The Indian Air Force is ready for a two-front war, says Air Chief Marshal RKS Bhadauria

Pakistan used the threat of nuclear weapons as a "magic word" to deter India from punishing terrorists hiding across the border, but that changed after the surgical strikes and the Balakot air strikes, former India Army officers said on Thursday. The 2016 surgical strikes after the Uri attack on an Indian Army base, the Balakot air strike this year and a change in the "Indian psyche" together were instrumental in calling Pakistan's nuclear bluff, Lt Gen (retd) Amit Sharma and Maj Gen (retd) Dhruv C Katoch said. They made the remarks during the launch of the book, "The Bugle Calls: A Life in the Indian Army", written by Lt. Colonel (retd) Naresh Rastogi and former diplomat Kiran Doshi. "These surgical strikes, with full support from the political authority, represented a dramatic shift in our approach," said Maj Gen Katoch. "It was a different ball game altogether. The message was very clear: 'Do what you want', but we (India) won't be deterred by a nuclear threat," he said. He said India called Pakistan's bluff twice with surgical strikes and air strikes. Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan during his maiden speech at the 74th UN General Assembly devoted most of his time to India and Kashmir, drumming up hysteria over a possible nuclear war after New Delhi revoked the special status of Jammu and Kashmir in August. Calling Khan's nuclear war threat "immature" and "plain brinkmanship", Lt Gen Sharma said all this rhetoric was done to direct the international attention towards Kashmir. He said the "entire existence" of Pakistan's political and military leadership is about Kashmir. But with Article 370 gone, they really don't know what to do, he added. "Now, they are trying to get the world to do something to India by scaring the world with nuclear weapons. I feel this is brinkmanship, no country goes to nuclear war over these things," Lt Gen Sharma, who was the Commander-in-Chief of the Strategic Forces Command in 2014, said. Citing the book, he talked about an interaction between a Pakistani army officer and an Indian Army officer. The Pakistani officer told the Indian officer, "Indians are like batsmen, you have to stop us every time, and we are bowlers who have to get through only once". This, he said, was the Pakistani psyche for a long time and they have used the threat of using nuclear weapons as a "magic word" to stop India from doing acting against terrorists. But not anymore, he asserted. "This psyche changed after Balakot and Uri surgical strikes," he said. "From being batsmen, we are now googly bowlers. That is we have become offensive ... Today, we have a government which is offensive," he said. On the question of India's "No First Use' policy, Maj Gen Katoch brought the attention to the second line of the policy which, he said, is very categorical about "massive retaliation". "It (India) will not use nuclear weapons first, but if attacked, and that is where the actual philosophy comes in, there will be massive response, massive retaliation. I think that is the lesson people should not forget," he said. He said he feels Pakistan lacks the capacity to actually carry out the nuclear threat. "If they do so, the consequences to Pakistan would be severe and that country will no longer exist," he warned. India has called Pak's nuclear bluff twice: Ex-Army officers

<ul><li>A new study highlights that a nuclear war between India and Pakistan would result in the deaths of 125 million people. </li><li>The resulting pollution from the nuclear attacks would get trapped in the Earth’s atmosphere resulting in <keyword id="1711044" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="global-cooling">global cooling</keyword>. </li><li>The drop in temperatures could trigger mass starvation following a reduction in the ocean’s productivity and vegetation growth. </li></ul>The brewing tensions between India and Pakistan have to simmer down. Otherwise, the possible consequences could be disastrous. If a nuclear war were to break out between the countries, not only would it result in mass casualties but worldwide collateral damage, according to a new study published in <a href="https://advances.sciencemag.org/content/5/10/eaay5478">Science Advances</a>. "India and Pakistan are of special concern because of a long history of military clashes including serious recent ones, lack of progress in resolving territorial issues, densely populated urban areas, and ongoing rapid expansion of their respective nuclear arsenals," the environmental study stated. Scientists predict that India and Pakistan may have 400 to 500 nuclear weapons between themselves, by 2025. They would only have to use a fraction of those weapons to unleash destruction. Blocking out sunlight According to the study, if India uses 100 of its nuclear weapons to target urban centers in Pakistan. And, if Pakistan reciprocates by launching 150 of its own nuclear missiles, the death toll could reach 125 million. The resulting smoke from on-ground nuclear fires would get trapped in the lowest level of the atmosphere — the troposphere, which is 10 to 15 kilometers above the Earth’s surface — and spread around the globe in a matter of weeks. The density of the smoke would block out 20-35% of the incoming sunlight followed by global cooling of 2 degrees Celsius to 5 degrees Celsius. And, it could take the Earth more than 10 years to recover from the catastrophe. "Such a war would threaten not only the locations where bombs might be targeted but the entire world," said <a href="https://news.rutgers.edu/nuclear-war-between-india-and-pakistan-could-kill-millions-worldwide/20190924">Alan Robock</a>, the lead author of the study. The domino effect Global cooling is only one immediate after-effect of the nuclear war between India and Pakistan. It would also mean that precipitation would fall by an average of 15-30% worldwide with the regional impact being much greater. Because there will be less rain, vegetation growth will also decline by 15-30% and the ocean’s productivity would be affected by 5-15%, triggering mass starvation across the world. The researchers clarify that it’s unlikely that either country will actually unleash nuclear weapons but they could be used by accident — for instance, if either of their defence systems were hacked. "The only way to prevent this is to eliminate them (nuclear weapons)," stated Robock.

<ul><li>The India government might be looking into monitoring international long-distance calls amid rising tensions between India and Pakistan. </li><li>While no requests have been issues so far, the Telegraph Act, 1885 holds a provision for the government to monitor calls.</li><li>Government agencies can also ask telecom operators for surveillance equipment and arrangements to monitor several calls simultaneously.</li></ul> It’s possible that the Indian government is going to ask telecom operators to intercept calls between India and Pakistan. The companies are preparing themselves for requests to monitor international long-distance traffic on select routes after the Indian military put the northwestern states near the India-Pakistan border on high-alert. If any requests had been made, the information would be strictly confidential and only the designated nodal officer at each telecom company would know.

 But, telecom operators have the equipment to monitor calls and government has ordered internet shutdowns in the past. Ram Narain, the former Deputy Director General in the telecom department told the<a href="https://telecom.economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/telcos-bracing-to-intercept-calls-if-need-be/68194822"> Economic Times</a>, “The government can technically order temporary Internet shutdowns in surcharged situations to pre-empt rumour mongering and the wrong sort of messages spreading in sensitive zones in national security interest, and can even direct telcos to intercept/tap specific calls, based on intelligence inputs.” Can telecom operators or the government legally monitor your calls? The surveillance of any person or group — or even telecom network themselves — can be enabled by enacting the <a href="http://www.ijlt.in/pdffiles/Indian-Telegraph-Act-1885.pdf">Telegraph Act</a>, 1885.

 The definition of “telegraph” in the Telegraph Act brings virtually all communication devices under its umbrella — including smartphones and land lines. But, what actually gives the government the power to monitor calls is in the Section 5(2) of the Act, which states that the government can switch to surveillance “on the occurrence of any public emergency, or in the interest of public safety.” Essentially, the government can intercept calls, if necessary, in the interest of sovereignty and integrity of India, security of the state, friendly relations with foreign States, and public order. Additionally, under the Section 5(2), the government can ask telecom operators for surveillance equipment — but there is no obligation for the government to clearly outline the reasons. The definition of ‘surveillance equipment’ is also broad so the government has the power to install any surveillance equipment that matches up to the current state of technology and their requirements. The <a href="https://sflc.in/sites/default/files/wp-content/uploads/2014/09/SFLC-FINAL-SURVEILLANCE-REPORT.pdf">India Surveillance Report</a> asserts that telecom operators are required to make arrangements for the government to monitor several calls simultaneously. Government agencies have specified that the number of calls should be 480. They should all have ‘monitoring equipment’, and at least 30 calls should have tracing capabilities in each of the 10 designated security agencies. The specific ‘security agencies’ are not known to the public. The procedural law for tapping phones is under Rule 419A of the Indian Telegraph Rules, 1951. It also states that a lawful order may be issued only once all other reasonable means for acquiring the information have been ruled out.

We reiterate our call for Pakistan to abide by its United Nations Security Council commitments to deny terrorists safe haven and block their access to funds,” a State Department spokesperson said. Earlier on Wednesday, China said that it believes that Pakistan has “always been opposed” to terrorism and that both India and Pakistan should exercise restraint and avoid escalation of the situation, according to news agencies. However, on Thursday morning, a ceasefire violation was reported in the Poonch district along the Line of Control, ANI reported. India is also <a href="https://in.reuters.com/article/india-kashmir-border/india-builds-bunkers-to-protect-families-along-pakistan-border-idINKCN1QG20K?_ga=2.171069984.1477805050.1551274877-1064909316.1551274874">reportedly</a> building bunkers in the villages along the Line of Control - the de facto border with Pakistan -- to protect locals from fleeing in case of heavy shelling, Reuters reported. Meanwhile, the Indian government is faced with public pressure to bring back the pilot, Abhinandan Varthaman, who is in Pakistani custody after his jet crashed in an air battle on Wednesday. Pakistan has claimed it captured one Indian pilot who was later identified as Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman, who was flying a Mig-21, which was shot down after an aerial encounter between Pakistan and India, a first in 48 years. A video of the pilot circulating on social media, in which the captured pilot is being attacked by an angry Pakistani mob, prompted a strong objection from India. Foreign Minister Sushma Swaraj called it a "vulgar display" of injured personnel and a violation of the Geneva Convention and International Humanitarian Law. The convention calls for dignified treatment of military personnel during times of war and armed international conflict even when it is not a declared war. India’s Ministry of External Affairs also held meetings with a Pakistani envoy in Delhi and it is understood it handed over Pakistan a dossier containing details of Jaish-e-Mohammed's involvement in the February 14 Pulwama terror attack, which killed over 40 CRPF security personnel. Jaish had claimed responsibility for the attack, the deadliest in the valley in over three decades. Several international flights have been impacted after Pakistan closed its airspace and India shut down airports in the North West. As many as 16 international flights were cancelled as of Wednesday. Air Canada temporarily suspended its flights to India, and said a Vancouver-Delhi flight had to turn around mid-way. India has also tightened security in major cities -- the Delhi Metro has been put on red alert while Mumbai has also beefed up security. India’s commercial pilots have also come together offering to stand united as a ‘second line of defence’ after the Indian air force and support government efforts. India has termed Pakistan’s violation of Indian air space an act of aggression and accused it of targeting military installations, in stark contrast to India’s ‘non-military’ air strike in Pakistan the previous day that it says targeted a terror camp. Just hours after the air battle, Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan extended an olive branch in a televised address, asking for a dialogue and warning against the dangers of an escalated conflict, while saying Pakistan had to retaliate and its action was a display of its military capabilities. International pressure mounts on India and Pakistan to avert a full-blown war

Earlier, Pakistan <a href="https://in.reuters.com/article/india-kashmir/pakistan-shoots-down-indian-jets-carries-out-airstrikes-in-kashmir-idINKCN1QG0I1">claimed</a> it has shot down two Indian fighter jets and had captured one of the pilots. News agency reports citing sources identified the missing pilot as Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman. The use of air force <a href="https://indianexpress.com/article/explained/iaf-air-strike-mirage-awacs-sukhoi-popeye-jaish-training-camp-balakot-5602272/">was</a> the first since India fought Pakistan in 1971. The crash, which has <a href="https://in.reuters.com/article/india-kashmir/pakistan-shoots-down-indian-jets-carries-out-airstrikes-in-kashmir-idINKCN1QG0I1">reportedly</a> killed two Indian pilots and one civilian, took place in Budgam in Kashmir. The air strike came in the wake of a suicide bomber attack on February 14 in Pulwama, Kashmir that killed over 40 security personnel. India has so far emphasised it's air raid on Tuesday was ‘pre-emptive’ and ‘non-military’, signaling it didn't wish to escalate the conflict. India’s external affairs minister Sushma Swaraj <a href="https://indianexpress.com/article/india/balakot-strike-sushma-swaraj-india-pakistan-5602424/">told</a> diplomats from China and Russia that “India will continue to act with responsibility and restraint.” On Wednesday, in the wake of the violation of India’s air space, Pakistani foreign ministry also said it “had no intention of escalation” but was “fully prepared to do so if forced into that paradigm” Reuters reported. International flights between India and Pakistan were suspended and at least four airports have been shut in North India amid heightened tensions between the nuclear-armed neighbours. Airports in Srinagar, Jammu, Leh, Amritsar and Chandigarh have reportedly been closed for civilian operations following reports that two planes of the Pakistani air force had entered the Indian air space in Nowshera, Kashmir on Wednesday morning. Both US and China have asked the two countries to act with restraint. US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo <a href="https://indianexpress.com/article/india/us-secretary-of-state-urges-india-pak-to-de-escalate-tensions-prioritise-communication-5602472/">asked</a> India and Pakistan to exercise restraint and to prioritise communication. On Tuesday, China had also urged both countries to exercise restraint, and stressing for “cooperation” by the two countries in the interest of peace and stability in the South Asia region.

On February 26, 2019 around 3.30 a.m. 12 Mirage 2000 fighter jets crossed the Line of Control (<keyword id="6355098" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="loc" source="Orion">LoC</keyword>) and destroyed the Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) terror camp in Pakistan's Balakot. The Balakot airstrike demonstrated India's prowess to retaliate to Pakistan's sinister intentions. Codenamed as 'Operation Bandar', the airstrike was conducted by the seventh and ninth squadrons of the <keyword id="15141" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="indian-air-force" source="Orion">Indian Air Force</keyword>. After the strike, over two dozen fighter planes, including F-16s left Pakistani bases aiming to hit the Indian military installations. But the Indian Air force in anticipation of such an attack was ready and aerial dogfight ensued. It ended with Wing Commander Varthaman, shooting down an F-16 fighter plane of Pakistan and getting hit in the process. Varthaman exited safely but was captured. Pakistan's Prime Minister Imran Khan had announced the capture and India demanded his unconditional and safe return. Back then, the US played a role in the release of the officer, who safely returned to India. Jaipur, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday gave a stern message to the neighbouring countries, saying "no force in the world can stop our brave soldiers from protecting the country's border". "They give a fierce reply if anybody tries to judge their capabilities," said Modi. While noting some historical facts, the Prime Minister said, "The history of the world tells us that only those nations have remained safe, only those nations have moved forward, which had the ability to fight the invaders". The Prime Minister, however, did not take the name of any country, but his indication was almost clear towards China, whose <keyword id="367283" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="People-Liberation-Army">People Liberation Army</keyword> (<keyword id="43746" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="PLA">PLA</keyword>) recently indulged in a deadly clash with the Indian soldiers in the Ladakh region. "No force in the world can stop our brave soldiers from protecting the country's border," the Prime Minister said while addressing <keyword id="10273814" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="the-armed-forces-on-the">the Armed Forces on the</keyword> Rajasthan border on the occasion of Diwali. "No matter how far international cooperation has come, the equations may have changed, but we can never forget that vigilance is the way to safety, awareness is the support of happiness." Modi made it clear that India's current strategy believes in the policy of understanding and explaining. "Today, India's strategy is clear. Today's India believes in the policy of understanding and explaining, but if anybody tries to judge our capabilities, we equally give a fierce answer." The Prime Minister said the world is knowing this fact very well in the current scenario that India is not going to "compromise its interests even at any cost". "This status of India, this stature is due to your (Indian Army) power and your might. You have secured the country, that's why India today speaks vigorously on the global forums." The Prime Minister mentions that the whole world is troubled by the expansionist forces presently, saying "expansionism is, in a way, a mental disorder and reflects eighteenth-century thinking." He said, "India is also becoming a strong voice against this thinking". The Prime Minister said that India is proud of its Armed Forces, who protect our nation courageously. Modi said that 130 crore countrymen of India are standing firm with its Army today and saluting its valour. "Today every Indian is proud of the strength and bravery of his soldiers. They are proud of your invincibility." "Your austerity and the sacrifice at the border create trust in the country. Your determination strengthens the belief that any big challenge can be overcome together," the Prime Minister said. "Be it the highlands of the Himalayas, the expanse of the desert, the dense forest or the depth of the sea, your valour is always heavy on every challenge." The Prime Minister lauded the recent decision of the <keyword id="112134" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-Armed-Forces">Indian Armed Forces</keyword> for not importing more than 100 weapons and equipment from abroad, saying "this decision of the army has also inspired the countrymen to be vocal for the local". On the occasion, Modi also appealed to youth to build defence related equipment and materials for the Indian Army. "In recent times, many start-ups have come forward to cater to the needs of the forces. New startups of youth in the defence sector will take the country further in terms of self-reliance." Modi was addressing the forces at Longewala, the Thar desert of Rajasthan. He reached Rajasthan's Jaisalmer border to celebrate Diwali with the Forces in the morning, in continuation of his set tradition since he took over as the Prime Minister of India in 2014. Chief of Defence Staff Bipin Rawat, Army Chief M.M. Naravane and Border Security Force (BSF) Director General Rakesh Asthana accompanied the Prime Minister at the border during his visit to celebrate Diwali with the army men. Like every year, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is celebrating this Diwali also with the soldiers. He will distribute sweets and share their problems and listen to their views during his visit to Jaisalmer later in the day. About 100 BSF troops along with the army men are participating in the celebrations. Last year, the Prime Minister had visited Jammu and Kashmir's Rajouri district to celebrate Diwali with the men guarding the Line of Control (LoC). Modi was at the border positions of Uttarakhand to celebrate Diwali with the forces in 2018. He visited the Gurez sector of north Kashmir in 2017 and spent his Diwali with soldiers deployed there.

Anwar graduated from IIM Ahmedabad — one of the leading MBA institutes in India — said that he witnessed a cultural shift, moving from Kargil to Ahmedabad. He missed security forces on the roads. Anwar secured an on campus job in the metal and mining company Vedanta at an annual salary of ₹30 lakhs. He is currently handling the CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) activities of the group, to promote football learning centres in Rajasthan and Goa. This IIM alumni wants to coach students of war-hit Kargil crack CAT exam

One look at his long white beard and weak frame, and you could just dismiss <keyword id="3392875" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Kaur-Singh">Kaur Singh</keyword> as just another small-time farmer from Punjab. However, this farmer, from Malwa, is the only Indian boxer who has competed against boxing legend <keyword id="84333" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Muhammad-Ali">Muhammad Ali</keyword>. 
 
How's that? 
 
The Arjuna awardee Olympian boxed against Ali an exhibition bout in 1980, but has been forgotten now, even as the Rio Olympics are about to begin, and the players could definitely benefit from some motivation. 
 
Kaur Singh, who got the Arjuna Award in 1982 and the Padmashri in 1983, has also recieved the Vishisht Sewa Medal (VSM) in 1988 from the Indian Army. When he was at the peak of his career, he had won the gold medal in the men's heavyweight category for India, in the 1982 Asian Games held inNew Delhi. 
 
However, somewhere along this stupendous journey, he lost his faith in sports, also disallowing his children from taking up sports as a career, maybe because he wanted them to have a safe future, unlike his own. 
 
It was after participating in the Los Angeles Olympics in 1984 that ​he hung up his boxing gloves, and now lives in his native village Khanal Khurd in Sangrur, as a farmer tending to his four-acre farm. It's been 34 years that he won the gold medal in the New Delhi Asiad and was promised a cash reward of Rs 1 lakh, but Singh is yet to get the money from the Punjab government. 
 
"This is the biggest drawback behind our failure to get the right talent in sports," he told TNN." "The government needs to stand by sportspersons in their thick and thin," he said. 
 
After he retired from the Army, he returned to his village, where he now eanrs a modest living by farming. Even when he developed a heart condition that needed a stent to be installed in his body, the state government didn't come forward to help the former superstar of Indian boxing. It was the Army that paid the fee for his treatment. "No government ever gave me recognition in the last three decades," he says. 
 It's not only boxing that Singh made his name in. He was given a <keyword id="401558" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Sena-Medal">Sena medal</keyword> for his exemplary bravery in the India-Pakistan war in the Barmer sector in Rajasthan. 
 
In his short career, he won six gold medals in the international competitions, including the Asian Games of 1982. 
 
However, he was not always interested in boxing. In fact, it was only after he had joined the army that he came to know of boxing as a sport, taking it up professionally in 1977, competing in the senior national boxing championship held in 1979. He won a gold medal there, in the heavyweight category.
