But its valuation raised many eyebrows! Now that a month and a half has gone by since its listing, time is apt to examine if this gamble paid off. Will <keyword id="93460" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="hyundai-india" source="Orion">Hyundai India</keyword> justify its high valuation? Or does the listing highlight broader questions about the overheated valuation dynamics of Indian markets? A record-breaking <keyword id="19898327" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ipo" source="keywords">IPO</keyword> but questions remain Hyundai Motor India’s mega Initial Public Offering (IPO), launched in October 2024, broke records by raising ₹27,870 crore, making it India’s largest-ever IPO. The offer was oversubscribed by 2.37 times, highlighting robust demand. But many investors remained sceptical: was this IPO an honest attempt to expand Hyundai’s footprint in India or was it trying to offer a way to cashout for existing investors and promoters? Or perhaps, is it an attempt by the Korean chaebol — a large family-owned business conglomerate — to break free from the aforementioned “Korean Discount”? When shares listed on October 22, these concerns seemingly weighed on the minds of most investors and the stock promptly dipped 5% below the issue price on the day. Those on the right side of the trade will stand to gain even during <keyword id="6357558" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="Recession" source="Orion">recession</keyword>. </li><li>Economic turmoil is a great time because it provides an opportunity to stay focused on gaining wallet share.</li></ul>If there’s one word that has dominated all conversations around business this year, it has to be recession. Six months into the year, shares of leading <keyword id="6368235" type="General" weightage="60" keywordseo="it-services" source="Orion">IT services</keyword> companies came under selling pressure, as analysts started building in slower growth on the back of lower discretionary spends. Since June, most sell-side analysts have been monitoring not just quarterly growth and attrition but even headcount addition to justify their bearish stance on the sector. But this may be a simplistic way to analyse the sector, feels Nitin Rakesh, CEO and managing director of Mphasis. There’s no doubt that recession does impact growth and spending, but in the last five years, companies have embarked on a massive transformational journey, as their customers began demanding more from them. This is a journey that begins at the front end and then leads to the backend. So the nature of spending has pivoted from maintenance and infrastructure services to transformation that can enable clients to deliver better service to customers and go to market faster using data analytics. For those looking for evidence, you just need to look at the size of the industry – which is 50% bigger than it was in 2016. Says Rakesh, “The message back then was that digital will have a much larger role to play. From consumer to internal employees, everyone embraced all things digital. The first big trend we backed was that in the last five or seven years there was an alternative thanks to the proliferation of all things consumer, companies did not have time to consume tech in the same manner – which was in their premise, in their data centre and under their control – as they did earlier. This was capex intensive as you had to build the processing plant for all that data. Now you don’t need the power plant – data centre – in your office.” <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="‘We made the right bets’" comment="subhead2" text="‘We made the right bets’">‘We made the right bets’</cmsannotation> Analysts need to look out for companies that have a significant portion of their revenues coming from managed services and infrastructure. The legacy technology platforms that were put in place to automate the processes back in the 80s and 90s are obsolete and will, over time, fade out because companies are now moving to the cloud. But there’s a lot of legacy technology assets that are being managed that will move to the cloud. Computing on demand is a trend that has not fully played out and is definitely not mainstream, even though AWS launched its cloud services back in 2006. What has helped IT companies leverage on these new technologies is the size. It is a lot more difficult for companies with a large workforce and revenue base to pivot to the digital and transformation side of the business, which requires completely different capabilities and talent. Not surprising then that the smaller IT services companies have managed to grow faster than the Tier 1 companies. Rakesh says that his clients tell him that they no longer want to own or manage their data centres. He says: “The way companies look at budgets is very different as no more money will be spent on data centres and servers. Nobody wants to be in the business of owning real estate for data centres.” The looming recession will be an opportunity for the players that are focused on transformation, while those focused on legacy technology estates will see cost take-outs and revenue pressure. Mphasis, as a company, picked three themes a few years ago – consumer, software as a service and cost. It seems all these are still in fashion. The smaller tech companies (beyond the top four Tier 1 players) are of the view economic turmoil is nothing but an opportunity to stay focused on gaining wallet share. However, not all companies will have the same growth profile. There are players that will grow at plus 20% and then there are those that will see revenues contract by 20% in the global tech space and not just in Indian IT. This is because some of these players have continued to run data centres for customers – which is nothing but running the technology infrastructure of clients – and this is shrinking now. But if you are on the right side of the trade, says Rakesh, then there is a lot of money to be made. “We are fortunate because we made the right bets. The first mega trend that we have bet on is technology as a service. Second, all things consumer, which means cloud, data, cyber security and the ability to engage with consumers on experience. A lot of these areas that tech companies are focusing on are still nascent and, therefore, the pool of talent is still limited. What is also making matters more challenging is the tug of war that is playing out between employees and employers in India. Be it flexi working, compensation or moonlighting, the two sides are not able to come to an amicable agreement. Explains Rakesh, “The talent market has been muddied by the future of work or what the workforce of the future will look like. The equation has to play out. There is a tug of war playing out between employees and employers. The balance will be formed and it is not near equilibrium. The equation is warped.” Occupancy in IT campuses across India remains near 20% levels and companies would ideally like to take it to 40% but it is unlikely to happen in a hurry. While attrition is gradually coming off its peak seen in mid-2022, Rakesh believes that the devil is in the detail. While attrition is expected to remain elevated for skills that are in demand (like cloud architecture, cyber security and data analytics), wage hikes going forward could be nuanced. He explains, “Wage inflation is unlikely to go down in the near future because the talent is not available.” The one problem that the industry is contending with is that of creating a pipeline of talent and the costs involved in doing so. Even though boardroom discussions revolve around this vexing issue, companies realise that they no longer have the option of not investing, even if it means they lose some of the reskilled talent to competition. Says Rakesh, “We have to create a talent pipeline. We are running academies for niche skill areas.” Clearly, the journey of Indian IT services is not headed in any one direction. Companies focused on linear business models and legacy infrastructure services will take a hit in 2023, while the nimble ones that pivoted a few years ago will shine.

And it would have an effect on the revenues of the sector as a whole. “Our Q3FY23 estimates suggest a deceleration in mobile revenue growth across telcos due to SIM consolidation, lower benefit of premiumisation from slowdown in 4G net add, and absence of tariff hikes,” said an ICICI Securities report. Overall, analysts expect the three telcos to report earnings growth in the range of 9.4-19.7% year-on-year. Reliance Jio is expected to report the highest revenue growth at 19.7% YoY while its close rival Airtel is expected to report a 17.5% increase. Vodafone Idea, on the other hand, is expected to report revenue growth on the lower end at 9.4%, according to ICICI Securities. Pushing tariff hikes closer to 2024 elections raises the risk of political backlash,” IIFL Securities noted. This is also evident from the higher churn levels seen during Q2 FY23 across telcos,” said the Jefferies report. Additionally, the rollout of 5G and Jio offering unlimited high-speed data is also likely to change the competitive landscape of the sector. “Subscriber (sub) base for Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea is likely to shrink while Reliance Jio’s net sub additions (+5mn) may moderate,” said a report by ICICI Securities. The IT majors’ recently-posted fourth-quarter results and FY24 growth predictions tell their own story about the sector’s ongoing struggles. For FY23, IT major Infosys reported a growth of 15.4% in constant currency terms, lower than the guidance of 16-16.5% that it had given <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/business/corporates/news/infosys-results-q3-fy23-infosys-raises-revenue-guidance-for-fy23-to-16-16-5/articleshow/96941824.cms">at the end of Q3</a>. Besides, it guided for a 4-7% revenue growth in FY24. This is the first time since FY16 that Infosys has guided for single-digit revenue growth in constant currency terms. Bigger rival Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) reported a 11-quarter low constant currency revenue growth at $7.2 billion in Q4. TCS’ outgoing chief executive officer Rajesh Gopinathan said in a post-earnings conference that the company is seeing stress in one of its largest markets, North America. The recovery that the company had expected had not yet materialised. According to Sanjeev Hota, vice president, head of research at Sharekhan BNP Paribas, told Business Insider India, the macro uncertainty faced by the sector is unlikely to get better before 2-3 quarters. “(For) the entire calendar year, things look dicey and the industry may witness some kind of stability by the fag end of this year. US, North America, which are among the biggest markets for the sector, are not expected to improve in the near term." Banking crisis could impact June-quarter earnings The global growth slowdown has worked its way into the stock market performance of these companies with shares of the entire IT pack being beaten down significantly in 2023. The Nifty IT index is down 30% so far this year compared to a 3% fall in the broader Nifty50 index. The IT companies in India faced the heat after the banking crisis in the US and Europe erupted in March, triggered by the collapse of Silicon Valley Bank and Signature Bank in the US and the turmoil at Swiss lender Credit Suisse. IT majors like TCS, Infosys and Wipro have also neared their 52-week low since March considering IT companies’ exposure to US banks amid the banking sector crisis. BFSI clients are among the Indian IT companies’ largest clients. "Most of the price damage in the IT stocks has already been done. However, outperformance of the sector from the current level seems restricted till global macro headwinds stabilises. The sector valuation multiple is driven by earnings growth and if growth tapers off, there are little chances of the (IT) stocks outperforming the broader market indices,” added Hota. He, however, recommends staggered buying in TCS among the large caps and Persistent Systems from the mid-cap stocks, for long-term investors. The lower-than-expected growth in March quarter for sector leaders Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), Infosys and HCL Technologies have underlined the ongoing slowdown. And analysts see this spilling over to the next quarter as well. “The banking crisis in US regional banks and European banks in March 2023 has induced greater caution and could impact the June 2023 quarter. We would not be surprised by a weak US performance across companies that are likely to report in the coming days,” said a report by Kotak Institutional Equities. Analysts at JP Morgan have also highlighted the weakness in banking, financial services and insurance (BFSI) and telecom verticals, which would impact Tech Mahindra and Mphasis as they have high exposure to these verticals. India’s IT sector likely to face macro headwinds until end 2023, say analysts

Mumbai, Jan 16 () French brokerage BNP Paribas on Thursday said it expects a 9 per cent rise in the Indian equity benchmark Sensex amid concerns on the broader economy.
 It expects the 30-share BSE Sensex to be 44,500 points by the end of the year.
 Manishi Raychaudhuri, its Singapore-based head of Asia Pacific Equity, said he has not seen such a sharp correction in growth momentum like in the case of India, and termed the same as "scary".
 He said with the fall in private investments, this was bound to happen, adding that concerns are both cyclical and structural, and made it clear that there is no magic wand to correct things up.
 Making it clear that he holds "bearish" views on the economy, there are a few things which can cheer investors, and pointed out to careful stock selection as a key.
 Stating that the house is "overweight" on India, its head of India equity research Abhiram Eleswarapu said, "market is not about the conomy, but only about the top 50 companies."
 He, however, said that there are risks to its market expectations, including stagflation, the government's budget moves and if the US Federal does not cut interest rates twice.
 Raychaudhuri said the government should not look at the fiscal deficit number and cut down expenditure to achieve the target, warning that such a move can ensure that the current growth slowdown continues.
 In the upcoming budget, the government is most likely to take the middle path of not becoming too liberal on the fiscal deficit front, so as not to offend the rating agencies, and not be too tight either which will take care of growth concerns.
 He recommended that rather than concentrating on a fixed number, the government should ensure that the quality of deficit is such that there is enough of impetus to growth.
 There is also a divergence between rural and urban inflation, wherein price rise in rural areas is sagging while the same in cities is soaring, pointing out to a problem on terms of trade that needs to be rectified, he said.
 On the lack of transmission, he said political expediencies are unlikely to result in the government reducing small savings rate - one of the biggest detrimental factors.
 The RBI is also unlikely to cut rates in the next two quarters because of the high inflation print at 7.35 per cent. AA MR
