keyword id="20006003" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Rushikesh-Patel" source="keywords">Rushikesh Patel</keyword> has stated that <keyword id="22416433" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="Chandipura-virus" source="keywords">Chandipura virus</keyword> is a strong possibility. Twelve cases have been identified across the state, with four reported in Sabarkantha district, three in Aravalli, and one each in Mahisagar and Kheda districts. Notably, two patients from Rajasthan and one from Madhya Pradesh also received treatment in Gujarat. Samples from all 12 patients have been sent to the National Institute of Virology (NIV) in Pune for definitive diagnosis, said Minister Patel. Five of the six deaths occurred at the civil hospital in Himatnagar, Sabarkantha district. It was there that paediatricians first suspected <keyword id="22427587" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="chandipura" source="keywords">Chandipura</keyword> and sent samples from four deceased children for testing. Sadly, four more children at the hospital subsequently developed similar symptoms. The Chandipura virus, transmitted by mosquitoes, ticks, and sand flies, causes fever and symptoms similar to the flu. Interestingly, the virus is not considered contagious from person to person and has never been detected in any humans outside India. This mysterious virus was first detected in the blood of two patients from Maharashtra’s Chandipura village back in 1965. Since then, the virus has been linked to various unexplained outbreaks of encephalitis in the country. Recent ones include one in Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra in 2003, where 329 children were affected and 183 of them died. Similar cases were observed in children in Gujarat in the following year, in 2004. Given previous trends, the Chandipura virus seems to have a high mortality rate of over 50%. Accordingly, authorities are taking swift action to contain the situation. Intensive surveillance has been undertaken in the affected areas, Minister Patel stated. Over 18,600 people across 4,400 households have been screened for the virus and the Health Department is working tirelessly to prevent further spread of the disease. The state awaits confirmation from the NIV to guide further action. While earlier this problem was present in 13 to 15 per cent of children, it has increased to 20 to 25 per cent in the last 10 years. That means if there are 50 children in a classroom, then out of them there will be 15 to 20 children who require glasses. Dr <keyword id="20858465" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="rohit-saxena" source="keywords">Rohit Saxena</keyword>, professor of ophthalmology and pediatrics, <keyword id="20858467" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="rp-center" source="keywords">RP Center</keyword> at AIIMS, said that in earlier times, only 3 to 4 per cent of children required spectacles but now this number has increased. "Earlier, the problem of vision defects was seen in children 10 to 12 years of age. But now, at the age of 6 to 7 years, the eyesight of children has started deteriorating and they need to wear glasses," said the doctor. Not only this, but the doctor also said that even children under 4 years of age are facing the problem of myopia, or vision defect and the reason for its increase is the continuous use of gadgets like mobile phones, tablets, etc. in children. Children keep using mobile phones and other gadgets for many hours and parents do not interrupt them, Dr Rohit said, adding that before Corona, when parents used to come to us, they used to complain about television hours and ways to solve them. Dr Rohit said that in the data collected from rural areas in the last 10 years, earlier, 3 to 4 per cent of children had the problem of visual impairment, which has now increased to 7 to 8 per cent. The doctor said that it is very important to increase digitalization, which is a good thing. People are becoming aware of this, even in rural areas. Along with this, excessive use of mobile phones, tablets and other gadgets is harmful to children. According to a new study, being more active could be the key to unlocking a longer, healthier life — especially for those over 40. <h3 style="line-height:1.38;margin-top:14pt;margin-bottom:4pt;">5 extra years, just by moving more</h3>The study revealed that if everyone in the U.S. were as active as the top 25% of the population, individuals over 40 could add five years to their lives. Researchers discovered this by using accelerometers — devices that track movement with precision — rather than relying on self-reported activity levels. He also stressed the importance of creating environments that encourage movement: walkable neighbourhoods, affordable public transport, and spaces for cycling could benefit individuals and society alike by boosting health outcomes and reducing strain on healthcare systems. Medical boards such as the WHO and the ICMR advise adults to engage in at least 150 minutes of moderate aerobic activity or 75 minutes of vigorous activity per week, alongside muscle-strengthening exercises twice a week. Children and teens should aim for 60 minutes of daily physical activity, including muscle and bone-strengthening activities three times a week. Older adults are encouraged to follow similar guidelines with added focus on balance and flexibility exercises to prevent falls. The government promotes physical activity through initiatives like the <keyword id="20284979" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Fit-India-Movement" source="keywords">Fit India Movement</keyword>, though experts emphasise the need for better access to parks, sidewalks, and fitness programs to make exercise more achievable for all.
