Unrelenting rain forced the abandonment of the first-day's play of the two-day practice match between India and Prime Minister's XI here on Saturday, robbing Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill of some much-needed Pink ball game time ahead of the day-night second Test against Australia at Adelaide. The teams have agreed to play a 50-over-a-side match on Sunday at the Manuka Oval, weather permitting. However, the day might have come as a dampener for captain Rohit, who had skipped the first Test at Perth to welcome a baby boy into his family, ahead of the Pink Ball Test, starting from December 6. Though he has had couple of extensive net sessions with Pink ball, facing some quality bowlers in a real-match situation holds a different value, considering India's last day-night Test was against Sri Lanka in March 2022 in Bengaluru. Emissions from residential cooking and heating, power generation, and industries together contribute up to 60 per cent of India's PM2.5 pollution, with about 80 per cent of this coming from <keyword id="23824528" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="fossil-fuel-combustion" source="keywords">fossil fuel combustion</keyword>, a new study has found. The peer-reviewed study, published in MDPI's "Air" journal, suggests dividing India into 15 airsheds based on regional climate and pollution sources. An airshed is a geographic area where <keyword id="53848" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="air-quality" source="Orion">air quality</keyword> is influenced by common factors such as wind patterns and pollution sources. Since pollution can spread across regions, the <keyword id="22077484" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="airshed-approach" source="keywords">airshed approach</keyword> promotes coordinated action among states. "Residential cooking and heating, power generation, and all other industries together are responsible for 40-60 per cent of the PM2.5 pollution in all the airsheds, and approximately 80 per cent of the pollution comes from fossil fuel burning sources," said Sarath Guttikunda, lead author of the study and founder of UrbanEmissions.info. The study said biomass burning, including post-harvest crop residue burning, contributed less than 3 per cent to annual PM2.5 levels while transport accounted for 5-10 per cent in all airsheds. PM2.5 are fine particles with a diameter of 2.5 micrometres or less, about the width of a human hair. These are so small that these can penetrate deep into the lungs and even enter the bloodstream, posing significant health risks. An analysis of PM2.5 trends from 1998 to 2020, along with state-level data on fuel consumption, energy demand and emissions, revealed that 11 of the 15 airsheds were critical for India's air quality management and required coordinated interventions. The Indo-Gangetic Plains remain the most polluted region, with significant emissions from residential cooking and heating (especially in winter), power plants, brick kilns (driven by construction demand), waste burning, dust and vehicular movement for passengers and freight. The plateau region between the Eastern and Western Ghats, India's second most populated area, has seen the highest rise in annual PM2.5 pollution during this period, the study said. "This is an indication of the growing urbanisation and demand for transport, industrial, and commercial amenities," it said. Coastal areas, vital to India's industrial economy, have also experienced rising pollution despite the moderating effects of land-sea breezes. This increase is attributed to growing shipping emissions and overall industrial growth in cities such as Mundra, Surat, Mumbai, Goa, Mangalore, Kochi, Thiruvananthapuram, Chennai, Visakhapatnam, Paradip and Haldia.

The PM E-DRIVE scheme will be implemented from tomorrow, October 1, 2024, and will be in force till March 31, 2026. The total outlay of ₹10,900 crore is spread over two years, with ₹5,047 crore allocated for FY 2024-25 and ₹5,853 crore for FY 2025-26. The scheme is aimed at accelerating the adoption of EVs in the country, with a focus on electric two-wheelers, electric three-wheelers (e-3Ws) and more. The government introduced the FAME-II scheme in 2019 with a budget of ₹10,000 crore, which was later enhanced to ₹11,500 crore to extend its support for electric vehicles until March 2024. The PM E-DRIVE subsumes the ongoing EMPS-2024 scheme. A major focus of the scheme is providing demand incentives to lower the acquisition cost of EVs for consumers. For FY 2024-25, the scheme proposes a demand incentive of ₹5,000 per kWh for e-2Ws and e-3Ws, which will be reduced to ₹2,500 per kWh in FY 2025-26. A major part of the outlay, around ₹8,070 crore has been earmarked for EVs. This includes ₹4,391 crore for electric buses and ₹1,772 crore for electric two-wheelers. As part of the scheme, the central government aims to support the purchase of over 14,000 e-buses, establish 2,000 charging stations, and upgrade EV testing facilities across the country. Modi also talked about India's BIO E3 (biotechnology for environment, economy and employment) policy to develop the country into a biotech powerhouse and on the topic of AI, noted that India's policy is to promote AI for all, underpinned by its ethical and responsible use. They also expressed strong interest in investing and collaborating with India, agreeing that investing in startups would be a synergistic opportunity to innovate and develop newer technologies in the country. It also said that the home and household market are witnessing strong demand, particularly in tier 2 and tier 3 cities that are emerging as growth hubs. It also said that omnichannel retail and e-commerce are helping businesses connect with consumers, expanding their reach beyond urban centres. Stating that factors such as high disposable incomes, the rise of digital platforms, easy access to credit, and young consumers seeking modern designs, home renovations and personalisation, which provide tailored offerings to consumers, are driving the demand. While the home and household industry are expanding rapidly, there are still limitations to overcome. After-sales support, warranty worries and the need for a comprehensive omnichannel strategy are all significant issues for businesses to handle. Per the report, India's home and household market is witnessing a remarkable evolution, where consumers are gravitating towards premium and branded products, and businesses are increasingly adopting a consumer-first approach. There is a deeper focus on <keyword id="20770439" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="consumer-experiences" source="keywords">consumer experiences</keyword> and design-led product innovation," said Anand Ramanathan, Partner for consumer products and retail sector leader at Deloitte India. Social media and advanced technologies enable companies to precisely target and engage their audiences, making the market more dynamic and responsive to changing needs, according to him. According to the report, sustainability is becoming a central concern for Indian consumers, with rising demand for energy-efficient appliances and eco-friendly kitchenware and amid this manufacturers are increasingly investing in water-saving bathroom fittings, sustainable kitchen solutions and energy-efficient technologies to cater to eco-conscious consumers. This trend, coupled with government policies such as the PLI scheme, Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana, SMC, UJALA and <keyword id="20809694" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="pm-mitra" source="keywords">PM Mitra</keyword>, is driving demand and attracting investments in the home and household sector, it said.
