Visiting <keyword id="78682" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-army-chief">Indian Army Chief</keyword> <keyword id="8457212" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="general-Manoj-Mukund-Naravane">General Manoj Mukund Naravane</keyword> on Thursday held a meeting with his Nepali counterpart General Purna Chandra Thapa during which they discussed ways to enhance bilateral defence cooperation. In a solemn ceremony earlier in the day, General Naravane laid a wreath on the 'Veer Smarak' at the Army Pavilion in Tundikhel, Kathmandu, following which he visited the Nepali Army Headquarters and was accorded with a ceremonial Guard of Honour. At the headquarters, he held the meeting with General Thapa, during which the Indian Army chief was also given a comprehensive briefing by senior officers of the Nepali Army. Also on Thursday, Naravane handed over various medical equipment to the Nepal Army, which included X-Ray machines, computed radiography systems, ICU ventilators, video endoscopy units, anesthesia machines, laboratory equipment and ambulances. Additional ventilators were also gifted to assist the Nepali Army in its fight against the coronavirus pandemic. This follows an earlier army-to-army provision of ventilators in July this year. Later in the day, Naravane will receive the honorary rank of general of Nepal Army on Thursday, which will be conferred to him by President Bidhya Devi Bhandari during a function in the President's Office, according to the Nepal Army. Nepal and India have a historic tradition of conferring the honorary title to each other's army chief since 1950. He will be the 18th Indian Army Chief to be conferred with the title. General Naravane is also scheduled to hold talks with the President later. The Indian Army chief landed in Kathmandu on Wednesday for a three-day official visit to Nepal, on the invitation of General Thapa. He was received at the airport by Lieutenant General Prabhu Ram Sharma, CGS Nepali Army and officials of the Indian Embassy. The ties between the two countries came under strain recently after China increased its influence on Nepal. It was India's road construction to the Lipulekh area at 17,000 feet that sparked a diplomatic row between India and Nepal as Kathmandu claimed the area to be its territory. The road was constructed to shorten the travel time for pilgrims visiting the Kailash Mansarovar. Lipulekh is a tri-junction between India, Nepal and China situated atop the Kalapani Valley in Uttarakhand. After this, Nepal brought out a new political map showing the contested area as its own. India has rejected this new map of Nepal saying it is not based on historical facts or evidence. Indian and Nepal discuss enhancing bilateral defence cooperation during Indian Army Chief Naravane's three-day visit

Senior diplomats of India and Nepal on Monday held a virtual meeting to review the progress made on various India-aided developmental projects being implemented in the Himalayan nation. The meeting came days after Nepal Prime Minister K P Sharma Oli telephoned his Indian counterpart <keyword id="6354477" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Narendra-Modi">Narendra Modi</keyword> to greet him on India's 74th Independence Day, in the first high-level contact after bilateral ties came under severe strain following issuance of a new political map by Nepal in May. Nepalese Foreign Secretary <keyword id="2609598" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Shanker-Das-Bairagi">Shanker Das Bairagi</keyword> and Indian Ambassador to Nepal Vinay Mohan Kwatra are leading the delegations representing their respective countries during the oversight mechanism meeting, according to Nepal Foreign Ministry sources here. The meeting, being held virtually due to the coronavirus outbreak, will assess the progress made on various India aided development projects being implemented in Nepal, the sources said. India said Nepal's action violates an understanding reached between the two countries to resolve the boundary issues through talks. Nepal and India meet to discuss development projects amid border tensions

Army chief Gen MM Naravane will arrive in Nepal on Wednesday on a three-day crucial visit, which Indian officials here say will deepen the long-standing bonds of friendship between the two armies and provide an opportunity for both sides to explore avenues to further strengthen bilateral defence partnership for mutual benefit. Naravane's visit is largely aimed at resetting relations with the Himalayan nation after the ties came under severe strain following a bitter border row. Gen Naravane is visiting Nepal at the official invitation of Nepal Army chief Gen Purnachandra Thapa. Indian Embassy spokesperson Naveen Kumar said that Gen Naravane's visit "will deepen the long-standing and customary bonds of friendship between the two armies." "His visit will provide an opportunity for both sides to discuss the bilateral defence partnership and explore avenues to further strengthen it for mutual benefit." Gen Naravane will pay homage at the martyrs' memorial at the Army Pavilion on Thursday morning and receive a guard of honour at the Nepal Army headquarters, according to Nepal Army sources. He will hold formal talks with his Nepalese counterpart at the Nepal Army headquarters on Thursday. Mutual interests between the two armies and bilateral relations will mainly feature during the talk, Nepal Army sources said. The <keyword id="78682" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-army-chief">Indian Army chief</keyword> will also gift an ambulance and medical equipment for a mobile field hospital to be operated by the Nepal Army. He will also hold interaction with senior officials at the Nepal Army headquarters. Indian Army Chief Gen MM Naravane to begin three day Nepal visit today amid border tensions with China

The international arm of the National Payments Corporation of India (<keyword id="193629" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="npci" source="Orion">NPCI</keyword>) on Thursday announced to deploy <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/business/telecom/news/how-to-use-upi-autopay-to-recharge-jio-number/articleshow/88754552.cms" data-type="tilCustomLink">Unified Payments Interface</a> (UPI) in Nepal to bolster interoperable real-time person-to-person (P2P), person to merchant (P2M) and potential cross-border P2P remittances between Nepal and India. Nepal is the first country outside India to adopt UPI as the payments platform, driving the digitalisation of cash transactions. The NPCI International Payments Limited (NIPL), the global arm of the NPCI joined hands with the Gateway Payments Service Pvt Ltd, an authorised Payment System Operators in Nepal, and Manam Infotech Private Limited to deploy UPI in the country. "The partnership will enable consumers within Nepal to transact swiftly using state-of-the-art UPI platform and deliver a seamless user experience. We are confident that this initiative will stand as a testimony to NIPL's technological capabilities and vision of scaling our unique offerings globally," said Ritesh Shukla, CEO of NIPL. It will also enable the way forward for real-time cross-border P2P remittances between Nepal and India. In 2021, UPI enabled 39 billion financial transactions amounting to commerce worth $940 billion, which is equivalent to approximately 31 per cent of India's GDP. "The same UPI service has created a significant positive impact in India in terms of the country's digital payment transformation. We expect UPI in Nepal would play a pivotal role in transforming the digital economy of the country and dreams of building a less-cash society," said Rajesh Prasad Manandhar, CEO of GPS. Mobile penetration of over 135 per cent, with 65 per cent of the population using smartphones, provides a bedrock for seamless replication of the digital revolution in India to be replicated in Nepal. Over the next few months, all three companies will work closely together to deploy UPI in Nepal. along with all the functionalities and features presently available in India. "We believe this partnership will eliminate all the barriers of payment transformation within Nepal and across the border thereby transforming the regional economy," said Naga Babu Ramineni, Director of Manam.

NPCI to deploy UPI in Nepal, first country outside India

Amid border tension at eastern Ladakh, <keyword id="9949871" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="chinese-construction-activities">Chinese construction activities</keyword> were observed near the border at Uttarakhand. "Hut-like structures on the Chinese side, very close to Tinkar-Lipu pass of Nepal, were observed," sources said on Wednesday. "It was also found that China is engaged in construction activities in Chinese side of the General Area of Jojo village, Champa Maidan. The Jojo village is approximately seven to eight kilometres from Tinkar-Lipu pass of Nepal," said sources. Indian security agencies are now keeping close watch on movements of Chinese People's Liberation Army troops near Uttarakhand borders touching Nepal. With escalation in India and China border tension, Indian intelligence had flagged earlier that the Nepal government has directed its forces to "closely monitor" the activities of <keyword id="6354416" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-Army">Indian Army</keyword> at Lipulekh area. Lipulekh is a tri-junction between India, Nepal and China situated atop the Kalapani Valley in Uttarakhand. Nepal government's Ministry of Home Affairs issued directions to Nepalese Armed Police Force (NAPF) to closely monitor Indian Army activities in the general area of Lipulekh. Further at Lipulekh, 44 battalion of the NAPF have been deployed. It was also found that China has increased its troop deployment at Lipulekh. China has deployed 150 Light Combined Arms Brigade. The brigade was moved in August from towards the Lipulekh tri-junction. They have reinforced troops in Pala, around 10 km from the border. Chinese 'hut-like' structures spotted near Uttarakhand border

If all goes well, you can soon board a train to China. China has proposed a trilateral economic corridor with India, in the name of rebuilding earthquake hit Nepal. This railway shall pass through Nepal and Tibet. <o:p></o:p>

	Huang Xilian, Deputy Director General of the Asian Affairs Department of the Chinese Foreign Ministry has told the PTI, the India-Nepal-China Corridor is a major initiative to promote the connectivity in the region especially between China and India and help quake-ravaged Nepal.<o:p></o:p>

	Huang told Indian correspondents that the proposal has been mooted by China during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit here in May.<o:p></o:p>

	The proposal was discussed in the recent meeting between External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj and his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi on the sidelines of an international conference on Nepal reconstruction in Kathmandu last month.<o:p></o:p>

	"The two Ministers had further discussion on this topic and reached consensus. We need to work together for the process of reconstruction of Nepal and we need to setup a joint study group to explore the feasibility of the Corridor," Huang, the Foreign Ministry's point man for India told the PTI correspondent. <o:p></o:p>

	"We are ready to set up study group for economic corridor. If we can reach an agreement on feasibility we are ready to push forward it as it will bring benefit to the three countries," he said.<o:p></o:p>

	He also spoke about China's interest to build railway line through the Himalayan passes of Tibet connecting Nepal and India. "The construction of this railway will help to materialise a dream. We need to have a feasibility study on it. We need to have consultations among the three. If India shows some interest we can respond positively," he said.<o:p></o:p>

	China also dropped the much publicised plan to construct a high speed rail link through Mt. Everest, which Huang dismissed as imagination of a retired railway official.<o:p></o:p>

	Asked about the media reports about plans to build 540-km long high speed railway cutting through Mt Everest, Huang said an official who quoted in this regard is full of imagination.<o:p></o:p>

	In April this year, Wang Mengshu, a rail expert at the Chinese Academy of Engineering, spoke about this proposal to state-run China Daily.<o:p></o:p>

	Huang said China is in discussions with India about the projects for reconstruction of Nepal to rebuild it after the devastating quake which flattened many parts of the country.

These two currency notes were issued by the <keyword id="6354335" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="reserve-bank-of-india">Reserve Bank of India</keyword> recently after old Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 denomination notes were withdrawn. <keyword id="12266" type="COUNTRY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Nepal">Nepal</keyword> Rastra Bank (NRB) has called the new currency notes “unauthorised and illegal”. 
 NRB spokesperson Narayan Poudel said these new currency notes are not yet legal in Nepal, according to Onlinekhabar.com. Poudel said these notes will be legal in Nepal only when India issues a FEMA notification as per the <keyword id="6368276" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Foreign-exchange">Foreign Exchange</keyword> Management Act. India is likely to issue a FEMA notification, allowing people in Nepal and India to possess certain amount of Indian currency. Earlier, a ban was in effect in Nepal till last year against the use of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 denominations notes. Authorities had lifted this ban after the visit of Prime Minister <keyword id="6354477" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Narendra-Modi">Narendra Modi</keyword> to Nepal. Nepal last year allowed people to carry Indian Rupees of higher denominations upto Indian Rs 25,000. 
The Reserve Bank of India had formed a task force to ease currency exchange facility in Nepal for non-Indians who possess the now-defunct notes of 500 and 1,000 denominations.

However, the countries’ burgeoning relationship might have just hit a snag. A state-owned Chinese power company, China Three Gorges International (CTGI), has pulled out of the West Seti hydropower project after explaining to the Nepalese government that the project isn’t feasible. The $1.2 billion undertaking would have resulted in the completion of Nepal’s first reservoir project by 2019, but without construction not even having begun yet, the project will likely be shelved indefinitely. The two sides have been sparring over the terms of the project for some time now. The Nepalese government had offered to reduce the capacity of the project by 20% to 600 MW and extend the <keyword id="511035" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="power-purchase-agreement">power purchase agreement</keyword> from 10 years to 12 years, but CTGI still felt that high displacement and transmission expenses would compromise the cost-effectiveness of the project. A possible rift The pullout of CTGI from the project will have a definite impact on the credibility of Chinese firms in Nepal, and could set a troubling precedent for similar projects. Additionally, Nepal is also wary of finding itself in a Chinese debt trap, as experienced by other South Asian countries like Pakistan and Sri Lanka. All things considered, it could be a ripe moment for India to step in. India already has a number of vested interests in Nepal’s hydropower sector, a sector that it has traditionally been monopolised. Earlier this year, in May, India’s state-backed Satluj Jal Vidyut Nigam (SJVN) commenced construction on one of Nepal’s largest hydroelectricity projects. The <a href="https://in.reuters.com/article/nepal-india-modi/india-and-nepal-pms-launch-construction-of-900-mw-power-plant-idINKBN1IC0P6">900 MW Arun-3 project </a>represented a mending of ties between India and Nepal following an economic blockade at their border in 2015 and 2016. Regardless of the outcome of the West Seti project, India should see CTGI’s exit as a way to improve its own clout in Nepal. Nepal’s Prime Minister, KP Oli, had been relying on Chinese investment to reduce the country’s dependence on India, however the latest development could see things pivoting back to the latter.

Nepal is recording 57 times as many cases as a month ago, the <keyword id="6356001" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="international">International</keyword> Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies said in a <a href="https://media.ifrc.org/ifrc/press-release/south-asia-urgent-action-needed-to-prevent-further-human-catastrophe/">press release.</a><a href="https://www.reuters.com/world/asia-pacific/human-catastrophe-indias-covid-19-surge-spreads-nepal-2021-05-05/"></a>"What is happening in India right now is a horrifying preview of Nepal's future if we cannot contain this latest COVID surge that is claiming more lives by the minute," Netra Prasad Timsina, chair of the Nepal Red Cross, said in the statement. The spikes can be seen across the region, not just in countries bordering India. The impact of the wave in India can be felt as far away as Indonesia, where there have been two confirmed cases of the highly infectious variant B.1.617, <a href="https://www.reuters.com/world/asia-pacific/indonesia-says-finds-two-cases-indian-covid-19-variant-jakarta-2021-05-03/">Reuters</a> reported. Indonesia has also been seeing a surge of new cases, with an average of about 5,000 daily COVID-19 cases in the past week, CNN reported. Sri Lanka's daily cases on Friday were almost five times what they were in early April with <a href="https://hpb.health.gov.lk/covid19-dashboard/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> 1,895 reported.</a> The Maldives, which has seen a large number of Indian tourists, has also recently experienced a rise in cases, CNN reported. While Thailand was able to contain an outbreak in 2020, cases have been on the rise since the end of last year and on Friday 1,911 new cases were reported. "We need to act now and we need to act fast to have any hope of containing this human catastrophe," Alexander Matheou, the IFRC's Asia-Pacific regional director said in the statement. "This virus has no respect for borders and these variants are running rampant across Asia."

COVID-19 cases and deaths are skyrocketing in several Southeast Asian countries, not just India

Even as Nepal tries to gather enough people and rescue teams to injured and death, another set of aftershock were felt across Nepal and India with it measuring 6.9 on the Richter scale—making it the biggest after the main <keyword id="6362774" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="earthquake">earthquake</keyword> that struck Nepal yesterday morning. 
 
Even as the death toll surpasses the 2,000 mark, massive rescue efforts have been mounted by the Nepalese government ably supported by rescue teams from India. More than 10 air force aircrafts and 210 NDRF teams have been sent to Nepal by India with almost 50 tonnes of relief material. So far, almost 300 Indians have been rescued from Nepal and brought back to India this morning, and efforts are on to bring another 500 Indians stranded in Nepal. 
 
Reports also suggest 61 people have been injured and 18 dead at the Everest base camp; Indian air force team is already overseeing rescue efforts in that area.

Death toll rising rapidly, aftershock continues to jolt

<keyword id="18568" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="kathmandu">Kathmandu</keyword>, Ahead of signing a major Covid <keyword id="24209" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="vaccine">vaccine</keyword> deal with <keyword id="3658" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="India">India</keyword>, probably on Friday, Nepal's Department of Drug Administration (DDA) has given permission for the <keyword id="9156702" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="emergency-use">emergency use</keyword> of India-made coronavirus vaccine Covishield in the country. Nepal's Foreign Minister Pradeep Gyawali is currently in New Delhi to take part in the sixth meeting of Nepal-India Joint Commission. One of the major agreements that both sides are likely to ink is on cooperation in Covid vaccine manufactured in India. The vaccine, developed by the <keyword id="30725" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Oxford-university">Oxford University</keyword> and Astra-Zeneca and produced by the <keyword id="95879" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Serum-Institute-of-India">Serum Institute of India</keyword>, has been given conditional permission for emergency use, the department said. The DDA had two days ago called for the registration of vaccines to be used for emergency use. This is the first time that any Covid-19 vaccine has been approved for use in Nepal. Other manufacturing countries like China and Russia were also interested in providing vaccines to Nepal but due to climatic conditions, pricing, logistic facility and ease of import, Nepal preferred the Indian Covid vaccine. India has already permitted the use of Covishield as well as Covaxin of <keyword id="149108" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bharat-Biotech">Bharat Biotech</keyword>. A massive rescue effort has been planned by the <keyword id="44734" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Indian-Government">Indian Government</keyword> and is on its way to <keyword id="12266" type="COUNTRY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Nepal">Nepal</keyword>. In a press conference a short while ago, the <keyword id="107430" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="National-Disaster-Management-Authority">National Disaster Management Authority</keyword> said that all possible relief measures are being provided not only to Nepal, but also the affected areas within India, which includes UP, <keyword id="30033" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Bihar">Bihar</keyword> and <keyword id="6357783" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="West-Bengal">West Bengal</keyword>. The death toll has been rising rapidly and Nepal has requested for all possible help from India, it’s closest neighbour. 
 The <keyword id="119446" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="National-Disaster-Response-Force">National Disaster Response Force</keyword> is sending a total of 10 teams to the affected areas in Nepal. Each team consisting of 45 trained personnel will be carrying along with them a cache of relief equipment including cutting and breathing equipment, airlifting bags, stretchers, medicines, satellite phones, other communication devices such as VHF and HF as well as paramedics and doctors. 6 of these teams will be airlifting from Ghaziabad near the National Capital Region, where as the remaining four will leave from Bhatinda today. The NDRF isn’t ruling out sending more teams if required. 
 
In addition, 2 C17 Globemasters have been dispatched to provide further help in the rescue operations in devastated Nepal. 10 Air Force planes have also been sent to Nepal to oversee and help with the rescue operations. M 17 choppers that were sent to Nepal, have however, had to return to India, given they were unable to land because of the bad weather. 
 4 NDRF teams have also been dispatched to Bihar, where the death toll o the Indian side has been the highest, with as many as 22 deaths reported. A total of 34 people have reportedly died so far in India because of the <keyword id="6362774" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="earthquake">earthquake</keyword>, from Bihar, West Bengal and UP.
